  • CWA’s Peter McGuire: Europe Is Not Out Of Its Crisis, Gold Is Heading To $1300 This Year

Peter McGuire of CWA re-emphasizes the fundamental reason to be bullish on gold: all global currencies are getting printed more and more. While he acknowledges that in the meantime the US dollar is looking strong, it only has one way to go in the longterm. And while the Greece crisis may be abating, there are bigger problems (like Ireland and Spain) looming on the horizon.

“Three cousins from Hayward have been charged in San Francisco with a hate crime and assault for allegedly firing a BB rifle at the face of a man they believed was gay, an attack the men videotaped, authorities said Wednesday.

Mohammad Habibzada, Shafiq Hashemi and Sayed Bassam, all 24, are scheduled to be arraigned today in San Francisco Superior Court. They are free on $50,000 bond apiece.

The victim of Friday’s attack was walking on the 3200 block of 16th Street near Guerrero Street about 10 p.m. when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire with a BB rifle, police said. “We believe we have the evidence to show that there was targeting of individuals who they believed to be gay.” (source)

How dare these three Muslim men do this! What are the poor HuffPo readers, the DU posters and the servants of the ACLU to do with this information? They have defended the Muslims at all costs…turned a blind eye to the honor killings, the misogyny, the fundamentalism and the terrorism. But this is just going too far…how can they continue to bash Conservatives while defending Muslims with this kinda’ve stuff going on?

  • Organic Goods Going Extinct

Normally I wouldn’t have posted this story, but one of the Freepers had it filed under “Lib Suicide Watch.”

“…Some 450,000 pounds of organic coffee sit in a warehouse here, stacked neatly in 132-pound bags. It’s some of the world’s best coffee, but Gerardo De Leon can’t sell it, “The roasters don’t want to pay extra these days.”

De Leon is asking $2 per pound for the unroasted coffee, about 50 cents more than the going price. But he says he’ll soon have to sell it as conventionally grown coffee, which sells for less.

That’s why many Mesoamerican farmers here are starting to give up on organic coffee: The premium price that it used to fetch is disappearing.” (source)

Aside from not wanting to pay top dollar, maybe people have actually read the studies about organic food being no healthier than regular produce, etc.

That being said, I am a huge advocate of growing your own food (the only way to know it’s truly organic anyway).

  • The Greek Debt Crisis Was Resolved By A Confidence Game

    Greece

Thursday’s successful sale of a 5 billion euro of 10-year bonds appears to have quelled many fears about an impending crisis. The yield offered by the Greeks to bond investor was very high but it didn’t reach catastrophic levels.

So what happened? Was all the concern over Greek debt just a temporary panic? An international version of animal spirits gone scaredy-cat?

Not by a long-shot. The Greek debt problem still exists and we may well find ourselves fretting about Athens once again. But for now confidence has been restored, thanks largely to three factors.

What restored confidence was partly the adoption of an austerity budget by the Greek Parliament, which showed itself able to stand up to the public employee unions and mobs in the streets. The mobs were violent and irrational, but they were smaller than might have been expected. The whole nation did not rise up against austerity, which was a definite possibility.

The European Union, France, and Germany all refused to make explicit offers of aide. But there was a kind of winking acknowledgment that they were not going to let Greece fall out of the EU due to debt, if it came to that. And while they expressly refused direct guarantees of Greek debt or grants of rescue funds, there are rumors that they quietly assured their domestic financial institutions they would stand behind them to staunch losses from any Greek default.

The great European banks had good reason to want to take comfort from the quiet assurances of political leaders. They have huge exposures to Greek credit, most of which is not covered by credit protection–despite what you might have heard about the derivatives market. Any Greek default would have triggered huge losses. It was safer, for now, to double down and keep the Greek debt ship afloat.

Of course, that logic will sound familiar to many who recall the recent crisis on Wall Street. It was precisely this double-down through the “credit crunch” strategy that was adopted by Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Merrill Lynch. It worked quite well until suddenly it stopped working.

Will the it stop working in Europe? It’s hard to say for sure. But the huge debts of Spain loom large. Can the confidence game really get us through a Spanish crisis? There’s really no need to speculate on an answer. Before long we shall see.

  • Did Google Ignore A Takedown On The Italian Video?

As the arguments continue over the Italian verdict convicting Google execs of criminal privacy violations for a video on Google Video, there is one interesting tidbit that’s now coming out. One issue is that the judge has only released the verdict, not the full reasoning — and that’s leading to an awful lot of speculation. But now, Stefano has alerted us to reports claiming that Google had received an earlier takedown request which it had ignored. Throughout the case, Google had insisted that within hours of receiving a takedown notice from the police, it had complied. But, apparently, the prosecutors are claiming that there definitely was an earlier takedown.

