  • Happy 25th, Dotcom!!!

Today, an internet milestone is reached with the 25th anniversary of the day the first dotcom website was registered. Back in March 1985, Symbolics computers in Cambridge, Massachusetts made history with an internet address ending in dotcom. Later that year, another five companies followed suit, effectively setting the very slow trend moving. It wasn’t until 1997 that the one millionth dotcom was registered.

Mark Mclaughlin, chief executive officer of Verisign- the company that is responsible for looking after the dotcom domain- was quoted as saying, “Who would have guessed 25 years ago where the internet would be today. This really was a groundbreaking event.” It’s even more surprising because of the fact that for most of the late 1980s and early 1990s, very few people even knew what a dotcom was. The exact genesis of the dotcom name is unknown, but it certainly arrived at a time when there was a need for some sort of organising principles, as more bodies connected to the fledgling internet.

The early internet was not at all seen as a place for commerce as it is now, but was mainly used as a means for governmental and educational bodies to trade ideas. There’s general agreement that a turning point occured with the introduction of the Mosaic web browser by Netscape. This allowed mainstream consumers on to the web. And now, with 668,000 dotcom sites registered every month, they have become part of the fabric of our lives.

25 years after their creation, people go to dotcom sites for shopping, entertainment, vacation planning, connecting with friends, learning new things and exchanging ideas. The dotcoms have enjoyed an impressive growth rate that would have been very difficult to predict 25 years ago, when a small computer firm took the first steps towards connecting the world. The world of mobile tech had a complete halt for Microsoft to release more information on WP7S, and with those released came a new developer kit. The kit contained many things, and most notable, a WP7S emulator. The emulator is made for developers to see how the OS works and how the phone will work with their apps.

Neowin, has used the information and developer tool to create a demo video for the new browser. The video is not very detailed, but shows you the main functions and performance of the new browser.

  • Selling 1,000 Portraits And Building A Ton Of Goodwill Not Good Business?

Michel Gondry spoke at SXSW to a packed house; it was fantastic to see one of my favorite directors speak about his creative process. During the talk, he mentioned a project he did where fans could buy portraits of themselves, sketched by Gondry himself, for only $20. He did about 1,000 of these portraits before he ended the deal, saying that while some portraits took only 2 minutes, he started getting fancier and fancier as time progressed, and eventually he didn’t think that was a good business to continue it. When he said that, a collective, sad sigh was felt across the conference room, since I’m sure I was not the only one in the room who wanted a hand-drawn Michel Gondry portrait — and if $20 wasn’t the right price to make sense, business-wise, surely there was an appropriate price point that would make sense (and, in looking at his site, it appears that he raised the price to $99.95 with a copy of his DVD). Now, while it is true that Gondry is a famous movie director, surely a few hundred dollars for minutes of work is enough to get him interested, especially when he considers that this portrait further serves to endear him more to his most passionate fans, who are incredibly appreciative that he would ever even think to offer such a deal:

It’s amazing enough that Michel has the time to draw thousands of portraits a week amidst his incredibly busy schedule and his “Green Hornet” workload. Hopefully this commitment will urge other filmmakers to devote similar generosity towards their fanbases…

So, contrary to what Gondry thought, his portrait offer most certainly made good business sense and was a great example of an RtB deal, since it was soaked in his charmingly quirky artistic personality. Then again, perhaps another example of Gondry’s unique understanding of the business world is with this strange notice that he sent out to the purchasers of the portraits, sometimes well after they had purchased the image, telling them they could not resell the image ever.

“By placing your sketch order, you hereby acknowledge… that the sketch is for your personal use only and you shall not have the right to sell the sketch for any commercial purpose whatsoever.”

To ask this of his truest fans (especially after they have commissioned a sketch) is not only most likely unenforceable legally (case law here is still a bit messy, but courts have said that you can’t just give up your right of first sale based on one side’s declaration), it also serves to sour the goodwill and affection that Gondry’s true fans have bestowed upon him. Now, that’s bad business.

