  • Porsche Panamera Convertible revealed in patent drawings

Today will go down in history as the day that upcoming luxury convertibles made their debut through patent drawings. Earlier today, we saw the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and now AutoWeek has obtained U.S. patent drawings of the upcoming Porsche Panamera convertible.

Besides previous reports of Zuffenhausen insiders saying that the convertible has been canceled, it seems Porsche is committed to building the drop-top Panamera.

It is reported that the four-door Porsche Panamera convertible will have no B-Pillar meaning it will require substantial stiffening to the vehicle’s floorpan and bulkheads to ensure sufficient structural rigidity and integrity.

No word on when the Panamera convertible will make its debut.

  • Because Only The Record Labels Are Supposed To Get Away With Not Paying Their Musicians…

So lots of people have been submitting versions of the story about how Pink Floyd is suing EMI, claiming that EMI isn’t paying the band what it owes for iTunes downloads. I’d avoided posting this, because it’s basically the same contractual dispute we’ve seen from other acts, where they claim that their labels are accounting for iTunes downloads improperly in order to avoid paying the bands. This story is as old as the recording industry itself. The labels have always worked hard to avoid actually paying bands anything.

But what made it worth mentioning is that the lawsuit has come out at just about the same time that the record labels are now hilariously trying to claim that radio stations are “pigs” who refuse to pay musicians. In one of the more juvenile pranks out there, a lobbying group supported by the labels is going around with a giant inflatable pig, mocking radio stations for “refusing to pay musicians for their work .”

You would think that the record labels would be smart enough to avoid making an argument that could so easily be turned against them. How about before you go blame the radio stations for not paying the labels to promote your acts, you start out by paying money to some of your top selling acts who claim they’ve never seen a dime in royalties. Given the labels’ propensity to blatantly lie to artists about how much they’re owed, you’d think the last thing they’d want to do is call attention to who is “refusing to pay musicians for their work.”

  • Maserati, Fiat working on new aluminum platform, will underpin new high-end RWD Alfas

Maserati and Fiat are both developing a new platform family for the brand and will also share the new platform with new, high-end, rear-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo vehicles. The new platform will underpin the next-generation Quattroporte sedan and the GranTurismo coupe and convertible, according to a report by Inside Line.

Insiders say that the new platform will have “high aluminum content” to reduce weight of current Maserati models. It will also be capable of accommodating the hybrid drivetrains.

Alfa Romeo will be using the new platform to offer new rear-wheel-drive models, including a new coupe and convertible to replace the 8C Competizione.

The current 8C, which uses Maserati components, is built at Maserati’s Modena factory.

  • Alleged patent images for Porsche Panamera convertible turn up

Porsche Panamera Convertible patent drawing – click above for high-res image gallery

See, apparently we aren’t crazy, though we may have been a little smidge off the mark. Back in October, we reported that Porsche had begun work on an open top version of their then new Panamera super sedan. Only we said it would be a two-door ’cause, you know, drop top and all that. Whoops! If these alleged German patent office images from Autocar are anything to go on, Porsche is going after the highly nuanced (to put it mildly) – and presumably lucrative – four-door convertible market, joining the ranks of such noted automakers as… those dudes in Miami that chop the tops off Chrysler 300Cs. Okay, fine, the Maybach 62 Landaulet is kinda like a four-door convertible (but not quite), though at $1.35 million, it actually might compete in a different segment. And yes, yes – we know – the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is technically a four-door convertible.

But never mind any of that, as judging by these images, the Porsche Panamera convertible looks to be pillarless, something that the neither the $25,000 Jeep nor the mega-bucks Maybach can lay claim to. As such, the Panamera’s chassis would presumably have to be beefed up in a major way to retain some semblance of stiffness and rigidity. Though maybe not quite as much as you (and we) might think. If you look closely at the patent images, you can see that, like the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drop Head Coupe, the A-pillar has been reinforced with a mini-triangle. You’ll also note that the Pan’s butt isn’t any bigger than before, suggesting a folding cloth top as opposed to a space-intensive retractable hardtop. Back to chassis strength – thanks to modern production techniques, it’s possible to substitute in thicker gauge steel that will increase stiffness without adding as much weight as traditional afterthought convertible chassis bracing.

And where does this leave those of us wishing for a modern-day 928? Not in a very good place, we’re afraid. These patent drawings clearly show that the new, most-likely upcoming Panamera Convertible has been engineered as a four-door from the get-go, and never a duoporte. Shame…

  • Walther-Präzision presents new CT emergency release coupling

The clean break couplings of the new CT series were developed especially for demanding media used in chemistry and medicine, food technology and process engineering as well as in mechanical engineering. Walther-Präzision has met the demands of many customers for an ergonomic and squirt-free operation even under residual pressure by using a special valve technology. The remaining leakage was reduced so that virtually no media loss occurs while disconnecting the coupling.

