The strategic cooperation will be managed by Renault-Nissan B.V. for the Alliance and Daimler through a new cooperation committee giving representation to all parties. The cooperation committee will be co-chaired by Carlos Ghosn and Dieter Zetsche and steered by senior executives of the three companies.

Hit the jump for the press release for more details.

    Press Release:

Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler AG announce wide-ranging strategic cooperation

    – Cooperation on the next-generation smart fortwo and Renault Twingo, including electric versions, as well as on expanding the smart and Twingo families

    – Widespread powertrain sharing and co-development on future projects with applications across passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, specifically:

    – The sharing and co-development of diesel and gasoline engines from the Renault-Nissan Alliance; to be used in the new smart and Renault Twingo and to be adapted and modified with Mercedes-Benz characteristics for its new generation of premium compact cars
    – The sharing of gasoline and diesel engines coming from Daimler to Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan Motor Company, and providing the opportunity for further collaboration
    – The sharing of a Renault-Nissan Alliance diesel engine and transmission for the Mercedes-Benz Vito

    – Collaboration in the field of light commercial vehicles
    – One-time cross-shareholding amounting to 3.1% of each partner’s equity capital
    – Additional synergies encompassing selective common purchasing opportunities, exchange of operational benchmarks and best practices to be shared across both groups

BRUSSELS, Belgium – The Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler AG today announced a broad strategic cooperation that will enable both groups to already realize benefits quickly from a range of concrete projects as well as sharing of best practices. The two groups also announced an equity exchange that will give the Renault-Nissan Alliance a 3.1% stake in Daimler and Daimler a 3.1% in Renault and a 3.1% stake in Nissan.

According to Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars,“Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance are combining common interests to form a promising foundation for a successful, strategically sound cooperation that is based on a number of very concrete and attractive project cooperations. Our skills complement each other very well.Right away, we are strengthening our competitiveness in the small and compact car segment and are reducing our CO2 footprint – both on a long-term basis. We know that we can make brand-typical products based on shared architectures. The individual brand identities will remain unaffected.”

Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, said: “The Renault-Nissan Alliance knows how to work successfully in collaborative partnerships, and this experience is extremely valuable in today’s and even more tomorrow’s global auto industry. This agreement will extend our strategic collaboration and create lasting value for the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler as we work on broadening and strengthening our product offering, efficiently utilizing all available resources and developing the innovative technologies required in the coming decade.”

    Highlights of the Cooperation

Following intensive and productive talks, specific projects have been agreed upon and will be implemented with immediate effect. Specifically:

New common architecture for small vehicles

The successor to the current smart fortwo, a new smart four-seater and the next-generation Renault Twingo will be engineered on the basis of a jointly developed architecture. All vehicles will clearly differ from each other in terms of product design. One main characteristic of the new architecture will be the unique rear wheel drive concept used by current smart vehicles.

The launches of the jointly developed models are planned for 2013 onwards. The smart plant in Hambach, France will be the production location for the two-seater versions, while the Renault plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia will be the production location for the four-seater versions.Right from its market launch, the jointly developed future models will also be available with an electric drive.

    Powertrains

The focus of the cooperation in the powertrain area is on the sharing of highly fuel-efficient, diesel and gasoline engines between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Daimler.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance will provide 3 and 4 cylinder gasoline and diesel engines out of its portfolio to Daimler, which will then be adapted and modified to reflect Mercedes’ characteristics. The result is a win-win situation for both sides: Daimler will be able to utilize Renault-Nissan Alliance engines and capture additional sales potential for Mercedes-Benz’ future lineup of premium compact cars, while the Renault-Nissan Alliance will improve its capacity utilization.

Daimler will provide gasoline and diesel engines out of its current portfolio to Infiniti. This includes 4 and 6 cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The result is a win-win situation for both sides: Infiniti will be able to utilize Daimler engines, while Daimler will improve its capacity utilization.

Daimler, Renault and Nissan will also cooperate on future gasoline and diesel engines. Final production decisions for newly, co-developed engines will be taken at a later time, seeking a production network that is well balanced, thus benefiting all sides.

The area of engine cooperation will be driven by a technical concept that ensures the preservation and clear distinctiveness of the individual respective brand and product identities, while at the same time providing a highly competitive cost structure.First,a high level of standardization of the non-brand-relevant components will provide substantial savings for both partners. Second, the use of separate, brand-specific technology packages will ensure that the requirements of the respective brands are met.

Akey objective is to increase competitiveness of all partners through a substantial increase in volumes, leading to economies of scale and cost sharing in development.

    Collaboration on light commercial vehicles

The companies have also agreed on a close cooperation in the light commercial vehicle segment.Mercedes-Benz Vans will expand its portfolio to offer an all-new entry-level, intended for commercial usage, from 2012 onwards. The technical basis of this van will come from Renault and will be produced at the Renault plant in Maubeuge, France. Both partners will benefit from higher unit sales, better capacity utilization, shared investment burden, resulting in a better overall cost basis.

