  • A great question to keep asking yourself: “Who do I need to become to get all which I want in my life?”

    ask yourself

You know how Frank Sinatra sang DO BE DO BE DO? He was a great crooner – but a dyslexic self help guru. To achieve all you want in your life, it’s important to put the emphasis on BE DO BE DO BE DO.

You must figure out who you want TO BE — because your identity is the ultimate chooser of your habits and actions.

    For example:

If you view yourself as an organized person, you will choose the neatness habits of an organized person.

If you view yourself as a thin person, you will choose the eating and exercise habits of a thin person.

If you view yourself as a successful, positive person, you will choose the habits of a successful, positive person — even in the face of adversity and challenges!

    YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Here’s a great question to ask yourself when you wake up in the morning: “Who do I need to become to get all which I want in my life?”

Ask yourself this question, then write your TO BE LIST – before you write your TO DO LIST!

For example, do you need to be more PATIENT, more COMMUNICATIVE, more EMPATHIC, more ORGANIZED, more DIRECT?

Put these TO BE words on a list, and really think about them!

Work out your problems BACKWARDS! Ask yourself what “TO BE” quality do you need TO BE more of to get yourself out of the mess you are in.

For example, if you’re having a work problem, do you need to more CONFIDENT, more DISCIPLINED, more INNOVATIVE, more OPEN-MINDED? Put it on your TO BE LIST and think about these TO BE words all through your day.

Your TO DO LIST will go so much more productively when you write your TO BE LIST first!

For example, if you have an important phonecall to make — and you look at your TO BE LIST and see PATIENT, DIRECT, EMPATHIC, COMMUNICATIVE – your phonecall will be energized to a higher level by your conscious awareness of your BEING these qualities!

  • Reminder: Make an appointment with your legislator TODAY!

    Until April 12,

Illinois legislators are in their home district offices and they need to see and hear you. Never has it been more important for our members to be involved. We are asking you to participate in Back Home Lobby Days from March 26-April 12. Call your legislators’ home offices, schedule appointments to meet with them and have a talk about what is happening in the state and what you’d like to see them do.

It’s easy to look up your legislators’ contact information.  Go to our “Contact Your Legislators” page, then scroll down to the “My Elected Official” section and fill in your address. Your lawmakers’ names will appear. Click on your lawmakers and you can see information about them, including how to contact them. Call their home office and make an appointment sometime between now and April 12.

What do you talk to them about?

Our lobbying message now turns to encouraging lawmakers to support increased revenues in order to Save Our Schools, Save Our State. There are expected to be at least 17,000 education-related layoffs in Illinois. We need increased revenue to prevent this from happening.

These are the points we’d like you to address when talking with your legislators:

    • Now is the time to demand that the General Assembly take action to pass a bill that substantially increases funding for public education, K-12 and higher education institutions.
    • We need a significant revenue increase now! A 1 percent income tax surcharge is not enough; nothing short of HB 174 or its equivalent is what is required. This can be a difficult sell, but there are effective ways to make this argument, see our Back Home Lobby Days Helpful Tips.

There are five parts to our lobbying script:

    1. OUR STORIES:  Local stories that focus on RIFs and program cuts that will destroy quality education in Illinois classrooms. Nothing is better than real-life examples of how the state’s failure to take charge of education funding is affecting students and their constituents.
    2. NO EXCUSES! For those who voted “yes” (Senate votes on the bill, House votes on the bill) on two-tier, they have no excuse not to support the much needed revenue. They have the reform they wanted and now we need new revenue to prevent the harmful cuts that will have a devastating impact on public education. If your lawmaker voted “no” on the bill, or “present,” you might want to thank them in person for their support.
    3. LAWMAKERS’ CHOICE:  We believe lawmakers have a stark choice in front of them now – support the Governor’s budget proposal which represents $1.3 billion in cuts to education and the loss of nearly 20,000 jobs or approve a revenue increase this spring – November will be too late for our students.
    4. OUR SOLUTION: We call on you (lawmaker) to demand of your leaders an opportunity to vote yes for new revenues arising from HB 174 or its equivalent before adjourning this spring legislative session.
    5. ENCOURAGE THEM: Ask legislators if they will you say “yes” to our schools, our school employees, and our state?