So now we go back to our post from last week about the law, and whether or not Google had sufficient notification for a takedown. Part of the problem appears to be that current EU law does not clearly state the process for a valid takedown. In the US, at least, with the DMCA, the process for what counts as a valid takedown and how it needs to be delivered is extremely clear. And that way you can guarantee what is, and what is not, sufficient notice that requires a takedown. In this situation, where the law is not clear, you are left with a problem of interpreting what counts as sufficient notification.

But that brings us to the second issue: even if Google was notified, but somehow missed the notification, does that then mean that it makes sense to convict three totally unrelated executives of criminal charges? It still sounds like that would be a massive leap. At worst — if we take as a given (and I’m not saying it’s true, but for sake of argument, let’s say it was true) that Google was sent a takedown notice which it ignored — I would think that it would make sense to fine Google and require it to have a clear process for handling takedowns. To go beyond that and criminally charge and convict three totally unrelated execs because it took a second notice to get the video taken down seems pretty ridiculous.

It seems the now classic infographic movie “Google Master Plan” from early 2007 is now finally outdated, as the main allegations have been recently updated by another infographically-style film, aptly titled The Beast File: Google [abc.net.au] (movie not viewable outside Australia, but watch a YouTube version below).

The new movie, which itself seems to be inspired by the visual zooming effects from the presentation software Prezi, defines Google as an advertising giant whose main goal is to track users and deliver targeted ads.

  • Geely boss says Volvo talks are on track, no official deal yet

Geely Auto has yet to sign an agreement in its deal to acquire Volvo from Ford Motors, but says that its plan to purchase is still on track. Geely had originally planned to complete the purchase by May.

“We haven’t reached a final agreement so far,” said company chairman Li Shufiu.

The Chinese automaker had planned to pull the Swedish manufacturer into black ink by 2011, and had obtained some regulatory approvals needed to finalize the deal. These clearances, or lack thereof, had blacked the sale of GM’s Hummer to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., and are crucial to any automotive deal.

  • The Final Countdown: Obamacare Now Has 10 Days To Live Or Die

The great healthcare debate is almost over.

The White House has said it wants a vote by March 18, which means that as of today there are exactly 10 days left. By the end of this week, there’s a good chance we’ll know whether the decrepit US healthcare system is about to go a radical overhaul, or whether the status quo will remain.

As The Hill notes, March 18 is the eve of the NCAA tournament, and it’s also when Obama will leave on an overseas trip, so the thinking is that if there’s no deal by then, the whole thing is shot, lost to a President that’s not around, and a basketball tournament that will suck any bit of spare attention from this wonky subject.

  • Speculators Bid Up AMBAC CDS, As Fears Of A Municipal Default Wave Proliferate

    california education

Once again, fears are being raised about monoline insurer Ambac’s ability to weather the storm.

    Here’s the latest from DebtWire:

The CDS market is signaling increased fears that Ambac operating company Ambac Assurance will enter receivership within the year as fear of a municipal bond crisis spreads.
The cost of short-term credit default swaps written on Ambac’s holding company Ambac Financial widened significantly in February relative to the price of protection on Ambac Assurance. Investors repriced the differential between the credits on growing expectations that the opco will enter receivership this year, according to two CDS traders and three analysts.

Previously, investors believed that state regulators might order American Assurance to stop paying out
insurance claims but would balk at placing the company in receivership. Under that scenario, the holdco would survive on dividends from the opco until at least 2011 that would be cut off immediately in a receivership scenario.

The bankruptcy filing in February of Las Vegas Monorail Corporation (LVMC) and the prospect of proliferating municipal defaults forced fund managers to revisit those assumptions.

Two investors who said that they placed a low probability on receivership in November indicated in interviews this week that they believe the chance of receivership has increased. Both sources cited fear of a municipal default epidemic and the opacity of Ambac’s finances as contributing factors.
“The logic is that the holdco wouldn’t survive a receivership at the opco,” said a buysider.

  • Information and Advice: Teresa Brett

    Teresa+Robin-Brett-SMALL2

Teresa and her husband care for their son Robin, who has a rare health disorder and learning disabilities. Teresa found it difficult to find information and advice to help Robin, so she has set up an organisation with other parents to help them get the support they need.

Teresa Brett lives in Swindon with her husband and one of her two sons, Robin. Robin has health problems and an undiagnosed learning disability. Their other son David, who is severely dyslexic and receiving Disability Living Allowance himself, also spends a lot of time at home as he helps to care for Robin.

