If you thought it took a long time to get to the top of the list and take delivery on a newly-assembled Ferrari supercar, that’s nothing compared to the time that has gone in to building the brand’s first theme park. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has been under construction for two years now, and is finally set to open its doors to the public sometime later this year. And when it does, it will be not only the first theme park in the region, but the first of its kind in the world.

The major attractions at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi will comprise some 20 rides, including two roller-coasters: one based on an F1 car, running at speeds at upwards of 200 kilometers per hour (125 mph) and shooting straight up through the massive scarlet roof structure 62 meters into the air.

The second is what you see pictured here, the GT Racing Coaster. That attraction will run two four-seat cars (styled after the F430 Spider) on parallel tracks in a race to the finish line. This is the first image we’ve received of the coaster car, and we can’t help but wonder why they don’t go with a 458 Italia-inspired car at this point. Follow the jump for a video on the park’s construction.

  • Complete Recovery Within a Week

real life stories stories 1 2There’s nothing like a receiving an email from a reader that chronicles their Primal journey. It makes my day. This one, from active forum member Timothy Williams, was sent in a couple months ago (and then an update last week). Timothy has seen tremendous results following the Primal Blueprint principles. Read his inspiring success story and then begin (or continue) your own. Grok on!

    Hello Mark,

Thank you for your kind email. I’m a little star-struck to be addressed in person! I want you to know that I am a huge fan of your web site, and it has radically changed my life, even though I’ve only known about it for a few weeks. Allow me to explain a bit.

I stumbled across MDA a few weeks ago on the recommendation of one of my favorite writers, Karen de Coster. I was blown away by the wealth of practical conclusions on MDA, all drawn from the simple premise that our bodies are finely tuned for an environment of evolutionary adaptedness that existed before agriculture.

I studied anthropology and early humans for many years in the context of economic and social behavior. For some reason it never occurred to me to apply the same context to nutrition. Palm on forehead, I felt like Thomas Huxley after learning about Darwin’s theory — how stupid not to have thought of that! But I guess all great ideas seem obvious in hindsight.

So I was very eager to read all I could about primal fitness and implement it immediately. I read some research on grains and couldn’t believe that it never occurred to me that the human body might have trouble digesting monocot grass seeds when it was adapted to meat and dicot plant foods, and that the USDA recommendations might have more to do with politics than nutrition. Then I read the MDA success stories and was entranced by the testimonials. I couldn’t stop until I had read them all.

Grains, it turns out, have been destroying my body for years. Since my mid-twenties I suffered with horrible intestinal symptoms, diagnosed with IBS, then ulcerative colitis, and maybe celiac disease. All I knew was that when I ate some foods such as bread, my abdomen swelled up as if I had swallowed a beach ball. The only doctor-prescribed solution that did anything for me was psyllium husk. (Needless to say, I never touch that stuff now.) Last year, my wife got pregnant and I became extremely motivated to get fit. I shed the first pounds with grueling exercise, grim determination, and replacing most of my diet with kefir, but my symptoms doggedly persisted and I did not feel well. I thought I was permanently damaged.

To make a long story short, I made a complete recovery within a week of discovering MDA. A week! After seven years of illness!

Please feel free to use anything I write on the success stories page (or anywhere else). I’m also looking forward to producing some before and after pics eventually. I’ve only been doing the PB for a few weeks, but having gone from 200 pounds a year ago to 160 now on a 5′9.5″ frame, the difference is already dramatic. I had to throw out my entire wardrobe and buy all new clothes! Everybody in my life seems amazed at my physical transformation, but only a couple have inquired about the method. I send them directly to your site, which speaks for itself.

Thanks again, Mark. I look forward to reading and implementing your crucial insights for many years to come.

    Update: 03/08/10

    Dear Mark,

About four weeks ago, you published my story and I set myself a goal of living as primally as possible and taking progress pictures. It’s been quite a month!

The black and white photo is from my wedding in 2002. The second photo is from December 2008, when I finally decided to buy a tuxedo instead of rent one because my body composition was so inert. My waist was 38″ and my weight was somewhere above 200 (I wasn’t checking). Not surprisingly, I can’t find a swimsuit photo of myself. But I think you know what moobs and an enormous belly look like.

