  • Hollywood Seeks To Kill Off 3D Golden Goose With Much Higher Prices

Ah, Hollywood. While the movie business has been doing quite well at the box office lately, many in the industry still haven’t quite realized why. Obviously the rise of 3D flicks has given people a reason to actually leave the home and go to the theater — in part because the experience is much better, and seeing movies in the theater is a social experience. Of course, now that 3D televisions are starting to come to market, there may start to be some more challenges there, and the way to deal with that is to improve the experience and make it even more worthwhile.

So what’s Hollywood doing? They’re just making it more expensive. Yes, they’re jacking up the prices on 3D movies, in a typical short-term strategy. Rather than recognize how this might just drive more people to more seriously consider getting a 3D setup at home, Hollywood’s simplistic business modeling seems to be “let’s see how much we can squeeze out of people as quickly as possible.” There is no recognition of the value of building up a longer term relationship and providing reasonable value at a reasonable price. And then they’re going to complain about people not going to the movies, and blaming file sharing, rather than recognizing that they’re driving willing customers away with much higher prices.

  • W PhoneWatch Future Windows Phone Accessories… My Idea

The world of mobile technology has never been more… lets just say, mobile. Things are becoming smaller, processors are getting slimmer, memory cards are getting thinner, and so it seems about right that the technology that runs on them becomes smaller.

W Phone is a bit of a weird device. A watch phone that comes with a multi function controller that pretty much does everything a phone is suppose to do, but in your pocket, ear, anywhere.

That got me thinking, what would be a cool new technology that took advantage of this? What I have come up with is something a little new, and somewhat special.

I would like to see a wallet that is electronic, watch that has a HD projector, and my favorite idea, a dog tag chain that syncs with my future HD2. A dog tag chain for the HD2 would be the best accessory that HTC should make for the device. My ideal device would be a dog tag, a little similar to the Jabra dog tag, but thinner and displays the devices status and all. The best part of this could be the Wifi sync system that uses the new wifi router feature of the HD2.

I can say, that is not the best idea of an ideal hardware for a Windows Phone. If you have a better idea of an accessories that should be in the market, then comment below.

  • A new waste wood processing plant will be build together with Vecoplan

Baetsen is establishing a new scrape wood processing plant in Son, a suburb of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, for the processing of 200,000 tons of waste wood per year. This corresponds to a performance of approx. 50 t/h for 250 working days at a rate of 16 hours per day.

For this new plant, Vecoplan will deliver almost all the machine technology necessary to process the waste wood. most of the completed end product will be used in chip board production.

For this reason, Baetsen has attached great importance to the quality of the completed product and has, therefore, incorporated a non-ferrous separation and an additional extraction for light fractions into the plant concept.

Besides the reusable ferrous and non-ferrous fractions, a total of three main fractions will be manufactured. The largest fraction, approx. 80%, will be manufactured for the chip board production. About 10% of the material flow will be used as fuel with a grain of
< 35 mm, while the remaining 10 % is dust, < 5 mm. At this plant, Vecoplan can take credit for the overall planning, procedure development together with the end customer, delivering the whole machine technology (except for ferrous and non-ferrous separation elements), installation and commissioning. In particular, the support during the approval procedure for the plant and the cooperation with building companies were the key points in completing the order and managing this project. Vecoplan will not only deliver the machine technology, but also the complete electrotechnology that will guarantee the fully automated operation of the plant.

  • Sonobond to Exhibit Three Ultrasonic Bonding Machines at IDEA 10 Show in Miami

WEST CHESTER, Pennsylvania, March 3, 2010–Sonobond Ultrasonics announced today that it will be exhibiting three of its ultrasonic bonding machines at the IDEA 10 Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center, April 27-29. In making the announcement, Sonobond’s Vice President, Melissa Alleman said, “We are very excited to be participating in the International Engineered Fabrics Conference and Expo. Sonobond is a leading provider of reliable, environmentally-friendly machinery for a wide variety of nonwoven applications. We are looking forward to demonstrating how our equipment provides the fast, cost-effective bonding so essential to manufacturers of filters, medical disposables, and similar products. Sonobond will have three of its bonding machines — plus a video of our filter bag machine — on display. In addition, we will have samples of filters and feminine hygiene products assembled with our units. We invite those coming to Miami for IDEA 10 to visit us at Booth #2208.
According to Vice President Alleman, one of the Sonobond units on display at IDEA 10 will be the SeamMaster™ High Profile Bonder. This unit is similar in appearance and operation to traditional sewing machines. However, it uses no thread, glue, or other consumables. The machine is ideal for applications involving bulky materials, hand-guided operations with tight tolerances, and for working around curves. That’s because it features a large pattern wheel and a high clearance above the bench. The unit also has production speeds that are up to four times faster than sewing machines and up to ten times faster than adhesive machines.
The SeamMaster™ High Profile Bonder is especially useful for the production of medical disposables — such as gowns, face masks, and mattress covers — because it helps manufacturers satisfy OSHA regulations for barrier seams. The SeamMaster™ can also be installed with a special fixture for sewing pleated filters. The unit is available as a stand-alone model or as a modular unit for easy integration into the production process.
The SureWeld™ Ultrasonic PlungeBonder™ is the second of the three Sonobond units that will be exhibited at IDEA 10. This powerful and versatile machine seals large, multiple-layer or difficult-to-bond materials. It can accommodate different thicknesses and multiple layers of materials in just one hit. This unit confidently seals box-style filters and filter bag ends.

