  • And… Here Come The iPad Patent Claims

Back when Steve Jobs launched the iPhone, one of the points he made clear in his presentation was how Apple had applied for over 200 patents on the device. And, yet, despite all of that, Apple has been sued over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. And, of course, only recently did Apple file a patent lawsuit in the other direction.

Given all of this, it was really only a matter of time until the patent litigation began flying over the iPad. Slashdot points us to the news that Elan Microelectronics is seeking to ban the import of iPads into the US via the ever-popular ITC loophole. Amusingly, the whole point of the ITC injunction process is supposed to be to protect American companies against foreign companies importing in patented technology. Yet, in this case, it’s a Taiwanese company suing an American company. This seems like a pure money grab, like many of the iPhone patent lawsuits, and once again demonstrates the problems of the patent thicket around mobile devices these days.

The patent in question 5,825,352 is for multi-touch screen inputs, and was apparently originally held by Logitech. Of course, in many ways this really highlights the points we’ve talked about. What Apple did with the iPhone was quite innovative, but wasn’t really that inventive. It took concepts that had been out for a while, including multi-touch, and did something really cool with it: putting it into a compact, mobile device that people really wanted. The other players in the space weren’t working on anything like that at all, and now patent battles are simply a waste of time holding back more innovation, rather than letting companies actually continue to come up with the next great thing.

  • Report: Mahindra may look to freeze joint venture with Renault

In India, the Dacia Logan is sold as the Mahindra Logan, manufactured as part of a joint venture between Mahindra and Renault. Observers suggest, though, that because the Mahindra Logan isn’t selling well, the Indian company will wind down its involvement in the joint venture. If Mahinda does take a giant step back, it is doubtful that Renault would just walk away from the Indian Logan, which is said to be priced a little too high because of a tariff on its length.

Last month Renault India confirmed that the partnership was being restructured, but haven’t yet indicated where things will go. The apparent option is Mahindra decreasing its equity stake by not investing any further, although another form of equity restructuring might also be in play.

  • 2010 New York: Chevrolet Cruze Eco gets 40 mpg highway without going hybrid

    • Key Competitors: Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, Mazda3, Volkswagen Jetta.
    • Power: 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged 4-cylinder engine – 138-hp / 148 lb-ft of torque.
    • Transmission: 6-speed manual.
    • Fuel-economy: Official figures not confirmed. Estimated 40 mpg highway.
    • Availability: 4th quarter of 2010.
    • Pricing: TBA.

Yes, we’re kicking off live coverage of the 2010 New York Auto Show a little earlier than scheduled – so let’s get right to it. While the 1.4L Ecotec turbocharged 4-cylinder engine will be available on the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze LT and LTZ, the Cruze Eco will be the only model in the lineup capable of achieving an estimated 40 mpg on the highway. And that’s mainly because GM focused a lot of its attention on modifying the Cruze Eco with fuel-saving touches.

Some of the modifications added include.

    • a lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow
    • upper grille with more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics
    • lower front air dam extension, extensive use of underbody panels and a rear spoiler enhance aerodynamics
    • lowered ride height
    • 17-inch lightweight aluminum wheels
    • ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires.

Also, the 6-speed manual plays a large part in helping the Cruze Eco achieve that 40 mpg highway rating. Unlike a conventional 6-speed manual the 6th gear in the Cruze is meant only for when you’re cruising along the highway – otherwise think of the Cruze Eco as a 5-speed manual (at least that’s what GM wants you to think). To make sure you know that the 6th gear is for cruising only, it is highlight in green on the shit knob.

GM says that the Cruze Eco delivers hybrid-like efficiency without the price tag – but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s true.

  • 2011 Nissan Juke details, specs spilled ahead of New York intro *Updated w/video

2011 Nissan Juke – Click above for high-res image gallery

Nissan‘s new-for-2011 Juke is set to make its North American debut at tomorrow’s New York Auto Show, and the small crossover’s polarizing moon-buggy styling is sure to set tongues wagging, just as it did during its global premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. Having seen this vehicle in person already, we can tell you that its “Baby Predator” front end takes some getting used to, but it all comes together better than expected, and the interior seems surprisingly roomy and well-resolved.

Much smaller in person than one might think, the curvy ute is significantly shorter than vehicles like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 – it’s even shorter than the new Hyundai Tucson and Nissan’s own Rogue, not to mention the likes of Mitsubishi’s Outlander Sport (itself another NY debut). The closest competitor we can think of is Suzuki’s SX4 crossover, which is, believe it or not, actually longer than the Juke. In the end, we fully expect it to be cross-shopped with more conventional hatchbacks (Mazda3), as well as ‘box cars’ like the Kia Soul.

Featuring the first application of Nissan’s 1.6-liter direct injected four-cylinder turbo in North America, it will be available with torque vectoring all-wheel drive, so it might just be the driver’s car of the bunch, too. Featuring “180+ horsepower and 170+ lb-ft of torque,” it will be available in both six-speed manual form and CVT with a sport setting. Unfortunately, the three-pedal setup will only be available in front-drive SV and SL trim, however. That torque-vectoring system? It defaults to a 50:50 front-to-rear split, but it can push power from side-to-side along the rear axle when situations warrant.

No official pricing has been revealed yet, but Nissan promises that the Juke will start at “just under $20,000.” Want to learn more? Check out our high-res gallery below and the official press releases and spec sheet after the jump.

    Update:
Three videos of the Juke, its torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system and Nissan’s new direct-injected 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (definitely the one to watch) have been added after the jump.