The third picture is from late 2009, after I had launched an all-out fitness effort for about seven months. Our son was about to be born and I was really proud of what my hard work in the gym had achieved. I plateaued at 185 and a 34″ waist, and as you can see, I was feeling pretty good about it.

    August2002 December2008 September2009

Then I discovered the Primal Blueprint. I have described it as a second puberty, and better by far than winning the lottery. I hope these photos from this afternoon, demonstrating two months’ progress, will show that I am not exaggerating.

    March20101 March20102

Today I weigh 153 pounds, my waist is 30″, and my body composition is still changing rapidly.

I would like to emphasize the ways I did not achieve this transformation. I did not ask my doctor if Lipitor was right for me. I did not call 1-800-GET-SLIM. I never counted a calorie or calculated my protein-to-fat ratio. I did not hire a personal trainer to goad me, nor did I join a class to keep me consistent. I didn’t buy any exercise gadgets or meal replacements. I no longer went to the gym to perform narrowly targeted exercises under fluorescent lights.

All I did was extensively study your articles, draw inspiration from the many successful and supportive MDA forum members, and buy a sledgehammer and a pair of Vibrams. Then I did what came naturally.

When I first started the Primal Blueprint, my goal was to lose body fat and gain muscle. But that has proven only the tip of the iceberg, the most visible manifestation of a full spectrum of health benefits that have left me feeling reborn.  So I would like to share my top ten most unexpected benefits of going primal:

    1. Endless energy. Sure, I expected to feel a bit more peppy.  But I did not expect to find myself, on a whim, running shirtless for miles through winter rain after a 24-hour fast on a day I’d already exercised.
    2. Ironclad immune system. I used to get sick every couple of months.  Since going Primal I haven’t had so much as a sniffle, even as the other office workers have succumbed to winter sickness left and right.
    3. No more migraines. Who knew that my crippling migraines were a function of diet?  I never figured that out.  I thought they were due to skipping meals or not getting enough sleep.
    4. Tinnitus no longer noticeable. If you’ve ever had constant ringing in your ears, you know how annoying it can be, and how much you wish there were a way to make it stop…
    5. Mad chef skills. My whole life I resented cooking.  I didn’t mind cleaning up as my contribution towards the tedium of home-cooked meals.  But now I find that with a few simple ingredients, I can easily make things at home that are far more delicious and nutritious than the finest restaurant fare.  This has been extremely empowering.
    6. Food bills slashed. You would think that buying grass-fed, organic everything would be more expensive.  But actually I eat a lot less often, deriving far more nutrition from what I do eat, and consequently I have already saved a great deal of money on pre-cooked, unbalanced meals and snacks.  I can and often do go for a whole day without hunger after one well-planned feast.
    7. Connoisseur’s palate. Just like a man who eats nothing but spicy food fails to appreciate any other taste, so I had been blinded by my carb-centered diet to the full range of flavorful fats and proteins.  I eat all sorts of stuff now that I previously considered inedible: kimchi; sauerkraut; sardines; chicken liver.  And I realize that far from depriving myself of my favorite foods, I have discovered new favorites that are much tastier than the toxins to which I had been habituated.  When I eat a piece of fruit these days, it is a treat as stupendously delicious as it is rare: just as it was for Grok.
    8. Hormonal balance. I never realized it at the time, but my body was drowning in cortisol and insulin, and that threw off my entire hormonal balance, particularly by suppressing testosterone and HGH.  My secondary sexual characteristics (facial hair, musculature) were quite weak.  Now that the proper balance has been established, I feel the unmistakable effects of testosterone coursing through my veins.  My beard is thicker and I’m having to get used to feeling particularly confident and intense all the time.  But that’s a problem I welcome solving!
    9. Near-immunity to sunburn. Throughout my life, a half-hour’s direct sun exposure left my skin looking and feeling like it had been scalded with boiling water, and it took weeks to recover.  Now, I spend hours in the sun shirtless without even a patch of tender skin afterwards.  I can only conclude my body has become orders of magnitude better at protecting and repairing tissue.  To me, this suggests many startling implications, not least among them the prevention of cancer and senescence.
    10. Food is medicine. I never suspected that the world’s greatest medicines, the cures for almost every disease, the elixirs of strength and youth, are freely available in nature’s most delicious foods.  I used to be a ward of the medical industry, plied with expensive prescriptions and intrusive diagnostics and lectured on my blood pressure by morbidly obese doctors.  Now that my health is in my own hands, I am a free man at last.  I don’t expect to take another pharmaceutical as long as I live.