  • Scammers Using Mock Copyright Lawsuit Threats To Get People To Download Malware

With companies like Digiprotect, Davenport Lyons and ACS:Law busy sending out tens of thousands of so-called pre-settlement letters that threaten people (often on very little evidence, if any) of copyright infringement, but allow them to pay up to avoid a lawsuit, is it any surprise that out-and-out scammers are jumping into the game as well? Ben alerts us to a warning from US-CERT of a new email scam, which involves the scammers sending out legitimate looking emails pretending to be from a law firm, telling the recipients they’re being sued for copyright infringement. The details are supposedly in a file at a URL provided in the email. When a visitor goes to that URL and downloads the file, they get malware instead. Yes, it appears that the malware scammers are now learning from the best in the business…

  • Suzuki kills plans for V6, hybrid Kizashi sedan

Suzuki had previously planned to offer two alternate versions of its new Kizashi sedan, a hybrid and a V6. Those plans were scrapped however, due to GM’s sale of their stake in Suzuki; the technology for these vehicles was to be borrowed from GM.

Click here to get a price quote on the 2010 Suzuki Kizashi.

The move is a costly blow to Suzuki as a company that doesn’t offer a mid-size sedan in either a hybrid or V6 version. One option to consider is Volkswagen’s alternative-fuel engine technology, but that would be too expensive. Suzuki has dispatched a team of engineers to Germany to see what can be done as far as alternative technologies.

“We are looking at VW’s cost structure and their offerings,” said Steve Younan, director of product planning at American Suzuki Motor Corp. “We want to keep our cars reachable to mere mortals.”

Volkswagen recently purchased a 19.9 percent stake in Suzuki.

  • Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder’s Family Fights Back

“He was a hero and he was the love of my life.” – Albert Snyder, Matthew’s Father

“…The family of Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, US Marine Corps, has begun this civil lawsuit* against Mr. Phelps and certain members of the so-called Westboro Baptist Church to bring an end to the reign of terror and abuse that they inflicted upon the grieving families of US service members killed in defense of our nation. Using innocent children to deliver their twisted message of hatred and fear, the defendants in this suit have sought to attack the memory of our departed heroes, to strip their loved ones of their dignity, and to use abuse and intimidation as a tool for preventing surviving family members from reaching closure over their loss.

It is the sincere hope of Mr. Al Snyder, Matthew’s father, that this suit will spark similar legal actions against Mr. Phelps wherever he seeks to inflict harm upon the memory of our heroes and their families. If you feel strongly that such actions should be stopped, please consider a donation to help offset the legal expenses of bringing this suit…” (source)

I am assuming this is the reason a court has ordered Matthew’s father, Albert Snyder, to pay $16,000 in legal fees to Fred Phelps(D) and his Westboro Baptist “Church.” Not that even one of the three articles I read gave any background to the story… So we’ll surmise Snyder brought the suit claiming carrying “God Hates Fags” signs outside of the funerals of soldiers and Marines that were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq exceeds the boundaries of free speech. I think we’ll also have to guess that he lost the suit and has to cover the defendant’s legal costs.

“I don’t think I’m going to be writing a check until I hear from the Supreme Court,” Snyder told Fox News on Tuesday. “I’m not about to pay them anything.”

The two-page decision supplied by attorneys for Albert Snyder of York, Pa., offered no details on how the court came to its decision.

On Friday, Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps. Phelps is the leader of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder’s funeral in 2006.

Attorneys also said Snyder is struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.

The decision adds “insult to injury,” said Sean Summers, one of Snyder’s lawyers. (source)

Though I do believe the First Amendment gives Phelps and his crew have the right to hold their disgusting signs… If this poor man, that has already lost his 20 year old son to OIF, has to pay that vile Fred Phelps one cent…ugh, it’s too horrible to even consider isn’t it?

  • Clues to long-lost pyramid found

    Discovery News (Rossella Lorenzi)

The missing pyramid of an obscure pharaoh that ruled Egypt 4,300 years ago could lie at the intersection of a series of invisible lines in South Saqqara, according to new astronomical and topographical research.

Connecting the funerary complexes raised by the kings of the 6th Dynasty between 2322 B.C. and 2151 B.C., these lines would have governed the sacred space of the Saqqara area, in accordance with a number of criteria such as dynastic lineage, religion and astronomical alignment.

“We are talking of meridian and diagonal alignments, with pyramids raised at their intersections. The only missing piece in this sort of grid is the pyramid of Userkare,” Giulio Magli, professor of archaeoastronomy at Milan’s Polytechnic University, told Discovery News. His research will appear in the next issue of the journal Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry.

  • False portal discovered in Luxor

    Discovery News (Rossella Lorenzi)

With photo. Unfortunately not big enough to see the hieroglyphs.

