  • St. Charles North starts new winning streak

A 10-game winning streak for St. Charles North’s softball team came to an end last Thursday in a 10-9 loss to Neuqua Valley.

So how did the North Stars respond? By starting a new streak in decisive fashion with a 17-1 win over Elgin Monday in St. Charles.

In the five-inning victory the North Stars (11-2 overall, 4-1 in the Upstate Eight Conference) pounded out 16 hits, drew five walks and had one hit batter. All but one player reached base successfully.

Amanda Ciran picked up the win in the circle for North. After yielding two baserunners in the first inning, she let just three batters reach in the next four innings.

Taylor Russell continued her hot streak, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Annie Korth was 3-for-3 with a walk, three doubles, three runs and three RBIs. Ashley Seering went 2-for-2 (walk, hit by pitch), scored three times and drove in two. Ciran helped her own cause with a two-run homer to cap a five-run first for the Stars.

  • Brookfield village planner job still unfilled

Calling the move “shortsighted,” one Brookfield village trustee had some barbs to throw following the decision not to refill the void left by a former village planner — a void created amid harsh criticisms of officials, residents and the media.

Brookfield Village Manager Rick Ginex said the village planner position, left vacant by Meena Beyers as of April 15, will not yet be filled due to the economy.

“I’ve already told the board that I want to wait on filling that position for five to six months at least,” Ginex said. “I want to see where we’re at financially, and I really have some concerns with the state of Illinois.”

The state could be reducing the municipal share of the state income tax by 3 percent, which would mean that Brookfield could stand to lose $440,000.

“If they take that away, we’re going to be in a world of hurt,” Ginex said. “I’m not too confident in what the state does nowadays. Sometimes the budget is not done by June 30 like it is supposed to be. I think five or six months is a good benchmark.”

At the Village Board meeting April 12, Trustee Michael Towner read a statement saying that he felt the village planner position needed to be filled.

“Brookfield took two steps back by not having this position filled,” Towner said. “Our staff and their abilities are the foundation from which we build on. It is not always visible to the public until a sign goes up or a brick is laid. To say the position is not needed is just shortsighted. We need to be ready as the economy is improving and need this position to help us to lead for a better Brookfield.”

In a resignation letter, Beyers accused certain village staff members of “having no boundaries or respect for privacy.”

Beyers criticized officials and residents for their disrespect.

“In my career, I have never served such a disdainful and disrespectful community as I experienced during my time serving the Village of Brookfield,” Beyers said. “During my last year, it became increasingly clear that current and former elected officials, residents and press are more interested in continuing the counterproductive politics of the past than moving the community forward.”

Beyers also said village residents did not value what was best for the community.

“I now understand that Brookfield residents may never value what is best for the community, as the longevity of long-range planning in their minds ends with the next election or village negotiation.”

Beyers said the only thing making her position “endurable” was the camaraderie of the staff and competency of the Brookfield Plan Commission. Beyers’ salary was $70,571, and her insurance costs were $16,940.

Ginex said Beyers’ resignation would cause more work for the current employees.

“Meena did a significant amount of work on the (TIF district) car wash, so I’m not going to say not having her here is not going to affect any planning issue,” Ginex said. “The planing will fall on (assistant village manager) Keith (Sbiral) and I now. Development still has to go on.”

  • Palin sees void in U.S. leadership

Leaders of other countries are looking at America in vain for its leadership while America alienates its allies, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin said.

The 2008 Republican candidate for vice president spoke to a group of about 1,100 Saturday at Five Points Washington’s “Lessons From Leaders” speakers series. Below are more points from the speech:

“I see the people around the globe, based on what we’re hearing from leaders of other countries, they are looking at us in vain for our leadership. Some leaders are vacillating and even alienating our allies,” Palin said.

“This isn’t a time when we want to poke an ally like Israel in the eye. We want to make sure that our allies know we are safe and secure and we will share our security with them.”

