Following the unveiling of the TAG Heuer Roadster Sport at the Geneva Motor Show last week, Tesla has released a large batch of new photos of the one-off electric sports car. The new shots show the car, which was prepared to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Swiss watchmaker, out on the road.

Following the close of the Geneva Motor Show this weekend, the Roadster will be driven the 155 miles to Basel for the big watch show that starts there next week. (At Baselworld, TAG Heuer will unveil a new concept timepiece.) Mechanically, there’s nothing really new about the Roadster Sport, but for those of you that can’t get enough images of the two-tone Roadster, check out our newly-expanded high-res gallery.

  • Pantastic!

The Holy World Tour has excelled itself this time!

In this case Jesus couldn’t save Toby’s bacon, but possibly saved his life.

English lad, Toby Elles, 22, quaffed quite a few ales and decided to fry up some bacon. He fell asleep on the couch and woke up from his alcoholic stupor to a smoke-filled room.

Naturally he doused the pan with cold water. (I do that)

Naturally he waited another day before attempting to clean the pan. (I do that too)

Naturally he smartened himself up and put on his best clobber, tie included, before calling the photographers. (I should do that)

I have a bone to pick with Jesus. Is this the best he can do?

With obscene wars, devastating earthquakes and all the absolutely horrible things people endure on a daily basis, he shows up in a drunken Englishman’s frying pan. Why?

Does Jesus, in his down time, have nothing better to do than emboss his face on burned toast, potato chips, spaghetti stains, griller grunge and frying pans

On a closer inspection I take back my words. That’s not Jesus at all!

    It’s Jim Morrison!

Look carefully at that frying pan and you too will see what I see. You don’t need to be inebriated either.

Poor old Jim, I can just see him devoting his afterlife to saving drunken young men – English or otherwise.

Lotus Cosworth KV Racing IndyCar rendering – Click above for high-res image gallery

Lotus is officially returning to the IndyCar series in 2010 in partnership with engine builder Cosworth and KV Racing. Lotus, as you well know, has a long history with Indy-style open-wheel racing, dating back to the early 1960s. Its exploits include a victory by Jim Clark in 1965 and the all-wheel-drive, turbine-powered cars that arrived a few years later.

A few weeks ago, Lotus announced a revival of its cooperation with Cosworth for both road and race cars. The new collaboration with KV is described as being both technical and commercial. It’s not clear at this point what Cosworth will contribute from a technical perspective, since all the current IndyCars run Honda V8s. Perhaps KV will provide a platform upon which Cosworth can test and develop a new engine for the next-generation IndyCar regulations that are in the works.

The green and yellow Lotus/Cosworth-badged car will debut in two weeks at the St. Petersburg, Florida race with ex-Honda F1 pilot Takuma Sato at the controls.

  • RIGHTS-MALAWI: Country Not Safe for Homosexuals

By Claire Ngozo LILONGWE, Mar. 13 (IPS) Malawi is quickly becoming unsafe for homosexuals as the country’s police service recently launched a campaign to hunt down and arrest prominent people who are suspected of being gay.

The police service claim to be investigating issues related to ‘homosexual tendencies’ as homosexuality is against the law in Malawi.

The hunt follows the traditional engagement ceremony of two men, Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, which took place in the country’s commercial capital, Blantyre, on Boxing Day. The couple was arrested two days after their union and have since been in custody as they await trial.

"We launched investigations because we have information that there are prominent people behind Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza," said Dave Chingwalu, the police spokesman for Malawi’s southern region.

Top members of society including members of parliament, priests and academics are suspects in the investigation, according to Chingwalu. The police have not divulged names of the people that are being targeted in the investigation.

The southern African country has in recent months become more homophobic. On Feb. 9, Davis Mpanda, 29, was given a 10-year prison sentence after being found guilty of buggery. Sections 153 and 156 of the Penal Code criminalise homosexuality and anyone convicted under these sections may be jailed for a minimum of five years and maximum of 14 years.

