  • KINTO: Laminated Bus Bar

    Laminated bus bar system:

A laminated bus bar system consists of flat conductors separated by insulating layers. The conductors and insulating layers are laminated together by special technology to form a monolithic multi-conductor assembly. Often the edges of the conductors are sealed, and the bus bar system can be completely insulated on the outside.

The conductors are usually tin-coated copper. According to the technical requirements, the insulating material can be Nomex, polyester, Kapton, epoxy-type powder coating, or other insulating films.

    Advantages of laminated bus bar:

    – high current with less voltage drop
    – lower inductance
    – reduction of noise on the power buses
    – precision-engineered components fitted with various connectors and fitting precisely in the space provided for them
    – reduction of probability of incorrect assembly
    – much less susceptible to problems created by flexing, shock, or vibration

  • New solutions for safe electrostatic grounding in hazardous areas

When handling combustible liquids or powders, operators are faced with an invisible, often underrated risk: electrostatic discharges, a potential source of sparks that can ignite explosive atmospheres. In order to prevent this, and to enable the safe handling of hazardous substances, R. STAHL offers the new type 8485 and type 7485 grounding monitoring devices. These units ensure the safe elimination of electrostatic charges during the loading and unloading of tank vehicles such as tank trucks or tank wagons. Unlike simple earthing cables, this solution continuously monitors the connection between the grounding monitoring device and the grounded object. Impaired or broken connections due to cable damages or operating errors are detected and signalled to the operator via a red indicator lamp. Additionally, two relay contacts allow for an automatic interruption of the loading process. Furthermore, the new grounding devices also enable users to differentiate between the connection of the clamp with tank trucks and the connection with the loading equipment, thus considerably reducing the risk of operator errors.

The grounding monitoring devices are suitable for outdoor installation and can even be used in extreme climates (-50 °C to +60 °C). Both types are equipped with an IP65 housing. 8485 devices are designed for use in zone 1, while the 7485 series has been optimised for installation in zone 2 as well as zone 21 and 22 hazardous dust atmospheres. A two-channel version, i.e. a model with two earthing clamps, allows for efficient monitoring of combined loading units, e.g. trains and trucks. In that case, the monitoring mode can be individually adapted to the application for each of the two clamps. In addition to the corrosion-resistant earthing clamp with good contact pressure, the solution includes a robust, oil-resistant cable. The clamps are available with simple cables, spiral cables or an automatic retractor suitable for use in zone 1.

  • JUMO Wtrans: Wireless temperature measuring system with ATEX approval

More versions have been added to the JUMO Wtrans temperature measuring system, taking into account diverse customer requests for products covering a wide variety of different areas of application. New to the product line is a transmitter with ATEX approval. Also new to the Wtrans family of products are transmitters containing a highly temperature-resistant electronics module, that can be used up to a temperature of 125°C .
Transmitters with ATEX approval can be put directly into a potentially explosive atmosphere. The receiver is mounted outside the actual EX zone. This means that cost-intensive installations with protective barriers and supply isolators are unnecessary. JUMO’s wireless technology shows a totally new approach here, and allows the customer to transmit temperature measurements across boundaries, out of the EX zone. The Wtrans transmitter can be located in Zone 0, right up to the process connection. In this example, the probe handle is in Zone 1. Of course, it is also possible to operate the entire instrument in Zone 1. Then, for the first time, it is possible to regard a hazardous EX area as being completely disconnected from the “outside world”.
The transmitter is still located in the probe handle and is protected by a waterproof and dustproof housing. A blue plastic handle was chosen as an outward distinguishing feature.
Instruments with a temperature resistance up to 125°C are used in applications where it is mandatory for the transmission electronics to be installed in the actual process. This is the case in continuous furnaces, for example, where the transmitters have to be in the product to measure, and they transmit their temperature data out of the hot zone. A gray plastic handle is the outward distinguishing feature here.
There are versions that can be used to measure from
–30 to +260°C with a fixed protection tube, as well as versions for a temperature range of –200 to +600°C with M12 connectors and a remote temperature sensor. It is the responsibility of the user to scale the particular output value and this can be individually adapted to the measurement task.
The rail-mounted receivers still make the measurement values available over four analog outputs (0[4] – 20 mA, 0 – 10 V) or two analog outputs and two floating relays, as well as over an RS-485 interface with a Modbus protocol. As many as 16 Wtrans transmitters can be managed over this interface for each receiver.

