  • 640 pieces per minute, officially calibrated!

Precise measurements despite oscillations and vibrations

Legal regulations such as the National legal for trade requirements (German abbreviation FPV) ensure the stated amounts are really inside the packing. Modern checkweighers check use either random sampling or a 100% check to find out if the stated amounts are undercut or exceeded. Depending on production speed and external interference effects, considerable requirements are placed on the checkweighers to do just that. For example, if a production plant is exposed to strong vibrations caused by wind or a tram passing by the building, the measurement values are falsified, rendering them useless. A great deal of expertise is required to make sure checkweighers supply reliable results despite such environmental influences.

  • Schaltbau GmbH at the Hanover Trade Fair

“Electromechanics for tomorrow’s world” is the motto of the Schaltbau GmbH presentation at the Hanover Trade Fair. The main emphasis is on the generation of energy from renewable sources, electro-mobility and automation for special requirements. For more information visit Hall 11, Stand D27 at the Fair, or www.schaltbau-gmbh.com.

The railway sector and floor conveyor technology have been banking on Schaltbau products for years now. But the battery contactors and charging connections in particular are also suitable for electro-mobility on the road. A further field of application for Schaltbau products is renewable energy. There is already a snap-action switch installed in the brakes of a wind park. Contactors are used in central power inverters in photovoltaic power stations. The third theme at the Hanover Fair is automation. Schaltbau products are used particularly in situations in which the safety level of a plant is high, or the operating conditions are very rugged. This includes extremes of temperature, under-water applications and very dusty surroundings. The S850 double NC snap-action switch, for instance, meets the requirements of the new Machine Directive 2006/42/EC, which came into force at the end of 2009. Plug connectors by Schaltbau, such as the DN series and the M1 Plus, are particularly suitable for use in rugged conditions. Appropriately, the M1 is installed in a sewage plant.

  • Simplicity®: the Preferred Choice for ADI’s New De-burring System

ADI in Sheffield Village, Ohio has designed and built innovative custom machine systems for industrial applications for more than 50 years. Their latest problem-solving design, a de-burring system that removes burrs from hobbed gears, was constructed using a series of drive platforms.

    The Application
For the de-burring system to succeed, ADI required a linear motion technology that could perform under 50,000 lbs of load in a dirty, industrial machine-tool work area. De-burring is the process of removing burrs, or excess material, from large gears (70-120” in diameter). Eventually, these gears will be used as the driving mechanism for applications such as crane turn tables and energy efficient wind turbines.

The de-burring machine rotates the gear through the robotic grinding station, then through each brushing station for an assured, smooth end-product. Excess material not removed, could result in noise, binding and installation problems. Three drive platforms as well as the robot and brush stations, riding on PBC linear bearing system, adjust to the locations for various sizes of geared rings.

    The Problem
50,000 lbs of load and harsh environment restricted what technology ADI could use for linear motion. Ball-bearing systems would deteriorate with vibration and spall shafting under the heavy load. Excess dirt, dust and particulate can collect in the ball cages, resulting in stalling and catastrophic failure. The drive platforms, though very important to adjust for different gear sizes, are seldom used for day-to-day functions; thus requiring a linear system that needs little lubrication.

    The Solution
For this application, ADI favored plane bearing technology due to its ability to thrive in contaminated environments and sustain even disbursement of forces versus the small point of contact provided by ball-bearings. Additionally, the bearings need to prevent stick-slip, a common problem to bearing systems which are not routinely in motion. Simplicity® plane bearings require little to no upkeep maintenance, excel in harsh environments and handle heavy load applications. This is due to the bearings’ design and FrelonGold® liner. Simplicity® bearings can run for years under constant or intermittent use. The low friction, self-lubricating system requires no additional grease or oil (as long as application is within design criteria)–providing a reliable, smooth and long-lasting linear motion system!

  • House chairman requests information from Toyota ahead of May hearing

Ahead of a May 6 Congressional hearing on Capitol Hill, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman has asked Toyota and its consultant partner Exponent to hand over any findings that could potentially link faulty electronics with the company’s unintended acceleration problems.

Waxman asked for “any documents, including reports, analyses or other communications, describing the results of Exponent’s work for Toyota related to unintended acceleration or electronic throttle-control systems.”

