  • April… Where’s The Fool?

04.15.10 07:04 AM posted by Skip MacLure

I understand he can be seen flitting around the White House, dodg…, er, avoiding the press whenever possible. Even his extreme leftist lap dogs find it difficult to obtain access to His Benificence. Is it that his handlers have figured out that he doesn’t do well off the cuff? Is it because even the tame press is starting to ask a few real questions… few and far between, but commendable none-the-less as a departure from the usual slavish pandering to the administration, timid though these questions would be coming from the ultra left’s most staid guardians of political correctness.

Seems like the President has been acting a little gun shy since his tangle with Fox’s Bret Baier. Sooner or later, even some of the tame press are going to start asking the right questions. Obama knows that the lie lines on most of his policies are about to run their course and reality begins to stream in. This guy has told lie after lie with the slickness of a snake-oil pitch man. Same story, sooner or later somebody is going to call him on some of his stuff. We’ve already seen how this self-absorbed narcissist reacts to any sort of criticism. In his mind’s eye he can do no wrong, he’s on a mission and he’s a committed radical ideologue.

He plays the buffoon on the international stage to the amusement of his third-world dictator audience, while at home he strangles the life from the nation with his insane fiscal and economic Keynesian gymnastics. We face a world far more dangerous and volatile than at almost any time in our history. We have sworn enemies who are at war with us, while our President prances from one meaningless conference or forum to another with apologies to all and sundry, while playing havoc with our national security interests and appeasing people we shouldn’t be talking to. read more »

  • Eyeballs still don’t pay the bills

Ning is laying off 40% of its staff and dumping free versions of its service. That’s a shitty day for the people who lost their job and the folks left behind without their coworkers. I went through a few rounds back in the dotcom days and fun it was not.

But I can’t help but be puzzled by the coverage of this. Here’s TechCrunch on the situation:

While the massive layoffs are obviously a big hit to the company, it isn’t all bad news for Ning: the service is still seeing its traffic grow according to comScore. But traffic growth is no longer good enough for the company — it needs to start generating some serious revenue, and advertising clearly isn’t cutting it.

Are you kidding me? The company has blown through $120MM of VC funding over six years, built up massive traffic, yet just had to slash and burn, and you’re saying that “traffic growth is no longer good enough”. How the hell was it ever good enough?

Ning’s problem is not a lack of eyeballs but its inability to turn them into cash money to pay the bills. Getting more of something that’s a net-negative is not going to make up for it.

That was always their problem. From day one. Just like it’s any other business’ problem. Acting all shocked and surprised now is just incredibly ignorant of our industry’s very recent past.

This is the same kind of ignorance that goes on to celebrate so-called businesses successes before they posted black numbers on the balance sheet. Until that happens it’s all conjecture and possible maybes.

The just-give-it-away-for-free-and-they-will-come-and-we’ll-be-rich automatron is as broken now as it was in 2001.

  • 2011 Buick Excelle compact sedan spotted hanging out undisguised

Following the Buick Regal, GM’s next plans for the brand consist of a compact sedan based on the Buick Excelle XT, which itself is based on the Opel Astra. The model is scheduled to make its Chinese debut next week at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, but you can always count on the Internet for an earlier preview.

Click here for prices on the 2010 Buick LaCrosse.

The new 2011 Buick Excelle sedan was caught totally uncovered hanging out somewhere out there in the world.

We’ll have more details next week but expect the Buick Excelle to be available only with 4-cylinder engines (at least one turbocharged versions). No word on when the compact Buick will make its way to the United States.

  • THIS Is Why Cities Are Going Broke

Allen Texas Football Stadium 10It’s no secret that in the midwest and southern parts of the United States, high school football is HUGE.

So that is why Allen, Texas, a town that’s seen explosive growth in the past few decades, is building a $59.6 million football stadium for its high school. The high school is the only one in the district and is over 600,000 square feet and accommodates to 3900 students.

The stadium is scheduled to open in late 2012 and will feature a video scoreboard, four concession stands, 12 restrooms, and 18,000 seats.

Of course, the town has to raise money to build the stadium.  And, lucky for us, there’s a batch of photos in their bond proposal showing how it will look once completed.

Check out the town’s bond presentation >

  • Good news and bad

    Published April 14, 2010
    By Michelle Dupler, Tri-City Herald

One Tri-City college campus appears to have dodged a budgetary bullet while another prepares for another round of painful cuts.

Washington State University officials said Tuesday that they’re not asking the Tri-City regional campus to make any cuts as it figures out how to slash $13.5 million from its overall operating budget.

Joan King, WSU executive director of planning and budget in Pullman, said the four-campus university system would try to make up the deficit through voluntary retirements and holding open vacant positions as people leave.

