  • Report: Unintended acceleration Prius case gets twist involving debt, technology

Second-gen Toyota Prius – Click above for high-res image gallery

The unintended acceleration case of the second-generation Prius belonging to James Sikes now officially has an interesting backstory. Apparently, according to USAToday, Sikes’ “case against Toyota is starting to look shaky.” Why? Two reasons. First, and most important, is the technical argument. Toyota is saying that Sikes’ Prius has a brake override system that should have slowed the car down in the situation Sikes has described to the media and to investigators. Also, looking at Audi’s history with a similar problem back in the 1980s, it’s often driver error that led to the acceleration, not a problem with the vehicles themselves.

Second, and only to consider possible motives for pretending something was wrong when there really wasn’t, Sikes is apparently deep in debt according to financial records uncovered by Jalopnik. He has said repeatedly that he doesn’t plan on suing Toyota, but he has retained a law firm.

As we said yesterday, there is no obvious explanation for why Sikes’ Prius (and a similar model in New York a few days later) sped up and there’s a case to be made that the hype is getting out of hand. Still, something happened, and the sooner we get the facts here, the better off we’ll be. For now, we’ll just have to file this under “Ongoing.”

  • The Most Under-Reported Geopolitical Story Of The Week

Joe Biden AbbasIn all the talk about healthcare and everything else, this story got shockingly little attention.

VP Joe Biden went to Israel, and actually made pointed comments about Israel settlements, and his belief that they’ve been an impediment to Peace in the Middle East.

It’s obvious what’s going on. Obama is using the Vice President to say things he can’t comfortably say politically.

Don’t expect any big changes yet, but as Israel issues have huge ramifications across the Middle East, and thus big business implications (oil, trade, etc.) it’s important to watching this seed of a story.

  • IEA Capitol Report March 12, 2010

IEA Director of Government Relations, Jim Reed
  • Sony Shows Off New 3D Capable Home Theater Audio Systems

Sony Japan recently revealed some updates to their all-in-one home theater systems. Some of you may remember the popular HT-CT100, which is Sony’s “home theater in a box” (HTIB), decorated with rich connectivity and overall respectable sound for the price. It has been a while since that model was released and Sony is refreshing the line with the HDMI 1.4 capable HT-CT150 and HT-CT350 (CT350 pictured above). These will both be released in Japan on April 30th, but they are coming to the USA probably in the Summer or Fall. The HT-CT350 will cost Y50,000 ($550USD), while the CT150 will be about ten thousand less.

What new features do they bring? One of the biggest additions is 3D support, which allows 3D displays and source devices to communicate through an HDMI link. It’s a major milestone on the path to bringing true 3D gaming and 3D home theater to the mass market, supporting resolutions up to 1080p in 3D.

There’s also the addition of ARC, which stands for Audio Return Channel. This basically enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data “upstream” to an A/V receiver or surround audio controller, increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. Format support includes Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic Ⅱ, MPEG-2 AAC, Linear PCM (2ch/5.1ch/7.1ch). The usual S-Force PRO front surround sound technology is back again, as well as a S-Master digital amplifier, Deep Color and x.v. Color modes.

Both models are the usual beautiful black, minimalistic monolithic design we have seen elsewhere with Sony’s 2010 home theater lineup. And like last year, both HTIB’s have a soundbar and subwoofer – the HT-CT150 has a fairly average 280W maximum output, while the CT350 hits in at 320W. Last year’s HT-CT100 came in at 250W.

There are three HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, two SPDIF’s, and digital coax input. There is also two analog audio inputs, a DMPORT (for Walkman, iPod connectors), and the CT350 has a FM tuner.

There is also a new widget you can use on your BRAVIA TV in conjunction with these new home theater systems that allows you to control certain characteristics such as audio output and sound mode.

  • Spy Shots: Are you the next Audi S8?

Check out what a very cold spy photographer snapped some pictures of. This car could very well be the upcoming Audi S8. Of course, as the car in the photos is totally unmarked, this could just be another variant of the big Audi. We’ve suspected for some time that a new S8 is coming, and we hear that it’s most likely headed over to our shores. However, we’ve know next to nothing about what type of terror resides under the hood. Until today.

