  • Mummy Hermione among revelatory treasures at Girton College Museum

    Culture24

Rarely-seen treasures from Anglo-Saxon England, Ancient Egypt and the Mediterranean are being opened up to public view following the refurbishment of the small museum of Girton College Cambridge.

The Lawrence Room at Girton contains a range of unique pieces including Anglo-Saxon treasures recovered on the college site in 1881 and, perhaps most importantly, Hermione Grammatike, a named portrait mummy of a young female classics teacher from the Fayum city of Roman-era Egypt.

Excavated by William Flinders Petrie during the winter season of 1910/1911 in the Roman cemetery at Hawara, on the eastern edge of the Fayum, Hermione has become something of a Girton icon.

  • The Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus

Thanks to the Resource Shelf blog for the information that the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus is now available online at the Turning the Pages Online website, from where you can load the virtual papyrus, or you can link to it directly by clicking here (it takes quite a while for the page to load). This is a terrific way of looking at the original papyrus. The Eye of Ra that shows under the papyrus allows you to zoom in on any part of it.

The Edwin Smith Papyrus, the world’s oldest surviving surgical text, was written in Egyptian hieratic script around the 17th century BCE, but probably based on material from a thousand years earlier. The papyrus is a textbook on trauma surgery, and describes anatomical observations and the examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of numerous injuries in exquisite detail.

American archaeologist Edwin Smith discovered the papyrus in Egypt in the 1860s, and his daughter donated the papyrus to the New-York Historical Society after his death. It eventually made its way to the Library of the New York Academy of Medicine, and it was recently translated for the first time in over 50 years into English by James P. Allen of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

  • Groundbreaking Partnership Unites Decades of Research

    New York Times

MOST people associate museums with art and artifacts, not research libraries. But many of New York’s most prestigious museums have extensive collections of books and papers. Four of them — the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Frick Collection — have combined forces to share resources, save money and make their holdings more accessible to the public.

Together these institutions make up the New York Art Resources Consortium, an integrated library system formed in 2007 that is supported by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Its Web site, nyarc.org, just went on line in February. Last year, three of the museums united their collections in one catalog, called Arcade (the Met has kept its catalog separate).

“This allows us to do some things collaboratively that we weren’t able to do individually,” said Milan R. Hughston, the chief of library and museum archives at MoMA. “Together we aggregate close to a million books, articles, periodicals and special collections that document art history.”

The database, at arcade.nyarc.org, is a trove of more than 800,000 records from ancient Egypt to contemporary art that includes exhibition and auction sale catalogs, monographs, periodicals, rare books, photographs and archival materials.

Investigating the likelihood of a reservoir offset in the radiocarbon record for ancient Egypt
    M.W. Dee, F. Brock, S.A. Harris, C. Bronk Ramsey, A.J. Shortland, T.F.G. Higham, J.M. Rowland

    Abstract
Some radiocarbon dates for ancient Egypt have been significantly offset from the established historical chronology (see Bonani et al., 2001). In this paper, short-lived plant species collected in Egypt between 1700 and 1900 AD were used to investigate the possibility that the radiocarbon record had been influenced by reservoir effects. AMS radiocarbon measurements were made on 66 known-age samples, resulting in an average offset from expected values of 19 years. The implications of this minor discrepancy on the likelihood of a reservoir process are discussed, and the agreement of the data with recent models of radiocarbon seasonality is also considered.

  • Nu suport – partea a-II-a

    b) Are cativa prieteni in masina si vrea sa le demonstreze cat de sofer este el !

Cam cata incredere poti sa ai in asa ceva ?
    Deci Pisi,daca ai prieten, vezi-ti de el ! Radem,glumim,vorbim, dar atat !
Daca nu esti multumita de prietenul tau, trimite-l la plimbare !

    Trimite si prietenilor:

  • A response from a climate change skeptic by David Davidovics, Canada.com

    Article Tags: Reply To Article

In response to Ray Grigg’s article “A Message for Climate Skeptics“, I felt some feedback from a self described climate skeptic might be in order.