I still can’t believe it’s been only two months since I started the Primal Blueprint.  I look, feel, and think like a different human being. I feel connected as never before to the vast chain of human existence, all the way back to our early hominid ancestors. My life is now filled with a sense of adventure and possibility.

To all those thinking of giving the Blueprint a try for the first time, especially those who, like me, have grappled with health and weight issues all their lives: I eagerly invite you to join me.  For this is not the end, but only the barest beginning!

  • BlackBerry to Lose More Ground to iPhone, Android: Survey

A new survey by research firm Crowd Science brings bad news for BlackBerry maker RIM, and some good news for Apple. The company that comes out best of all, though, is Google, whose Android operating system seems poised to see some major growth in the near future.

The survey, which Crowd Science performs semi-annually, addresses smartphone brand loyalty. This time around, it found that iPhone and Android customers were well satisfied with their choice of smartphone, but that BlackBerry is hemorrhaging users badly to both of those primary competitors.

A little over 90 percent of both iPhone and Android smartphone owners plan to stay with that OS when they purchase their next device, while nearly 40 percent of BlackBerry owners said they would opt for an iPhone next time around, and 34 percent said they’d go with Android instead of a RIM device.

It’s bad news for the Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry maker, and this latest survey shows that Apple isn’t exclusively to blame for the company’s steady decline. According to Crowd Science CEO John Martin:

These results show that the restlessness of Blackberry users with their current brand hasn’t just been driven by the allure of iPhone. Rather, Blackberry as a brand just isn’t garnering the loyalty seen with other mobile operating systems.

For me, the real surprise is not that many are dissatisfied with RIM, which seems to have done very little but make incremental cosmetic upgrades with its devices over the last couple of years, but that Android is nearly matching the iPhone in terms of consumer awareness and desire.

Apple still has the advantage in terms of who its customers are and what kind of money they’re willing to spend — and on what — though. iPhone owners tend to be slightly older and more affluent, and are much more likely to buy paid applications compared to other smartphone users. Android owners skew younger and less affluent, and accordingly are much less likely to spend money on paid applications. And they do download more free apps than any other user group.

Finally, the Nexus One is making a big splash, even if it isn’t selling in droves. Android awareness in general jumped six percentage points to 66 percent since the last survey period, and 32 percent of BlackBerry owners would swap their current devices for a Nexus One right away, given the chance. That number jumps to 60 percent for users of smartphones not made by Apple or BlackBerry.

While RIM is the company that should really be scared by the results of this survey, Apple shouldn’t exactly be patting itself on the back, either. Android is making steady gains, especially among current smartphone users, and they seem to have scored a special place in the hearts of young consumers, which, when combined with the 90 percent-plus brand loyalty result, could pay off huge going forward.

  • Highly Anticipated God Of War III Now Available

God of War III is an action-adventure video game for PlayStation 3, developed by Sony Santa Monica, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released today in North America and will be released soon after in other territories. It is the fifth and final chapter in the current story arc, chronologically after God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War, God of War: Betrayal, and God of War II. The storyline will be told in a way that is true to traditionalist roots in Greek mythology, from moral consequences to brutal battles against the Gods.

However, there has been some concern that the true impact of the game might be minimized as there have been various reports of PS3 shortages around North America.

GOWIII is a single player game that allows players to take on the climatic role of the ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he scales through the intimidating heights of Mount Olympus and the dark depths of Hell to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him. Armed with double-chained blades, and an array of new weapons and magic for this iteration of the trilogy, Kratos must take on mythology’s darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest to destroy Olympus. Check out all the great God of War III guides at Playstation Lifestyle.

