  • Study: GPS users top destination is Walmart

TeleNav is one of the largest navigation services providers with more than 13 million subscribers. The company today released usage data that suggests users depend on GPS navigation for much more than getting from point A to point B.

When it comes to searching out nearby businesses on the road, drivers across the country seem to be in agreement on their favorites. According to an analysis of searches conducted by TeleNav users in December 2009 here are the Top 10 Businesses Searched Using TeleNav GPS:

    • 1. Walmart
    • 2. Starbucks
    • 3. Target
    • 4. Best Buy
    • 5. Bank of America
    • 6. Walgreens
    • 7. Pizza Hut
    • 8. Home Depot
    • 9. McDonald’s
    • 10. Chase Bank

The data also indicates residents of Maryland are the nation’s most frequent users of GPS navigation..

Will the new Police Interceptor be a toughened Taurus SHO? – click above for high-res image gallery

Just a quick note: The Detroit News is reporting that the next Ford Police Interceptor will be based on the same platform as the Taurus. For you platform geeks out there, that’s the Ford D3 chassis that underpins everything from the the Lincoln MKS to the Volvo XC90 to the Ford Flex (though the Flex and the Lincoln MKT ride on a lengthened version called D4). Yesterday, we explained that a new Police Interceptor is showing up tomorrow (Friday, March 12) in Las Vegas and that it probably won’t be riding on the Panther platform. Regardless, the concept will be unveiled at the Vegas Motor Speedway.

There’s still no official word from Ford on the matter, however. However, if the new Interceptor is in fact Taurus-based, that means no rear-wheel drive Falcon in the United States. Which is a definite bummer. Also, while there are all-wheel drive variants of the D3 platform – and we think it’s safe to assume that if the new Police Interceptor is D3-based it will be AWD – it lacks frame rails. Has Ford figured out a way to make a unibody car tough enough for police work? We shall see. And if the new PI is a Taurus, will it be based on a modified 365-horsepower SHO? We’d wager yes. Let’s just hope they fit some bigger brakes for cop duty, eh?

  • Obama: We Must Move Forward On ACTA

With the EU Parliament soundly voting against ACTA secrecy and current proposals, lots of folks have been wondering how the US was going to respond. So far, it’s not looking good. The USTR gave a giant no comment, and President Obama (who had been pretty quiet on ACTA himself) addressed ACTA in a speech, where he expressed strong support for continuing to move forward with ACTA.

What was telling, however, was how he described ACTA — which is that he used the bogus arguments for what people think ACTA is about, rather than what’s actually in the agreement. It’s a political trick:

“There’s nothing wrong with other people using our technologies, we welcome it — we just want to make sure that it’s licensed, and that American businesses are getting paid appropriately,” Obama said. “That’s why [the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative] is using the full arsenal of tools available to crack down on practices that blatantly harm our businesses, and that includes negotiating proper protections and enforcing our existing agreements, and moving forward on new agreements, including the proposed Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.”

Except, of course, ACTA goes way, way, way beyond that. It’s disappointing that Obama, who keeps insisting he’s in favor of greater transparency in government seems to be ignoring the fact that the USTR has been anything but transparent on ACTA, and that the whole effort has really been a blatant push by the entertainment industry and pharma to engage in legislative laundering to push through all sorts of restrictive rules that have nothing, whatsoever, to do with protecting against counterfeiting.

this is shocking – New York Fed and Treasury Tell Banks to Hold Cash – Posted by Larry Doyle – How often have Americans heard politicians screaming at banks for not providing credit? How often have those same politicians and bank regulators informed us that they are working to have banks inject money into the economy to support Main Street?  Regrettably, America deals with this pandering and posturing from our political leaders and regulators all too often. While Americans are being told one thing, what are the regulators telling the banks? Hold cash.  I am not shocked, but certainly disappointed, that American financial periodicals failed to run this story detailing these recommendations from our bank regulators. – Sense on Cents Blog

  • Field Operations Will Design Santa Monica Town Square

James Corner and Field Operations won the design competition to design Santa Monica’s new Town Square and Palisades Garden Walk (see earlier post on the competition). According to The Architect’s Newspaper, the seven-acre park will connect the city’s Civic Center with the rest of Santa Monica. Barbara Stinchfield, Santa Monica’s Director of Community and Cultural Services said Field Operations won because of its “commitment to making places for people. It’s [about] their dedication to sustainability and public art and engaging the community.”

The one-acre Town Square part of the park will be reserved for cultural and civic events, while the six-acre Palisades Garden Walk will display the city’s ”unique cultural and horticultural offerings, including a botanical element and water features.” Streetscape improvements will include more pedestrian and bike lanes designed to connect the park with downtown.

