Windows Mobile doing pretty well, gaining marketshare in latin America
Not only has Windows Phones been doing well in America, it seems Latin America is also seeing a market growth. The people at BNAmericas recently interviewed Doug Smith, Microsoft’s Latin American director of mobile communications. The interview touched on many aspects of Windows Phones, including the availability of Windows Phones 7 Series to Latin America, and the current market share of Windows Phones.
Doug had much to say about Windows Mobile’s market share in that region, and he said it proudly. From analyst in the area, it seems Windows Mobile and Blackberry are neck and neck in market share.Last month a report showed Windows Phones at 26% share in Brazil and 24% in Mexico. Those numbers mean a lot being that those countries are the two largest Latin America markets, and so that is a big accomplishment.
After all this I am sure Microsoft will really put it into high gear, because the world is ready for Windows Phones, and if they do it in good time, I am sure they can take over the worlds market share.
Here is the full interview:
BNamericas: When will Windows Mobile 7 be available in Latin America, and what are the differences with 6.5?
Smith: It will be available in Latin America during the holiday of 2010, consistent with our global announcement.
There are significant differences between 6.5 and 7. We made a huge bet on the platform itself and built it from the ground up. With the user interface, users have quick, glanceable information with real-time services connected to it, with Xbox Live to build a gaming solution on the platform, to music integrated with our Zune service.
We’re offering consumers a new experience, different to what’s on the market today, changing the experience from icon-based phones today.
There’s a commonality of applications, having to double click to get information, etc, and we’re trying to change that. The information is always being updated and people have that Zune-like experience where people can go from one hub to the other. A lot of the work was ensuring that the platform was built for the future.
BNamericas: How has the development of Windows 6.5 gone?
Smith: We have Windows Phone 6.5 in Argentina and Brazil and others in the region – with three vendors, Samsung, LG and HDC. We still have a long runway for Windows 6.5 development before the 7 launch in holiday 2010.
BNamericas: What about numbers in terms of sales in the region?
Smith: It’s still a little early to talk numbers, we just announced in December. It’d be better to look in about six months to see how we’re doing.
What I can tell you, referring back to IDC data, is that we continue to grow our market share presence in Latin America. IDC saw two [companies] in the smartphone market grow in the past 12 months, and that was Microsoft and Blackberry. We continue to feel good about our sales and we’re transitioning to 6.5 with manufacturers in a handful of countries. We have to continue with that transition. 6.5 will be the dominant platform for us as we conclude 2010, when we launch 7.
Last quarter, IDC had us at a 26% share in Brazil and 24% in Mexico – the two largest markets in Latin America.

Video: Chip Foose gets agricultural, hot rods a John Deere 4020
Chip Foose-customized John Deere 4020 tractor – Click above to watch “making of” videos after the jumpWhile Chip Foose’s bread and butter is rodding, building and customizing cars – often models that have distinct and fervent followings, like Camaros and Mustangs – it would appear that he’s more than happy to tackle projects outside that comfort zone as well. Foose has just completed a special project for John Deere (a brand whose followers are as dedicated as any Ford or Chevy might have), and the result is going to be given away.
The tractor you see above spent decades as a workhorse like any other John Deere 4020 (a trendsetting model manufactured from 1963 to ’72), before it underwent transformation in Foose’s shop. Frankly, we think it’s beautiful. Now, Lord knows we wouldn’t know what to do with it if we were to win it, but we’re enamored enough that we actually Googled to see where our local Deere dealer is, so that we might actually enter the sweepstakes. BOUNCE BACK TIP: Happiness is a choice, not just a matter of good luck/genes..

According to researchers at The Happiness Project in the U.K., only 50% of our brain’s processing system is inherited. So whether or not you lean more toward gloom or glee has something to do with Mom and Dad and all those nutty ancestors, but it also has something to do with YOU! You can’t control your genes, but here’s what you can control:
You can actually choose to be happy or, at least, happier. Easier said than done, right? Well, positive psychologist Dr. Jonathan Haidt has devised a handy-dandy formula for how to be happy: Calculators out!
H = S + C + V
H = level of happiness
S = set point for happiness
C = current conditions
V = voluntary activities
In other words, your happiness level is a potent mix of how naturally happy you are combined with whatever’s going on in your life right now that affects your happiness, plus those voluntary activities you choose to fill your life with. (There’s that word choose again!)
Happiness Assignment: If your happiness level isn’t registering high enough because current conditions are dragging you down, forget about what you can’t control and focus on doing some really fun and fulfilling V’s.