In addition to cooperating on small commercial vehicles, selected powertrain components will also be shared to enlarge mid-size van product offering and sales volumes. This includes a small diesel engine and transmissions which Daimler will procure from Renault-Nissan for its mid-size van, the Mercedes-Benz Vito. This additional entry-level motorization will generate additional unit sales for Mercedes-Benz and optimized capacity utilization at Renault.

    Equity Exchanges

This strategic cooperation is underscored through a one-time cross-shareholding structure which enables the three companies to exchange, benchmark and create synergies on the basis of a long-term mutually beneficial relationship. The overall construction of the deal is based on the principle of a 3.1/3.1/3.1 percentage cross-holding between Renault, Nissan and Daimler; it will be transacted through an exchange of shares:

    – Daimler will get 3.1% of Renault’s newly issued shares;
    – Daimler will get from Renault 3.1% of Nissan existing shares;
    – Renault will get 3.1% of Daimler shares
    – Renault has independently agreed to exchange 1.55% of Daimler with Nissan for 2% of Nissan shares;
    – Renault and Nissan will each hold 1.55 % of Daimler treasury shares.

    Further opportunities for collaboration

It is the intention of both groups to create a long-term framework to work closely on future areas of cooperation between Renault, Nissan and Daimler. Each company will pursue future opportunities following the closing of the agreement on the strategic cooperation and the implementation of the first major cooperation projects. These include opportunities to be studied on shared modules and components between Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz vehicles, regional cooperation in the United States, China and Japan between Nissan, Infiniti and Daimler. In addition, opportunities to co-develop technologies relating to electric vehicles and batteries will be explored between Renault, Nissan and Daimler.

  • Judicial Blow to the FCC and Net Neutrality

We needed some good news: “…A federal court threw the future of Internet regulations into doubt Tuesday with a far-reaching decision that went against the Federal Communications Commission and could even hamper the government’s plans to expand broadband access in the United States.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that the FCC lacks authority to require broadband providers to give equal treatment to all Internet traffic flowing over their networks. That was a big victory for Comcast Corp., the nation’s largest cable company, which had challenged the FCC’s authority to impose such “network neutrality” obligations on broadband providers.

Tuesday’s unanimous ruling by the three-judge panel was a setback for the FCC because it questioned the agency’s authority to regulate broadband. That could cause problems beyond the FCC’s effort to adopt official net neutrality regulations. It also has serious implications for the ambitious national broadband-expansion plan released by the FCC last month…” (source)

The group behind the push for net neutrality (or, the online version of the Fairness Doctrine) is headed up by a man named Robert McChesney. A man that said these things just last year:

“Any serious effort to reform the media system would have to necessarily be part of a revolutionary program to overthrow the capitalist system itself.”

“There is no real answer but to remove brick by brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles.”

“We need to do whatever we can to limit capitalist propaganda, regulate it, minimalize it and perhaps even eliminate it.”

    Read through his thought process.

Of course when you Google “Net Neutrality myths”, Google gives you the ACLU “debunking” those myths at the top spot, then the aforementioned Robert McChesney’s group Free Press (kinda’ve a conflict of interest, eh?)…but thankfully for those that decide to do a bit of research and not rely on the purposefully misleading name (much like the “Fairness Doctrine”)…they do offer one decent page.

  • Another Lawsuit Over Costume Copyrights: Gorilla Holding A Cage

Following our recent story about copyright on Mardis Gras costumes, it seems that now we’re hearing more and more about costume copyrights. THREsq points us to the news of a lawsuit involving the maker of those “gorilla holding a cage” Halloween costumes (pdf) claiming that a competing gorilla-holding-cage costume maker was violating its copyrights:

While there may be arguments over the copyrightability of the costume itself, notice that the lawsuit takes this even further, and throws in the claim of copyright inducement in asking retailers to sell the costume, with the argument being that the maker of the costume is now “inducing” the retailers to infringe.

  • A New And Effective Climate Model by Stephen Wilde: LLB (Hons.), Solicitor, Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society

    Article Tags: Stephen Wilde

    article image

The problem with existing climate models:

Even those who aver that man’s activity affects climate on a global scale rather than just locally or regionally appear to accept that the existing climate models are incomplete. It is a given that the existing models do not fully incorporate data or mechanisms involving cloudiness or global albedo (reflectivity) variations or variations in the speed of the hydrological cycle and that the variability in the temperatures of the ocean surfaces and the overall ocean energy content are barely understood and wholly inadequately quantified in the infant attempts at coupled ocean/atmosphere models. Furthermore the effect of variability in solar activity on climate is barely understood and similarly unquantified.