Lisa Switkin, an associate principal at Field Operations told The Architect’s Newspaper that the firm is now examining the “site’s historic significance, its local plant life, its bluffs and dunes, its significant grade changes, and even its nearby freeway interchange.”

Christopher Hawthorne, architecture critic for the L.A. Times adds that the park development work is just a piece of broader development plans for Santa Monica. The goal is to effectively apply smart growth strategies to the area. “Bringing together transit, contemporary architecture and design, open space, housing and pedestrian amenities, the Santa Monica effort is a rare example of integrated, comprehensive planning in a region struggling to wean itself from dependence on the car and create spaces for genuine public engagement. It is also a sign of how smart cities are leveraging the construction of new transit lines to pursue a broad range of improvements.”

Hawthorne is also confident Field Operations’s ability to innovate won’t be hamstrung by infrastructural challenges. “In Santa Monica, Corner and his competitors were able to anticipate the arrival of the light-rail station and consider the potential capping of the freeway without, crucially, having to worry about actually designing — or reserving money — for those infrastructural elements. Now that Corner’s firm has won the commission, he will be able to pursue an ambitious, even freewheeling design that also happens to slot satisfyingly into a larger civic plan.”

Some $25 million in redevelopment agency funds will be used for the project. Construction is expected to begin in 2012.

  • The Sentiment Indicator That’s Warning Of A Market Sell-Off

(This guest post originally appeared at the author’s blog)

The warning flags continue to pop up all over the place and investors continue to run head first into stocks.  None of the recent warning flags are as alarming as today’s huge spike in individual investor sentiment.  Small investor bullishness surged to 45.3% versus last week as the market continues to melt higher.  This has served as a fairly reliable contrarian indicator in the past as small investors tend to pile into stocks near the end of rallies.

Individual investor sentiment has reached levels that have historically been followed by very poor equity returns.  A few of the notable periods when investor sentiment was this high include:

    • A 50% reading prior to a 3 month 10% sell-off in Q2 2008
    • A 45% reading prior to the 2008 market crash
    • A 47% reading prior to the 20% sell-off to the March 2009 lows
    • A 49% reading prior to the January 2010 sell-off

    chart

No indicator is perfect and this one has certainly been excessively bullish at points during the 2009 rally, but it confirms the growing bullish trend that we saw in yesterday’s Investors Intelligence poll where financial advisers increased bullishness to 44.9%.   With institutional investors stacking up on the bullish side of the trade and now individual investors stacking up on the same side you just have to wonder – who is left to buy stocks?   Better yet, who are they going to sell to?

  • KENYA: Proposed Constitutional Amendment Sets Back Women’s Rights

By Susan Anyangu-Amu NAIROBI, Mar 11 (IPS) Lillian Mutuku, a 34-year-old mother of three, describes her home in Katine area, in Kenya’s Eastern province Tala, as a harsh place to live. The soil is poor, she says, the sun beats down mercilessly and vegetation is sparse.

"People here face a daily struggle to make ends meet and to find water and food for their families. During the dry season it is worse, as the few crops we plant die, making food expensive," she complained. "Women have to walk many miles a day in search of that precious liquid – water."

The fact that Kenya's political parties have been struggling to rewrite the country’s Constitution since February 2008 in an effort to end post-election violence and improve justice means a lot to Mutuku, despite the fact that she fails to understand the document’s legal jargon. She believes the new Constitution will oblige government to ensure her family’s access to food, shelter, water and health care.

"The issues that preoccupy my mind are the daily struggle to provide food for my family and for my children to go to school. While there is free primary education, there are not enough teachers in our area, and so parents are forced to pay 100 Kenyan Schilling ($1.3) per month for private teachers," Mutuku says.

This is a lot of money for Mutuku, a domestic worker, and her husband, who works as a casual labourer. Between the two of them, they earn about $100 a month, which is hardly enough to sustain their family.

If the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC), which was established to manage the Constitution review process, has its way, Mutuku’s family will never be able to hold government accountable for access to their basic human rights.

The PSC has been castigated by various women’s rights organisations for diluting the language in the draft document, prepared by a Committee of Experts (COE). The initial COE document guaranteed social and economic rights through the Constitution, but the PSC changed the language of the Bill of Rights, leaving the onus of ensuring those rights to parliament.

