  • a new pallet truck built to handle the toughest working conditions

Crown launches a new pallet truck built to handle the toughest working conditions

Pallet trucks are used for loading and unloading goods vehicles, and for picking and transporting goods in warehouses. Sounds easy? It’s not. These activities can place enormous strain on drivers and vehicles. The new WT 3000 Series, designed and built by Crown, has all the qualities a vehicle needs to work day in, day out in punishing conditions: ultra-tough design, unique durability, outstanding ergonomics.

Crown’s engineers set themselves ambitious targets. The new truck was to be designed in such a way as to provide the best possible support for operators working under such tough conditions. There was only one way to make sure the WT 3000 really lived up to users’ expectations. During the entire development process, the Crown team worked in close collaboration with customers, carrying out intensive research on customers’ premises which enabled the engineers to analyse working conditions in the warehouse and on the loading dock. Even during the final development phase, feedback from customers made a significant contribution. Using the onsite information, the team was able to further develop and refine the ergonomic and electronic details that have made such a difference to the truck’s productivity, durability and user-friendliness.

    Tough construction for extended uptime
By analysing the results of their onsite research, the team identified exactly which truck components are subjected to the highest stresses. As a result, the truck’s heavy-duty side restraints are attached to the vehicle by a super-rugged mounting. Shocks that would otherwise cause the chassis and frame to judder are absorbed by guide casters mounted on lifetime torsion springs. The optimised suspension also extends caster life. Inside the WT 3000, carefully designed components all help to minimise running costs over the life of the vehicle. By radically reducing shaking and vibration, the smoothly efficient suspension system – combined with Crown’s revolutionary zero-maintenance e-Gen™ braking system – cuts service levels, minimises downtime for repairs, and keeps trucks running for longer.

A comfortable operator is a productive operator
Every day, truck operators have to work in conditions that restrict workflow and reduce productivity. Bracing for heavy impacts caused by driving over dock ramps; manoeuvring heavy loads down narrow aisles; keeping their footing on vibrating operator platforms – these are the challenges that confront operators working with conventional pallet trucks. The WT 3000 is designed to overcome them all. Crown’s patented FlexRide™ system reduces vibration by up to 80%. The floating suspension system reduces operator fatigue and obviates knee and back pain. Best of all, the shock-absorbing suspension smoothes out uneven floors, so operators no longer have to slow down when crossing ramps, boards or sills. The result is faster loading and unloading – and higher productivity all round.

The WT 3000 is also equipped with Crown’s state-of-the-art Access 1 2 3® control and diagnostics system. Performance parameters can be programmed for drivers with different skill sets, or adjusted for specific working conditions. Changing settings is straightforward, as there is no need to connect a laptop or PC.

Innovations that meet real customer needs
Only by working closely with end-users was the Crown team able to research specific needs in depth, then develop innovative features that fully satisfy those needs. Take the Quick-Exit side restraints on the folding-platform model, for example, which reduce the number of steps operators must take to walk round the truck. Quick-Exit restraints mean drivers save two steps every time they climb down, thereby significantly enhancing productivity and reducing fatigue. Fixed-platform models are fitted with Crown’s patented Entry Bar Safety Switch, which brings the vehicle to a full stop if the operator moves his or her foot outside the platform perimeter – a major safety enhancement. Rear-entry models are available with Crown’s unique, patented, weight-adjustable FlexRide system, which optimises driving comfort by tuning the vehicle’s suspension to the individual operator’s body weight.
The sum of these features is a decisive contribution to improving productivity and efficiency in the warehouse and on the loading dock.

  • High-load Linear Actuators for Nanopositioning

With the N-216 series NEXLINE drives, Physik Instrumente (PI) from Karlsruhe has now available in its product range new high-load linear actuators which combine travel ranges of 20 mm, pull or push forces of up to 600 N and positioning accuracies in the nanometer range. They are suitable for open-loop and closed-loop operation: The integrated encoder of the versions which can be operated in closed-loop mode has a resolution of 5 nm over the total travel range. In open-loop mode, e.g. for highly dynamic applications, position resolutions of up to 30 picometers are achieved. In order to make the best possible adjustment of the drives to the relevant application, two different controllers are available: The E-755 offers all functions for a positioning with nanometer accuracy and covers thus most applications well. The E-712 controller system additionally has improved linearization algorithms for extremely steady motion and allows faster feed-forward motions with maximum force.
The NEXLINE drives produce the feed forward using a combination of longitudinal and shearing piezos, i.e. piezo actuators with different motion characteristics. If they are driven appropriately, clamping as well as also driving motions can be realized, which resemble the motion of a quadruped. The load can thus be moved with constant speed over the total distance. Additionally, in this way the position can be actively readjusted after the target position is reached. This can be used to compensate vibrations. Since the drives have no moving parts such as gears or leadscrews, there is no mechanical play and no wear.