  • A Life Bus in Pictures: The Volkswagen Type 2 turns 60

Volkswagen Type 2 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Many automakers will build cars for decades and never create a product that can truly be considered a cultural icon. Few that do produce multiple such models. One of those is Volkswagen. The original Beetle/Bug/Type 1 is recognizable almost anywhere and even by people that know nothing about cars. The Beetle itself spawned another icon in the form of the Type 2 (or Microbus), a vehicle that is celebrating its diamond anniversary in 2010.

Like the original Bug, the Microbus had an air-cooled flat-four cylinder engine hanging off the back of the rear axle. The front seats were moved up over the front axle creating a format that was eventually copied by Ford, Dodge, General Motors and countless Japanese automakers.

Over sixty years, the bus became the ride of choice for surfers, hippies and iconoclasts everywhere. Many surviving examples from the 1960s are still hauling surfboards and Deadheads today. In the 1980s, the third-generation bus morphed into the still-loved but less iconic Vanagon, with emissions standards forcing the adoption of water cooling in 1983. The last of the rear-engined VW vans ceased production in 1992. A tip of the hat to Brooks!

  • Is Another Chinese Reserve Rate Hike Coming Tonight?

    zhou china chinese

Will the Chinese hike reserves again in the next few hours?

Obviously only a select few in Beijing know for sure, but it wouldn’t be a surprise.

All of the People’s Congress stuff is over, so that’s out of the way. And the National Statistics Bureau was supposed to release Fixed Asset numbers yesterday, but they were delayed for a day.

Now would be the perfect time: release the data, and tell banks to press on the break pedals once again.

Consider, too, that the last few reserve hikes came mid-month (Jan 12 and Feb 12), so the timing would consistent with prior moves.

Andrew Barber of Waverly Advisors suggests that if anything one is coming out in the next few days, at a minimum. Morgan Stanley  out with a note predicting one imminently as well.

    Stay tuned…

  • HTC HD2 WP7S Upgrade finally put to rest

    image

We can finally throw away all the news and speculations to the trash, the HD2 is now confirmed to not get an update. This comes from Microsoft themselves, during the MIX show, Pocketnow had a chance to talk with the people representing Microsoft. The interview seems to have included word about the HTC HD2’s upgradability, and once again, they are sticking to their requirements.

It seems Microsoft is being very true to their next generation OS requirements. While many might find this as them being plain bad, I have a different thought on this.

I think by Microsoft not feeding into this pressure they must be getting from not only HD2 owners, but HTC them selves, shows their commitment. They seem very committed to keeping the exact  user experience through out the devices that will feature this revolutionary OS.

This is most likely going to make a lot of user unhappy, and I will say what I said last time. The HD2 is a great device, I have never seen anything better in the Market, even though I have used over 10 new devices in the last 4 months including the Droid, Pre Plus, Omnia2, and more. If you have been waiting for this confirmation to buy the HD2, ill tell you to go ahead and make that order for the best device you will ever use this month :D .

  • Toyota’s troubles hurting Lexus’ relationships with customers

Though not as severely as that of Toyota, Lexus’ standing with consumers has diminished considerably in the past two months, according to market researchers.

BrandIndex Service, a New York based agency that surveys consumer brand perceptions, has said that Lexus quality reputation is at the lowest it has ever been. “Lexus spent 2009 either neck and neck or slightly ahead of luxury rival BMW in quality scores,” said Drew Kerr, a BrandIndex spokesman. “The game changed in early February, when the Toyota news exploded and Lexus began descending significantly.”

Of the more than 6 million Toyota vehicles that have recently been recalled, 450,000 have been Lexus brand. Unlike Toyota, however, Lexus has seen a sales increase of 5% this year, though this is attributed to an expanded lineup. Too offset that statistic though, consider that Lexus has been the luxury leader in sale ssince 2000, and that this year Mercedes is up 24% while BMW is up 12%.

Lexus is confident that their ability to differentiate themselves from Toyota will be a successful move in regaining confidence.

  • USF1 reportedly still holding out hope for 2011

    Filed under:

Easy come, easy go. Only it was anything but an easy arrival for USF1, the highly anticipated and much-hyped American grand prix team that was slated to hit the grid this past weekend for the start of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. And in the end, much as Bernie Ecclestone predicted, the team failed to make it.