Ray, you correctly point out that the IPCC is finally admitting mistakes in their 2007 report. But for you to state that the Himalaya glaciers could melt a mere 100 years later than predicted is not very scientific since there is no basis for any rate of melting that can be considered reliable at this point. That’s why the IPCC has set up an independent inquiry to find out how such poor science made it into the peer reviewed literature. There were other mistakes. Articles from Green Peace and the World Wildlife Fund also were referenced in the report, perhaps this could explain the advocacy that the IPCC became known for? These are not impartial organizations and do not produce credible scientific papers. Mistakes as obvious as how much of the Netherlands is below sea level also found their way into the “peer reviewed” report. The report stated 55 per cent is below sea level, in fact the correct number is less than half at 25 per cent.

You incorrectly claim that skeptics say that there has been no climate change. That is not a credible position even among skeptics. What we object to is the certainty that humans are somehow in control of changes in the climate and that any climate change that we cause will be negative or rapid. Changes we are seeing are not rapid and if record snowfall across the northern hemisphere for this winter doesn’t count as climate, then neither should record heat waves in 2005 or an unusually low arctic sea ice extent in 2007. Climate changes. It always changes. Nothing will change that.

  • Language of Religious Fervor Inflames Climate Change Debate by Jeremy Lovell of ClimateWire.net

    Article Tags: Newspaper Article

LONDON — Apocalyptic visions and the muscular language of religious fervor are invading the climate arena, replacing issues of fact with those of faith and bringing high emotion into science — an area where it should have no place — politicians and religious leaders complain.

People who say human-induced climate change is a fact that demands urgent action are described as “believers” or “climate evangelists,” while those who reject the concept are “deniers,” “skeptics” or “atheists.” Those in the middle who say they are unconvinced either way are “agnostics.”

“The use of this language has become increasingly an issue,” said Colin Challen, chairman of the United Kingdom’s All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group, a committee of U.K. lawmakers studying the global climate phenomenon.

“Some people would like that to happen, because in some eyes proving that climate change is man-made becomes as difficult as proving the existence of God,” he told E&E.

  • Environmentalists Are Killing Environmentalism by Dr. Tim Ball, CanadaFreePress.com

Doctrine of Certainty, The basic not-to-be-questioned assertions

Aesop (620-564 BC) the Greek writer famous for his fables told of the boy who falsely cried wolf. Environmentalists have falsely cried wolf and effectively undermine environmentalism the need to live within the confines of a finite planet. They misled, exaggerated and made a multitude of false predictions to the detriment of the environment and people’s willingness to be aware and concerned. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was a major starting point that blamed DDT for many things including thinner eggshells none of which proved correct

Indeed, as Paul Driessen identified in Eco-imperialism: Green Power, Black Death, banning DDT led to millions of unnecessary deaths from malaria that exceed deaths from AIDS in Africa.

A myriad of false stories made headlines over the last 40 years. All are conditional that is they’re prefaced by words like, ‘could’ and ‘maybe’, but the public generally remembers the terse and unconditional headlines. Ultimately almost all the stories were subsequently proved incorrect, but that never makes the headlines. Remember such stories as sheep and rabbits going blind in Chile because of thinning ozone.

  • Letter: Time to rethink climate regulations by Ken Cuccinelli, Attorney general of Virginia

Article Tags: Ken Cuccinelli, Reply To Article

Although USA TODAY’s article “Is the global warming movement cooling?” recognizes some of the growing evidence against man-made global warming, it overlooks a central point (Cover story, News, March 11).

Every proposal to regulate and reduce greenhouse emissions would destroy jobs and weaken national wealth formation. Before “Climategate,” we were told that it was necessary to make these sacrifices to avert even greater loss.

Now, not only have the methods and objectivity of the global-warming careerists been seriously questioned, but also the predictions used to justify the expense of climate mitigation actions have largely fallen by the wayside. The original proponents of the claims now admit that there is no scientific evidence that the Himalayan glaciers will melt by 2035. But this is not a minor, isolated error. What should also be noted is that there is no scientific proof that the seas are rising due to warming, or that African agriculture will collapse by 2020, or that the Amazon rainforest will soon be destroyed — all predictions that have formed the central narrative for climate action. Furthermore, professor Phil Jones, the man at the heart of the scandal, admits that there has been no statistically significant warming for 15 years.

Any official or organization arguing that the science underlying the claims of man-made global warming should not be seriously and comprehensively reassessed before imposing regulations with such enormous consequences for the standard of living of every American is acting irresponsibly.