  • Google Sued For Using The Term ‘Gadgets’; Tiny Company Afraid People Will Think They Support Google

Ah, more trademark insanity. Eric Goldman points us to the news that Google has been sued, yet again, this time over a trademark infringement claim, with a company called Firefly Digital that makes some sort of content management system that it trademarked as “Website Gadget.” As you may know, Google’s iGoogle customized page lets you add various “gadgets.” In fact, many of you read Techdirt via just such a gadget. But apparently, Firefly is very upset that when you see Google’s gadgets, you’ll automatically assume that they were built by Firefly — and thus, the company is suing:

My favorite line in the filing?

Google has thereby induced purchasers and others to believe–contrary to fact–that
Firefly has provided, sponsored, authorized, licensed or approved Google’s business, goods, and
services, or that such business, goods and services are in some way connected with Firefly.

I’d love to see the evidence that any user of iGoogle got confused and somehow thought that the gadgets were provided, sponsored, authorized, licensed or approved by Firefly. Later in the lawsuit, Firefly claims that Google’s intention is to “deceive” users into believing there was a connection with Firefly. Somehow, I doubt it.

  • Methods to determine 6 RoHS-restricted substances

Metrohm presents new applications and instrumentation for the wet-chemical determination of trace concentrations of six RoHS-restricted substances in a wide variety of materials including metals, electrotechnical components, plastics and wires.

After sample preparation according to IEC 62321, the metals lead, cadmium and mercury are straightforwardly determined by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The flame retardants PBB and PBDE are quantified by direct-injection ion chromatography (IC) using spectrophotometric detection. Chromium(VI) can be sensitively determined either by adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdSV) or IC. Trace halides in non-aqueous sample matrices are best determined using combustion IC. Detailed information on the applications and the respective instrumentation can be found on a poster recently published by Metrohm.

  • Bestact – Hermetically Sealed Power Contact

The basic principle of operation is identical, but the structure is completely different. In conventional reed switches, the current flow path is common with the magnetic flow path. Bestact uses a dual contact structure, consisting of an electrical circuit section and a magnetic circuit section. This unique structure characterizes excellent performance and reliability in Bestact.

Bestact’s good DC breaking performance comes from glow discharge. DC inductive loads are normally braoken by a long time of arc discharge. This means they normally require contact capacity sufficient to withstand the resulting heat, and a gap between the contacts to remove the arc. Bestact, however, breaks inductive loads while reducing current in the region of the glow discharge.
Consequently Besatct swtiches produce little heat and very low contact damage. A comparison of Bestact and conventional large plug-in relays for DC breaking performance showcases the difference. Bestact has better DC breaking performance than mechanical power relays.

  • V-Cone Flow Meter from McCrometer

V-Cone Flow Meter Proves Itself As Easy-To-Use, Economical Solution For Oil/Gas Applications

With thousands of units installed worldwide during the past 20 years, McCrometer’s V-Cone® Flow Meter has proven itself in a wide range of installations from the most challenging offshore oil/gas applications to refining and chemical plants, providing superior flow measurement, exceptional reliability, low cost installation, virtually no maintenance and long life.

Oil/gas process engineers will find the V-Cone Flow Meter provides a low-installed and low life-cycle cost solution to measuring liquids, gas or steam. It complies with the industry’s most stringent performance standards through superior engineering, materials and workmanship to the highest quality levels.

The process of selecting and sizing a V-Cone is as simple as reviewing a Configuration Sheet and utilizing McCrometer’s advanced V-Cone Sizing Software, which is the industry’s most exacting program. With the help of the company’s highly trained oil/gas industry application experts, the entire selection process takes only minutes for most standard oil/gas applications. With its highly flexible design, a wide range of custom V-Cone configurations is also available.

The V-Cone Flow Meter operates over a wide flow range of 10:1 with low head loss and supports line sizes from 0.5 to greater than 120 inches. Accuracy is +0.5%, with a repeatability of +0.1%. A comprehensive suite of testing is available to meet individual user requirements, including pressure, non-destructive testing (NDT) and calibration. The testing of the V-Cone conforms to the American Petroleum Institute’s API 22.2 Testing Protocol for differential pressure flow measurement devices.

The self-conditioning V-Cone Flow Meter is well suited for easy installation in all applications and is ideal where installation conditions are crowded, such as offshore platforms. It requires a pipe straight-run that is up to 70-percent less than other meters, resulting in significant real estate and installation cost savings that can actually exceed the cost of the instrument itself.

The V-Cone Flow Meter’s no-moving parts design provides built-in flow conditioning, which almost eliminates the upstream/downstream straight pipe runs required by nearly all flow meter technologies. Typical flow meter installations may require 10 to more than 40 straight pipe diameters upstream from the meter and 5 or more straight pipe diameters downstream to eliminate the effects of swirl and other pipeline disturbances caused by valves or elbows that negatively affect accuracy.

In comparison to traditional DP instruments such as orifice plates and venturi tubes, the V-Cone Flow Meter’s design is inherently more accurate because the flow conditioning function is built into the basic instrument. The V-Cone conditions fluid flow to provide a stable flow profile that increases accuracy. It features a centrally-located cone inside a tube. The cone interacts with the fluid flow and reshapes the velocity profile to create a lower pressure region immediately downstream.

The pressure difference, which is exhibited between the static line pressure and the low pressure created downstream of the cone, is measured via two pressure sensing taps. One tap is placed slightly upstream of the cone and the other is located in the downstream face of the cone itself. The pressure difference is then incorporated into a derivation of the Bernoulli equation to determine the volumetric fluid flow rate.