Utilizing a new game engine built from the ground up and state-of-the-art visual technologies, the development team behind God of War III has made standard-setting strides in giving players the realistic feel of actually being on the battlegrounds. With texture resolutions quadrupling since God of War II on PlayStation, God of War III will features fluid, lifelike characters, as well as dynamic lighting effects, a robust weapon system, and world-changing scenarios that will truly bring unmistakable realism to Kratos’ fateful quest. Players will have a chance to join battles on a grand scale that is four times larger than its predecessor. There are more realistic muscle striations, detailed facial expressions, and new heightened levels of brutality and gore.

Several of the menacing creatures of Greek mythology in God of War III can now be manipulated against their will, as Kratos uses them to cross chasms, inflict blind rage against enemies, reveal puzzles and secrets, and as tools of complete annihilation.

New deadly weapons such as the Cestus – powerful metal gauntlets with devastating strength – and other brutal instruments of war that will allow Kratos to learn ruthless new techniques such as grappling with enemies and launching explosive wall-to-ground attacks.

The dynamic lighting solution employed in GOW III is only feasible through the computing power provided by the Cell SPUs. For example, using the High Dynamic Range Lighting (HDRL) technology, the camera – when using Kratos’ sight line – will emulate the human retina, causing players to feel a sharp brightness when Kratos exits a dark area and enters a sunlit area, similar to how the human eye would need to adjust.

Destructoid gave the game a perfect 10 saying that “it’s a game that redefines scale in action games, one of the few titles that truly hammers home the meaning of ‘last-gen.’ God of War III is like nothing you’ve ever seen or experienced in gaming.” They continue to say, “without question, God of War III sets the new gold standard for action games, clearing and then raising the near-impossible bar that was set by its previous installments. For many years to come, this will be the game by which all others in the genre are compared, and I suspect we won’t see anything like it for quite some time. If God of War III was the reason you bought a PS3, your purchase has been justified and then some.”

1UP.com gave the game an A saying that “while the new ideas and variety prevent God of War 3 from feeling stale and provide loads of fun, the story and boss fights stand out as the most memorable parts of the game.” They also commented that the leviathan fight at the beginning of the game is “one of the most impressive fights” they’ve seen in a game. They even went on to say that “the animation and camera angles make the cut-scenes better than you see in most movies.”

GameInformer went on to say that the cinematic camera work is even more impressive than Naughty Dog’s feats with Uncharted 2. They also praised the gameplay, however, they said that the only area that God of War III didn’t blow them away was with the story. “The plot isn’t bad or difficult to follow, but it also doesn’t have any standout revelations or developments; Kratos hunts down the gods, kills them, and steps over the corpse to reach his next target until Olympus is in shambles. It isn’t a major problem, however, because the real joy isn’t in the events themselves, but rather in the astonishing ways those events unfold.” GameInformer gave the game a perfect 10/10.

IGN, giving the game a 9.3/10, praised the game saying that “God of War III practically redefines what the word ’scale’ means with regards to videogames, as it throws you into scenes with Titans that are larger than entire levels in some other games.” The only complaint the IGN reviewer had was “that two of the three additional weapons that you’ll earn are extremely similar to your blades. They have unique powers and slightly different moves, but by and large, they’re more of the same.” In terms of visuals, the reviewer said that “God of War III presents some of the most impressive visuals that I’ve ever seen in a game. Kratos in particular looks phenomenal, and is perhaps the single most impressive-looking character ever in videogames.”

  • A wild black bear has given birth live on internet

BBC: A now-famous wild bear has successfully given birth to a cub, an event shown live on the internet.

Lily the black bear gave birth on Friday 22 January, and mother and offspring have spent the past few days acclimatising to each other.

The birth and subsequent behaviour of the bears is being streamed live via a webcam placed in the bear’s den by biologist Professor Lynn Rogers.

This was the first live birth of a wild bear ever recorded.

Lily has become something of a celebrity in north America.

