  • “New” ultra fine graphite lubricant CONDAFORGE 607

“New” ultra fine graphite lubricant CONDAFORGE 607

With over 155 years experience in the lubricants industry, CONDAT is constantly developing and improving its products. Besides its wide range of forging lubricants (water and oil based graphite, graphite free synthetic lubricants & glass coatings) formulated for all forging processes (ferrous, non-ferrous, aerospace, warm & hot), CONDAT offers its customer’s technical expertise and an individualized approach.

Forge Fair 2010 in Cincinnati, OH, USA presents the opportunity for CONDAT to introduce a new lubricating solution for the forging market:

    CONDAFORGE 607

CONDAFORGE 607 is a “new” water-based lubricant developed
for warm and hot forging of ferrous metals, or for the forging of
titanium alloys. This specific formulation technology combines an
ultra-fine graphite with an optimized binder system allowing
exceptional adhesion of the graphited film on high temperature dies. With this tenacious lubricating film, complicated parts can be produced as it allows for higher deformation (such as long extruded parts).

CONDAFORGE 607 also improves part fill and leaves no residue on tools, increasing die life.

The high level of lubricating solids contained in CONDAFORGE 607 allows low concentrations (2% to 20%) and generates substantial savings in lubricant consumption. CONDAFORGE 607 can be easily diluted in water and does not generate fumes or flames. As water-based product, there are no fire hazards and CONDAFORGE 607 is odourless as it does not contain ammonia.

  • Temcor Aluminum Domes

Efficient in design, distinctive in appearance, unsurpassed in quality and value – Temcor Aluminum Domes are as beautiful as they are efficient and enduring.

    Design Flexibility
The Temcor Aluminum Dome is a unique and patented triangulated space truss skinned with aluminum panels secured by a patented Temcor batten closure system.

With an ability to cover spans from 40 to more than 1000 feet, Temcor Aluminum Domes are specified for churches, arenas, planetariums and observatories… wherever clear-span roof systems are needed. Aluminum integrated structural frames are permanent and lightweight and optional panel systems offer eye-dazzling options.

    Superior Design and Lower Cost
The dome’s superior structural design gives it many advantages. Using proprietary variations of geodesic geometry, Temcor Aluminum Domes are noted for their ability to meet exacting live load requirements by providing greater stiffness and strength, pound-for-pound, than any other dome geometry system.

Temcor domes have been designed for snow loads of up to 165 pounds per square foot and windloads of up to 150 mph. And, Temcor’s panel design is specifically engineered to support loads of up to 500 pounds on any one square foot.

And the energy efficiency of Temcor Aluminum Domes translates to reduced operating expenses. Since they’re made of aluminum, they have the inherent advantage of high heat reflectivity and low emissivity. That means lower heating and cooling costs.

Save on maintenance dollars too. The permanent aluminum exterior never rusts, rots, spalls, or solar degrades. And because Temcor Aluminum Domes use less material and labor than conventional constructions, overall costs are lower and construction time is faster. The built-in advantages of aluminum and lifetime beauty of a Temcor Aluminum Dome will be appreciated for years to come.

The 58th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring is set to begin tomorrow at 10:30 AM, and with Audi out and Peugeot already dominating the LMP class in the qualifying sessions, the attention turns to the ALMS GT cars – specially the Porsche and Corvette teams.

The rivalry between the Flying Lizards and the Corvette C6.Rs has been stoked (even further) by Chevrolet’s new racing webisodes, and after last year’s final lap at Laguna Seca, the GT-class feuding is sure to make for some great racing.

After the jump you’ll find a video documenting the Lizard’s practice session yesterday, including Hans Herrman – the winner of the 1960 race – taking a lap around Sebring in a immaculate Porsche RS 60 Spyder. If you’re planning to tune in tomorrow, you can download Andy Blackmore’s stellar spotter’s guide in all its high-res glory here and read our breakdown of this year’s season here.

  • More ACTA Leaks: Would Create Special Organization To Manage Worldwide Copyright Laws

The more of ACTA that leaks, the worse it seems. KEI has the details on another portion of ACTA that had not leaked yet, which focuses on setting up new institutions that would manage ACTA after it was implemented. Basically, it would be an ongoing organization tasked with continuing to update ACTA’s rules — sort of a parallel organization to WIPO, which already exists, but which has recently committed the mortal sin of actually listening to consumer rights groups. The scary part is that this group would be allowed to amend ACTA provisions on the fly. And, while this new organization can “extend invitations” to governments, it’s still being debated what non-governmental organizations will be able to take part. KEI notes that the “USTR has told members of Congress it is their intention to marginalize the participation by consumer interest organizations in the new forum,” though does not provide a citation for this point.