Robin is 14 and attends a special school 16 miles away in Wantage, the closest they could find. He enjoys trips out with his family at the weekend, especially riding on buses, and he goes to an after school club every weekday.

“He loves the club with the other children.  He loves making people laugh and if any of the other children are a bit shy, he encourages them.  He’s a born leader,” says Teresa.

Teresa has always found it a struggle to get information and advice to help her and her family care for Robin. It took a long time to find out about the financial support they were entitled to, and in many cases they have come across information by word of mouth, or by chance. For example they only learned about Disability Living Allowance from Swindon Portage, a specialist pre-school teaching service.

“On one occasion, while I was at the Sadler Unit in Swindon, a paediatric medical assessment unit, I found a copy of a newsletter produced by CLIMB (Children Living with Inherited Metabolic Diseases) lying about, with my son’s condition listed on the back. I didn’t know there was a support group, and he was well over two by then. I could have really done with that support group from the word go,” says Teresa.

When Teresa found out about the local Learning Disabilities Community Nurse, it made a big difference.  He has trained Teresa in giving Robin vital injections in an emergency, and helps with Robin’s other health issues. He provides support on managing Robin’s learning disability and points Teresa and her family to additional support and information.

“We see him every month, or every other month.  If I want to know something and can’t find out myself I often ask him,” says Teresa.  “He covers a whole spectrum of things.  They’re a great source of information.”

Teresa felt that although there were organisations to support people with recognised disorders, there was nothing for people like Robin whose learning disability is undiagnosed.  So together with other local parents, they set up Swindon Children Without a Diagnosis (SCWAD), and share information and help support other parents who are in similar situations.

“We’ve got all kinds of people in SCWAD and some of those parents have got learning problems themselves.  We’re there to support everybody at whatever level they need it really. We can all do a little bit to help each other,” says Teresa.

Teresa is aware that they will soon need to start planning for Robin’s future after he leaves school.  She has started attending meetings of the local parent advisory group, which provides information about the process of transition from children’s services to adult services.

She also has annual review meetings, which involve professionals from a range of different services, including social care, education, and health, to help plan for his needs. Teresa knows that planning for the future will be one of the big challenges for the next few years.

“We don’t know what is going to happen when he leaves school, but he needs structure, he needs a social life. We can’t make uninformed decisions, it’s just getting the information.  That’s what we’re trying to do.”

  • Speech To The House Of Lords, London, Friday, March 5, 2010

    By Geert Wilders

    TonyfromOz prefaces …..

Here at PA Pundits, we have followed the progress of Geert Wilders and to see that he is finally gaining some acceptance, both politically, and also for his film is encouraging. If you wish to view the video mentioned here in the opening lines of his speech, this is the link that will take you to an explanatory post that includes the short video.

Thank you. It is great to be back in London. And it is great that this time, I got to see more of this wonderful city than just the detention centre at Heathrow Airport.

Today I stand before you, in this extraordinary place. Indeed, this is a sacred place. This is, as Malcolm always says, the mother of all Parliaments, I am deeply humbled to have the opportunity to speak before you.

Thank you Lord Pearson and Lady Cox for your invitation and showing my film Fitna. Thank you my friends for inviting me.

I first have great news. Last Wednesday, city council elections were held in the Netherlands. And for the first time my party, the Freedom Party, took part in these local elections. We participated in two cities. In Almere, one of the largest Dutch cities. And in The Hague, the third largest city; home of the government, the parliament and the queen. And, we did great! In one fell swoop my party became the largest party in Almere and the second largest party in The Hague. Great news for the Freedom Party and even better news for the people of these two beautiful cities.

And I have more good news. Two weeks ago, the Dutch government collapsed. In June we will have parliamentary elections. And the future for the Freedom Party looks great. According to some polls we will become the largest party in the Netherlands. I want to be modest, but who knows, I might even be Prime Minister in a few months time!

Ladies and gentlemen, not far from here stands a statue of the greatest Prime Minister your country ever had. And I would like to quote him here today: “Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. No stronger retrograde force exists in the World. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step (…) the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.” These words are from none other than Winston Churchill wrote this in his book The River War from 1899.

    Churchill was right.

Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t have a problem and my party does not have a problem with Muslims as such. There are many moderate Muslims. The majority of Muslims are law-abiding citizens and want to live a peaceful life as you and I do. I know that. That is why I always make a clear distinction between the people, the Muslims, and the ideology, between Islam and Muslims. There are many moderate Muslims, but there is no such thing as a moderate Islam.

Islam strives for world domination. The Koran commands Muslims to exercise jihad. The Koran commands Muslims to establish shariah law. The Koran commands Muslims to impose Islam on the entire world.