Her pregnancy has been covered by the media, and she has a Facebook page that has thousands of followers.

However, Professor Rogers has serious reasons to film Lily and her cub via the so-called “bearcam”, not least because it should provide scientists with valuable new insights into bear behaviour.

Lily underwent a labour of almost 22 hours to give birth to a single cub.

Black bears usually produce one or two cubs in their first litter, and those living alongside Lily in the woods of northern Minnesota, US often give birth to three in subsequent litters.

Lily is now insulating her cub against the cold of a heavy snow fall last night, and appears to be successfully nursing it.

“Lily has one job now, keeping her cub warm and fed. Instead of exiting the den periodically, Lily will spend the next couple months hovering over the cub,” says Professor Rogers.

  • Scientists say N.J. black bear population can’t be controlled without hunt

New Jersey Real Time News: New Jersey’s black bear population has soared to nearly 3,500, a level that can no longer be controlled solely by non-lethal methods, a wildlife biologist said today as the state Fish and Game Council adopted a management policy recommending a six-day hunt in December. The biologist, Patrick Carr, said the main reason for the growing population is the abundance of food state residents willingly and unwillingly provide. The result, he said, is that the bruins are living longer and giving birth to more cubs than bears in other parts of the country.

Carr said that in New Jersey, black bears start to breed when they are 2 or 3 years old. In other parts of the country, the age is 4 or 5, he said. Litters are larger, too, with bears in New Jersey averaging three cubs per litter compared to two cubs per litter for bears living in national parks elsewhere.

And bears in New Jersey are living longer; the oldest female tracked in New Jersey is 26 years old. Because of their favorable living conditions, adult survival rate is “extremely high,” with 86 percent of adult bears surviving each year and 70 percent of cubs surviving their first year, Carr said.

“They’re not food-stressed because we have such a diverse habitat so the cubs are getting tremendous resources, which is increasing their survival rate,” he said.

Though bears have been sited in all 21 counties in New Jersey, the highest concentration is in the northwestern corner of the state, north of Route 80 and west of Route 287, said David Chanda, director of the state Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Somewhat resembling just about every other supercar out there in one detail or another, the styling has charitably been described as everything from derivative to kit car-ish. Shelby Supercars wants to do something about that. Now that they’ve proven they can get their car up to its claimed top speed of over 255 mph, the next step is to get a few more of them out the showroom doors. To that end, the company is said to be courting supercar designer Jason Castriota to pen a fresh look.

Jerod Shelby, the “Shelby” in “Shelby Supercars,” has apparently tapped Castriota to design SSC’s next generation hypercar. If Castriota’s name sounds familiar, and even if it doesn’t, he is the designer of record behind the Pininfarina P4/5, the Bertone Mantide (shown above) the neo Maserati Birdcage and the Rolls-Royce Hyperion. Having recently left his post at Bertone, Jason will become the exclusive designer for SSC’s next two cars and will add a degree of credibility to the team, or at least that’s the plan. According to the Tri-City Herald, the cars will actually be badged with his name to hammer home that point.

While the new Aeros will carry a price tag double the current cars’ at $800,000 to $900,000, the company says it will also develop a “little brother version” that will retail for just $300,000. Production targets are a dozen or so Aeros and about 50 Aero-lites per annum. The cars might also show up in a reality TV series that is being pitched to chronicle the project.

  • Charmed by black bears

BBC: When programme maker Ted Oakes went to the Northwoods of Minnesota to film black bears, he had no idea that he would have such an intimate encounter.

Ted filmed the bears with the help of biologist Dr Lynn Rogers. As black bears spend most of their time deep in the forests, researchers have only been able to study them by radio tracking their movements. Lynn did this for 25 years before he decided to take a different approach. He learned how to gain the bears’ trust so that they allowed him to follow them. The bears have come to ignore Lynn’s presence and he has been able to study their natural behaviour.

The researchers working with Lynn follow a strict protocol when following the study bears in Minnesota. They can feed a bear a small amount of natural food when they meet it. They have to greet the bear and it has to know who they are. The bear will then often accept their presence for most of the day.