An Egyptian excavation team has unearthed a 3,500-year-old door to the afterlife from the tomb of a high-ranking Egyptian official near Karnak temple in Luxor, Egypt’s Culture Minister Farouk Hosni announced on Monday.

Engraved with religious texts, the six-foot-tall red granite door belonged to the tomb of User, the chief minister of Queen Hatshepsut, the long-ruling 15th century B.C. queen from the New Kingdom.

The door, known as a false door, was meant to be a threshold that allowed the deceased and his wife to interact with the world of the living.

This “interaction” was not eternal for User. More than 1,000 years after his death, during the Roman period, the massive false door was removed from the tomb and used in the wall of a Roman structure.

The uncle of the well-known Rekhmire, who was King Tuthmosis III’s chief minister, User was a powerful man.

    Yahoo! News

Archaeologists have unearthed a 3,500-year-old door to the afterlife from the tomb of a high-ranking Egyptian official near Karnak temple in Luxor, the Egyptian antiquities authority said Monday.

These recessed niches found in nearly all ancient Egyptian tombs were meant to take the spirits of the dead to and from the afterworld. The nearly six-foot- tall (1.75 meters) slab of pink granite was covered with religious texts.

The door came from the tomb of User, the chief minister of Queen Hatshepsut, a powerful, long ruling 15th century B.C. queen from the New Kingdom with a famous mortuary temple near Luxor in southern Egypt.

User held the position of vizier for 20 years, also acquiring the titles of prince and mayor of the city, according to the inscriptions. He may have inherited his position from his father.

  • The Garrett, Watts Report (March 31, 2010)

