Lisa Larson Cat Figurines

I absolutely love the many whimsical pottery cats from Swedish designer Lisa Larson. Her vintage pottery is quite collectible, and can be found through antique dealers and on eBay, but these little striped cats are now available through Unica Home. This very modern striped tabby comes in three sizes and two colors, brown or grey. They are something to save up for, since the mini sells for $66 US, medium is $144, and maxi is $456. You’d definitely have to put these somewhere safely out of the reach of your cat!

Guardian Interactive Chalkboards: Map and Share Soccer Game Events

As a new, original entry towards the democratization of data visualization (think Many Eyes or Swivel specialized for sports), the free, online service Chalkboards [guardian.co.uk] allows the analysis of all events of every Premier League soccer/football match, including shots, tackles, passes and fouls. In addition, players can be compared side by side. The necessary data is made available about 30 minutes after the match end.See also:

SAE 2010: Ford confirms Explorer, F-150 EcoBoost, ups production target to 1.5M
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Truck, Crossover, Ford

This Tuesday, Ford’s VP of global powertrain development, Barb Samardzich, will be addressing the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit, and Ecoboost technology will again be at the top of her agenda. Samardzich will confirm that before the end of this year three more Ecoboost engines will be in production at Ford, including the 1.6-liter inline-four due to be built at the Bridgend plant in Wales and debut in the new C-Max people mover.
At the Chicago Auto Show it was announced that the new 2.0-liter inline-four will go into the 2011 Edge and during Tuesday’s address Samardzich will also confirm that turbo’d four-pot will find its way into the new unibody Explorer as well. That installation should come as no surprise since just such a combination was listed as a powertrain for the Explorer America concept that debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show when Ecoboost was originally announced.
The final announcement (and one of the worst kept secrets in the industry) will be the confirmation that the 2011 F150 will be available with a 3.5-liter V6 Ecoboost. This will be the first rear-drive Ecoboost application, and brings the total number of announced Ecoboosted vehicles to eight (nine if you count C-Max and Grand C-Max). However, Ford is saying there will be 11 Ecoboost vehicles this year, with the Lincoln MKX one likely candidate for the 2.0-liter and the Mondeo may get one of the four cylinder units as well.
Samardzich will also announce that Ford has upped its Ecoboost production target from 1.3 million to 1.5 million by 2013 – not bad when you consider when Ecoboost was first announced Ford was targeting 750,000 units.

As Earnings Season Begins, Check Out The Sky-High Expectations For 2011
Q1 earnings are officially set to begin.
Things will get off to a slow start, but Alcoa (AA) is big, and that comes tomorrow afternoon.
For some perspective on the overall earnings challenge, here’s Mike O’Rourke of BTIG:
Although spring is not generally the season to be jolly, most investors are hoping it will be this year. Over the course of the next three weeks, 315 companies or 63% of the S&P 500 are expected to report earnings. Going into Q1 earnings season, the 2010 earnings estimates is $78.12, indicating that as of Friday’s close, the S&P 500 is trading 15.3x expected earnings. That is a very slight discount to the historic long term multiple of 15.9x. Current 2011 estimates are an aggressive $93.55.
How aggressive is that?
If the $78 number is achieved, S&P 500 earnings will need to grow 20% year over year to achieve the 2011 estimate. Even just 6 months ago, we would have been enthused to have the confidence to believe $78 for 2010 could be a done deal. Likewise, without even having Q1 2010 earnings in the books, 2011’s $93 are a long way away. To put these numbers in perspective, peak earnings were registered in 2006 at $87.72, followed by $82.54 in 2007 and $49.51 in 2008. Last year’s earnings were $56.86. As it stands now, 2010’s $78 is looking pretty good. The broad economy appears to be entering a sweet spot from a sentiment perspective which will likely provide enough momentum to keep the recovery on or ahead of schedule over the next 6 months.
20% over a snapback year would be pretty startling, and the idea of earnings surpassing 2007 is equally amazing.
We’ll come back to this subject a lot, we imagine, over the next several weeks (and of course the coming quarters). But we thought this was a nice taste of what the market is expecting right now.

The Weekend Is Over, And Euro Shorts Are Getting Taken For A Ride
No big surprise here. The euro is moving up sharply on news of the official not-quite-a-bailout of Greece.
Equity futures are also up, vindicating the traders who piled into stocks on Friday, pushing is briefly over 11,000.
The only question is: will shorts use this opportunity to load up and put more pressure on the ECB, or will they ease of for awhile.

