  • 7 Big Lessons From The Recent Rally

Rocket Propelled GrenadeLosses hurt more than the elation from similarly sized gains, so it’s no wonder that most of us drop into lessons-learned mode immediately after downdrafts. Shareholders demand to know what went wrong, why, and what their fund managers are changing–now!–to address the most recent cataclysm. Fair enough. That’s what happened at the end of 2008. But few of us do much soul-searching after a big rally like the one that started in March 2009.

“After the market meltdown of 2008, the most frequently asked question we received was, ‘What have you learned?’” wrote Mason Hawkins and Staley Cates of Longleaf Partners (LLPFX) in a recent shareholder letter. “Interestingly, we have not been asked about the ‘lessons of 2009.’ “

That’s too bad, because many of the same factors that lead to severe, near-term downturns, such as market overreactions to recent news, also power rebounds. Long-term investors shouldn’t upend their investment processes because of one year, good or bad. As Howard Marks of Oaktree Capital notes: “Investment performance in a single year should matter principally only to people who are going to liquidate their portfolios at the end of that year.”

The best investors may use vastly differing strategies, but they all share one trait: They regularly challenge their own assumptions and common doctrine. Great managers don’t completely overhaul their processes in an effort to win the previous battle. They stay true to their roots and make small, incremental adjustments that steadily enhance their processes. Some respected managers, such as bottom-up value managers John Rogers and Richard Pzena, are wary of predictions of a “new normal” and see parallels to past economic and market cycles, while others, such as hedge fund manager David Einhorn and more-thematic investors such as Janus Contrarian’s (JCNAX) David Decker, , contend that a degree of flexibility is warranted. “The range of possibilities for the next decade appears terribly wide,” Einhorn says.

Those who fail to learn from rallies as well as downdrafts risk being unprepared for whatever comes next.

Here’s 7 More Lessons We Learned From The Recent Rally >

    New Normal = Old Rationalization

    New Normal = Old Rationalization

Rogers has kept his Ariel (ARGFX) fully invested and still sees opportunity even after a nearly 95% one-year gain through April 5, 2010. He thinks 2009’s lesson is the same as 2008’s: Don’t put too much credence on the recent past or try to predict the future. “To us, the concept of a ‘new normal’ is another take on the often-stated ‘this time is different’ rationalization.”

    Think the Unthinkable

    Think the Unthinkable

Einhorn of Greenlight Capital believes adaptability is crucial. “In reflecting on how much has changed this last decade, we have come to realize that many things that appear unthinkable can easily occur within a 10-year time frame.”

    Early Innings

    Early Innings

Richard Pzena of JHancock Classic Value (PZFVX) sees parallels now to every prior cycle in which value stocks fell ahead of the recession and then came out stronger. “While market pundits are counseling ‘de-risking’ as their advice du jour, equities in general and value spreads in particular remain attractive despite the sharp runup of the last seven months. History suggests we are still in the early innings of this value cycle…”

    The Anomalous Decade

    The Anomalous Decade

Samuel Stewart, founder and president of Wasatch Advisors, is leery of blanket assumptions based on fixed time periods. The “lost decade” was an anomaly resulting from the ’90s bull market and two major shocks this decade–the 2001 terrorist attacks and the 2008 financial crisis, he says. “We continue to believe that equities will be rewarding long-term investments.” Similarly, Wally Weitz of Weitz Partners Value (WPVLX) says, “Historically, every time we have seen this type of ‘lost decade’ for stocks, the subsequent 10-year period has produced very strong equity returns.”

    Roll With the Changes

    Roll With the Changes

Janus Contrarian’s Decker views the world as constantly changing and tries to roll with it. “A year after witnessing a financial crisis so severe that it threatened to send the global economy spiraling into a severe recession (or possibly worse), we find ourselves facing a substantially improved and less chaotic situation. Last year the question was ‘How bad can this get?’ This year the question is ‘How long will the recovery take?’”

Harry Burn, John DeGulis, and T. Gibbs Kane Jr., the managers of Sound Shore (SSHFX), which finished both 2008 and 2009 ahead of its typical category peer and the S&P 500, recently commented that, “The markets of 2009 and 2008 reinforced our view on the futility of market-timing and top-down theme investing, and also re-proved to us that times of heightened uncertainty, properly used, can produce above-average returns.”

    Don’t Change Your Stripes

Aston/Montag & Caldwell Growth (MCGFX) manager Ron Canakaris, who favors high-quality growth stocks, says 2009 showed that momentum-fueled, speculative markets can go much further and faster than you think, but it’s a mistake to chase what’s been working. “You don’t want your clients holding the bag (when momentum reverses),” he says.

  • U-Haul tracking data suggests more families migrating to Kentucky, Vermont than other states

    Filed under:

If you’re moving out of state, one of the most popular ways to get your stuff to your new home is a U-Haul truck or trailer. This gives the rental company a unique perspective on where people are migrating to, and the company shares this information with the rest of us with its annual U-Haul National Migration Trend Report. The report for 2009 reflects 1 million one-way truck transactions across the country to show which states are gaining the most residences.

According to U-Haul, the state with at least 20,000 families moving that saw the most growth was, somewhat surprisingly, Kentucky. The Blue Grass State managed to bring in 5.76 percent more families than it lost in 2009. Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Illinois round out the top five.

Among the states with 5,000 to 20,000 moves, Vermont had the highest percentage of growth with 16.67 percent more families coming than going. Vermont took the top spot among states with fewer than 20,000 moves after two straight years of Maine at the top. Hit the jump to read over the U-Haul press release, which includes the top 10 move destinations among states with at least 20,000 relocations and the top eight among states with fewer than 20,000 interstate moves.