Magistrate Diana Mangwana of South Lunzu Magistrate’s Court, in Blantyre convicted Mpanda together with his partner, a 15-year-old boy. (The age of consent and for marriage in Malawi is 15 years.) The boy told the magistrate that he consented to having sex with Mpanda five times.

The court set the boy free, saying his punishment would be "the psychological trauma he will live with for the rest of his life".

"These offences are against Malawi’s moral values. The convict is an abuser because what he did to the juvenile is sexual corruption. He took advantage of the boy to please his own unnatural desires," Mangwana stated in her court ruling.

Another person who has fallen victim to Malawi’s anti-gay stand is Peter Sawali, 21. On Feb. 8, he was convicted and sentenced to two weeks community service by the Blantyre magistrates’ court for mounting posters promoting gay rights along the commercial capital’s main road, the Masauko Chipembere Highway.

"Sawali was found guilty of conduct likely to cause breach of peace," said Beatrice Mwachande, the police spokesperson for Blantyre.

Sixty-year-old Tony Chirwa was arrested on Feb. 19 after being accused of sodomising a 23-year-old man. Chirwa is in police custody.

A top government official has also expressed her disdain against homosexuality. Minister of Gender, Child and Community Development Patricia Kaliati, on Jan. 19 did not take kindly to a court decision which saw a suspected lesbian being set free by a magistrate court in Malawi’s tea-growing district of Mulanje.

Nellie Somanje of Mulanje, where Kaliati is a member of parliament, was found not guilty by the court after being accused of "having carnal knowledge of two girls" aged 15 and 18 who she employed.

Mulanje Second Grade Magistrate, Lameck Mkwapatira, indicated in his judgement that he acquitted Somanje because there was lack of evidence against her and that the girls had told the court that they had consented to the sexual relationship.

However, Kaliati accused the magistrate of promoting homosexuality and "setting a bad precedence" for the country. The minister told the local media that she has banished Somanje from the area and has since sent her to her "district of origin", Mangochi, on Lake Malawi’s shores.

Rights organisations are concerned about the apparent targeting of homosexuals. The hunt for gay people will only prompt this "vulnerable group" to go underground, according to Gift Trapense, director of human rights organisation the Centre for the Development of People.

Trapense told IPS that the HIV prevalence rate among men who have sex with other men is "very high" at 21.4 percent. The prevalence rate for the country is 12 percent. "It is already an issue of concern that they are under great threat from HIV. The hunt that the police have set up is a total violation of human rights as they are denying gay people the right to live freely," said Trapense. "They're going too far by hunting gay people down."

Meanwhile, the country awaits the fate of the now-prominent couple, Monjeza and Chimbalanga. Blantyre chief resident magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa Usiwa has set Mar. 22 as the day he will deliver his ruling on the matter. The case has attracted a lot of interest both within Malawi and internationally.

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and some British members of parliament have since condemned the treatment of gay people in Malawi. After their arrest, the couple was subjected to a mental examination and other medical tests.

The government of Norway, one of Malawi's donor countries, warned the government of Malawi to respect gay rights or risk tainting its human rights record.

"We have noted that Malawi has made a lot of progress in terms of human rights but there is specific concern on the continued segregation of the gay community," Norwegian Minister of International Development Erik Solheim told a news conference. Solheim was on a short visit to Malawi.

"Globally, the gay issue is not only about human rights but also the protection of minorities like homosexuals. The state should never harm the basic rights of individuals," said Solheim.

The country’s famous gay couple have since had their efforts to challenge the trial in the magistrates’ court thwarted. Lawyers representing Chimbalanga and Monjeza had asked the constitutional court to take a position on the matter. They were arguing that the Penal Code that was used to arrest the pair violates their constitutional rights to privacy, dignity, belief, conscience and self expression.

But the country’s chief justice, Lovemore Munlo, threw out the application on the basis of legal technicalities. Munlo stated in his ruling that the application by the couple’s lawyers lacked clarity on the proceedings that the constitutional court was expected to certify on.