Video: Hennessey Venom GT hits the track
Hennessey Venom GT on track – Click above to watch videoThe Hennessey Venom GT was out testing on track, and while the minute of footage tends toward the Zapruder end of ‘gotcha’ videos, there are still some pretty clear sights and sounds of the stretched and steroided Elise with the giant badonkadonk.
We’re going to guess this is the base, 725-horsepower version and what can be heard of it sounds pretty compelling. If nothing else, maybe this will help you dole out the $600K necessary to do some track time in one of your own. Follow the jump for the video. Hat tip to Mikespeed95

Report: Nissan still committed to full-size pickups

For all the success that Japanese automakers have had in the U.S. market over the past thirty years, there remains one very important segment they’ve never really managed to break through: full-size trucks. The big pickups from Ford and General Motors have remained at the top of the sales charts for decades. While Toyota has made a minor dent in the segment with the Tundra, Nissan’s Titan has just never really caught fire.
Despite that, Nissan still wants a piece of the pie. The potential profit margins and volumes continue to make this market too attractive to abandon. After a deal to share the Dodge Ram platform was abandoned during the runup to Chrysler’s bankruptcy, it was decided to keep the current Titan alive for the foreseeable future.
While Nissan has not announced what direction it will take with the next Titan, we’d expect it to share a lot with the recently-introduced NV2500 commercial van. The NV2500 is built in the same Canton, Mississippi plant with the Titan and has an architecture that’s more like a pickup than a traditional van, which could make it a suitable starting point. The NV chassis has already been designed for heavy duty applications, so it’s possible that it could finally spawn an HD pickup as well to compete with similar models from Detroit.

Fiat launches new Diesel edition 500C in Japan
Filed under: Convertible, Europe, Japan, Fiat, Diesel
Fiat 500C by Diesel – Click above for high-res imageOne of the major benefits that Fiat brought to the Chrysler table is its proficiency with diesels. This, however, is something else entirely. The latest in a series of special edition 500s created in conjunction with the Italian denimware label, the 500C by Diesel follows the fixed-roof versions and the one-off charity-benefit convertible unveiled nearly a year ago.
The special retro-cab is currently launching in Japan at Fiat’s own cafe before it goes on sale next month in its home market. When it does, the limited-edition 500C by Diesel will carry a price tag equivalent to about $24k, and come in one of three color combinations, including the dark indigo with tan top pictured above. The interior also gets denim-like upholstery with yellow top-stitching. Yellow brake calipers peer out from behind the 16″ alloys finished in dark satin like the rest of the muted brightwork. Check out the full details in the press release after the jump.

Engadget tries Festo’s next-gen racing chair
Filed under: Videos, Toys/Games
Festo AirMotion Ride – Click above to watch video after the jumpBlogger Richard Lai from sister-site Engadget recently had a chance to try out the amazing Festo AirMotion Ride driving simulator chair. Festo had the new device set up at The Gadget Show Live in the UK and Richard couldn’t resist giving it a spin. You can see a short video clip of that experience after the jump, but be forewarned, Lai asks ahead of time that no one judge his driving. We can’t resist a little playful mocking and advise Richard to not quit his day job.
Aside from the atrocious driving, you can see the extreme movement possible with Festo’s revolutionary “fluidic muscles.” That’s the name of Festo’s elastomer tubes that contract when filled with fluid, producing forces of up to 1,600 Nm (1,180 lb-ft). Better yet, there are no mechanical parts inside, making them simpler to replace than the typical hydraulic plungers found on competing simulators from D-Box, Simcraft, Force Dynamics and Motion-Sim.
Follow the jump to see Festo’s machine in action, and don’t judge Richard too harshly.

Yugos: Awful cars, serviceable art
The Yugofone and other interesting creations – Click above for image galleryRemember Jason Vuic’s book about the rise and fall of Yugo? Apparently, the inspiration for it came from the fact that an artist was able to buy 39 Yugos for $92 each. Those Yugos were given to students at The School of Visual Arts in New York and they were told to make something useful out of them.
And that’s how you get the Yugo accordion from the book, the Yogofone (pictured above), and a Yugo grand piano with a plate reading “89 KEYS.” This Yugobilia was displayed in New York’s Grand Central Station and on a U.S. tour – probably the best things to happen to any Yugo anywhere. Ever.
BMW probably doesn’t need to be worried about its art car franchise just yet, but the Bavarians might take some notes, just to be safe. Check out a few of the pieces in the gallery below, or click the link to check out another two dozen works of Yugo art.