She criticized Congress for its approval of a health care reform bill. “We didn’t want it, we couldn’t afford it and it made no sense, (Congress) did it anyway. We need to start telling them louder and louder (that) just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”

She said the country needs a dose of “Midwestern common sense” and paid homage to former President Ronald Reagan, a Eureka College graduate, who she said believed in limited government in order to expand opportunity and prosperity.

“Say what you will about the humble Eureka College-educated Ronald Reagan, but he could have told our Harvard-educated president that his debt-ridden exercise . . . will not play in Peoria.”

She stressed principles of fiscal restraint – calling health care legislation the president signed the “mother of all unfunded mandates” – limited government and said there should be a focus on energy independence. America should tap into energy reserves and nuclear technology so it is not beholden to foreign regimes.

“There is an inherent link between energy and prosperity and energy and security and energy and freedom,” she said. “It’s a matter of not having the political will and that’s something that must change, or our nation will become insolvent.”

Prosperity, Palin said, can’t be legislated from Washington, D.C. “We can’t grow our economy by growing government and the federal deficit and the national debt. We have to work our way back to a sound economy. We have to earn it one small business, one entrepreneur, one job at a time.”

Leadership was the theme of Palin’s address. The best leaders are not driven by personal ambition, personal agendas or power struggles, she said.

She lauded the tea party movement, a “bottoms-up movement of the people.”

“They’re letting Washington know that what we need are leaders who will listen, and not lecture us. Leaders who will respect the will of the people and respect the wisdom of the people, as Jefferson used to say. And we want leadership that reflects common sense principles and common sense solutions,” Palin said.

  • Mercedes-Benz Shooting Break Concept hints at future CLS Estate

It was reported about a month ago that Mercedes-Benz is working on a shooting brake version of its new CLS – well, here it is, in concept form at least. The Stuttgart automaker today took the wraps off of its new Shooting Break Concept, which will make its debut at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show later this week.

Described as a “further insight by Mercedes designers into the possible future development of the Coupe concept,” the model seems to be a mix of the F800 Style Concept, the SLS AMG and the FASCINATION concept.

Power for the Mercedes-Benz Shooting Break Concept comes from a new 3.5L V6 engine making 306-hp and a maximum torque of 273 lb-ft. The model also features BlueEFFICIENCY technology to increase fuel-savings.

When the Shooting Break Concept enters production it will compete with the likes of the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo – but hey, it looks much better than BMW’s version.

    Mercedes-Benz Shooting Break Concept:

    Press Release:

THE SHOOTING BREAK CONCEPT CAR: TAKING THE COUPÉ DESIGN TO NEW HEIGHTS

World premiere at “Auto China 2010″

    * Innovation four-door Coupé with sloping tail end
    * World premiere: dynamic full LED headlamps
    * Forerunner: new V6 petrol engine with direct injection

In October 2004 Mercedes-Benz established a new market segment with the four-door Coupé CLS. In September 2008, the brand revealed a fresh and exciting interpretation of the emotionally-appealing Coupé-based design in the form of the FASCINATION concept car. Now making its premiere at Auto China 2010 is the Shooting Break concept car – a further insight by Mercedes designers into the possible future development of the Coupé concept. The Shooting Break concept car also represents a clear indication of the further emotional appeal of the Mercedes design idiom.

Wide and flat, with a long bonnet and a roof which continues through to the rear: the Shooting Break concept car features some astonishing proportions which at the same time are clearly reminiscent of another design icon – the CLS. The design of the front is completely new, but makes use of elements which are mindful of the SLS AMG super sports car: the radiator grille, with the large star and eye-catching, bionic slats, is not integrated into the bonnet but has been designed separately in the form of a “soft nose”. The grille is flanked on each side by full LED headlamps, which for the first time feature LED technology for all of the usual dynamic light functions. The side profile is given a touch of dynamism thanks to the high, exaggerated beltline sweeping towards the rear, and the dramatic character line which is supported by the powerful-looking rear wheel arches. The coupé-like side view is also emphasised with a low window design which also highlights the greenhouse with polished aluminium trim.