“We will hold the budget cuts centrally,” King said. “There are no specific cuts identified for the Tri-Cities.”

College and university officials have been on tenterhooks in recent months as the state Legislature struggled to adopt a supplemental budget balancing a $2.8 billion deficit for the remainder of the 2009-11 biennium.

WSU already took a $54 million, or more than 10 percent, cut to its state funding in 2009. The reduction led the university to eliminate nearly 200 jobs and hold open nearly 170 more.

Pasco-based Columbia Basin College lost $3.4 million, or about 13 percent, in state funding from its $23 million allocation.

That led the community college to eliminate its fire science day classes, and human services, paralegal and auto body programs.

CBC President Rich Cummins now is preparing for another $1.6 million in cuts under the budget adopted by the Legislature early Tuesday — the last day of a 30-day special session.

“This is going to be hard,” Cummins said. “I’ve read a lot of economic reports and have monthly meetings with (college economists). It’s going to be a long slog ahead.”

Both campuses have experienced record levels of growth over the last several years.

WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Vicky Carwein said applications and admissions are both up compared to this time last year, while Cummins said CBC enrollment numbers remain high as displaced workers look for retraining and high school students take advantage of the Running Start program.

Cummins said he’ll do everything he can to make sure budget cuts at CBC don’t affect the quality of instruction.

“I wish higher ed could have been better protected,” Cummins said. “Once we turn off the education pipeline we begin turning off the future. At the same time, I understand the economy and understand business and know times are tough everywhere. … There is no way we’re going to allow this to weaken us as a college. It may make us smaller, but it won’t diminish us.”

2011 Hyundai Accent prototype – Click either image for high-res image gallery

Typically when we show you spy shots, you’re seeing photographs taken by people not directly employed by Autoblog. Today, however, is different. Yours Truly and Drew Phillips were driving back from San Diego after the Aptera state-of-the-state address. We were getting off the phone with Senior Editor Damon Lavrinc when I said, “And Drew’s going to pull out his camera and look to his right.” Thar she blows, a fully dressed up prototype, about to exit the freeway in heavy, mid-day Irvine traffic.

We pull up next to the car at the bottom of the off ramp. “Don’t look at them!” Drew advised, wanting to wait until we had at least one clear shot until we alerted them of our true nature. Still, we were scrambling to figure out what was idling next to us. At first glance, I thought the compact, obvious B-segment car might be a Ford Fiesta sedan. But every Fiesta we’ve ever seen sports rear drums, not big discs like this camo’d car. Also, the side mirrors looked different. However, we could see the top of the center stack and it featured lots of sharp looking chrome bits, quite like the diminutive Ford. “It’s definitely a Fiesta” I said confidently to Drew. “Look at the interior.”

“Isn’t that a Hyundai “H” on the steering wheel?” Drew pointed out. And so it was. Then the light turned green. We got in their rear three-quarter blind spot, and Drew’s Nikon suddenly exploded in a volley of “Click-Click-Click-Click.” We tailed them until the next light and then Drew leaned across me and let ‘er rip. At this point, the Accent’s passenger (we had already determined that this must be the new Accent) had made us. Drew jumped in the back seat and slid his lens out the window and began firing. The jig was up – but the game was on. Click through to the jump to read the rest of what happened.

  • Video: Second-ever iPad car installation keeps it simple, maintains factory tech

Second in-car iPad installation by SoundMan Car Audio – Click above to view video after the jump

The gang at SoundMan Car Audio was the first to install an Apple iPad into an automobile when they dropped one into the dash of a Toyota Tacoma pickup the very day the device was officially released. That install was pretty slick, but required a bit of customization to the dash and a relocation of the controls. Now that they’ve had more than a week to think about it, SoundMan has once again done a car install of the wündertablet, this time sticking it into the dash of a 2004 Nissan Maxima.

    Follow the jump
to see how the follow-up install went, but know that SoundMan has taken a remarkably different tack with this configuration, making a simple notched slot for the tablet to slip into, with a single plug leading to the existing audio system’s aux jack. Slipping the iPad out of its holder reveals that the Max’s stock navigation and back-up cam screen are still functioning in their original locations. Assuming glare isn’t an issue, this install is very trick.

  • Use Twitter to Boost Traffic

Twitter can be a great way to get traffic to your website. Just popping on once in a while and posting a link isn’t going to do much for your cause, though. In order to really succeed, you need to really use Twitter as a social networking tool. That means networking with others should be your main focus, not advertising.