  • Don’t Waste the Internet on TV – Protect the Future of the Internet

I had a very enjoyable debate with Avner Rosen of Boxee yesterday at SXSW.  We tended to go around in circles defending our positions. His (to paraphase): the internet will do what cable and satellite do, but it will do it better. That MicroSoft and Apple among others will in the future come up with new ways to do it all better than we can now.

Mine: Of course the internet can support video, but it cant do it as well as the current digital cable and satellite distributors can, nor is there a profit model that would ever incent content providers to switch their content from the internet to TV.

I wont rehash it all here, but the most salient comment came from the audience when someone asked “Whats the difference if the gatekeeper MicroSoft/Google/Apple rather than Comcast/Time Warner/Directv/Dish ?”

Of course the questioner was right.

Bits are bits . The economics of content are going to search for the best place to be monetized, regardless of the delivery platform.  I think the current model will be the place content finds, Avner seemed to feel it would be some future internet.

    It shouldn’t matter.

We both seemed to agree that one of the biggest future changes for the internet will be an increase in bandwidth. The question the needs to be answered is “how will all the new bandwidth, both on the backbone and in the last mile be used ?”

Will it be used for digital video content, ie, TV ? Why would we want it to be used for TV ?

The internet has the opportunity to continue to be transformative. There are applications out there that can change the quality of our lives.  Im not talking about the ability to update your facebook, or check out what where everyone is at on 4Square and twitpic what is happening to your friends and followers. Social Media is one more amazing communication platform that is impacting our lives. But its not tranformative.

There will be transformative applications that need all the bandwidth they can get. Medical, Transportation, Defense, Gaming, Simulations and who knows what. As computers become more powerful, we need to be able to send more data to the cloud where they can crunch data and return it to us.

That is the value of an open internet. The things we cant imagine today. The applications that are just dreams because  they dont have enough horsepower and bandwidth to work today. I want the internet to be a platform for amazing. Not Gilligan’s Island reruns.

I recognize that with openness comes the risk of the least common denominator dominating.  Porn has just as much right to dominate the net as any other app. But should it ?

Yes it should. The lesson of TV over the internet vs TV over digital cable or satellite isnt about openness. Its about the value of Application Specific Networks. DIgital CAble is an application specific network. Its only job is to serve up content and it works very well.

The FCC needs to recognize this and start working with internet broadband providers to define tunnels,  Private Virtual Networks  or just plain reserved bandwidth that are saved for future applications. When a transformative application presents itself, there should be an opportunity to define the network to optimize that application.

In the event some form of ubiquitous entertainment comes first ,  takes over the net and saturates it, how is the FCC going to solve the bandwidth traffic jam ? They wont ever be able to put the bandwidth genie back in the bottle. Screaming at broadband providers to spend the money wont work any better than screaming to expand highways helps to alleviate rush hour traffic

The FCC wants Internet 2 at universities to flourish and develop new things. But where are they going to roll them out to if all of our bandwidth to the home is being used for some new form of 3D virtual fantasy sports?

I just dont think these things will just manage to take care of themselves.  The reality is that when we run into future internet application roadblocks our politicians will jump in the mix and attempt to “solve” the problems. You know where that will get us.

We need to start the process now of putting some bandwidth to the home away for a rainy day. Not only do we need to preserve bandwidth in the last mile, but the FCC also needs to  figure out a way to create a transparent market or exchange that allows competing applications a means of knowing how and when they will have access to bandwidth when, not if,  it becomes constrained.

And if you really want to make things interesting, the company that is doing the most work on realtime markets and competing for resources that i know of ? ….. Google.

Deal with it today or struggle with it in the future.

The next stage of Kia’s transformation from design also-ran to serious contender will kick off at the New York Auto Show in few weeks. After launching the Forte sedan and Koup, the new Sorento and, most recently, the Sportage, Kia’s new design language is being applied to the Optima. The all-new 2011 Kia Optima is longer, wider and lower than the car it replaces although we don’t know by how much. While it’s not as aggressive as the sketches released a few weeks ago, this Optima is certainly a huge step forward.