Unlike the last (frankly underpowered) S8, this new big-fast sedan is dropping the choked-off, Lamborghini-derived V10 in favor of a new twin-turbo V8. The good folks at Car and Driver are claiming the unit will displace 4.0-liters. Our source at Audi wouldn’t confirm that displacement explicitly, but did say that C/D is, “on the right path.” This same source noted that BMW’s been using a smallish displacement twin-turbo V8 (4.4-liters) in the 7 Series for the past year and that Audi intends to stay competitive.

Our Audi source also noted that the new V8 will be offered in many flavors, and will allow Audi to meet all the emissions and mileage standards coming down the pike in the next five years. We’re told to expect a wide range of configurations, similar to what Audi/Lamborghini did with their shared V10. That means different states of tune for different cars, as well as naturally aspirated and force inducted version. As for power, our source once again confirmed that Car and Driver knows what they’re printing. Meaning that the 450 horsepower/450 pound-feet of torque neighborhood isn’t a bad guess, though the final numbers could be higher.

Back to the car in the heavily cropped photograph (check out Autocar for the complete set of pics), we’re still not 100-percent sure it’s the S8. First of all, there are no visual cues to distinguish this black car from a regular A8, save for the requisite four tailpipes. However, as Autocar notes, the new S8 is said to have bold new bodywork to set it apart from the standard car. Also, examine the brakes. They appear to be larger diameter than the standard brakes, yet they aren’t drilled or slotted. One would think (and we would agree with him) that an S vehicle would have a more serious set of stoppers. After all, even the A8 Hybrid “Concept” has fancier discs. Of course, maybe these are just placeholders used during cold weather testing. Yeah, we’re pretty sure this is the new Audi S8.

  • Fox and National Public Radio Have Something in Common: Taking Down Obvious Fair Uses

The Fox News Channel boasts that it takes a different approach to news coverage than, say, CBS, NBC, or NPR. But it appears Fox takes the same approach as its competitors when it comes to fair uses of its news coverage in political advertisements: to try to shut them down using the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s rapid-fire notice and takedown process.

Ben Smith at Politico reports that the Fox news network has used a copyright claim to cause YouTube to disable access to a Democratic National Committee advertisement less than 24 hours after it was posted. The ad, which accuses Senate candidates competing in the Republican primary of focusing on trivial issues, excerpted less than a minute of a Fox interview with one of the candidates.

The DNC has fought back, firing off a letter to Fox explaining the “DNC’s use of the clip is squarely within the bounds of fair use” and demanding that Fox effectively withdraw the claim. The DNC also implicitly threatens to sue Fox under Section 512(f) if it continues to maintain the copyright allegations, and name checks EFF’s Lenz case in the process.

As a news organization, and so presumably familiar with the concepts and application of fair use, Fox should know better. Let’s hope Fox will take this chance to distinguish itself from its rivals and show its support for free speech by withdrawing its spurious copyright claim.

  • Netflix Cancels Plans For New Netflix Prize As Part Of Privacy Lawsuit Settlement

Netflix, of course, received tons of attention and (apparently) a lot of valuable research, with its Netflix prize competition, that allowed anyone to take a bunch of Netflix data and try to improve on Netflix’s ranking algorithm. Of course, whenever you’re dealing with “anonymized data” there are questions about whether or not it can really be anonymous. In nearly every case, someone figures out how to “re-nonymize” at least some of the data. And, of course, that also happened with the original Netflix Prize data. This was especially troubling for Netflix because of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA), 18 USC 2710, a special law that was passed after Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork ran into some trouble when his movie rental lists were made public, which made it specifically illegal to reveal movie rental data. And thus… a lawsuit was born, late last year.