  • GSF Launches New Flag-ship Line of Heavy Duty Slides

After months of planning, GSF are delighted to announce the launch of their own range of Heavy Duty, shock resistant slides to replace their old discontinued line. GSF’s HD range centres on precision, price and performance and replaces the older, less cost effective heavy-duty slides without compromising on quality or weight distribution.

GSF’s announcement, early this week, is decisive in that it closes the gap between manufacturer and end user by ensuring supply security and a marked reduction in the cost of the HD range of slides. “We’ve been very careful that the new range should meet, and indeed exceed, the discontinued range in every respect, including better load capacity on lower width profiles,” said Managing Director – Jonathan Lye.

Entirely manufactured from cold drawn steel profile with extensive after machining, the new HD slides have much more reliable action and precise movement without the usual costs associated with a hardened raceway product. Less well-made products, which have little or no machining after the drawing process, lead to inconsistency of ball track and the malfunctioning of the slide. To overcome this, slides are fitted loosely, but this leads to a reduction in load capacity and an increase in deflection. GSF’s new HD range means that from now on there’s no need to fit the slides loosely to take up poor manufacturing tolerances.

GSF’s own HD range delivers precision, price and performance to the Blue Light and Defence Industries and is available to order now. For sales please contact Tony Macis, UK Sales Director, on 07971 920 233

  • Efficient machining of Aluminium – the PCD-arbor milling cutter

The new PCD-arbor milling cutter (PCD face-corner milling cutter) of HAM in Schwendi-Hörenhausen is specially designed for machining of Aluminium. Constructed as a modular tooling system, the compact adaptor and clamping chuck (Monoblock), as well as the arbor milling cutter itself, build together the two main components. For this reason, the PCD arbor milling cutter can easily be exchanged if required. With its brazed PCD-cutting edges an axial runout accuracy of 0,003 mm and a concentricity of 0,01 mm is guaranteed. By the combination of the unequal number of teeth and the positive cutting edge geometry, an improvement of the surface quality and machining accuracy is achieved and thereby vibrations are avoided as far as possible. By the resharpenable PCD-cutting edges, it is possible to achieve cutting depths until 8 mm. The PCD-arbor milling cutter is suitable for roughing and finishing of work pieces, made of Al-cast and Aluminium solid material.

  • Tennis Racket Stringing Patterns

    Phantom camera
is used to characterize performance of
Power Angle ® diagonally strung tennis rackets

Vision Research high-speed Phantom cameras used to identify performance advantages of tennis racket stringing patterns.
Tennis is a game of speed, agility and precision. The sport requires a significant amount of concentration and hand-eye coordination, especially when your opponent serves a felt tennis ball in your direction at speeds upwards of 120 miles-per-hour! It’s also a sport known for its subsequent injuries, especially lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), which affects 40 percent to 50 percent of tennis players. That being said, those who take to the court are always in search of ways to reduce stress and potential injury, as long as the solution doesn’t sacrifice performance.
Reassessment and modifications to tennis equipment, namely the racket, have been the focus of many manufacturers and professionals over the years, with a significant amount of attention falling on the stringing pattern, where the impact with the tennis ball actually takes place. Besides the obvious advantages yielded by high-performance, lightweight composite materials such as graphite – used in the construction of the racket frame – and the benefits of natural gut and synthetic gut (nylon) for stringing, many tennis players feel that employing a diagonal stringing pattern can effectively reduce vibration, a leading cause of tennis elbow. Diagonal stringing, a method consisting of opposite pairs of equal strings, has been developed to reduce harmful vibrations without compromising the performance offered by a conventional (perpendicular) pattern.
To clearly identify the benefits of each stringing pattern, Vision Research
worked alongside Micah Joselow*, a junior at Ossining High School, in Ossining, N.Y., who spearheaded a scientific research project focused on highlighting the characteristics of a PowerAngle diagonally-strung racket versus a conventionally strung racket. Vision Research provided Joselow with a high-speed, Phantom v7.1 digital camera, which was utilized to record the interaction of a projected tennis ball with each racket. Joselow’s findings were impressive and in recognition of his work, the project took first place honors in the Physics category at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) and won the prestigious Yale Science and Engineering Award.