Either way, it seems like the goal here is to create an extra-governmental body that effectively controls copyright law around the globe, with little input from the actual governments or the people they represent. And, of course, if the folks involved in ACTA negotiations are any indication of who will be involved in this group, you can assume that they will be strong supporters of the viewpoint of the legacy industries: that intellectual property law is designed solely to protect those industry’s business models, and not to promote the wider progress of culture and the economy.

  • McLaren MP4-12C performance stats have arrived

McLaren MP4-12C – Click above for high-res image gallery

If you read our deep dive on the McLaren MP4-12C, you’re thoroughly up to speed on the automaker’s latest foray into supercardom. However, something was missing. McLaren hadn’t provided the rudimentary performance figures to keep bench racers and keyboard jockeys frothing at the mouth. Until today.

According to recent reports the MP4-12C is able to crack the 60 mph mark in “under three seconds” when utilizing the launch control feature on its seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Partnered with its 2,870 curb weight (there’s still some debate if that’s “dry” or fully loaded with fluids) and 600 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, the more telling stat is its 0-124 mph time of “under 10 seconds.”

For those of you keeping track at home, the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo hits 60 in 3.2 seconds, the Corvette ZR1 breaks the mark at 3.5 seconds, with the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and Ferrari 458 Italia coming in at 3.4 and 3.3 seconds respectively – not to mention the Nissan GT-R‘s 3.5-second run. So, is Maranello losing sleep tonight? Not likely. But there’s officially a new player in the supercar set, and we can’t wait to get our grubby paws on it.

  • People Realizing That Viacom’s Filings Take YouTube Quotes Totally Out Of Context

I had pointed this out in a comment yesterday, but with so many press reports suggesting that Viacom’s filing found some sort of “smoking gun” in the YouTube emails concerning founders talking about “stealing” videos, it’s worth pointing out that Viacom appears to have taken these quotes totally out of context. Thankfully, TechCrunch is putting some of them right back into context and noticing that Viacom is clearly misrepresenting what YouTube’s founders were talking about. The key quote that Viacom (and many in the press) are highlighting is the following:

In a July 29,2005 email about competing video websites, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen wrote to YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim, “steal it!”, and Chad Hurley responded: “hmm, steal the movies?”

That looks damning, right? Except the context shows that they weren’t talking about copyright infringement of big name Hollywood content at all. They were talking about looking at other viral video sites that were popular on the fringes at the time — usually showing random silly homemade videos that went viral and putting those videos on YouTube. Furthermore, when you see the full discussion, you can see that in the context, they were joking about taking that content. Really, they were discussing what kind of site they wanted YouTube to be: should it be for more serious videos, or should they focus on those kinds of traffic-getting viral videos. In fact, in the context of the discussion, they play up the fact that their content is user-generated, rather than pulled from outside sources:

    SUBJECT: Re:http://www.filecabi.net/

Jul 29, 2005 1:05 AM, Steve Chen wrote:

    steal it!

    Jul 29, 2005 1 :25 AM, Chad Hurley wrote:

    hmm, steal the movies?

    Jul 29, 2005 1 :33 AM, Steve Chen wrote:

    haha ya.

    or something.

just something to watch out for. check out their alexa ranking.

    -s

Jul 29, 2005 7:45 AM, Chad Hurley wrote:

hmm, i know they are getting a lot of traffic… but it’s because they are a stupidvideos.com-type of site. they might make enough money to pay hosing bills, but sites like this and big-boys.com will never go public. I would really like to build something more valuable and more useful. actually build something that people will talk about and changes the way people use video on the internet.

Jul 29 2005 6:51 AM, Steve Chen wrote:

right, i understand those goals but, at the same time, we have to keep in mind that we need to attract traffic. how much traffic will we get from the personal videos? remember, the only reason why our traffic surged was due to a video of this type.
i’m not really disagreeing with you but i also think we shouldn’t be so high & mighty and think we’re better than these guys. viral videos will tend to be THOSE type of videos.

    -s

Jul 29 2005 6:56 AM, Steve Chen Wrote:

another thing. still a fundamental difference between us and most of those other sites. we do have a community and it’s ALL user generated content.

    -s

Not quite the discussion that Viacom implies. In fact, the more you look at the full context of almost every quote that Viacom and the press are playing up, the more and more Viacom’s entire argument crumbles.

  • NIGERIA: Acting President Consolidates Power Amid Unrest

By Charles Fromm WASHINGTON, Mar 19 (IPS) This week, acting Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan dissolved his cabinet, further securing his tenuous hold on the country's top post amidst rising unrest in the Niger Delta and flaring religious tensions in the central region of the country.

On Wednesday, Goodluck dismissed all of ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua's ministers, effectively allowing the acting president to appoint ministers of his choosing.