As former Turkish Prime Minister Erbakan said: “The whole of Europe will become Islamic. We will conquer Rome.” End of quote.

Libyan dictator Gaddafi said: “There are tens of millions of Muslims in the European continent today and their number is on the increase. This is the clear indication that the European continent will be converted into Islam. Europe will one day soon be a Muslim continent.” End of quote. Indeed, for once in his life, Gaddafi was telling the truth. Because, remember: mass immigration and demographics is destiny!

Islam is merely not a religion, it is mainly a totalitarian ideology. Islam wants to dominate all aspects of life, from the cradle to the grave. Shariah law is a law that controls every detail of life in a Islamic society. From civic and family law to criminal law. It determines how one should eat, dress and even use the toilet. Oppression of women is good, drinking alcohol is bad.

I believe that Islam is not compatible with our Western way of life. Islam is a threat to Western values. The equality of men and women, the equality of homosexuals and heterosexuals, the separation of church and state, freedom of speech, they are all under pressure because of Islamization. Ladies and gentlemen: Islam and freedom, Islam and democracy are not compatible. It are (sic) opposite values.

No wonder that Winston Churchill called Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf “the new Koran of faith and war, turgid, verbose, shapeless, but pregnant with its message.” As you know, Churchill made this comparison, between the Koran and Mein Kampf, in his book The Second World War, a masterpiece, for which, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Churchill’s comparison of the Koran and Mein Kampf is absolutely spot on. The core of the Koran is the call to jihad. Jihad means a lot of things and is Arabic for battle. Kampf is German for battle. Jihad and kampf mean exactly the same.

Islam means submission, there cannot be any mistake about its goal. That’s a given. The question is whether we in Europe and you in Britain, with your glorious past, will submit or stand firm for your heritage.

We see Islam taking off in the West at an incredible pace. Europe is Islamizing rapidly. A lot of European cities have enormous Islamic concentrations. Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Berlin are just a few examples. In some parts of these cities, Islamic regulations are already being enforced. Women’s rights are being destroyed. Burqa’s, headscarves, polygamy, female genital mutilation, honour-killings. Women have to go to separate swimming classes, don’t get a handshake. In many European cities there is already apartheid. Jews, in an increasing number, are leaving Europe.

As you undoubtedly all know, better then I do, also in your country the mass immigration and Islamization has rapidly increased. This has put an enormous pressure on your British society. Look what is happening in for example Birmingham, Leeds, Bradford and here in London. British politicians who have forgotten about Winston Churchill have now taken the path of least resistance. They have given up. They have given in.

Last year, my party has requested the Dutch government to make a cost-benefit analysis of the mass immigration. But the government refused to give us an answer. Why? Because it is afraid of the truth. The signs are not good. A Dutch weekly magazine – Elsevier – calculated costs to exceed 200 billion Euros. Last year alone, they came with an amount of 13 billion euros. More calculations have been made in Europe: According to the Danish national bank, every Danish immigrant from an Islamic country is costing the Danish state more than 300 thousand euros. You see the same in Norway and France. The conclusion that can be drawn from this: Europe is getting more impoverished by the day. More impoverished thanks to mass immigration. More impoverished thanks to demographics. And the leftists are thrilled.

I don’t know whether it is true, but in several British newspapers I read that Labour opened the door to mass immigration in a deliberate policy to change the social structures of the UK. Andrew Neather, a former government advisor and speech writer for Tony Blair and Jack Straw, said the aim of Labour’s immigration strategy was, and I quote, to “rub the Right’s nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date.” If this is true, this is symptomatic of the Left.

Ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake: The left is facilitating Islamization. Leftists, liberals, are cheering for every new shariah bank being created, for every new Shariah mortgage, for every new Islamic school, for every new Shariah court. Leftists consider Islam as being equal to our own culture. Shariah law or democracy? Islam or freedom? It doesn’t really matter to them. But it does matter to us. The entire leftist elite is guilty of practising cultural relativism. Universities, churches, trade unions, the media, politicians. They are all betraying our hard-won liberties.

Why I ask myself, why have the Leftists and liberals stopped to fight for them? Once the Leftists stood on the barricades for women’s rights. But where are they today? Where are they in 2010? They are looking the other way. Because they are addicted to cultural relativism and dependent on the Muslim vote. They are dependent on mass-immigration.

Thank heavens Jacqui Smith isn’t in office anymore. It was a victory for free speech that a UK judge brushed aside her decision to refuse me entry to your country last year. I hope that the judges in my home country are at least as wise and will acquit me of all charges, later this year in the Netherlands.