To increase traffic, there are two main techniques which will serve you well. First, focus on making friends. Not just any friends but those related to your niche. Look for the big names in your niche and then take a look at the people they follow and their followers, as well. For example, if you are in the blogging niche, you would follow ProBlogger. Then follow the people he is following (Chris Brogan, Men with Pens, etc.).
    icantinternet on twitter
Make sure to interact with people, replying to things they say. This catches their attention and if they like what they see, you will have gained another follower. Most people will also check out your website before following you. If you are regularly posting quality content to Twitter, you can be sure that anyone checking out your tweetstream will be interested in following you. Avoid posting junk and try to stick to your niche if you want targeted traffic for your business.

Don’t forget SEO when you’re on Twitter, either. These days, Google and Bing are indexing tweets, so using your keywords actually has an impact on how much traffic you get to your Twitter account. This, in turn, affects website traffic.

Your profile should also contain your keywords and be descriptive. Don’t use just two or three words, make sure you give people a reason to follow you by explaining who you are in the space you have available. Be sure to upload a photo of yourself, which tends to instill trust in potential followers. You want to impress when they click through to your profile to check you out.

Twitter can be a very valuable source of website traffic, but only if you actually participate in the network of fascinating people there. Simply throwing up a link or ad every few days will only show you up as someone who doesn’t play by the rules and you’ll be ignored. Take the time to interact, seek out new people to follow and stay on topic and you will rapidly see a boost in traffic.

  • Is Europe About To Scream?

    edvard much scream

    Remember….

This is from CNN in 2003:

For those who have ever wondered why the sky was a lurid red in “The Scream” — Edvard Munch’s painting of modern angst — astronomers have an answer. They blame it on a volcanic eruption half a world away.

In the first detailed analysis of what inspired the painting, an article published Tuesday in Sky and Telescope pinpointed the location in Norway where Munch and his friends were walking when the artist saw the blood-red sky depicted in the 1893 painting, and offered an explanation for why the sky seemed to be aflame.

It’s not unrealistic that if this ash plume doesn’t go away soon, and it continues to snarl air traffic and it does affect agriculture, this could have an impact on eurozone GDP.

  • Spy Shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG lights up its rotors at the ‘Ring

2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG – Click above for high-res image gallery

Each day we’re inching closer to the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS’ debut, so the Benz Boys are hard at work on the AMG variant of its swoopy four-door which should go on sale soon after the new C218-based CLS hits dealers early next year.

The AMG version is expected to be packing Mercedes’ all-new 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8, putting out 544 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque in standard guise, and 571 hp and a axle-decimating 660 lb-ft of twist when kitted out in the in the optional higher-spec trim. Power will find its way to the ground through the new E-Class’ seven-speed automatic, while beefed up brakes and suspension components round out the high-performance package.

These newest spy shots give us a glimpse of those biggie-sized, glowing rotors, along with an SLS-inspired fascia and LED daytime running lamps. The arching roofline doesn’t appear to have changed much over the outgoing model, while the rear end gains a new set of taillamps and trapezoidal quad exhausts.

Expect the new CLS to bow at the Paris Motor Show this fall, with the AMG variant – likely carrying the “6.3” designation – coming along quickly thereafter.

Image AttachmentAuthors veteran meteorologists Joe D’Aleo and Anthony Watts analyzed temperature records from all around the world for a major SPPI paper, Surface Temperature Records – Policy-driven Deception?

The startling conclusion that we cannot tell whether there was any significant “global warming” at all in the 20th century is based on numerous astonishing examples of manipulation and exaggeration of the true level and rate of “global warming”.

That is to say, leading meteorological institutions in the USA and around the world have so systematically tampered with instrumental temperature data that it cannot be safely said that there has been any significant net “global warming” in the 20th century.

Millen family talks Pikes Peak – click above to watch the video

The Millen family has quite a proud history at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, not quite up there with the Unsers, but certainly more than respectable. Rod Millen captured several class records at the Colorado mountain over the years, including an outright record of 10:04:06 set in a Toyota Celica in 1994 that stood for an astounding 13 years.

Last June, son Rhys took a Hyundai Genesis coupe to a class record in the two-wheel drive Time Attack class with a 12:09.397.

This June, Millen is headed back to the Peak with a new weapon that still wears a Hyundai badge and will still be slathered in Red Bull livery. There will be none of that production-based nonsense this time though. The younger Millen wants to take the overall record back from Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima. Millen is aiming to get the first ever sub-10 minute time at Pikes Peak and he and his team have built a new car dubbed the Genesis PM580. From the teaser video after the jump, we’re guessing that this unlimited class car will feature plenty of carbon fiber and plenty of power, presumably 5.8-liters worth of Hyundai V8 based on the nomenclature. The new car is set to be revealed on Monday, but for now you can watch the Millen family talk about the glory that is Pikes Peak. Check out the video after the jump.