The interior is dominated by natural wood and leather materials. One eye-catching feature is the large full-length centre console. It highlights the four- seat layout as well as the high levels of comfort afforded by the Shooting Break concept car. The wooden floor of the luggage compartment reflects the true interpretation of this area of the vehicle, where the dark-stained silky oak contrasts against inlaid aluminium protective loading strips.

The Shooting Break concept car is driven by the forerunner to the forthcoming new V-engine generation from Mercedes-Benz. The V6 benefits from a 60° cylinder angle and a displacement of 3.5 litres, and is characterised by direct injection featuring a control system which enables lean-burn operation. The six-cylinder engine produces 225 kW (306 hp) with a maximum torque of 370 Nm and in line with the BlueEFFICIENCY criteria of Mercedes-Benz also sets new standards among the competition in terms of fuel consumption.

    The exterior: stylish and sporty

The proportions are clearly those of a coupé: the long bonnet, narrow-look windows with frameless side windows, and dynamic roof sloping back towards the rear create a basic stance with which it looks ready for the off. It is only when taking a second look that it becomes clear that the Shooting Break concept car actually has four doors and an estate rear. As such, this study in design reveals its philosophical links with the four-door CLS Coupé, a car which has established a new market segment since 2004 and today is already seen as a design icon which is likely to occupy a very special place in the history of the motor car. The Shooting Break concept car may well be looked back on at some point as having played a similar role, taking ideas from the FASCINATION concept car premiered in 2008 and projecting them into the future.

“The Shooting Break concept car is based on the great tradition of a stylish, cultivated sportiness which has always characterised the great Mercedes Coupés, and it takes this unique legacy an exciting step further,” explains Professor Gorden Wagener, chief designer at Mercedes-Benz. “At the same time it points the way towards the future design idiom of Mercedes-Benz.”

The vocabulary of the design idiom includes the contrasting play between lines and exaggerated areas, which combine to create an animated area of interaction. The expressive design of the front immediately catches the eye, using elements which are mindful of the SLS AMG super sports car, and with a radiator grille which for the first time has been designed as a “soft nose” and is not integrated into the bonnet. This contributes to better pedestrian protection and at the same time also helps to improve the focus on the long, sporty bonnet. The grille is dominated by the large central star, highlighting its relationship to the other Coupés of the Mercedes brand. It is supported by bionic, curved grille slats. Their curved design is reflected in the expressive look of the front apron and air intakes.

Particularly eye-catching are the full LED headlamps, which for the first time offer all of the regular dynamic light functions using LED technology. Inside they are divided into three arrow-shaped layers from top to bottom: the upper layer contains an LED indicator, beneath which is a striking LED side light offering LED low beam functions. The side light can also be seen when the dipped beam function is switched on, thereby creating a novel and separate night-time design and distinctive look. The lowest level of the headlamp houses the main beam and nightview functions. A total of 71 LEDs not only provide an unmistakable appearance, but also a significantly enhanced view of the road compared with previous systems.

The side profile of the Shooting Break concept car is dominated by the low, frameless side windows, the coupé-like shape of which is further highlighted with the incorporation of a polished aluminium frame along the body. Thanks to the positioning of the outside mirrors on the beltline, the side line is emphasised and all-round visibility has been improved in the region of the A-pillars. The side windows are supported on a high beltline, which slopes towards the rear in a fresh interpretation of the classic “dropping line” of iconic Mercedes Coupés. An additional exciting touch has been made with the prominent, muscular hip points which forcefully support the side line. This interaction gives the impression of a sprinter, poised in the starting blocks, ready to release an explosive forward surge of energy. The roof follows through to the rear and also drops away in typical coupé fashion. Another special feature is the recessed, filigree door handles, which emerge on being touched with the aid of sensors to allow access to the interior.

The side view is rounded off with wide wrap-around tail lights featuring LED technology. As such they form a linking element to the low, steeply-angled estate car rear end with top-hinged tailgate. The shape is emphasised by the broad shoulder line, which is clearly visible from behind and supports the lowered-look greenhouse. The twin pipe exhaust system, with two polished exhaust covers, is integrated into the rear bumper, which features an elegantly curved wing.