What happened to the LG eXpo?
Forbes recently asked that question, and received some pretty straight answers from everyone but At&t. The LG eXpo aka Projector phone was released last year to a country filled with excitement and anticipation. The public seemed excitedly awaiting the so called projector phones. Many had their chance at it until late last year. The device seemed to vanished into thin air, so we ask, What happened to the LG eXpo.The report Forbes put together gives us one answer, talk to LG. LG seems to be experiencing some major problems with their production line. The device has hit a building block due to ”antenna issues” says Art Stewart vice president of wireless products at sensor maker AuthenTec.
That problem does not seem to have been resolved so far because Lg and At&t are still telling us the same story, out of stock due to “strong demand”. “We are working with all our partners to address this issue and expect to have product available soon,” is what At&t is saying, and lets all hope that soon is not too late.
The device has been out of the market for over two months now, and with all this, it does not seem like it will be making a quick return back on shelves. Do you readers think the device is even relevant from this point and the expected June re release date that amazon has set? comment below

Ethiopian ‘aid for arms’ story sparks storm
The BBC sparked a storm this week with a story claiming millions of dollars sent to help starving people in Ethiopia's 1980s famine were used to buy arms by rebels.
The rebels, who now dominate Ethiopia's government, and some aid groups dismissed the story. Bob Geldof, the Irish rock star who helped raise a lot of the money in the 80s with his Live Aid campaign, said it was “simply not the case”. Britain's Independent newspaper published a blog saying the claim was a slur, cooked up by enemies of Ethiopia's government ahead of looming elections.
Ethiopian blog Ethiopian Recycler, clearly not fan of the country's current regime, begged to differ and defended the BBC story in two posts Aid money, arms, and Sir Bob Geldof and Live Aid money did pay for weapons:
Millions of aid money raised in the 1980s was indeed diverted to buy arms and had provided rebel leaders with a lifestyle that was inhuman and extravagant even by today's standards. That is no news. Thousands of the hungry from Tigray were forced to trek to the Sudan in the course of which many perished. And hundreds that were resettled in southwestern Ethiopia were returned to Tigray through the Sudan [hundreds of which perished en route]. That is no news either. The fact that yesterday's BBC report is followed by the question whether this scam ever took place is simply absurd.
Another aspect of Ethiopia's relationship with the aid industry came under the spotlight in an article highlighted by Addis Ababa-based blogger Owen Barder. Aid blog Hand Relief International cast an ironic eye over the difference between the luxury of the capital's Sheraton hotel, where many aid officials stay, and the visible poverty just outside its walls:
One of the meetings I attended last week was in Addis Ababa where my stay in the dignified Sheraton Hotel was slightly spoiled by the vista behind the reassuring fence, where people in rags seemed in general to be enjoying slightly less comfort … Thankfully, the local drought did not affect the water pressure at the fountain systems around the hotel where we took the edge off with regular dips in the heated pool, usually before high tea. The theme of the meeting was “Drought and Famine – HRI opportunities for 2010″
“Why did it take a quarter of a century for the truth to be told publicly,” wonders Samuel Ketema at ABBAY Media: The Ethiopian Information Bank:
If there is one thing that people should be surprised about, it must be why it took a quarter of a century for the truth to be told publicly. Otherwise, particularly the deception of the TPLF is something that the Ethiopian public know them for. How REST (Relief Society of Tigray), which is a multibillion conglomerate today, was formed is not such a big secret to the Ethiopian public. Then there is also what the CIA knew from the beginning and the American government supported it.
The two former rebel commanders, who exposed this truth, mentioned this before in different interviews they gave in Amharic. Nothing is new about this. How did TPLF win the largest and well equipped army in sub-Saharan Africa then? Meles Zenawi, as many in the west, including Bob Geldof and Bono described him, is a very smart guy, actually much smarter than his admirers in the west can understand.
A reader at Ethiopian Curret Affairs Discussion Forum, Sarah, notes that Ethiopians were not surprised by the news:
Ethiopians who knows the nature of the ruling party in Ethiopia wasn’t surprised by the news at all what surprised them was how comes the western medias start talking? and Bob Geldof acting like the Ethiopian dictators lire cadres.
The “aid for arms” story, argues Mebre, is very well known all over Ethiopia:
The story you mentioned is very well known all over Ethiopia but it gives a factual evidence for the West that a dictator that do not have a moral character for his own people can give peace prosperity and freedom to the nation.We all insist the West that don’t armed dictators….give support for the poor…the poor needs freedom than anything…..