Unfortunately, so far they have not done so well. For they do not want to hear the truth about Islam, nor are they interested to hear the opinion of top class legal experts in the field of freedom of expression. Last month in a preliminary session the Court refused fifteen of the eighteen expert-witnesses I had requested to be summoned.

Only three expert witnesses are allowed to be heard. Fortunately, my dear friend and heroic American psychiatrist Dr. Wafa Sultan is one of them. But their testimony will be heard behind closed doors. Apparently the truth about Islam must not be told in public, the truth about Islam must remain secret.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m being prosecuted for my political beliefs. We know political prosecution to exist in countries in the Middle East, like Iran and Saudi-Arabia, but never in Europe, never in the Netherlands.

I’m being prosecuted for comparing the Koran to Mein Kampf. Ridiculous. I wonder if Britain will ever put the beliefs of Winston Churchill on trial… Ladies and gentlemen, the political trial that is held against me has to stop.

But it is not all about me, not about Geert Wilders. Free speech is under attack. Let me give you a few other examples. As you perhaps know, one of my heroes, the Italian author Oriana Fallaci had to live in fear of extradition to Switzerland because of her anti-Islam book ‘The Rage and the Pride’. The Dutch cartoonist Nekschot was arrested in his home in Amsterdam by 10 police men because of his anti-Islam drawings. Here in Britain, the American author Rachel Ehrenfeld was sued by a Saudi businessman for defamation. In the Netherlands Ayaan Hirsi Ali and in Australia two Christian pastors were sued. I could go on and on. Ladies and gentlemen, all throughout the West freedom loving people are facing this ongoing ‘legal jihad’. This is Islamic “lawfare.” And, ladies and gentlemen, not long ago the Danish cartoonist Westergaard was almost assassinated for his cartoons.

Ladies and gentlemen, we should defend the right to freedom of speech. With all our strength. With all our might. Free speech is the most important of our many liberties. Free speech is the cornerstone of our modern societies. Freedom of speech is the breath of our democracy, without freedom of speech our way of life our freedom will be gone.

I believe it is our obligation to preserve the inheritance of the brave young soldiers that stormed the beaches of Normandy. That liberated Europe from tyranny. These heroes cannot have died for nothing. It is our obligation to defend freedom of speech. As George Orwell said: “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe in another policy, it is time for change. We must make haste. We can’t wait any longer. Time is running out. If I may quote one of my favorite American presidents: Ronald Reagan once said: “We need to act today, to preserve tomorrow”. That is why I propose the following measures, I only mention a few, in order to preserve our freedom:

First, we will have to defend freedom of speech. It is the most important of our liberties. In Europe and certainly in the Netherlands, we need something like the American First Amendment.

Second, we will have to end and get rid of cultural relativism. To the cultural relativists, the Shariah socialists, I proudly say: Our Western culture is far superior to the Islamic culture. Don’t be afraid to say it. You are not a racist when you say that our own culture is better.

Third, we will have to stop mass immigration from Islamic countries. Because more Islam means less freedom.

Fourth, we will have to expel criminal immigrants and, following denaturalization, we will have to expel criminals with a dual nationality. And there are many of them in my country.

Fifth, we will have to forbid the construction of new mosques. There is enough Islam in Europe. Especially since Christians in Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Indonesia are mistreated, there should be a mosque building-stop in the West.

And last but not least, we will have to get rid of all those so-called leaders. I said it before: Fewer Chamberlains, more Churchills. Let’s elect real leaders.

Ladies and gentlemen. To the previous generation, that of my parents, the word “London” is synonymous with hope and freedom. When my country was occupied by the national-socialists the BBC offered a daily glimpse of hope in my country, in the darkness of Nazi tyranny. Millions of my fellow country men listened to it, underground. The words ‘This is London’ were a symbol for a better world coming soon.

What will be broadcasted forty years from now? Will it still be “This is London”? Or will it be “This is Londonistan”? Will it bring us hope? Or will it signal the values of Mecca and Medina? Will Britain offer submission or perseverance? Freedom or slavery? The choice is yours. And in the Netherlands the choice is ours.

Ladies and gentlemen, we will never apologize for being free. We will and should never give in. And, indeed, as one of your former leaders said: We will never surrender.
Freedom must prevail, and freedom will prevail.

    Thank you very much.

Geert Wilders is a Dutch Member of Parliament and leader of the Dutch Freedom Party.

  • Chrome Gets 3,000 Extensions, Gaining On Firefox

Tucked away in a Google Chrome status update post for developers on the official Chromium blog is one tidbit of information that is easy to underestimate. • Ziua Femeilor