Also contributing to the special appearance of the Shooting Break concept car is the exceptional paint finish. A satin-finish clear coat has been used, which gives the vehicle’s allanite grey magno colour a mysterious glint and also further brings out the Coupé’s exquisite lines.

The sporty look of the Shooting Break concept car is complemented with large 20-inch sterling silver wheels, featuring a special bionically arranged five-spoke filigree design. They allow a glimpse of the large brake discs behind. The front wheels are fitted with 255/30 ZR 20 tyres, while the rear of this exceptional vehicle sits on 285/25 ZR 20 tyres.

The interior: design makes quality noticeable; high-quality materials,hand-crafted perfection

A large panoramic glass sunroof provides a glimpse into the high-quality, perfectly hand-crafted interior of the Shooting Break concept car, where natural materials such as wood and leather dominate. Wood is used on the trim elements and door pulls, the instrument panel and centre console, and primarily on the luggage compartment floor in the rear. When it came to choosing the wood, the interior designers opted for silky oak on account of its unusual, lens-shaped texture. The wooden floor in the luggage compartment has inlaid aluminium protective loading strips, and is reminiscent of finishes normally seen in yacht building.

Four saddle bags along the sides of the luggage compartment are useful for storing small tools. They are finished in leather, a material which has been used extensively throughout the Shooting Break concept car: in fact, almost ten square metres of leather have been incorporated into the interior. Light sections of porcelain-coloured nappa leather form an attractive contrast to the dark-brown natural-coloured aniline leather and perforated metallic-silver finish seat cushions and door centre panels. Extensive double-lapped stitching and discerning colour-coordinated upholstery seat piping reflect the hand-crafted perfection and attention to detail, as does the tuck stitching on the instrument panel, door sill covers and seat backrests, all of which highlights the contours of the components extremely well.

Perfection and attention to detail also apply to the trim elements. While on the exterior they are polished to a high-sheen finish, in the interior they feature a matt finish. A total of seven manual processes are necessary – from grinding to polishing – to transform the components, which are milled completely from aluminium, into their final decorative form. The matt finish of the interior trim has also served as inspiration for the metallic-silver leather on the seats, door centre panels and bags in the luggage compartment. The deep-pile carpet in the footwell – finished in porcelain colour – is a luxurious material used by Maybach-Manufaktur. The light-coloured roof liner made of silk cloth adds the finishing touch to the impression of comfortable elegance in the interior.

The Shooting Break concept car is clearly a four-seater. The four identically shaped leather seats have a touch of the sports car about them thanks to their integrated head restraints. Openings in the upper area of the backrests make it possible to see through the seats. A large full-length wood console on the transmission tunnel provides a visual divide between driver and front passenger and at the same time indulges the occupants with two large leather-covered armrests. It also houses two cup holders as well as controls for the rear-compartment air conditioning. The centre console is finished off at the rear with inlaid work: curved Mercedes lettering which harks back to the style of the 1920s. The striking cursive-script lettering is also repeated on the front door sills.

Since the central screen has been integrated into the upper part of the instrument panel, the cockpit has a “wrap-around” effect. The elegant verve and bionic details of the exterior are captured, among other things, in the dynamic wave-design air vents in the instrument panel. An analogue clock sits in the centre. The instrument cluster comprises three tubes for dial-type gauges as well as a colour display for service indications.

The headlamps: exciting LED technology offering full functionality

The Shooting Break concept car has dynamic full LED headlamps, which combine the exciting daylight colour impression of LED technology with the performance, functionality and energy efficiency of today’s bi-xenon light generation. The new light system, due to make its debut in series production this year, features the Intelligent Light System which has already been tried and tested in Mercedes models with bi-xenon headlamps. Its five light functions – country lights, motorway lights, enhanced fog lights, active curve lights and cornering lights -have been specifically designed for typical driving or weather conditions.

The light specialists at Mercedes-Benz have also been able to combine LED technology with the innovative Adaptive Highbeam Assist for the first time, leading to a completely new level of safety at night.