The PSC deleted numerous sentences referencing basic human rights, including the right to social security and right to health, including health care services, reproductive health care and emergency treatment. It excluded Kenyan’s right to education, inclucing the right to free and compulsory pre-primary and primary education as well as available and accessible secondary and post-secondary education. Rights to housing, food and water were also taken out of the document.

Lawyer Catherine Mumma terms this as a particularly big loss for Kenyan women who often bear the burden of providing for their families: "The chapter on the Bill of Rights as drafted by the COE was one of the major gains for the women of this country. (A) woman who walks for many hours in search of a hospital and collapses with her baby on the back due to lack of food does not care about the legal jargon in the Constitution. She wants to hear that the government will ensure she has access to basic human rights."

Speaking at a one-day workshop – organised by several women’s organisations in Nairobi in February to review the COE and PSC drafts – Grace Maingi-Kimani, acting executive director of non-profit organisation Federation of Women Lawyers Kenya said the PSC overstepped its mandate by reviewing the Bill of Rights.

"The PSC did the unthinkable and recommended the deletion of the state’s obligation to domesticate international human rights instruments. They also deleted the provision on social and economic rights and relegated to parliament the sole power to decide through legislation when and how the rights and standards can be applicable in national context," Kimani explained.

Pricilla Nyokabi, executive director of women’s rights group Kituo cha Sheria, agreed that parliament should be left no option but to reinstate the rights in the draft.

"Entrenching these rights in the constitution would obligate the government to ensure equal provision to all citizens. Should the Constitution state that every person has the right to these services, one can enforce the right where they are not provided for," noted Nyokabi.

PSC chairperson Mohammed Abdikadir, however, says constitutions should be lean documents that cover the broad principles and values that guide a state. Additional details should be formulated as statutes.

Human rights activists remain skeptical. "Can we really leave (our human rights) to members of parliament who are always bickering? No, we cannot trust them with such fundamental rights," stated women’s rights activist Miriam Wanjiku.

Currently, the latest draft of the Constitution is reviewed parliament, which has 30 days to debate the document and decide if it will be passed. Parliamentarians need a two thirds majority to alter the wording of the draft.

To prevent the document from being passed as is, a grouping of women’s rights organisations, including FIDA Kenya, Urgent Action Fund, Centre for Rights Education and Awareness, Africa Woman and Child Feature Services, have handed a memorandum to parliament, demanding that the initial document drafted by the COE be retained.

"The women of Kenya demand explicit recognition of their rights in the regional and international human rights instruments that Kenya has ratified," the memorandum states.

  • CTI’s Trackballs Feature Newly Redesigned Encoders

Each high-reliability trackball from CTI Electronics utilizes newly redesigned electro-optical encoders, patent pending. Additionally, these new electro-optical encoders feature a redundant photo-detector and light path to monitor the encoder LED light output. A novel circuit uses this light-intensity feedback signal to ensure that the quadrature output withstands the test of time— without compromising performance. Not only do our trackballs offer very high encoder wheel resolution, they also provide long-term reliability and durability.

In that CTI is building its own optical encoder, as opposed to purchasing a photo-detector sensor, customers can be assured of not only lasting reliability, but also long-term availability. This is especially important in products that require regulatory approvals, have long-term market requirements, or would be costly to redesign should an off-the-shelf photo-detector become obsolete.

Our strategy is to produce all of the key sensors used in our products, allowing CTI to regulate quality, reliability and long-term availability.

Over the past nine months, we’ve seen the next-generation Chevrolet Malibu twice at General Motors media events that were closed to the public. On neither occasion were we allowed to take any photographs of the styling buck, but now we can finally show you what the next Malibu looks like. A General Motors filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office shows what is obviously an unidentified Chevrolet four-door sedan.

It retains all of the standard Chevrolet design features including the dual-port grille and four individual tail lights. Compared to the current and very well reviewed Malibu, the new car has more sculpted surfaces, especially around the corners. The chopped off tail of the current generation car is generally considered to be the weakest part of that design, and the new model addresses that area with what looks to be a much more attractive posterior.

The new Malibu will ride on the same Epsilon II platform that underpins the Buick LaCrosse and Regal. The new model will have a shorter wheelbase than the 112.3-inch span of today’s car, but it’s not clear if it will be as short as the 107.8-inch wheelbase of the new Buick Regal. The new Malibu will, however, be both wider and taller than the current model. The interior is also significantly upgraded with higher quality materials as GM tries to keep up with the advances of new models from Ford.

The next Malibu will probably debut in late in 2011 as a 2012 model, and we may see it in public at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. The timing of the Malibu should line up nicely with the Ford Fusion/Mondeo replacement and make for a very interesting battle in the mid-size sedan market.