  • New digital signal converter MUP 400

The advantages of potentiometric travel and angle measurement are well known to its users for long times: good accuracy, very high resolution and reproducability, long life time and especially the easy and uncomplicated utilisation. This allows even not unstudied service staff to conduct a functional analysis using a simple Multimeter.

However, during the connection of a potentiometer, certain things have to be observed, if the potentiometer shall take maximum use of ist unique properties:
On the one hand, the potentiometer shall be supplied with a constant voltage, on the other hand, the signal pickup has to be very high ohmic. Apart from the availability of high ohmic signal inputs, such small signals generally are liable to be disturbed if the signal path is across longer lengthes. Additionally, it happens quite often that the actual length or angle of the transducer is much larger than the travel or angle actually used in the application.

To disburden the user from the potential necessitiy of purchasing extra hardware for this, Novotechnik already offers signal conditioners that exactly do the jobs described above: generally, uncomplicated connection of a potentiometer and the possibility to redefine the output slope in order to adopt it to the actual travel or angle.

To perform the redefinition of the output slope much easier as before, Novotechnik has developed a new signal conditioning unit that – by usage of state of the art components – strongly eases the Teach-In of a nominal slope.

The 2-points Teach-In of the nominal slope is done easliy by using 2 Buttons to teach the respective set point. The Teach-In can be inhibited by a switch to avoid erratic overwriting of teached data. Additionally, the device incorporates both voltage and current output, user selectable by another switch.

Conclusion: The new MUP400 is in conjunction with a potentiometer ideally suited for measurement tasks where a standard interface is needed and easy installation is desired and high accuracy at a reasoable system cost has to be fulfilled.

  • Renesas announces a new 32bit RX MCU with enhanced timer and analog functions

RX62T group underlines Renesas’ contribution to further miniaturization and lower costs in high-level motor and inverter control systems, increasing efficiency and reducing noise.

Nuremberg, embedded world 2nd March 2010 – At Embedded World in Nuremberg, Renesas Technology Europe today announced the release of the new RX62T, the third family of products in its broad RX Platform series of MCUs. The RX Platform is built around the new RX CPU and comprises the next generation of MCUs which integrate the functions of Renesas Technology’s existing 16-bit and 32-bit MCU products. The new RX62T Group comprises 40 individual products. In addition to the high speed, high performance, and low power of the 32-bit RX600 Series, the new RX62T group features improved inverter control timers and analog functions required for today‘s inverter control applications.
Furthermore, these microcontrollers help to reduce system costs and power consumption in various applications, such as air conditioners, washing machines, solar inverter solutions, lighting control and PFCs. These typically require increasing levels of functionality and environmental friendliness.
The RX62T microcontrollers include a multifunction timer pulse unit 3 (MTU3), which can drive up to two 3-phase motors. They also integrate a newly-developed 16-bit general-purpose PWM timer (GPT) that can drive a single three-phase motor. As a result, the RX62T products can drive up to three 3-phase motors at the same time with a single chip. The timer uses the same clock at 100 MHz, which is the CPU’s maximum operating frequency. This enables it to achieve a wide range of width measurements for PWM output waveforms with a 10 ns resolution.
Improved analog functions for system cost reductions and improved ease of use in motor vector control applications have also been implemented in the new RX62T family. It features two 12-bit A/D converter units and one 10-bit A/D converter unit, and can capture analog input values from up to 20 channels at a minimum conversion time of 1 ms.
The two 12-bit A/D converters can easily be used for sensorless vector control methods, like three-shunt or single-shunt current detection. As each of the A/D units can be triggered by timer units and sample three phases in parallel, an independent motor control for two separate motors can be applied.

  • Compact steam heaters for field instrumentation

Intertec has developed a new range of steam heaters for field instrumentation protection applications. Offering a choice of vertical, horizontal or panel mounting styles, with four power outputs ranging from around 65 to 490 W, users can easily select the appropriate heater for all common enclosure-scale freeze/condensation protection or temperature maintenance applications.

The new STEAM range has been developed from the most popular sizes of finned convection heater profiles in Intertec’s electrical heater range. These Intertec-designed anodized aluminium profiles have all been field-proven in enclosure heating applications over many years, and in many tens of thousands of applications.

Steam heating is still employed in many refineries and other plants, because steam energy is produced as a byproduct of the core process, and because it is a simple alternative to electric heating.

Two of the options in Intertec’s new steam heater range are designed to mount vertically to provide convection heating. They are physically compact and suitable for smaller-scale heating requirements: in freeze protection applications the outputs are typically 65 and 130 W respectively when used on typical lines offering steam at a pressure of three bar and a temperature of 130 degrees C. A third convection option is designed to mount horizontally and provides a typical output of 490 W. The fourth element has both flat and finned sides to allow it to be mounted against a panel or on the side of equipment; it delivers around 200 W of combined convection and conduction heating output, providing a useful design alternative for some process applications. The sizes of the four heaters are 5 x 5 x 15.5 cm, 8 x 8 x 22.5 cm, 22.5 x 21.3 x 10 cm, and 5 x 21.3 x 22.5 cm.