We don’t have any mechanical details yet, but we’d guess that the Optima shares a lot under the skin with the new Hyundai Sonata. Nor would we be at all surprised to learn that the Optima won’t have a V6 engine option this time around. Instead, it’ll probably use the same direct-injected 2.4-liter inline-four found in the Sonata. The turbocharged and hybrid variants may follow as well.

  • A Quick Reminder: Here’s The Real Problem

Here’s one of the only economic charts that really matters: Total U.S. debt to GDP (from John Mauldin).

This chart shows the trend from the end of the Civil War until now.

    US Debt To GDP

    Note two things:

    • There may be a general upward trend, but there are two clear aberrations: One in the 1920s and early 1930s, and one now.
    • The aberration now is vastly higher than the one in the 1920s and early 1930s, which preceded the Great Depression.

Unless “it’s different this time” (unlikely), the second aberration is going to end up the way the first one did–by returning to the mean.

How will it return to the mean?

    One of two ways.

Either we’ll have hyper-inflation with relatively little new borrowing, which will rapidly increase the size of GDP while holding the debt load steady.  OR we’ll have gradual growth of GDP combined with a gradual reduction in debt.

Neither will be a particularly happy outcome, though the level of unhappiness in each scenario will vary depending on your circumstances.

If you have a job and owe a boatload of money, root for hyperinflation: It will make your salary go up fast (in nominal dollars) while your debt load stays the same.

If you’ve saved a bunch of money, root for slow growth of GDP and gradual debt deduction: This will preserve the value of your hard-earned savings.

In either scenario, though, don’t expect a strong recovery of REAL GDP (inflation adjusted).  What has fueled the rapid GDP growth of the past 25 years has been the borrowing binge that began in the early 1980s (it’s easy to spend and produce more when you borrow more).  It’s unlikely that debt-to-GDP can increase forever, especially from this level.  So that particularly GDP driver is going away.

Unless it’s different this time.  (Pray hard.)

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible – Visit Camaro5.com for additional photos

GM’s obviously thrilled with the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro’s success, as it’s pretty much owned the Ford Mustang on the sales charts to this point. Now, the retooled Mustang hopes to bounce back with new powertrains aimed at erasing any performance advantage the Camaro model has. File that battle under “To Be Continued.” The other thing the Mustang has going for it, however, is that sunseekers can opt for a ragtop variant. As in, today. Chevy fans? Not so much.

The waiting game continues apace, however, as the Camaro Convertible inches closer to showrooms. The latest good news comes from Camaro5.com, where a contributor nabbed the droptop Camaro out testing with its roof down – the first such sighting. We think it’s a looker, just like its fixed-roof sibling, and better still, with the top stowed, all the visibility compromises the coupe has to make in the name of its wicked curb appeal are summarily erased. This is one ride we’re definitely looking forward to. For additional photos, make tracks over to Camaro5.com.

  • Wind turbines: ‘Eco-friendly’ – but not to eagles by Christopher Booker

    Article Tags: Christopher Booker, Windfarms

    Image Attachment

A red kite killed by colliding with a turbine in Spain, where up to a million birds a year may be dying in this way

The same hills that provide lift for soaring birds offer heavily subsidised profits for wind farm developers

In all my scores of items over the years on why the obsession with wind turbines will be seen as one of the major follies of our age, there is one issue I haven’t touched on. The main practical objection to turbines, of course, is that they are useless, producing derisory amounts of electricity at colossal cost. (Yet the Government wants us to spend £100 billion on building thousands more of them which, even were it technically possible, would do virtually nothing to fill the fast-looming 40 per cent gap in our electricity supply.)

A feature of these supposedly environment-friendly machines that I haven’t mentioned, however, is their devastating effect on wildlife, notably on large birds of prey, such as eagles and red kites. Particularly disturbing is the extent to which the disaster has been downplayed by professional bodies, such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in Britain and the Audubon Society in the US, which should be at the forefront of exposing this outrage, but which have often been drawn into a conflict of interest by the large sums of money they derive from the wind industry itself.