Netflix has announced that it has now settled the lawsuit, but as a part of that settlement it is canceling the plans it had announced for additional Netflix prizes. While the company can still do contests in the future, it will need to make sure that the data cannot be reconnected to an actual person, which may be quite difficult in practice. This does raise some interesting questions for other attempts to crowdsource research. There are certainly benefits to opening up data to a community of smart people — but companies are going to need to be extra careful in those settings in dealing with privacy issues.

  • Report: Subaru ditches all-wheel-drive plans for its version of Toyota FT-86

Subaru and Toyota’s new rear-wheel-drive sports car, based on the Toyota FT-86 Concept, is ready to make its debut later next year. It was reported in Dec. 2009 that Subaru, which is well known for being an all-wheel-drive brand, is worried that a rear-wheel-drive sports car may drive away loyal customers.

Well, it seems like Subaru doesn’t really care anymore. Reports coming out of Japan say that Subaru may drop the idea of offering an all-wheel-drive version of the Toyota FT-86 altogether due to added cost involved with the conversion from rear-wheel-drive to all-wheel-drive.

We’re guessing that means the only difference between the Toyota FT-86 and Subaru’s version will be the design.

Click here for more news on the Toyota FT-86 Concept.

Refresher: Inspired by the sporty 1980s Corolla AE86, the production version of the FT-86 is reported to be powered by a 200-hp 2.0L boxer Subaru engine sending power to the rear-wheels. Prices are set to start above $20,000.

  • Research firm forecasts microgrid boom

    From Green Right Now Reports

    Image: Pike Research

    Image: Pike Research

With Americans focusing more and more on streamlining their energy consumption and reducing costs, microgrids may become an increasing part of the solution. Smart integration that can allow communities, companies or institutions to operate “off the grid” is not only attractive, but is rapidly becoming a genuine alternative.

Microgrids are “islanded” power generation and distribution zones that operate autonomously from the larger electrical grid. A new report from Pike Research predicts that more than 3 GW of new microgrid capacity will be come online globally by 2015 at a total investment of $7.8 billion. The firm expects more than 2,000 sites to be operational worldwide by 2015, up from fewer than 100 in 2010.

Pike sees North America as the biggest player, accounting for 74 percent of industry capacity. Researchers anticipate that most of that will come in the form of institutional microgrids, followed by commercial/industrial and community grids.

In Europe and Asia Pacific, community microgrids are forecast as the largest categories.

As the current top-down system becomes increasingly unreliable and insecure and isn’t always friendly to renewable power generation, microgrids may gain appeal, with the potential to be part of a larger effort to create a Smart Grid that can add intelligence and automation while giving customers greater control over consumption.

“The distinguishing feature of a microgrid is the ability to separate and isolate itself from the utility’s distribution system during brownouts and blackouts,” says Pike Research managing director Clint Wheelock. “This degree of localized control is compelling for many microgrid proponents during this time of increasing concern over grid reliability.”

  • Students Rate Harper Faculty Among Best in Nation, Daily Herald

By Kimberly Pohl | Daily Herald Staff
Given the choice, few college students would voluntarily sign up for a class that meets at 8 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays.

But exceptions might be made when that time slot is taught by a professor known for being engaging or kind with the grading curve.

The student-fueled Web site RateMyProfessors.com – a particularly popular resource when picking a class schedule – puts Harper College’s faculty with the best in the nation. Professors at the Palatine school place seventh overall among two-year institutions on the site’s annual rankings, which were released earlier this month.

Associate psychology professor Helen Burroughs, who boasts one of the highest scores, has a theory why students regard her colleagues so highly.

“I have never met a teacher at Harper College who doesn’t have the same the goal as I do, which is success for students,” the Barrington woman said. “There’s a positive and supportive culture throughout the campus.”

Owned by MTV, RateMyProfessors.com has more than 6.8 million student-generated ratings of more than 1 million professors from 6,500 colleges. Students anonymously post comments and assign scores on a 5-point scale based on attributes such as helpfulness and clarity.

The only other Illinois school to make the list was Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills at No. 4.

Burroughs has been teaching full time at Harper for 12 years, but her first experience on campus was as a student in the late 1980s. She was a pediatric nurse looking to change careers and said professors at Harper inspired her and put her at ease.