Sunday Music – Live And Let Die
Today’s music video is ‘Live And Let Die’ from Wings.
This video was posted to You Tube by citycity49
In 1973, during the sessions for the band’s ‘Red Rose Speedway’ album, Wings recorded this theme for the new James Bond movie, ‘Live And Let Die’. This was the first Bond movie with Roger Moore playing Bond. Again, as with most of the clips I select for Sunday Music, this song also has some history, so I had to search for that original theme from the Movie, as most live versions of the band performing the song, even though the same, are different from this original clip, which does have some interesting history attached to it. The intro is a little cheesy I know but the story concerns what happened at the end of the video.
Wings formed in 1971 following the break up of The Beatles. Paul was working on his first eponymous solo album at the time, with his wife Linda, and he played every instrument on every track on that first album. For his second album, ‘Ram’, he used a session guitarist, and this album produced the wonderful song, ‘Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey’, his first Number One song following his time with The Beatles. The third album was ‘Wild Life’, the first actually to use the band name Wings. He was joined on this album by ex Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine, and these three then formed the core of a band that went though numerous line up changes during its following history. Also around this time he released two singles which sold well, and these were included on the remixed version of this album released in 1993. Those two songs were ‘Give Ireland Back To The Irish’, and the quirky redo of the nursery rhyme ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’. Both singles did quite well on the charts despite the Irish song being banned outright by all radio stations in the UK because of the situation in Northern Ireland.
In 1972, the band released its fourth album, ‘Red Rose Speedway’ which is one of my favourite albums. The arrangements for most of the songs seem to be so simple in structure, but in the main are quite complicated as songs blend in together. His big song from this album was the romantic ballad ‘My Love’ which was a major smash hit for the band.
Paul was approached by George Martin to see if he would do the theme for the new Bond movie, and this is the song they came up with. a song that also performed well for the band, and one that never made it onto a studio album.
The story with respect to this video happens right at the end of the clip. In keeping with the Bond theme, and also in reference to Mad Magazine’s Spy vs Spy series, the band included an image of a spy dressed in the requisite trench coat skulking about in the upper reaches of the studio where the clip was being performed live by the band. This ’spy’ approaches a plunger to set off an explosion. The explosion was actually on the set. Armorers had wired up a small charge in Paul’s Grand Piano that he was playing for the song. At the end, and timed to coincide with the ‘Spy’ depressing the plunger, Paul would hit a key on the piano that was wired up to detonate the small charge, designed to produce a small flashbang with a lot of smoke and blow off the side of the piano for effect. However, the charge was grossly over calculated and the resultant explosion actually blew Paul right off his seat, and almost blew the piano apart. There is some slow motion footage of the actual explosion, and as harmless as it might actually appear, it was in fact quite a substantial explosion. In fact, Paul had problems for some time after this with his hearing, and it was thought that the damage might be permanent, luckily not proving so.
The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Movie themes, but the award that year went to ‘The Way We Were’.
The use of pyrotechnics for this clip was a new thing, and one that the band included for all their later live performance concerts, where this song was always a huge hit, with the fireworks display as part of the song, albeit without the exploding piano. Even though this song never appeared on any studio album, it has appeared on nearly every live album the band has recorded.
The band’s next album was ‘Band On The Run’, recorded wholly in Lagos Nigeria, an unheard of thing for a major band to do, because recording facilities here were positively backwards, primitive when compared to the direction that bands were going, moving into as much state of the art equipment as possible. Despite that, this album was probably received better than any Wings album, and produced three Number One songs.
The next major album from the band was ‘Venus And Mars’.
Why I included some of that history following up from today’s clip was as a lead in to this wonderful song taken from that ‘Venus And Mars’ album. As is mostly the case, the album is the vehicle for one and sometimes more than one song to be released as singles for regular airplay, and more often than not, there are other really good songs on the album that are rarely heard, if at all. Such is the case with this wonderful song, again, as was sometimes the way of McCartney to blend songs together, and in this case it is the clever mixing of two titles, ‘Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People’. There is no clip of this song being performed live, and I seriously doubt it would have ever made it to a concert playlist for the band. This clip here is a compilation of images set over the song, and is very nicely treated.

As is nearly always the case, some songs that may seem obscure are the ones that stay with you.