    garrettwatts

To Our Clients, Colleagues and Friends,

    • We have a client looking for someone to run their rate lock desk.  This is a great company located in the heart of Beverly Hills , and we’re impressed with their management and their business model.  Please  send resumes to Joe Garrett ([email protected]). This is a great job for the right person.
    • We got some good captions for this photo, and the best ones were: (1) from Mike Olden up in Seattle .  He had Geithner thinking “Why did I let him talk me into taking all those damn Big East teams in my bracket?” And (2) from Susan King “How did I ever  get mixed up in this disaster?”
      j5
Our caption for what the President is thinking: “If things don’t work out, I’ll just blame it all on the guy on my right.”
    • TARP dividend payments to the government were due February 15, and it looks like about 75 institutions missed their quarterly payments.  Not good.  Saigon National Bank in the L.A. area has now missed all five payments. In fact, once you miss six of them, the guy on the left in the photo gets to appoint two people to your Board.
    • We’ve now successfully assisted nine banks in getting into the Warehouse Lending business.  What’s so gratifying is that with banks having a hard time finding good loans to make, these WH lines generate a good yield with very good collateral.  And yes, WH lending is really asset-based lending, but you typically have very strong mortgage banking companies guaranteeing the lines. Almost all mortgage companies made tons of money last year, and most are flush with cash.
    • And a special note of congratulations to Joe Adams, Steve Haynes and Erin Burr at First Security Bank up near Seattle .  Of all the banks we helped set up Warehouse Lending operations, First Security made it happen quicker than anyone. They called us all the time the first 3-4 weeks, and we liked it.  It meant they not only wanted to get it up and running quickly, but more importantly, that they didn’t want to miss anything, however minute. Way to go, Steve, Joe and Erin and the rest of your team.
    • If Erin Burr ever wants to get out of commercial banking and warehouse lending, we‘d love to see her go back to graduate school in American history.  Wouldn’t it be cool if she taught early American history, with a specialty in the life and times of Aaron Burr? And what if a rival college had a professor of early American history named Alex Hamilton, as in Alexander Hamilton?  Can’t you just see the two them having a debate? Erin Burr v. Alexander Hamilton. Just like the old days.
    • Does anyone remember actor Bud Cort, who played the young fellow in the 1970 cult classic Harold and Maude?  Today he turns 62.  We never quite got it, but it was one of those movies where people would tell you they’d seen it 15 times and that it was the most brilliant movie ever made.
      j4
    • Speaking of movies, don’t be in too big a rush to see Crazy Heart. Jeff Bridges won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in this movie, but the full range of his “acting” was acting like a drunken slob the first 110 minutes and then, post-rehab, acting like a sober slob for the last 5 minutes. The role he played didn’t give the slightest hint as to why Maggie Gyllenhaal was so attracted to him.  A better actor could have given a hint at what she might have seen in him, but there was none of that.  He would have clearly deserved an Oscar if they had one for Best Actor Playing a Drunk, but they didn’t have that category this year.
      j3
    • Some of you have wondered about buying a bank, and in answer to some questions we’ve gotten, yes, a bank can be an S-Corp.  In fact, whenever we see a small bank with a really high ROA, it almost always turns out to be an S-Corp., since they don’t pay taxes.  While we’re on the topic, we think that 99% of mortgage bankers don’t have the temperament it takes to own a bank, but if you’re in that 1%, it could make sense.  The piece we’ve attached gives some good reasons to do so, along with a concise description of who regulates which types of banks.
    • One big reason to own a bank is the lower cost of funds.  Take last year’s income statement and adjust it to show that your cost of funds was 2.0% instead of whatever you paid on your warehouse line. Assuming you did $500 million last year and that your WH lines were at 5%, that 3% differential would have earned you a whole lot of money.  And that’s not counting the fees. Go ahead and do the math.  This is a really simplistic example and doesn’t consider all sorts of other issues, but you get the point.
    • Here’s good place to see what banks have received enforcement actions from their regulator.   One of these days, instead of publishing a list of banks with regulatory orders, maybe it will be easier to simply publish a list of banks without them. It would be a shorter list.
    • Remember Washington State QB Ryan Leaf?  Leaf averaged 330 passing yards per game in his junior year, was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, and was #2 in the NFL draft. His pro career went nowhere, and he had a truly horrible career passing rating of 50.1 in his 25 games. His career and his life spun out of control, and last week this one-time can’t-miss pleaded guilty to drug and burglary charges. Sad.
    • We saw too many companies the past year which back up their data on servers located in the same building as the company headquarters. People, it should be backed up at a site at least 50 miles away.  If you don’t understand, just think of the World Trade Towers on 9/11. Back up at a far away site.
    • On this day in history, March 30, 1981, Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt by a nut who thought he’d impress Jodie Foster.  Reagan was shot less than three months into his Presidency, and it was his good humor about being shot that helped the American public decide that they really liked him. Just as the surgeons got started, he turned to them with a big smile and said, “Boys, I hope you’re all Republicans.”
After four years of double-digit inflation and high unemployment, plus the humiliation in Iran ,  the new President seemed larger than life and filled with humor and optimism. His first post-hospital appearance before Congress displayed a bi-partisan good feeling that hasn’t been seen since.
      j2
    • From a Wall Street Journal editorial: “There’s still no indication it has occurred to the Administration that less exuberant free-handedness over the past five years might have built the basis for sounder, more sustainable economic growth.” Hard to really disagree with this, right?  Well, we opened an old book and found an editorial from the WSJ, and this is from that editorial. The date?  September 12, 1966.  The administration they were criticizing was Kennedy-Johnson, and the five years were 1961, when Kennedy was inaugurated, through 1966 when Johnson was President.  As the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.  La plus ca change, la plus c’est la meme chose.

    • Have you noticed the subtle changes in the Wall Street Journal lately?  There was a time when the only graphics were those black & white little-dot pictures, and now they have photographs, some of which are in actual color. We’ve wondered if this is maybe Rupert Murdoch’s way of gradually making the paper more like the tabloids he publishes.  Just when we were about to dismiss this ridiculous notion, there was a front page article last week on, get this, Johnny Depp’s fingernails!  Next we know, the Journal will have columns written by Lady Gaga, and weekly features called Madonna on Mortgages and Beyonce on Bonds.
    • Most people think of bounced checks as irritating, but not all that big a thing. Bankers know they’re a huge thing, as banks collected about $37 billion in fees on bounced checks last year. At our last bank, we had a restaurant account that generated $18-19,000 every year in Not Sufficient Funds fees. His business was doing poorly, but he covered every single check.  We were really sorry when his place finally went bust.
    • Build or buy? If you want to start an FHA program, it can take awhile to find a good DE underwriter, do your test cases, and complete everything else.  Why not find a small mortgage banker who’s tired of all the licensing issues, not to mention re-purchases, and have him join you in some capacity, possibly as a net branch, maybe a division, or possibly in some other capacity. If you structure it right, you can be up and running almost overnight.
    • If you never had the chance to see Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos in person, now you can.  Here’s a photo of his embalmed body where it’s kept in a temperature-controlled mausoleum.
      j1
What if we had done that with President Nixon, or all our Presidents for that matter?  They could keep them all in one huge room at the Smithsonian Museum .
    • Oakland A’s pitcher Catfish Hunter gave up two home runs in the 1974 World Series, and when asked about them, he responded “I had some friends here from North Carolina who’d never seen a homer, so I gave ‘em a couple.” This future Hall of Famer was the main stud on the Oakland team that won five straight pennants and three straight World Series. Catfish died way too young, from Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
    • What profit margin are you (a)  building into your loans?  How does that compare to (b) what you’re actually realizing?  We know you know the answer to (a). We also know that most of you don’t know the answer to (b).  Figuring this out and doing something to bring those two numbers together just might be the one most important thing you can do to improve profitability.