Yar'Adua, who has been receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia for three months, returned to Nigeria on Feb. 24 amidst a heavy military presence at the airport, but hasn't been seen since.

"[Jonathan] did not give us any reason for the dissolution of the cabinet," said Dora Akunyili, the information minister, in a short statement released on Wednesday.

On Feb. 10, Nigeria's National Assembly voted to make Goodluck the acting president. Since then, Goodluck's aggressive power consolidation has furthered the hopes of many Nigerians hopes that reform is imminent.

"[Jonathan's dissolution of the cabinet] is a signal for many that Goodluck Jonathan is perhaps about to put in place his own men, his own women, his own team," said Al Jazeera's Nigeria correspondent, Yvonne Ndege, on Thursday.

"It was felt by many Nigerians that the cabinet was basically packed to the rafters with Yar'Adua loyalists who weren't doing the job they were supposed to be doing, or rather doing a good enough job," said Ndege.

Questions still remain over who will take on the post of vice president, as well as who will gain the support of the military. With elections due in less than one year, the clock is ticking for Goodluck Jonathan to present a viable path forward.

The military, which holds considerable sway in Nigerian politics, appears to be at odds about the current leadership crisis. John Campbell, who served as U.S. ambassador to Nigeria between 2004 and 2007, wrote in a recent op-ed in the Huffington Post that "the Nigerian military appears as splintered as the rest of the federal government."

Campbell went on to surmise that some elements within the army are staying loyal to Yar'Adua, as neither Jonathan nor the chief of defense staff – the most senior officer in the military – were notified about Yar'Adua's return.

A large number of military personnel greeted Yar'Adua's plane and escorted his ambulance to the presidential palace upon his return from Saudi Arabia.

It is not clear who wields power in the country at this point, or if Yar'Adua's absence becomes permanent, who will take over.

A new vice president must be approved by majority vote in both houses of the National Assembly and with the absence of a potential candidate who commands enough support in both houses, many are unsure of how to proceed.

The accession of Jonathan – who is Christian – also threatens to derail an informal power-sharing arrangement, in effect since 1999, which rests upon a rotation of the presidency every two terms between the largely Muslim north and the mostly Christian south.

According to the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW), since 1999, approximately 13,500 people have died in religious violence that has persisted throughout Plateau State, a region located in the centre of the country, which separates the Muslim north from the Christian south.

Goodluck Jonathan is of the Ijaw, an ethnic group indigenous to the Delta region. Many hope he will take a more pro-active stance between multinational oil corporations, the Nigerian state and the people who live there.

Last week, HRW called on acting President Jonathan to investigate the most recent massacre in Plateau State, around the city of Jos, where over 300 people including women and children were killed.

Spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Robin Waudo, told the BBC, "It seems like these are reprisal attacks from what happened a few weeks ago," referring to an attack on a Muslim village in January that claimed almost 200 lives.

Nigeria's southern Delta region also remains in a state of upheaval.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has recently called off a ceasefire and announced an expansion of their targets to include oil companies, such as Total, who were previously left untouched by the MEND.

Washington's interest in Nigeria has grown as its importance as a source of imported oil has increased in recent years.

The Niger Delta is an impoverished, polluted area that sits on substantial petroleum deposits. It has become one of the world's starkest and most disturbing examples of the "resource curse" – rampant corruption, human rights abuses and poor development indicators that often plague resource-rich countries – according to a recent Amnesty International report.

Last week, a coalition of MEND leaders rejected a long-stalled amnesty deal offered by the government. The bombing of a conference, which was convened to discuss the initiative, followed MENDs refusal of the governments deal.

The Delta's inhabitants have been campaigning for control of their natural resources for years. After the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa, a prominent activist and proponent of non-violence, militant groups such as MEND took centre-stage, employing guerrilla tactics to achieve their aims.

In the last decade, Nigeria has asserted itself as a counterweight on the continent to South Africa's economic and cultural hegemony in sub-Saharan Africa. However, corruption has pervaded government since the 1970's, when oil production was nationalised under a military government – its profits carving out an elite ruling class.

Ah, leave it to The Onion to successfully encapsulate the state of the recording industry with a report that is basically as accurate as most of the reports that come out of the RIAA these days:

The Recording Industry Association of America announced Tuesday that the combined revenue brought in by Warner, Sony, EMI, Universal, and countless independent music labels in 2009 totaled $18. “The music industry is back,” RIAA representative Doug Fowley said. “Not only was Kenny Chesney’s Greatest Hits CD purchased at a Knoxville, TN Borders for $12.99, but we also had two songs downloaded through iTunes, and our ringtone sales reached three.” Fowley added that as long as no one returns or exchanges the CD, the music industry would continue to be a vital and creative force in American culture.