  • Now Wi-Lan Sues Everyone Over Bluetooth Patents

Remember Wi-Lan? The failed Canadian company reinvented itself as a patent nuisance, claiming that WiFi violated its patents, leading to it suing a bunch of companies all at once. That strategy seems to be working, so now its claiming that Bluetooth also violates Wi-Lan patents and has sued another 19 companies for infringement. The list includes Apple, Dell, Intel, HP and others. And, of course, the lawsuit was filed in East Texas — and Wi-Lan is claiming willful infringement, demanding treble damages. • Acclaimed Malian Performers to Rock Carleton College

Award-winning Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate and his band, Ngoni Ba, will perform in Carleton College’s Severance Great Hall on Tuesday, April 13 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. This not-to-be-missed performance is free and open to the public.

    Ngoni Ba

    Ngoni Ba

Ngoni Ba features four family members playing the ngoni, a West African instrument that was the forerunner of the American banjo. Ngoni Ba is currently wrapping up a tour of North America in the wake of the release of the group’s second album, “I Speak Fula” (Sub Pop, 2010). Their first album, “Segu Blue” (Out Here Records, 2007), received positive reviews around the world, and featured Kouyate’s wife singing vocals.

Kouyate was born into a family with a long history as traditional historians and musicians, and his father was also a talented musician. Kouyate developed a unique musical technique on the ngoni, and began to incorporate blues and banjo techniques into his music after his first visit to the United States in 1990. Upon his return to his native Mali, he participated in numerous successful musical projects, including a jazz-inspired trio and Toumani’s Symmetric Orchestra, which fused griot music and global pop, and worked with giants of African music such as Ali Farka Toure. It was during this period that he conceived the idea of creating a group combining ngonis of various sizes  – an idea which culminated in Ngoni Ba.

This event is sponsored by Carleton’s Humanities Center, African and African American Studies, the Committee for the Study of the Arts, and Special Projects. For further information and disability accommodations, please contact Cathy Yandell at [email protected] or (507) 222-4245.

  • New PBP Planar Chokes Series for DC/DC Converters.

PREMO presents its new PBP19 Series, a new inductors family designed for DC/DC converters and telecom power supplies up to 500W, where the height of the 19″ RAC system may be 0.25 U or 0.5 U, increasing power density and reducing telecom power systems sizes. The PBP19 series with 7.4 mm height is offered in Tape&Reel for SMT technology and allows a maximum surface of 92% of total area in contact with the heat dissipating interface, either a coolplate or traditional heatsink. The thermal optimization of components allows 10mJ energy storage with 2.8 microseconds cycles producing a lower dissipation of 2W and a high performance n> 95%.

The Telecom converters with soft-switching topologies (ZVS) allow increasing the switching frequencies from 250kHz up to 500kHz by using low Mosfet resistance. The DC resistance of the PBP19 series is typically 2mOhm, which perfectly fits in power semiconductors needs. This is achieved by implementing multilayer leadframe technology which eliminates round standard copper wire, skin effect and inefficiencies in the optimization of the winding window. The series allows configurations of 4 windings, with isolation against core above 500Vdc and overload saturation of 15% to 20% on the peak current.

PBP19 series is pin to pin compatible with other standard solutions, but eliminating the extra lateral pins, reducing 10% the PCB surface are and increasing the power density or reducing PCB costs.

  • The 2010 Census

I filled out my census and mailed it back the same day I received it. Mine had only questions about those living in my house and nothing about flushing toilets, etc. Though giving any information at all to this government does give me pause, asking who lives in my house is indeed Constitutional.

The amount of money that has been spent on this particular census disgusts me. I personally received a letter alerting me to the fact that the census would be arriving soon, then a day later I received the census, and then I got not one but two letters letting me know I had indeed received the census.

This colossal waste is part of the reason I am about to urge my fellow Conservatives/Libertarians to send yours back too. If you don’t they’ll send a census worker to your house SIX TIMES. And if after the six times they can’t get you, they’ll send someone out to ask your neighbor. And all this at $18 an hour.

“…The bureau is spending $133 million between January and May — or, more than $13 million for each of 10 questions, one of which reads: What is your telephone number? — to publicize the national head-count. Part of that effort is the Super Bowl ad, which Kendall Johnson, a spokeswoman for the bureau, confirmed Wednesday to FoxNews.com cost $2.5 million to air. The ad, produced by actor and director Christopher Guest, also will appear in other media, Johnson said…” (source)

And then there’s the second concern:

“Some Republicans are worried that an anti-government surge among conservatives will lead to lower participation in the U.S. census, which they fear could reduce the number of Republican seats in Congress and state legislatures.” (source)

  • Obama administration expects enough profits from GM, Chrysler to unwind stake

The U.S. government expects General Motors and Chrysler to generate enough profits for it to unwind its equity stakes in both companies, according to a new federal report by the General Accounting Office. However, if both companies unexpectedly fail, the government said that it will consider all options for shedding its stake, including liquidation.

The study done by GAO of the pension funds at GM and Chrysler, said that the U.S. Treasury needs to set clearer standards for measuring its investments in the auto industry to avoid conflicts of interest.

President Barack Obama has repeatedly said that he wants to sell the 60.1 percent stake and the 9.9 percent stake in Chrysler as soon as possible. The U.S. government has dumped $81 billion into rescuing GM, Chrysler, GMAC and suppliers.