  • Abanaki Oil Skimmers Provide Non-pump Solution for Groundwater Remediation

Skimmers eliminate the need to treat water; remove only hydrocarbons from well

Abanaki Corporation, the world leader in oil skimmer products, offers an arsenal of oil skimmers to remove hydrocarbons from groundwater at low cost. Oil skimming is the only non-pump solution for groundwater remediation. With products from the PetroXtractor to its belt and tube skimmer models, Abanaki delivers remediation tools that are technically robust and more cost effective than pump-and-treat systems.

Abanaki’s campaign has focused on the education of engineers, explaining that oil skimming is much less expensive than pumping water to the surface and running it through filters. In many cases, skimming can be used to treat water before filtering, thus extending the lifespan of the filter itself.

Economically speaking, skimming surpasses the pump-and-treat system, which involves placing a bailer, pump, or similar object down into the well that draws the water and the hydrocarbons out. The water is then treated to remove the hydrocarbons. But the skimmer eliminates the need to treat the water and removes only the hydrocarbon out of the well. Not only does it eliminate the need to treat the water, but it also allows for the oil to be recycled or sold for other use.

Oil skimmers are commonly used for groundwater remediation throughout the country and by various environmental firms and companies. Abanaki’s PetroXtractor belt skimmer, in particular, is specifically designed for groundwater remediation and is modified to allow it to fit into small places allowing use of existing monitoring wells. The belt on the PetroXtractor oil skimmer is specifically tailored to the type of hydrocarbon that is in the well. The skimmer also has other modifications such as heat, stabilizer rods and a wide variety of belt materials to aid in picking up specific hydrocarbons. The belt skimmer provides a dependable, efficient low-maintenance alternative to other methods.

Typically, Abanaki’s PetroXtractor oil skimmer is used in applications in which there are existing monitoring wells or trenches. The skimmer comes in three different sizes to allow for optimal removal based on the application. The skimmer is available with a 1″ wide belt for 2″ well casings, 2″ wide belt for 4″ well casings and a 4″ wide belt for well cases 6+ ” in diameter. The skimmer can pick up both LNAPL and DNAPL products at depths up to 100 feet. This unit can prove twice as environmentally friendly with the option of solar power.

About Abanaki Corporation: Abanaki, the world leader in oil skimmer products, manufactures a wide range of products to remove oils, greases, solvents, and related hydrocarbons from water. Skimmer models are available with removal rates ranging from 1 to 200 gallons per hour in both stationary and portable systems.

  • VERDERFLEX PERISTALTIC PUMPS ORDERED FOR COBALT PURIFICATION

Peristaltic pump specialist Verderflex has recently exported thirty of its VF hose pumps to Morocco. Manufactured in Leeds, these models continue to prove their ability to reduce downtime, minimise maintenance costs and ensure the reliable pumping of abrasive, corrosive, viscous and high density fluids.

The pumps were ordered to fulfil an essential role in the refining of cobalt. Although The Democratic Republic of The Congo is by far the largest producer of this non-metallurgical metal, Morocco is a significant supplier to Europe. It is widely used in the production of pigment for the ceramics and glass industries and rising demand has led to investment in new mines.

Principally the pumps are being used to transfer sulphuric acid and ammonia solutions from storage and dilution tanks to reactors and baths. These solutions are used in electrolysis, a process whereby the cobalt is rinsed to eliminate impurities and separate it from other ore components such as nickel, iron and arsenic.

Exact dosing of the sulphuric acid in accordance with the pH value of the mined cobalt is vital to ensure its purity and concentration. To achieve this, the capacity of the Verderflex pump is automatically adjusted by a frequency controller that is driven by a pH meter. The VF pump is ideal for such an application as the absence of product slip in the hose gives a 100% volumetric efficiency.

Other Verderflex units are being employed as feed pumps for centrifuges at Morocco’s cobalt mines. The process water that remains from the band filtration process results in a filter cake with residues. The fluids that are both acidic and abrasive are captured in collection basins. The VF peristaltic hose pumps feed centrifuges that remove fine powder from the process waste water.

The design features of the Verderflex VF pump makes it ideal for handling abrasive and highly corrosive products. The medium does not come into contact with any of the pump’s rotating parts and is totally contained within a robust, heavy-duty hose which consists of an inner layer, 2 – 6 reinforcement layers and an outer layer. Also as the hose is the only wearing part it can be rapidly exchanged to ensure minimum downtime.

  • Medigenic Cleanable Keyboards Selected for Use in Hospitals Across England

The Connecting for Health Agency within the United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) has purchased 7,500 Medigenic infection resistant keyboards for use in hospitals across England, in a move designed to help improve patient safety by preventing the spread of hospital infections.

Originally developed for University College London Hospital (UCLH), in a pilot project supported by NHS, the keyboards incorporate a flashing light to remind users to regularly clean the surface and sensors to measure the effectiveness of cleaning them.