As they stand at present the models assume a generally static global energy budget with relatively little internal system variability so that measurable changes in the various input and output components can only occur from external forcing agents such as changes in the CO2 content of the air caused by human emissions or perhaps temporary after effects from volcanic eruptions, meteorite strikes or significant changes in solar power output.

If such simple models are to have any practical utility it is necessary to demonstrate that some predictive skill is a demonstrable outcome of the models. Unfortunately it is apparent that there is no predictive skill whatever despite huge advances in processing power and the application of millions or even billions of man hours from reputable and experienced scientists over many decades.

  • A moment of clarity: Turnbull to quit politics by Phillip Coorey, Sydney Morning Herald

Article Tags: A Moment Of Clarity

Former federal opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull has announced he will quit parliament.

“I have announced I will not recontest Wentworth at the election this year,” he said today.

Mr Turnbull has been considering his future since Tony Abbott beat him by one vote in a leadership ballot in December.

He lost his leadership because he supported an emissions trading scheme to tackle climate change. Mr Abbott, who also once supported such an approach, dumped it as Liberal policy in his first act as leader.

In a statement released this morning, Mr Turnbull rued that decision.

“I thank [former prime minister] John Howard for giving me the opportunity to serve as environment and water minister. With his support I was able to ensure that for the first time in our history the interstate waters of the Murray Darling Basin were placed under national responsibility,” he said.

“However, I regret that another important reform begun during that time, the establishment of an emissions trading scheme, is no longer Liberal Party policy.”

  • New Double Brake Design for Commercial Elevators

As an added measure of safety, many countries are now requiring that passenger elevators have double redundant braking systems. Last fall, Japan made it mandatory that all new elevators have a double brake and double detection system. In order to meet the requirements in Japan, Europe and other countries, Ogura has developed the double MNB brake for commercial elevators.
The double brake is basically just that. It is two identical brakes mounted on one adaptor flange. Since the brakes are holding only, when the brakes are required to come on, both brakes operate at the same time, but in case of a problem with one of the brakes, the other one is designed to still have the capability to handle the torque load required. Both brakes are equipped with limit switches, to know when the brake is either engaged or disengaged. Besides the brake models shown Ogura also makes other series of hoist and elevator brakes.
Ogura has been producing clutches and brakes since 1938. Over that time, we have developed over 5,000 different models of clutches and brakes. Although Ogura primarily produces electromagnetic clutches and brakes, we also produce magnet particle, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and a variety of specialty products. Ogura is the world’s largest manufacturer of electromagnetic clutches and brakes. Current manufacturing capacity is over 30 million units per year. To provide localized support, we have fourteen manufacturing plants spread throughout the world in Asia, The Americas, and Europe. All manufacturing facilities are ISO recognized and conform to the ISO 9001;2008, ISO 140001, and ISO/TS 16949.

  • SFC Smart Fuel Cell and Evergreen Energy Technologies Inc.:

Partnership to further clean fuel cell power for oil and gas industry in Canada

Brunnthal/Munich, Germany, and Calgary, AB, Canada, March 31, 2010 – SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, technology and market leader for mobile and off-grid power solutions based on fuel cells, and Evergreen Energy Technologies Inc., a start-up company in Calgary, Canada, announce their further partnership to market clean fuel cell energy for the oil and gas industry in Canada.

With the innovation and strength of the two companies a reliable and environmentally friendly fuel cell stand-alone power solution for remote monitoring and service of oil and gas well sites has been created. The “Power Pod System”, developed by Evergreen Energy Technologies, is a completely new and eco-friendly approach which is used to replace pneumatic devices at well sites. For reliable autonomous operation, the system is powered by a hybrid combination of SFC’s EFOY Pro fuel cell and solar. This innovative solution powered by the EFOY Pro fuel cell just received a funding award of $50.000 under the “Alberta Innovation Voucher Pilot Program” by the Government of Alberta, that funds projects with environmentally friendly and energy efficient technologies in Western Canada.

So far, equipment used to monitor and service well sites and pipelines uses thermoelectric generators, diesel generators, the pneumatic power of venting propane or natural gas coming from the well, or solar power. Drawbacks to each of these systems are cost of fuels, cost and logistics of refuelling, effects of harsh weather conditions, and high greenhouse gas emissions. Powered by the EFOY Pro fuel cell the “Power Pod” generates reliable power for an electronically controlled solenoid injection pump, as well as other equipment. The system easily retrofits on existing well sites and provides automatic site electrical power, in extreme weather conditions with significant economic, environmental, and safety benefits. The cost and environmental advantages are enormous compared to regular pneumatic devices at well-sites, with typical 2.5 year breakeven, and 60% IRR (after tax) and increasing safety due to reduced combustible and toxic gas emissions at the production site. In this application, GHG emissions reductions of over 99% are achieved which corresponds to 170 tonnes CO2 per year per pump.