She’s tried to recreate that culture in her classroom, and it seems to be working. Her overall quality score on RateMyProfessors.com is 4.9 points, and many of the 90 or so students who posted comments lauded her passion for psychology and interesting lectures.

“I don’t want anxiety in the classroom because it can interfere with the learning process,” she said. “You can’t retain information in the brain if you’re frightened.”

Also rating high with 4.8 points is philosophy professor Charles Brown, who came to Harper in 1995. He said his style is to first outline an issue very clearly and then allow the lesson to evolve into a discussion.

The Forest Park man is hesitant to put much stock in the Web site, but isn’t surprised by the results.

“There are all kinds of professional development opportunities designed to help teachers at Harper do their job well,” he said.

  • GM President Mark Reuss: Chevrolet Cruze Coupe “may show up”

Chevrolet Cruze – click above for high-res image gallery

Check out this little nugget General Motor’s North American president Mark Reuss let slip during a recent web chat:

“[…] 2 door cruze is a nice idea, and it may show up in the global market. As we have 2 door Cobalts currently, [North America] would naturally look at a Cruze 2 door, but I believe our small car portfolio will be WAY beyond what it is now, so a 2 door something still is needed.”

Quite interesting, no? Especially as the Cruze will eventually replace the Cobalt as Chevy’s C-segment car. We suspect there will be a bit of overlap between the two cars (GM’s high-volume models die hard), but the idea of a Cruze SS Coupe is quite tantalizing. To us at any rate.

Also lip smacking is another bit of info Reuss let slip when a man named Pete asked the following question, “Can you tell us if the plans for a ZETA RWD sedan in one of the core brands is moving forward?” Mr. Reuss’ response, “quite possibly Pete…….” That’s not the Lutzian answer we’re used to (“RWD, twin-turbo wagons with manuals for all!”) but it’s not a “no,” either. Also of note, Reuss, a competition-license carrying “car guy” at one time owned Buick GNX #446. Good to know, and stay tuned….

  • Screenwriters Claim Sony Copied Their Plot For A Video Game

The entitlement some people feel because someone else had a somewhat (but not really) similar idea to what they had, and then actually executed on it better, is really astounding. For years, we’ve seen people claim that various filmmakers, TV producers and authors had “stolen” their ideas and sued over it. These lawsuits almost never get anywhere. In almost every case, the similarities between the stories are marginal at best, and clearly were developed independently. It’s just that the creator of the less-well-known work is jealous of the success of whoever came up with a better version that got a lot more attention.

Apparently, those kinds of lawsuits are now moving to video games as well — as two screenplay authors tried to claim that Sony copied their screenplay for its game, God of War. Of course, both the video game and the screenplay are apparently based on ancient Greek mythology, which, you know, are sorta in the public domain by now, and the general concepts are rather pervasive in an awful lot of modern storytelling.

No matter. The screenwriters insisted that the gamemakers must have seen their screenplay. Thankfully, the judge is having none of it:

“No one can own the basic idea for a story. General plot ideas are not protected by copyright law; they remain forever the common property of artistic mankind.”

  • Women’s Political Marginalisation

By Mustapha Muhammad KANO, Mar 12 (IPS) Ten years after Nigeria returned to civil rule women still play second fiddle in the male-dominated politics of Africa’s most populous nation, women politicians and activists say.

Since this West African country of 140 million people broke from military rule and embraced uninterrupted multi-party democracy in 1999, men have been calling the shots while women, who constitute more than half of voters (54 percent), only hold marginal elective offices.

"Although it has been a decade of uninterrupted civilian rule, Nigerian women are still battling political marginalisation where they are not given the chance to hold political offices," Rabi Musa, a women’s rights activist told IPS.

"Despite the relative improvement in women political participation and representation between 2003 and 2007, such improvement does not reflect women’s numerical superiority," said Musa, coordinator of the Women’s Right Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA).

Between 1999 and 2003 a total of 15 female parliamentarians, were elected. This figure marginally improved from 2003 to 2007 and there are currently 26 women are in parliament.