The engine: enhanced performance, enhanced efficiency

The Shooting Break concept car is driven by the forerunner to the forthcoming new V-engine generation from Mercedes-Benz. The special features of the spray-guided direct injection engine include the latest generation of piezo-electric injection valves which enable multiple injections. Better lean operation is possible thanks to load monitoring of the pressure information. Even the operation of the ancillary components has been made efficient and there is also a start/stop function. The V6 with a 60° cylinder angle and displacement of 3.5 litres produces 225 kW (306 hp) with a maximum torque of 370 Nm.

It’s all in a name: the origins of the name “Shooting Break”

Break, or the homonym Brake, was the name once given to carriages used to “break” in wild horses and also to restrict (or “brake”) their urge to move, so that they could be put to use as work horses. Since the carts could easily be broken as part of this process, people tended not to use ones which they may have urgently needed for other purposes. Where necessary, “Brakes” were often fitted out with variable bodies, which were only really used to carry along anything that may have been necessary for the hunt, for example. Any such vehicle which was used when going out shooting was called a Shooting Brake or Shooting Break. In the 1960s and 1970s motorised Shooting Breaks were popular in Great Britain – exclusive cross-over vehicles, which combined the luxuriousness of a coupé with the luggage space of an estate.

  • Steve Jacobs, Sony Electronics and CBS News Veteran, Named President of Ubiquity Broadcasting Corporation

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif., April 19 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Steve Jacobs is bringing his wealth of experience and success in broadcasting, digital technologies, strategic alliances and business development to a new role as President of Ubiquity Broadcasting Corporation.

In making the announcement of Jacob’s appointment, Ubiquity Founder, Chairman and CEO Chris Carmichael says, “Steve brings us a plethora of knowledge and professionalism.  He brings a broadcast background and a technology background.  And, he can execute, implement, and monetize.”

Jacobs defines Ubiquity as “really a hybrid.  It’s a technology company.  It’s a media company, and it’s a licensing – and relatively soon, an application company.  Ubiquity represents a fusion of content, technology and commerce.  Everything I’ve done in my previous professional lives has prepared me for this job.”

Most recently, Jacobs served as Vice President of Broadband Strategy and Alliances at Sony Electronics, where he was responsible for the company’s relationships with myriad media companies worldwide.  He was also integrally involved with Sony’s 3D development.  Previously, at Sony Corporation of America (SCA), he played a critical role in negotiating an industry-leading Open Cable agreement between Sony, the major multiple system operators, and Cable Labs.   As Senior Vice President for Sony’s Broadcast and Professional Systems Division (BPSD) he led the company’s content creation business and was at the forefront of Sony’s transition from a traditional analog, hardware-based business to its current industry-leading position as a digital, application-based marketing and sales organizations.

Jacobs’ tenure at Sony followed an equally impressive career in broadcast journalism.  For over 15 years, he worked at CBS News in a variety of roles including Senior Producer for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and Senior Producer, then Executive Producer for CBS News Special Events.  Following the 1996 Presidential Elections, Jacobs was instrumental in creating CBS.com, serving as Executive Producer for News.

“Steve makes technology easy to understand,” says John Scarcella, President, Broadcast and Business Solutions Company, Sony Electronics.  ”His ability to focus on the customer and clearly communicate, in simple terms, the innovative approach that Ubiquity is taking with respect to it’s ‘anytime, anywhere’ platform, will surely aid in establishing Ubiquity’s position.  Steve is uniquely qualified to lead Ubiquity Broadcasting as it redefines content creation and distribution in the digital age.”

“The best thing about Steve is that his background is a complement to ours,” says Connie Jordan, Ubiquity Vice President, Intellectual Property.  ”With his breadth of experience, this is a perfect fit for Ubiquity as we move forward. You have to grow, and you need the right people to do that.  That’s Steve in a nutshell.”  She adds, “Steve’s an ultra-smart guy.”

