  • Bill Ackman’s Worst Nightmare: US Prison Numbers Actually Falling

    bill-ackman

Believe it or not, for the first time 1972, the US prison population is actually getting lower.

According to the New York Times, state prisons held 1.4 million people as of January 1st, almost 6% lower than the year before.

Chalk it up to marijuana reform laws or a massive budget crisis, no one knows if this is a temporary dip or a permanent sea change for a country that’ll throw you in jail for just about anything.

Interestingly, hedge funders like Bill Ackman and Whitney Tilson are probably grunting at these new numbers as both bet on continued prisons growth. More specifically, they’ve bet on a growing private prison industy, so they could be fine, so long as private prisons continue to gain market share.

  • iWork.com Beta Updated, Still No Editing

The iWork.com team at Apple sent out an e-mail to registered users today touting new accessibility from Apple mobile devices and more sharing options for all. However, the biggest feature, really the only feature that matter — editing documents — remains missing.

Carefully not introduced as an online productivity suite designed for collaboration, the iWork.com beta site has existed as little more than an online repository for sharing iWork documents. The only real advantage over simply e-mailing documents has been the ability to comment via sticky note and downloading in multiple formats.

More than a year later, the changes have been minimal, and that may be exactly the way Apple wants it.

As of today, “iWork.com allows you to share a document by creating a public link” with an incredibly long URL. However, accessing the public link does not allow the adding of comments or notes. Sharing documents is a little more efficient with a single page for doing so and a counter indicating the number of views for the document.

The other change, likely in anticipation of the iPad, is something that iWork.com should have included from the beginning: a mobile interface.

The new interface has “improved scrolling” and supposedly helps you “find your shared documents faster.” Unfortunately, what it does not do is show comments and notes, making the value of iWork.com even more dubious, if that’s possible. It’s becoming more and more apparent that an online version of iWork akin to Google Docs may not be coming at all. After all, Apple has never suggested iWork.com was meant for anything more than sharing, rather a collaborative online productivity suite was just logically assumed.

Well, the new logic is even simpler, that being iWork.com is cloud storage for the iPad. With the announcement of a native version of iWork for the iPad, iWork.com makes a lot more sense. Instead of syncing with iTunes to transfer documents to your computer, you upload them to iWork.com, hopefully with an option to synchronize in the near future. Apple gets $10 for each iWork App for the iPad and gives away the online storage.

Those waiting for iWork.com to leave beta status and be useful may get the former on April 3, but don’t count on logging into iWork.com and editing documents anytime soon.

  • Fike Launches Bidirectional Explosion Diverter

Fike has introduced a bidirectional explosion diverter to enhance its range of passive explosion protection equipment. The explosion diverter – also referred to as back flash interrupter or explosion decoupler – will enable the protection of new and existing vessels to be validated using a passive device. There are 9 nominal sizes available for the Fike explosion diverter, ranging from DN100 to DN600.

Fike offers a third-party-tested and -approved non-fragmenting explosion vent certified for use on this type of device. This application requires specific testing and approval due to the demanding requirements and therefore standard explosion vents are not suitable. Fike has carried out extensive testing on the diverter at its large-scale test facilities so that application guidance is available and limitations of use are well defined.

The bulged vent ensures a smooth flow diversion; coupled with low burst pressure and inertia, the diverter will provide a low risk of flame propagation beyond the diverter. If a deflagration is allowed to propagate through a conveying line, this may cause pressure piling, rapid flame acceleration and transition to detonation if not disengaged in a timely manner. The resulting explosion could not only damage the pipeline and accessories, but also make adequate protection of downstream process equipment (e.g. dust collectors, dryers, silos) virtually impossible due to the effects of flame jet ignition and pressure piling in the receiving vessel or apparatus.

While full isolation (flame and pressure) cannot be achieved, an explosion diverter will limit the effects and control the explosion as it propagates through the pipe down to an acceptable and safe level that allows the use of other protective techniques and enables the design engineer to use standard industry codes (such as NFPA, EN and VDI) to size the protection systems on the secondary receiving vessel (and the primary vessel). Fike mechanical explosion isolation valves, chemical barriers or pneumatic explosion isolation protection valves will prevent the explosion transfer entirely.

  • The “Green” Lab is a Reality with Ductless Fume Hoods!

Reduce the energy wasted on traditional exhaust hoods.

Governmental studies have been completed regarding the high energy consumption required to heat and cool laboratories. By reducing your lab’s energy consumption you can take a step toward the ‘Green’ lab of the future, as well as put real dollars back on your bottom line.

The bulk of lab energy use is due to the high volume of heated and cooled air which is removed from the lab by traditional exhaust fume hoods. Ductless fume hoods like the AC4000 pictured at left safely eliminate toxins from the air stream and return clean air back into the laboratory space, without the need for external ducting and costly HVAC units. The overall net effect is a reduced impact on natural resources and less air pollution from energy production.

Keep the air outside your lab as clean as the air inside.

AirClean® Systems utilizes revolutionary gas phase bonded carbon filters and HEPA filters to capture toxins and particulate while exhausting no air from the laboratory space. In addition to operator protection, the environment around your building is also spared exposure to these caustic substances.

    Can your lab go green?

  • Digital High-Speed Video

WHEN IT’S TOO FAST TO SEE, AND TOO IMPORTANT NOT TO®
In-flight examination of stores separation is one of the key applications for high-speed airborne cameras. Understanding of how a store reacts when released from an aircraft allows engineers to identify any safety issues that may put the aircraft and pilot at risk, as well as provides them with the knowledge needed to develop safer, more accurate delivery systems. Digital high-speed video opens up a new dimension for analysis. Digital high-speed video gives engineers the ability to conduct even more precise and accurate measurement of the intricacies of stores separation, in which there is no room for error.
Digital high-speed cameras have advanced over the past several years to offer better resolution and detail, higher frame rates and more compact form factors. Thanks to all three, manufacturers have introduced new digital high-speed imaging systems which can be incorporated into environments never before imagined, offering a new level of precision for motion analysis that previously was unavailable. One of these new environments is on an aircraft or UAV for recording high-speed footage of stores separation. However, airborne applications present engineers with a variety of challenges that they must take into consideration when specifying a digital high-speed imaging system.

When using a digital high-speed camera for stores separation testing, it’s vital that the camera be rated for Hi-g use. Vision Research’s new Phantom® Miro™ Airborne is rated to survive accelerations up to 40gs, ensuring the unit will deliver superb digital images when recording in such an extreme environment.