  • Joel Ewanick defects from Hyundai to Nissan, takes top marketing post

Over the past couple of years, Hyundai has been credited as having some of the best marketing efforts of any automaker in the U.S. The executive most credited with such programs as Hyundai’s Assurance program is Joel Ewanick. As vice-president of marketing at Hyundai Motor America, he led the team that came up with ideas like Hyundai Assurance, which promises to continue making payments or take a car back if a buyer loses his or her job.

Ewanick is now moving over to Nissan North America where he will take on the same task for the Nissan division. Ewanick is replacing Christian Meunier, who was recently appointed president of Nissan Brazil. Ewanick starts at Nissan on Monday March 22, so prepare for some marketing magic out of Nissan’s Tennessee headquarters shortly thereafter if he does for Nissan what he did for his former employer.

  • Report: Disgruntled hacker disables 100 cars in Texas remotely

Omar Ramos-Lopez’ retaliation on his former employers’ customers might be something we conjure up while lying sleepless in bed, but we’ve got the power of self-restraint. Omar? Not so much. Ignoring his locus of control, Ramos-Lopez retaliated against Texas Auto Center after he was fired from by activating the GPS-enabled immobilizer systems the dealer fits to some of its cars. Some customers missed work, others had horns that kept honking and many had to pay for towing and repair.

In all, more than 100 people were impacted by the actions of Ramos-Lopez, a 20-year-old now facing charges for breach of computer security. Austin police say Ramos-Lopez accessed the computer system in an attempt to block the dealership’s access to its own Pay Technologies account. Customer names were changed to things like “Tupac,” and it took a couple days to figure out who the culprit was. Ramos-Lopez had been fired a month before the incident, and he’s now facing between four months and two years in state prison if convicted.

  • Too Little Too Late: Universal Music Finally Realizes That Maybe CDs Were Too Expensive

David Herron alerts us to the news that it’s finally occurred to the brain trust at Universal Music that, perhaps, CD prices were too high. They’ve introduced a “new pricing structure,” which effectively means they’ve lowered the suggested retail prices on many CDs to between $6 and $10. Amusingly, the article quotes an anonymous person at a competitor who doesn’t like this at all:

“Why does Universal feel the need to get below $10?”

Uh, perhaps because the market is shrinking because people find it too expensive otherwise. Either way, this move seems like way too little, way too late. Doing this in the late 90s might have been a start, but this isn’t going to get people who have stopped buying CDs back into a plastic disc fix.

  • 2011 Ford Edge ordering guide hits the Intertubes

2011 Ford Edge Sport – Click above for high-res image gallery

After spending some time with the 2011 Ford Edge Sport, it’s obvious Ford did more than just a run-of-the-mill mid-cycle refresh. And with the overhauled crossover hitting showrooms this summer, more and more information is trickling out. A member of the Blue Oval forums apparently found the Edge’s order guide, giving us a complete rundown of the four Edge packages available at launch.

First, let’s begin with what we already know. The Edge will be available in SE, SEL, Limited and Sport trims, come standard with an overhauled 285-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 powerplant and the Sport model will get the same 305-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 that powers the 2011 Mustang V6. According to the ordering guide, Ford expects 17 percent of customers to opt for the base SE model, 39 percent to go for the mid-level SEL, 40 percent to choose the Limited and only four percent to choose the 22-inch wheels of the Sport model.

SE buyers will have two Rapid Spec option packages from which to choose, though the pickings are slim. Spec 101A includes a convenience package with auto-headlamps, a compass, keyless entry and a reverse sensing system. The SEL will add everything from the best SE model plus standard equipment including 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, heated mirrors, a six-way power driver’s seat and dual-zone temperature control. The SEL trim will also afford three different packages: Rapid Spec 201A includes the eight-inch LCD MyTouch interface with SYNC and a rear-view camera while Spec 202A adds features like leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, a 10-way power driver’s seat and ambient lighting.

Stand alone options include an expansive Vista Roof (available with spec 201A or 202A) and Ford’s excellent navigation system (available with spec 202A). Jump to the Limited Edge and MyTouch, SYNC, leather, heated seats with power adjust in the front row and visual cues all around are all standard. The Limited has three rapid specs, with The Blue Oval expecting 301A to be the most popular. The package includes navigation, HID headlamps and the Vista Roof. Spec 302A adds BLISS blind spot protection and adaptive cruise control, while the low volume Sport model comes with scores of standard features including the aforementioned 22-inch wheels and 3.7-liter drivetrain. All options, including navigation, are a-la-carte. What the alleged Edge order guide doesn’t include is pricing or any information about the 2.0-liter turbo model, which reportedly won’t be available until 2011. Check the gallery below for the full guide.
