  • Simon Singh Stops Writing His Column To Focus On Fighting ‘Bogus’ Libel Suit

We’ve written before about the libel fight that Simon Singh is fighting in the UK, where the British Chiropractic Assocation sued him for libel for saying that some of the things that the BCA claimed chiropractors could do were “bogus.” Singh, who has a PhD. and has written numerous books about science, was pointing out that the BCA was making claims that had little scientific evidence to back them up — hence “bogus.” Tragically a court focused on the use of that word, suggesting that Singh meant the BCA had engaged in deliberate dishonesty, rather than just aggressive marketing. Because of the amount of time and resources it is taking him to fight this, Singh is now giving up his column in The Guardian, noting just how damaging a ridiculous libel lawsuit can be on individuals.

The only good news out of this is that the lawsuit against Singh has brought about two important forms of backlash:

    1. A large group of concerned citizens online have actively been debunking claims from the BCA, and getting official investigations started of any chiropractor that makes bogus (yes, bogus) claims about what chiropractors can cure.
    2. Singh’s case has become a focal point in a new, much-needed, effort in the UK to reform libel laws in that country — where existing laws effectively put the burden on the accused to prove that they didn’t libel the other party.

It’s awful to see Singh have to go through all of this, but hopefully his sacrifices will mean others won’t have to face the same issue down the road.

  • Should The Gold Market Fear The US Dumping Its Gold To Pay Down Debt?

    Ha!

The answer to that question is a resounding no.

Alex Kirtland of Usable Markets posted this chart showing US gold holdings in relation to US debt.

As you can see, the idea of selling gold to pay off any meaningful amount of debt would be a joke.

    gold

That being said, gold traders do apparently fear euro gold sales, as French and German leaders plan a new EMF to pay for future bailouts. This is something Dennis Gartman has brought up recently.

That, along with the risk trade, is why gold’s been such a dog lately. (send hatemail to [email protected])

  • Now Everyone’s Freaking Out About A Huge Junk-Bond Refinancing “Cliff” In 2012

    tidal wave surf surfers surfing

The new worry, courtesy of the New York Times, is that we’re going to be killed by a huge junk-bond refinancing wave starting in 2012, when all those awful private-equity deals that topped the market start coming due.

2012 seems like a ways away, though, and the entire refinancing total over the following three years–$700 billion–is less than the TARP (ignoring the additional $2 trillion the US government will need).  Martin Fridson, for one, thinks companies have plenty of time to refinance between now and then.

But we suppose if there’s suddenly nothing else to worry about, this is as good an obsession as any.

    Nelson Schwartz, NYT:

2012 also is the beginning of a three-year period in which more than $700 billion in risky, high-yield corporate debt begins to come due, an extraordinary surge that some analysts fear could create a glut in the debt markets.

With huge bills about to hit corporations and the federal government around the same time, the worry is that some companies will have trouble getting new loans, spurring defaults and a wave of bankruptcies.

The United States government alone will need to borrow nearly $2 trillion in 2012, to bridge the projected budget deficit for that year and to refinance existing debt.

  • Expanded Servo Reducer Range

ATLANTA Drive Systems, Inc. is pleased to announce the expanded range of Servo Worm Reducers, now offering four levels of precision to meet any application requirements. Building on the popular High-Performance (HP) Servo-Worm Reducer product, Atlanta has added a High-Torque, Economy and Basic version to complete the range.

The High-Torque (HT) version offers 150% the torque capacity of the standard Servo-Worm Reducer, while reducing the backlash level to less than one arc-minute. The output was also redesigned for increased bearing capacity and an option for flanged connections based on ISO 9409.

The Economy (E-Servo) version offers the same torque capacity as the standard Servo-Worm Reducer, with a backlash level of less than six arc-minutes. A simplified housing and assembly allows for significant price savings. The Basic (B-Servo) version offers 90% the torque capacity of the standard Servo-Worm Reducer, with a backlash level of less than twelve arc-minutes.

The four levels of precision available allows a machine designer to select the required reducer precision to meet their needs and their budget. A wide range of motor couplings and mounting flanges are available for the complete reducer range to mount virtually any servo motor and the hollow bore output can be used to mount output shafts, pinion shafts, or other drive elements.

Typical applications for these reducers include rotary axis drives, traveling gantries & columns, and material handling axis drives. Industries served include Material Handling, Automation, Aerospace, Woodworking, Machine Tool and Robotics.

  • NEW! Switch-mode power supply SNT5024

The switch-mode power supplies of the SNT5024 series are powerful and robust devices to power sensitive loads in a hard industrial environment.

These features result from the modern construction with a good radio shielding and high reliability integrated in a functional and stable casing.
The short circuit proof output DC voltage of this model can be adjusted from 22.5 to 30.0 V. This power supply is optimally suited for loads requiring high starting currents.

    Functional principle
In the power supply SNT5024 a flyback converter operates to transform the energy in two steps.

During the conducting phase the diode is blocking, the inductor is energized and a magnetic field establishes. There is no electrical transmission; the consumer load is supplied with energy from the capacitor.
When the switching transistor opens, the blocking phase begins. The current in the inductor cannot change immediately, discharges through the diode and a negative voltage establishes atthe inductor.

Now operating like a power source the inductor reloads the capacitorand supplies the consumerwith energy. The energy flows from the inductor into the capacitor and the consumer and through the conducting diode back to the inductor.

    Design
Completly embedded with resin in an aluminium housing for mounting on a rail or wall mounting with screws.

Abt Sportline R8 Spyder – Click above for high-res image gallery

Whenever Audi introduces a new model, chances are that the folks at Abt Sportsline are going to get their hands on one. The German company has been tuning Volkswagens and Audis since the 1970s and has enjoyed success racing the Audi A4 in DTM and more recently the new R8 LMS. Needless to say, Abt knows how to properly modify cars bearing the four rings.

Abt’s latest project is the droptop version of the Audi R8. Visually the car gets a new front grille, front fascia with carbon fiber spoiler, side sills, rear fascia, rear spoiler and lightweight five-spoke wheels. Even more importantly, the 5.2-liter V10 has been massaged to provide 600 horsepower, good for 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph. Finally, Abt provides a sport suspension system for improved handling. Follow the jump for full details and browse through the high-res gallery below.