    2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8

Back in November, during Chrysler’s seemingly endless business plan presentation, Ram trucks chief Fred Diaz told the captive media audience that the new 6.4-liter Hemi gasoline V8 would likely appear in Ram’s heavy duty trucks. Fast forward to today, however, and it would appear that the big Hemi is now off the table. PickupTrucks.com reports that the 6.4 Hemi will instead be exclusive to Chrysler’s potent SRT vehicles. Chrysler VP of product development, Joe Veltri, says that the 6.4 is designed for performance, not the grunt work truck buyers demand of their vehicles.

PickupTrucks.com notes also that Veltri sees a need for Ram to get gas engine that delivers more power and torque than the currently-available 5.7-liter Hemi, but that the likely course of action will involve building off that engine, rather than looking to adapt the SRT lump for truck duty. Why the drive to add more gas offerings in the diesel-dominated heavy-duty truck category? Emissions regulations, natch. Increasingly strict rules mean that diesels are becoming commensurately more costly to produce and sell, and Chrysler sees the ratio of diesel to gas engines offered becoming much closer in future years than it is today. Head over to PickupTrucks.com for the full skinny.

  • Mediterranean Stuffed Pork Loin

StuffedPorkRegardless of any opinions we might have about the Mediterranean Diet, this stuffed pork loin with a Mediterranean flair is right up our alley. The recipe for Mediterranean stuffing, made from red peppers, spinach, olives, garlic, nuts and an optional sprinkle of feta cheese (we couldn’t resist throwing some in), was sent in by Jade Kendall for the Primal Cookbook Challenge.

A pork loin is a fine cut of meat, tender and easy to cook, but because it’s the leanest cut of pork it also tends to be the least flavorful. This is where Jade steps in with a perfect solution: stuffing. Breadcrumbs are nowhere to be found in his rich and flavorful filling that evokes the best of Mediterranean cooking. His ingredients add fat (nuts), flavor (garlic) and smart fuel (spinach).

Red pepper is no slouch in the nutrient department either, and adds bright color that matches the bright, bold flavor the stuffing brings to the pork. Jade suggested the addition of feta cheese and we suggest adding Kalamata olives. Either will give the stuffing a briny burst of acidity that heightens all the other flavors.

The hardest part about this recipe is holding back and not putting too much stuffing inside the loin. If you do, you won’t be able to roll the meat up completely. If you’re worried about over-stuffing, your best defense is pounding the loin as thin as possible so it rolls easily and if needed, secure the meat with some toothpicks or kitchen twine while it cooks.

    Ingredients:

    MedPorkIngredients

    • 1-2 pound pork tenderloin
    • 1 red pepper, finely chopped
    • 1-2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
    • 6 oz spinach
    • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (any kind that sounds good)
    • Pitted kalamata olives
    • Olive oil or butter for sautéing
    • Optional: 1/4 cup crumbled Feta cheese

    Instructions:

Drizzle some olive oil or butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add red peppers and garlic to the pan. After a few minutes add the spinach and cook until it wilts. Remove from heat.

    sauteveggies

Butterfly cut the pork tenderloin (cut vertically down the middle until almost through, but not quite through the pork).

    butterflypork

Place saran-rap over the butterflied pork and pound it as flat as you can without breaking through the pork (use a meat tenderizing hammer for best results).

    poundpork

Once the pork is thin then add the ingredients from the pan on top of the pork, spreading it all over. Add the nuts, and optional feta cheese and olives.

    stuffingpork

Gently roll the pork into a tube/roll. If you are using a smaller pork loin, or were not able to pound it very thinly, you may just be folding the loin over rather than rolling it. In this case, securing the loin with toothpicks or kitchen twine will be necessary.

Drizzle the pork with olive oil and butter and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40-60 minutes (depending on the size of the pork roll).

When the pork is cooked to your liking, let it cool slightly and then slice.