FIA president Jean Todt had dispatched his technical chief Charlie Whiting to assess where things stood at USF1 headquarters in South Carolina, and reported back on the construction of several cars at the factory. As it turns out, that wasn’t enough to get them to the starting grid and joining Virgin, Lotus and HRT which did.

According to reports, USF1’s management is still holding out hope that they could join the grid for next season. In order to do so, they’d have to retain a workforce that largely blames the team’s two principals – Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson – for misleading and mismanaging the team’s entry, re-apply through a selection process which the FIA intends to re-open for next season, and face possibly penalties from its World Motor Sports Council.

  • Band ‘Releases’ New Album Via Chatroulette

By now you’ve probably heard of the latest internet fad, Chatroulette, which has been pretty much covered to death in the media (though, not us, until now). If, by some amazing chance, you’ve missed out on this, the best summary would probably be Jon Stewart’s amusing take on it:

    Tech-Talch – Chatroulette

    Daily Show

    Political Humor Health Care Reform

However, the reason we’re mentioning it here is that Mathew Ingram alerts us to the news that a band going by the rather catchy name of Holy Fuck has decided to leak its new album via Chatroulette. Of course, since Chatroulette is totally random, there’s no way to actually find it, except by accident — meaning you’re not going to find it, and as the reporter at the link above discovered, you have a pretty high likelihood of running into something that might disgust you. Still, an amusing marketing gimmick all around.

  • Report: Saab pondering tech partnership with Germans, picks GMAC as official financer

2010 Saab 9-3X – Click above for high-res image gallery

While newly emancipated Saab has some fresh product in its near-term pipeline, it’s fair to say that the biggest challenge for the Swedish automaker over the long haul will be the development of costly new technologies and platforms. To that end, Spyker CEO Victor Muller has let slip to Automotive News Europe that Saab is actively looking at technology sharing arrangements with other OEMs – and they aren’t just looking in former parent General Motors‘ direction.

More to the point, Muller says that Saab has already been contacted by around a half-dozen OEMS, including “some German brands,” although the unnamed Deutsch companies are said to exclude Volkswagen and Audi. Saab presently has production and intellectual property agreements in place with GM to keep fresh product flowing through the rollout of its next-generation 9-3 in 2012, but after that line launches, it could receive parts developed from outside partners, including things like new powertrains, and potentially down the road, platforms.

In other company news, GMAC has been selected as the preferred source of financing for Saab franchises, providing a bit of continuity to the company’s dealer base, as GMAC was also a major source of new car financing under GM. You can read the official announcement after the jump and check out our newly expanded gallery of the soon-to-launch 9-3X below.

  • Sony’s New Digital Wireless RF Headphone Is Hot And Heavy

Sony Europe is showing off a new digital wireless RF headphone called the MDR-RF4000 with 30 meter range and high quality sound. These piano black headphones are rather large, but are quite comfortable thanks in part to the swivel circumaural cushions and a parallel-link self-adjusting headband. This ensures comfort for your listening experience, even for long durations of time. However, they seem a little heavy at 300g, which is .6 pounds.

There is also a handy volume control on the headphone so you don’t have to bother reaching for the remote. Digital RF transmission ensures clear, secure signal reception over a range of up to 30m. The headphone’s closed-type design cuts sound spillage, so there’s no need to disturb others while you’re enjoying the action packed finale of a favorite movie.

The MDR-RF4000K also comes with a stylish storage/charging dock that goes along well with their usual minimalistic design principles. The slim, convenient storage case doubles as a cable-free battery charger. After use, just fold the ear cups flat and the MDR-RF4000K stows neatly away while the battery recharges.

The power-efficient design allows up to 7 hours continuous listening time between charges of the NiMH battery. Alternatively, slip in a single AAA alkaline battery and enjoy up to 10 hours listening without a break. An auto power-save feature switches off the headphone when it’s not being used, extending listening time still further.

  • Video: Hennessey Venom GT teased, set to debut on March 30th

John Hennessey’s much-anticipated Venom GT was scheduled to make its debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show but we guess they realized it would be overlooked by the million of Geneva debuts. The model will now make its world-debut on March 30th (hopefully it’ll be at the 2010 New York Auto Show) and we’re eagerly anticipating its first public appearance.