Jacobs has received numerous awards including a News Emmy Award for an unprecedented ABC series on the Soviet Union.  He has also been honored by the Broadcast Design Association and Women in Radio and Television.  With his colleagues at CBS News, he received the George Polk Award for international reporting for their coverage of the Democracy Spring and Tiananmen Square uprising.   He often speaks at industry conferences and events addressing the applications of technology to editorial and business issues.

Jacobs believes that Ubiquity has “arrived at the intersection of capabilities and opportunities.  It’s a very exciting time to be here.”

PALMDALE, Calif., April 19 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — The second Boeing (NYSE: BA) 747-8 Freighter, RC521, landed in Palmdale, Calif., today, marking the beginning of a planned transition of 747-8 Freighter testing to Southern California. The more than four-hour flight from Boeing Field in Seattle included testing on avionics and cruise performance.

“Taking the airplane to Palmdale is a big step,” said Mo Yahyavi, vice president and general manager of the 747 program. “The team is focused on ensuring a seamless transition into the next phase of the flight-test program as we prepare to expand testing of the 747-8 Freighter’s performance characteristics.”

The airplane will be stationed in Palmdale for the majority of its scheduled flight-test program. The crew will conduct several tests on the airplane with fuel-mileage and engine-performance testing as key focus areas.

“Palmdale provides an excellent test environment for the 747-8 Freighter,” said Andy Hammer, 747 test program manager. “It allows us to take full advantage of one of the world’s premier experimental test flight facilities and the excellent weather conditions to meet our flight-test requirements on the road to obtaining our amended type certification.”

In the coming weeks, the two other 747-8 airplanes in the flight-test fleet will join RC521 in Southern California.

The entire flight-test program calls for the three airplanes to perform a total of about 3,700 hours of ground and air testing. The first 747-8 Freighter delivery to Cargolux is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

  • Shinhan Bank Increases Employee Productivity and Improves Customer Service With Windows 7

Korean bank embraces Windows 7 to reduce operating costs, enhance security and improve competitive performance.

SINGAPORE, April 19 /CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM/ — Microsoft Corp. today announced at Asian Banker Summit 2010 that Shinhan Bank has successfully tested and begun deployment of Windows 7 to its large network of branch offices in Korea to help address its data security and desktop performance needs.

    (Logo:  http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

Headquartered in Seoul, Shinhan Bank is one of the largest multiservice financial institutions in the Republic of Korea, with 13,000 employees and more than 1,000 branch offices throughout the country. The local branches provide customer service via 10,000 remote desktop computers. Branch employees access and maintain user accounts using proprietary, integrated Java-based applications, as well as several other Java-based and Flash-based line-of-business applications.

The bank was faced with ever-increasing security requirements, and the complicated maintenance of its client operating system was hampering IT and worker efficiency. Shinhan Bank sought to improve employees’ productivity and ability to help customers, while further enhancing the security of customer data.

“The financial industry is held to high standards for safeguarding customer information against theft or loss — a responsibility that Shinhan Bank makes a primary concern,” said Kim Jangon, IT General Management Department, Shinhan Bank. “In evaluating new operating systems, however, we also realized that we needed to strike the right balance between security and system performance to meet our employee productivity and customer service objectives. Windows 7 enables us to strike this balance.”

To address privacy and security concerns, Shinhan Bank sought ways to encrypt data not just on the network, but also on individual desktop computers and removable storage devices at the operating system level. Although the bank was continuously exploring ways to enhance security at the operating system level, it did not want to limit the quality of service that its customers expected. Older hardware and increasingly more complicated systems management requirements were both factors negatively affecting the speed and efficiency of branch desktop computers.

The IT department, too, was seeing diminishing returns on its client computer investments and wanted an operating system that would enable it to take advantage of common CPU advancements, such as quad-core CPUs, to run at optimum performance. To properly manage its remote computers, Shinhan Bank also required an operating system that would enable enhanced systems monitoring, especially the capability to review activity for accurate and up-to-date licensing of applications installed on each individual desktop.