Keyboards are regarded as high-risk objects in hospitals, capable of harboring infections due to their many crevices and holes, which can hold an accumulation of debris. These new completely flat keyboards are covered with a hypoallergenic material resistant to bacterial growth.

The keyboard features a timed warning light that can be configured to meet the needs of different environments. The warning light will only go out if all the sensors are activated, indicating the keyboard has been thoroughly cleaned. An internal evaluation by UCLH has proved that the keyboard warning light reinforces awareness of the NHS ‘Clean your hands’ campaign, increasing hand washing by up to 10%.

Research by microbiologists at UCLH supported by NHS has shown that bacteria levels on the keyboards fall by 70% if they are cleaned every 12 hours.

National Clinical Lead for Clinical Safety, Maureen Baker said, “This represents a significant step forward in the drive to tackle hospital-acquired infections and cut the number of cases of MRSA. These keyboards provide staff with a constant reminder of the importance of washing their hands and keeping their computer clean.”

By Suleiman Mbatiah NAIROBI, Mar 19 (IPS) Kenya’s Constitutional Court heard yesterday from counsel representing the government that the Anti-Counterfeit Act of 2008 does not threaten the importation or manufacturing of cheap generic medicines and therefore does not deny Kenyans their constitutional right to life.

Three people living with HIV and AIDS have approached the Constitutional Court to challenge the new law, enacted mid-2009, as it may cause confusion between counterfeit and generic medicines, which make up 90 percent of medicines dispensed in the low income East African country.

The petitioners are challenging sections two, 32 and 34 of the Anti-Counterfeit Act. The law fails to acknowledge and to specifically exempt generic medicines from the definition of counterfeits in accordance with the allowances in the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) agreement, according to the petitioners.

Therefore, the definition is regarded as more onerous than TRIPS (known as "TRIPS-plus") as it may prohibit the importation and manufacturing of generic drugs in Kenya. The act’s definition of counterfeit goods is regarded as too wide.

Counterfeiting is defined as, "(t)aking the following actions without the authority of the owner of any intellectual property right subsisting in Kenya or elsewhere in respect of protected goods, (such as) the manufacture, production, packaging, re‐packaging, labeling or making, whether in Kenya or elsewhere, of any goods whereby those protected goods are imitated in such manner and to such a degree that those other goods are identical or substantially similar copies of the protected goods".

Section 34 of the act gives the Kenya Revenue Authority "excessive powers that may be abused" and may also violate the TRIPS agreement, according to the petitioners.

Arguing in defence, the senior state litigation counsel Peter Bosire said the petitioners do not have a case as they are misreading the act. He insisted that the act’s definition is clear and does not threaten the importation of generic medicines, as alleged by the petitioners and interested parties.

"Importation of drugs and the use of ARVs (anti-retroviral medicines) are not prohibited by the act… only mislabeling of medicines (is)," he said, adding that the act seeks to criminalise deliberate mislabeling of medicines.

Bosire further argued that neither the petitioner nor the interested parties has demonstrated that the government or its agencies are in breach of constitutional rights.

In his retort, the petitioners’ counsel, David Majanja, described the act as interfering with the constitutionally guaranteed right to life: "There’s much harm and damage to people living with HIV if the act is enforced as it will inhibit access to essential medicines."

The enforcement and application of the act, particularly sections 2, 32 and 34, will endanger the petitioners’ right to life by arbitrarily denying them access to affordable and essential medication.

He added that the act also contravenes sections of the Industrial Property Act of 2001 that allows government to utilise parallel importation, as per multilateral agreement, in the interests of public health.

According to Christa Cepuch, Health Action International Africa programme director, "counterfeits should not be confused with generics. We are totally against the manufacture of counterfeits that is a threat to the health sector."

Cepuch told IPS that the act hands excessive power to police and border officials who lack the necessary knowledge to distinguish counterfeit medicines from generic medicines.

Aids Law Project lawyer Omwanza Ombati argued that authorities might use loopholes in the law to erroneously interpret generics as counterfeits due to the ambiguities in the law. The Aids Law Project is a non-governmental organisation championing access to adequate healthcare and treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS.

"The wording in the law means that drugs imported under parallel procedures might be seized at border points or ports," Ombati told IPS.

The Kenyan government has had research conducted that showed that consumption of contraband or counterfeit products causes local manufacturers to lose about 650 million dollars annually in sales.

Bosire argued that the court challenge could compromise the enactment of the law which covers a spectrum of products apart from medicines.

The ruling will be made on Apr 23.

Similar legislation has either been tabled or adopted in Zambia, Tanzania and Uganda and is also being considered at the level of the East African Community.