All clean break couplings of the CT series are manufactured as standard from high-quality stainless steel and are ATEX approved. If desired, the couplings can also be supplied according to TA Luft (Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control), with an FDA-compliant seal quality or free of oil, grease or silicone.

Based on numerous requests from customers, all technical advantages of this modern clean break series have now been incorporated into a newly developed CT emergency release coupling. This reliable safety coupling is used for hose connections between stationary and movable containers, for example between a loading place / filling station and transport vehicles. An uncontrolled separation of the hose connection during the refuelling procedure is prevented by a predefined emergency separating sequence. In this way, user and environmental safety is considerably improved.

  • Toyota sales expected to jump 30% in March, thanks to incentives

Earlier this week, Toyota’s CEO Akio Toyoda said that North American sales could recover in March – well, he wasn’t lying. According to reports coming out today, new incentives are boosting Toyota’s U.S. sales for the current month and analysts forecast a 30 percent jump for the month of March.

Toyota’s sales in February fell 10 percent as it struggled with huge recalls across its lineup. On March 1, Toyota introduced 0 percent financing, subsidized leases and free maintenance incentives.

Senior Vice President Don Esmond told reporters today that North American sales surged about 50 percent in the first eight days of March.

“Incentives work best in the early going, but they start to peter out as the month goes along,” Edmunds senior analyst Jessica Caldwell said today. “That’s why it’s important for Toyota to find something else in the months ahead.”

  • Action Alert: Audit the Fed!

The Federal Reserve is the chief culprit behind the economic crisis. Its unlimited power to create money out of thin air brought us the boom and bust cycle and causes one financial bubble after another. By recklessly inflating the money supply the Fed intentionally distorts interest rates and erodes the value of the dollar.

For the past 30 years, Ron Paul has worked tirelessly to bring much-needed transparency and accountability to the secretive bank. And in 2009 his unfaltering dedication showed astonishing results: HR 1207, the bill to audit the Federal Reserve, swept the country and made the central bankers shudder at their desks. The bill passed as an amendment both in the House Financial Services Committee and in the House itself.

But the usurpers of America’s future won’t take it lying down. They don’t want their secrets exposed and at this very moment, they are working frantically behind the scenes to quietly derail all efforts to open up the Federal Reserve to independent scrutiny.

A handful of Fed-loving U.S. senators are currently rewriting the Financial Reform Bill to strip out Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed amendment and actually expand the Fed’s power over banks, lending and money.

Action Alert: Call your senators today and demand that they…

    1. Stand with the nearly 80% of Americans who support a FULL audit of the Federal Reserve.
    2. Withdraw their support for ANY effort to strip the bill of the Audit,
    3. Oppose all efforts to grant the Fed more power under the guise of so-called “reform.”

Enter your zip code to look up your senators and their previous position on S 604, the Audit the Fed bill:

Continue reading for more on Audit the Fed…

02/2009: Ron Paul Introduces Bill to Audit the Federal Reserve

On February 26, 2009, Ron Paul introduces HR 1207, the bill to audit the Federal Reserve:

“I rise to introduce the Federal Reserve Transparency Act. Throughout its nearly 100-year history, the Federal Reserve has presided over the near-complete destruction of the United States dollar. Since 1913 the dollar has lost over 95% of its purchasing power, aided and abetted by the Federal Reserve’s loose monetary policy. How long will we as a Congress stand idly by while hard-working Americans see their savings eaten away by inflation? Only big-spending politicians and politically favored bankers benefit from inflation.”

After a groundswell of grassroots support, HR 1207 and its counterpart in the Senate, S 604, attract 317 and 32 co-sponsors respectively.

10/2009: Mel Watt Introduces Competing Placebo Amendment

With HR 1207 gaining momentum, Congressman Mel Watt introduces a competing banker-approved “placebo” amendment that would replace HR 1207 and actually increase the Federal Reserve’s secrecy and power.

    11/2009: Mel Watt Amendment Defeated

On November 19, 2009, after several hours of heated debate, Ron Paul’s and Alan Grayson’s “Audit the Fed” amendment passes 43-26 in the House Financial Services Committee. The amendment calls for a comprehensive audit of the Federal Reserve and replaces the opposing “placebo” amendment proposed by Mel Watt.

12/2009: Audit the Fed Passes in the House

The Audit the Fed amendment is attached to Barney Frank’s HR 3996, also known as the “Financial Stability Improvement Act of 2009″. That bill is later combined, along with several other bills, into “The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 – Financial Stability Improvement Act of 2009″ (HR 4173). The House passes the new bill on December 11, 2009 on a vote of 223-202.

    Remaining Milestones Still Ahead

According to Ron Paul’s video update, now that the bill has passed the House, the following milestones are still ahead of us:

    • “It has to go through the Senate; it’s going to have a harder time in the Senate.
    • Then it has to go to a conference committee and that’s another problem.
    • And then it has to go to the President.
    • And even if it goes through all that, we still have the courts to deal with, and courts have never been friendly to those of us who want honest money.”