The IT department of Shinhan Bank analyzed the inconvenience, revenue loss and potential business risks of continuing to support an older operating system and decided to upgrade all 10,000 remote workstations, which make up the majority of the bank’s corporate environment, to the beta version of Windows 7 operating system and to the Windows Internet Explorer 8 browser.

Shinhan Bank established a plan to start its migration to Windows 7 and complete a companywide deployment by October 2010, with the goal of zero transition problems. For this initial phase of the deployment, Shinhan Bank worked with Microsoft Services to perform thorough application compatibility testing, with emphasis on the Java-based terminal application. Shinhan Bank evaluated Windows 7 for proper display and usability factors, and tested various Web applications for compatibility issues with Windows Internet Explorer 8.

Windows 7: Delivering on the Promise of a High-Performance Desktop

As a result of preliminary tests, Shinhan has found new ways to tighten security, both on the company network and on individual terminals. With deployment under way, employees are more productive due to improved computer performance, customers are happier, and IT costs are going down.

As a result of deploying Windows 7, Shinhan Bank is seeing enhanced performance and application speed on its existing desktop computers — and a corresponding improvement in employee productivity and customer satisfaction. Also, through simplifying its IT infrastructure, the bank is reducing operational costs and costs normally associated with upgrading an operating system — without sacrificing security or user access.

Shinhan Bank found that Windows 7 performed extremely well on a range of desktop computers, including the standard units used at branch offices. As a result of increased performance and application response speed, the bank is confident it will significantly enhance the user experience for employees who work on remote terminals.

The IT department found that compatibility issues were minimal across its entire application portfolio, helping to avoid the costs normally associated with upgrading an operating system. The bank was able to use its existing IT infrastructure and did not need to make costly investments in new software or spend valuable resources developing new, in-house applications.

Shinhan Bank is also able to reduce costs by avoiding the compounding difficulty of managing an older operating system, including maintaining increasingly complex security requirements. Security enhancements in Windows 7, such as AppLocker,(1) BitLocker(2) and BitLocker To Go,(2) empower the bank with easier IT management and control. With AppLocker, the bank gets an added layer of software management for its remote desktops, without the need for additional administration. For instance, the bank can review licenses for installed applications in real time and easily determine if the applications’ use explicitly meets the company’s licensing conditions.

In addition, by using AppLocker, the bank can specify what applications can run on any computer in its network, enabling Shinhan Bank to better protect its computers from malicious or other unauthorized applications. With BitLocker, the bank can safeguard confidential customer information and sensitive corporate data from unauthorized access in the event of a stolen or lost computer. It can further extend that encryption to removable storage devices, such as USB thumb drives, with BitLocker To Go.

“Today, a new generation of business solutions is transforming IT into a strategic asset that makes it possible for leading financial institutions such as Shinhan Bank to cut costs and focus much more on the business of serving their customers. This is now made possible without crippling customer service or constraining work-force creativity and effectiveness,” said Joe Pagano, managing director of Banking and Capital Markets for the Worldwide Financial Services Industry Group at Microsoft. “New technologies such as Windows 7 are eliminating the barriers between systems and applications and automating routine tasks so IT professionals can focus on high-value work that is aligned to a bank’s strategic priorities. These technologies also help banks reduce risk, improve security and drive down support costs.”

  • Towing Company Feels The Streisand Effect After Suing A College Kid For $750k

Many readers have submitted the the story about a Kalamazoo towing company who is suing a college student for $750,000 for defamation of character and libel. Justin Kurtz started the “Kalamazoo residents against T&J Towing” group on Facebook earlier this year after his car was allegedly towed under shady circumstances. The Facebook group quickly grew to a few thousand Kalamazoo residents in about a week. In an attempt to quash the negative comments on the group’s page, T&J filed the suit, which then garnered the group even more attention thanks to posts on Consumerist and Jalopnik. Now, at over 10,000 members, the group is over 1/7th the total population of Kalamazoo itself. Once again, another company is starting to learn that using lawyers in an attempt to silence criticism can have the exact opposite effect. The Streisand Effect Hall of Fame continues to rack up inductees.