  • Irish Collection Society Wants Hotels To Pay Performance Fees For Music Played In Guest Rooms

We’ve seen all sorts of ridiculous claims by performance rights collection societies trying to demand performance rights for things that clearly were not intended as “performances.” There was the woman stocking shelves in a store who was singing without paying. There was the owner of a horse stable who played music to her horses. There was the attempt to say that your mobile phone ringing with a ringtone was a public performance. Basically, they’re willing to claim just about any music playing is a public performance that requires yet another fee.

Niall.e points us to a legal issue in Europe, where the Irish High Court has asked the European Court of Justice to weigh in on a claim by the Irish collection society Phonographic Performance Ireland Ltd (PPI), which is claiming that music played in hotel rooms for guests requires a performance fee. Yes, you read that right. PPI is claiming that since the hotel provides radios and televisions in the guest rooms, they need to pay a performance right fee on the usage of those devices.

PPI can’t honestly believe this is a public performance that deserves a performance right. This is just a blatant money grab to try to force someone else to pay up. What’s next? Auto dealers will have to pay a performance fee for having radios installed in cars?

  • Hot News Is Back: Court Blocks Website From Reporting The News

In the last few years, there’s been a push by some companies to bring back the immensely troubling “hot news doctrine,” that appears to violate everything we know about the First Amendment and copyright law. Basically, the “hot news doctrine” says that if someone reports on a story, others are not allowed to report on their reporting for some period of time — on the theory that it somehow undermines the incentive to do that original reporting. Last year, we wrote about the very troubling implications of allowing the hot news concept to stand. Beyond the free speech implications, it also has the troubling quality of effectively creating a copyright on facts — which are quite clearly not covered by copyright. On top of that, it’s not necessary in the slightest. As anyone who is actually in the online news business knows, getting a scoop gets you traffic — even if others report the same thing minutes later. Being first gets you the attention. You don’t need to artificially block others from reporting the news.

Unfortunately, with various publications struggling, some have picked up on the hot news doctrine as a way to somehow block competition. Tragically, it looks like a court has now adopted the hot news doctrine in one case. Paul Alan Levy alerts us to the news that a judge issuing an injunction against TheFlyOnTheWall.com, a website that would publish summaries of Wall Street research. The Wall Street firms said this undermined their business model — and the court agreed. It passed an injunction saying that TheFlyOnTheWall had to hold off publishing any news about any Wall Street research report until either 10am (if the report is released early in the morning) or for two hours after it’s released if it comes out during the day.

These totally arbitrary restrictions are highly troubling from a free speech standpoint and seem effectively random. This seems like yet another case of a company being upset by interference with its business model, which should be a reason to change the business model — not run to the courts.

But what’s most troubling of all is that now all the publishers who have been salivating over the hot news doctrine have a legal ruling to point to. Can you imagine how the world would work if you couldn’t blog about or mention a particular piece of news for a few hours because the Associated Press got to it first? It’s hard to see how this could possibly stand up to a First Amendment analysis, and it’s quite troubling that the judge found the way she did.

  • Would UK Politicians Support The Digital Economy Bill If It Applied To Offline Activities As Well?

The entertainment industry always likes to take the digital world and compare it to the physical world as if the two were the same — often making claims like unauthorized downloading is “just like stealing a CD from a store.” However, they don’t seem to like it when you do that back to them to prove all the inconsistencies in their arguments. Lee Griffin wrote up a good blog post about the Digital Economy Bill in the UK, wondering how people would feel if the same rules were applied offline:

Would you appreciate being put under house arrest not because of any court determined guilt, but because of someone making accusations of copyright infringement against you for something that may or may not have occurred in your property at the time? Is it even remotely justified to put you under house arrest, to stop you from going to the library, to work, or to socialise with your friends because of those accusations alone?

Or how about point 4…how would you feel if the police were stopping you from accessing your local community centre because a single individual or organisation had threatened the local council in such a way that it is too much for the council to risk the financial cost of allowng it to continue functioning for the community? Imagine arriving at your local pub only to find it inaccessible to you, even though anyone that is visiting from another town can use it freely; not for anything that you or your town have necessarily done, but because of the implications made by an individual in a completely unscrutinised manner?

Finally, point 5 would be very interesting. Could you imagine the police coming and turfing you out of a building you’ve legitimately bought, and putting it back on the market without paying you a penny, simply because you knew it was in a good location and could make some money off of the future sale? Somehow I don’t think that’s all too likely!

Of course, supporters of the DEB will claim that “this is different!” but they seem to be the same people who will still insist that infringement is no different than theft. Funny how that works.