03/2010: Treasury Officials Still Support Mel Watt Amendment!

On March 8, 2010 Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein participated in a bizarre meeting with high level treasury officials:

The Treasury Department is vigorously opposed to a House-passed measure that would open the Federal Reserve to an audit by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), a senior Treasury official said Monday. Instead, the official said, the Treasury prefers a substitute offered by Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.), and would like to see it enacted as part of the Senate bill.

The Watt measure, however, while claiming to increase transparency, actually puts new restrictions on the GAO’s ability to perform an audit.

    Campaign for Liberty Action Alert

Campaign for Liberty President John Tate sent out the following email action alert:

    Dear Supporter,

Our battle to Audit the FED has reached a crisis.

Right now, a handful of Fed-loving U.S. Senators, led by Bob Corker (R-TN), Richard Shelby (R-AL), Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Judd Gregg (R-NH), are reportedly working to rewrite from the Financial Reform Bill to strip out Audit the Fed and actually EXPAND the Fed’s power over banks, lending and money.

I need you to contact your senators today with an urgent message: Audit the Fed and DON’T increase the Fed’s power.

As you know, Audit the Fed is currently in H.R. 4173, a financial “reform” package that has passed the House.

The Senate will unveil its version soon, which means you and I have to work fast.

In addition to stripping out transparency and accountability, the Senate version is set to grant the Fed broad NEW powers over our economy by putting the Consumer Financial Protection Agency under the Fed’s purview.

Seriously? The same Fed that won’t tell us where our trillions of dollars went is going to be put in charge of “consumer protection?”

It would be funny if it weren’t so dangerous.

You and I must turn up the heat on the Senate TODAY.

Please contact [your senators] at once!

Of course, as you know, over two thirds of the House of Representatives, almost a third of the Senate and nearly 80% of the American people support a FULL Audit of the Federal Reserve.

So the establishment has no choice but to attempt to fight us in secret.

That’s why they’re trying every trick in the book to make sure they kill a full-scale Audit of the Fed.

And that’s why it has never been more important that you call [your senators] and DEMAND that they withdraw their support for ANY effort to strip the bill of the Audit, and oppose all efforts to grant the Fed more power under the guise of so-called “reform.”

It’s clear that passage of this bill would pretty much guarantee that the FED is never audited, allowing the banksters to continue to rob and loot the American people.

And this sounds like something taken directly out of the Ben Bernanke playbook.

You see, Ben Bernanke and his buddies have been claiming the need for Fed “independence” for some time now.

But what they’re really talking about is independence from accountability…

…Independence to keep printing money out of thin air without any oversight from the American people, further destroying our savings and wiping out the middle class.

That’s why it’s vital you take action IMMEDIATELY.

Please call [your senators] and demand that they stand with the nearly 80% of Americans who support a FULL audit of the Federal Reserve.

You and I are now very close to allowing the American people to have the first ever COMPLETE audit of the Federal Reserve, and without your efforts, Ben Bernanke and his cronies would have nothing to worry about.

But I’m afraid if you and I don’t act right away, all of our efforts up until now will be rendered useless.

And that’s something I’m not going to sit idly by and allow to happen.

If we’re going to stop this attempt to gut Audit the Fed, we must act before it’s too late.

So please, right now, call [your senators] and demand that they support a FULL audit of the Fed and OPPOSE all attempts to broaden the Fed’s power.

And if you can, please make your most generous contribution to help Campaign for Liberty alert millions of Americans to this battle.

But most importantly, please contact [your senators] TODAY.

    Sincerely,
    John Tate
    President

P.S. Fed-loving Senators are working behind closed doors to strip Audit the Fed out of the Financial Reform Bill while granting the Fed even more power.

That’s why it’s vital you IMMEDIATELY call [your senators] and demand they stand with the nearly 80% of Americans who support a FULL audit of the Federal Reserve.

  • Study: Where do our nav systems take us most? Walmart

Groan. Remember the $350,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom parked in front of a Walmart? Apparently it’s not an isolated case. That’s right, according to a new survey by TeleNav, most Americans use their navigation systems to find the Arkansas-based mega-store full of cheap stuff that Sam built. The great burning irony, of course, is that most cars with navigation systems are “luxury” products. Though of course that’s changing, as navigation systems are making their way into lower strata vehicles and portable units and smart phones offer full GPS at much lower prices.

After Walmart, us Americans are searching for Starbucks, Target, Best Buy and Bank of America, respectively. Full disclosure time. Have we ever used a nav system to find a Walmart? Yeah, once, but we were in Louisiana and in need of spray paint (don’t ask). We’ll sleep okay tonight. We do, however, wonder how many two-gallon pickle jars would fit inside an Audi Q7.