The new Hennessey Venom GT is built on a stretched Exige platform, which is nearly two feet longer in length and nearly a foot in width. Power for the Venom GT comes from an upgraded LS9 from the Corvette ZR1 making 750-hp. If that’s not enough for you, Hennessey is also offering a twin-turbocharged LS9 producing 1,000-hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque in street spec and 1,200-hp in full-race spec. Power is sent to the rear-wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.

Weighing in at just 2,395 lbs, the 1,000-hp model goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds with a top speed of 262 mph.

If you’re not excited for March 30th by now, then we don’t know what’s going to get you pumped.

Prices for the Venom GT are expected to start at $600,000 for the base model. The 1,200-hp model will run you $725,000.

  • Who are the world’s biggest polluters? Carnegie Institution takes a look

    Image: Carnegie Institution for Science

    Image: Carnegie Institution for Science

    From Green Right Now Reports

Assessments of which nations are the world’s biggest polluters can be deceiving. A study by the Carnegie Institution for Science has determined that over a third of carbon dioxide emissions stemming from the consumption of goods and services in developed countries are actually released outside their borders.

For instance, if Americans buy goods produced in China, they are effectively “outsourcing” the carbon footprint while not technically doing the polluting on home soil.

According to the study, about 2.5 tons of carbon per person are consumed in the U.S. but produced elsewhere. Europeans, on average, top four tons per person.

“Instead of looking at carbon dioxide emissions only in terms of what is released inside our borders, we also looked at the amount of carbon dioxide released during the production of the things that we consume,” says co-author Ken Caldeira, a researcher in the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology.

The study used 2004 data to create a model of the flow of products across 57 industry sectors and 113 countries or regions. Researchers calculated the net emissions “imported” or “exported” by specific countries.

“Just like the electricity that you use in your home probably causes CO2 emissions at a coal-burning power plant somewhere else, we found that the products imported by the developed countries of western Europe, Japan, and the United States cause substantial emissions in other countries, especially China,” lead author Steven Davis said. “On the flip side, nearly a quarter of the emissions produced in China are ultimately exported.”

Some European nations generally not thought of as major offenders come off looking a bit less “green” in the report, which claims that over a third of carbon dioxide emissions linked to goods and services consumed in many of those countries actually occurred elsewhere. Switzerland, for one, outsourced emissions that exceeded the amount of carbon dioxide produced within national borders.

The United States is both a major importer and a major exporter of trade-based emissions. The net result is that the U.S. outsources about 11 percent of total consumption-based emissions, primarily to the developing world.

  • Movie Producer Sues Variety Over Bad Review

This is becoming all too common. We recently wrote about the lawyer who sued a publisher over a negative review of her book. Apparently, this sort of thing is becoming more common. The producer of an independent movie called Iron Cross, Joshua Newton, is suing Variety for posting a negative review of his movie after he bought a huge advertising spread from the magazine. In trying to defend the lawsuit, Newton lays out how Variety courted him over a huge advertising deal, suggesting the magazine would help find the film a distributor and also get it into consideration for the Oscars. Of course, nothing in that meant that the magazine’s reviews should be compromised. Newton’s argument isn’t exactly going to win him much support:

I’m not suing them over a bad review. The problem we had was the timing. Robert Koehler, the critic, could have put it on his own website. If he’d have written it for TheWrap it would have just been one of those things. The problem was that Variety should have waited until the campaign was over. They completely destroyed the campaign that they sold us.

Basically, he seems to be suggesting that because he bought hundreds of thousands of ads from Variety, the magazine isn’t allowed to post an honest review of the flick. Fascinating.

Newton, by the way, goes on to suggest that the business side at Variety knows it made a mistake, and that the recent firings of Variety’s in-house movie critics is to more easily “control” movie reviews, so that Variety doesn’t run reviews that trash movies that have paid lots of money to advertise with Variety. If true, of course, that would basically destroy whatever credibility Variety has left. Even so, though, suing over a bad movie review — just because you bought ads in the magazine — doesn’t make much sense.