Toyota maintains that its vehicle electronics are not to blame for the company’s unintended acceleration woes. According to the Japanese automaker, Exponent’s preliminary findings support its stance.

To ensure all aspects of Toyota’s electronics are being closely scrutinized, Waxman’s letter also requested evidence of the scope of Exponent’s investigation. Toyota sales head Jim Lentz and Exponent CEO Paul Johnson have been asked to testify at the May hearing.

  • For Small Authors, eBooks Are Much Better Than Being Printed On Pulp

Hephaestus writes “This is a different perspective on the e-books as the killer of the book publishing industry. It’s a take from the small author perspective.

As the eBook experience improves, especially with the increased adoption of the Kindle and iPad, authors now have the same opportunity that exists now for musicians to exploit new opportunities. Like the music world, most writers also don’t expect to make a great living from writing, so for them, exposure to readers is more valuable than revenue:

If you give a writer a choice between $10,000 and 10,000 readers, the writer will always choose the latter.

After all, having 10,000 readers is a fantastic connection with which to work — at that point, all an author would have to do to make money would be to give the readers a reason to buy. For writers, there’s already a fantastic finite good that they can sell, the printed book. While this may seem counter-intuitive, we’ve seen this model work before: after a publisher gave away digital copies of a book for free, they saw their physical book sales increase 20x. So, like the musicians who embrace the opportunities that the new economy offers, writers have a similar entrepreneurial opportunity.

  • VAIO Brand is Being Diluted?

Today we have been getting reports from the Internet universe that a new division within VAIO will be taking place and Sony calls it “division two” which pretty much means that third party brands will be cranking out VAIO notebooks. Supposedly this move will allow VAIO notebooks become less expensive. Sony will still be designing and making VAIOs in its Japanese and Chinese factories. In an exclusive interview with PC Pro, the deputy president of Sony VAIO’s Business Group announced a two-tier strategy for the company’s laptop division, with “division one” for the VAIO laptops designed and built by Sony, and a “division two” for VAIO models built by its partners.

I have checked out a number of comments and a lot of them were not happy with Sony’s move and a concern for quality and design would be at risk. We are pretty much used to Sony’s awesome design in its VAIO line and Akahane insisted the new products would be of the same quality as existing VAIOs. “The quality criteria itself is no different between division number one and division number two.” Instead the difference will be in the technology. “We will include new technology [such as the latest processors] in division number one first, and then we can learn and we can get the know-how, then we can transfer [the technology] to the products coming from division two.”

I am not too happy about this move either and do not support this idea, but we shall see what the market does and how consumers react after all.

  • Nissan’s $3,000 Tata Nano rival expected to increase company’s profitability

Nissan’s upcoming $3,000 Tata Nano rival for the Indian market is expected to increase the company’s profitability as it takes advantage’s of its local partner’s, Bajaj Auto Ltd., low-cost production techniques.

Gilles Normand, Nissan’s corporate vice president in charge of Africa, the Middle East and India, said that while in talks with Bajaj, the company “discovered that their margin on three-wheeler activities is by far above our current margin on our four-wheeler activities.” He said that “the low-cost car will contribute to our growth in terms of volume and profitability.”

The subcompact vehicle, expected to debut in 2011, will go on sale in India in 2012. The $3,000 price-tag is being kept as a goal to stay competitive with the Tata Nano.

About 50 percent of the Indian four-wheel auto market consists of models priced below $8,000, Normand said.

  • Is Sony Discontinuing PS2?

It’s been interesting to watch a fun ride of PlayStation 2 since its conception and it has been a fun one! For Sony it has been one of the best selling products and with its price adjustments as years passed by, it became a very affordable console. However, we have been getting a vibe that pretty soon PlayStation 2 may be disappearing from the shelves of the stores. If you shop around for it now you may notice a slight price adjustment which comes to $99.97 which for pretty much means stores will not be ordering anymore from Sony. It may very well signal the end of the beloved PS2.

To stay on the news of the PlayStation world, here is another interesting insider piece of information for you. Remember Sony mentioned that there would be a shortage of PlayStation 3 this time around? Apparently the reason for this is due to the limited availability of Blu-ray drives for the past few months. Hopefully the supply of those parts is being taken care of and PlayStation 3 units will be populating store shelves as usual.