The head of U.S. operations for Toyota, Jim Lentz, said that the company is making headway as far as repairs are concerned, but rebuilding the brand’s image will be a grueling process.

“I think it’s a matter of time,” Lentz said. “They’re going to come back. I can’t tell you when. It’s not going to be weeks. It’s going to be measured in months, hopefully not years.”

While it is widely agreed that Toyota will eventually move past its recall problems, many warn that they will not enjoy the steady growth they once did. Even with the 35% jump in sales forecast by Lentz, Toyota will not likely regain their 2009 market share. The company had 17% of the U.S. market in 2009, but saw a sharp decline during the first two months of 2010.

NASA was able to put a man on the moon, but the space agency can’t tell you what the temperature was when it did. By its own admission, NASA’s temperature records are in even worse shape than the besmirched Climate-gate data.

E-mail messages obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request reveal that NASA concluded that its own climate findings were inferior to those maintained by both the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) — the scandalized source of the leaked Climate-gate e-mails — and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Climatic Data Center.

  • Craemer ECOmax – the first plastic half pallet for sustainable logistics

Craemer is reacting to the demands made by trade and industry for the development of a load carrier which offers higher levels of sustainability, functionality and longevity than the ‘Dusseldorfer’ and, at the same time, enables universal usage across the entire supply chain, with an innovative half pallet concept. Produced under the name of ECOmax, Craemer presents the first plastic half pallet which stands for sustainability and added value in pallet logistics.

ECOmax – the alternative to the ‘Dusseldorfer’
With ECOmax, Craemer provides an alternative to wooden half-pallets which do not always meet high professional standards and can create additional costs. There are not only economic reasons that cause trade and industry to increasingly look for alternatives to the ‘Dusseldorfer’ pallet. In an age of diminishing raw materials and the demand to reduce CO2 output the need has grown for an alternative that offers greater durability and functionality. More sustainability and added value in the supply chain are the central themes.
With the new ECOmax plastic pallets, Craemer has developed a new generation of load carriers which can do more than just replace the conventional ‘Dusseldorfer’. In so doing, Craemer is breaking new ground in production, e.g. through the careful use of resources and the controlled use of recyclable materials. The manufacturer is also investing in the research and development of new materials and production techniques.

High levels of longevity, functionality and process reliability across the entire supply chain
As the ‘Dusseldorfer’ often reaches its limits in modern conveyor systems, the ECOmax is the first series of half pallets that not only guarantees a high turnover rate and as a result, a longer useful life, but also enables universal application throughout the entire supply chain. The high handling capacity of the range is achieved through the additional strengthening of the runner material. The entry width to 573 mm provides optimal conditions for handling the pallets with industrial trucks. Moreover, the automatic roller / chain conveyor system-usable ECOmax measuring 800 x 600 x 160 mm feature a high level of process reliability, resilience and shape retention. Non-slip stoppers ensures transportation safety when conveyed by fork-lift truck. In addition, the patented ‘Lego structure’ facilitates the safe stacking of empty pallets.

  • Marchionne: Chrysler on track to break even in 2010

Sergio Marchionne had made a commitment to break even in 2010, and that promise will be kept. When asked if Chrysler will turn a profit this year, he was unsure, but said that the company is still on track break even. He also advised that we ill not be seeing Chrysler engaged in any kind of incentive war, as has been the deal with Toyota and other companies that have followed suit.

Marchionne predicts industry sales in excess of 11 million units for 2010, and said that Chrysler ended ’09 with $5 billion in the bank. Chrysler is to provide a financial update on April 21 in Italy, as part of a Fiat event.

The Italian CEO is also touting the much-awaited Jeep Grand Cherokee, which will start being produced in May and is to showcase the latest and greatest in Chrysler’s vehicle technology. So far 86 former Chrysler dealers have been reinstated, and the company plans to invest $500 million in its dealer network over the next five years.