Nigeria is signatory to the United Nations convention to eliminate discrimination against women but women in the country continue to voice dissent against their continued domination by men in the realm of politics and in other spheres.

"We women constitute the majority of voters during elections we are hardly given a level playing ground to actualise our dreams of active involvement in the politics of our country through elective offices," female politician Maryam Jari told IPS at a political meeting.

"The Beijing conference requires every country that participated in the conference to reserve 30 percent of positions and offices to women but in Nigeria we are yet to have even 10 percent," Jari said.

    Why marginalised?

Social, cultural and religious factors are largely responsible for the marginalisation of women in politics in Nigeria, particularly in the Muslim-dominated part of the country where politics is seen as men’s exclusive preserve.

Nigerian politics is capital intensive as it requires spending large amounts of money to organise and mobilise support to win an election. In Nigeria, female candidates rarely receive sponsorship from donors.

Women in Nigeria are not as economically empowered as men. In most communities women are economically dependent on their husbands who control family income. Even where women are allowed to engage in money-making ventures, their husbands control the purse. Mairo Usman, a politician in northern Nigeria’s Kano city, said women’s weak economic base contributes to their political domination by men.

"Women in Nigeria have far less money than men and even in politics there is a wide economic disparity between women and men, which gives men competitive political advantage over women because they are the ones with money to throw around and win votes," Usman said.

"Those among us that aspire to political office need the financial support of men who usually prefer supporting their fellow men due to prevalent male chauvinism that runs through the veins of our men," she said.

Politicking is time-consuming with politicians travelling far and wide and often staying overnight in hotels far from their homes during political rallies. Such political rallies are often rowdy and at times violent with political thugs taking centre-stage, hurling insults and brandishing assortments of locally made weapons. Given such scenarios, women politicians are generally seen as promiscuous in a society that believes women’s role should be confined to domestic management.

"We are seen largely as lose women because we are politicians who, by the nature of politics, stay out late at night attending political meetings and rallies and sometimes sleep in hotels far away from our homes," Jari told IPS.

"Politics involve intermingling between men and women and our culture and religion strongly abhor mixing between the two sexes which is viewed as indication of lewdness," she added.

Aisha Suleiman, a Kano resident, was initially reluctant to join partisan politics due to the stigma associated with it. She said the unwholesome attitude of some female political supporters, which portray women politicians as "uncultured" and "ruffians" put her off from entering politics.

"The way women political supporters hurl abusive and violent language, take drugs such as hemp and other stimulants during political rallies give them an air of irresponsibility," Suleiman said.

The desire to make a difference and change the negative public perception of women politicians eventually changed Suleiman’s mind and she entered the political arena.

"If we all stay away and allow such uncultured women to continue exhibiting their uncouth attitude in politics, we will never be taken seriously," the 25-year-old Suleiman said.

Mohammed Ali Mashi, head of rights organisation General Improvement of Persons Initiatives (GIOPIN), said tradition and distorted religious dogma play a significant role in women’s political marginalisation.

Hard line Muslim clerics mount campaigns on the pulpit and on radio denouncing women’s political participation as being against the tenets of Islam. Mashi faulted such radical clerics, arguing that their views do not represent true position of Islam.

Mashi believes women are gradually defying such notions and venturing into politics and contesting elective offices due to sustained public enlightenment campaigns. He, however, said more campaigns have to be intensified to minimise the wide political margin between men and women.

"Since Islam encourages women to seek an education, I see no reason why society should deprive women political equality with men because they also have the right to contribute to nation building as men," Mashi said.

    Measures to change the trend

Gender-based NGOs like WRAPA have mounted rigorous sensitisation campaigns to erase the promiscuity stigma attached to female participation in politics. "We are all out to disabuse the minds of the public of the popularly-held belief that women politicians are flirtatious simply because they mingle with men and attend meetings in hotels and sleep there when the need arises," said Musa.

"We wonder why the society doesn’t see men politicians that sleep at hotels for (political) meetings and rallies as immoral. Why women? It is very disheartening," she lamented.
