  • HTC HD Mini makes the Big apperance on Amazon UK

Just last month the HTC HD Mini was announced at MWC, and already Amazon UK has a price and date. The information just recent popped up on their site, and it seems the HD Mini will be prices at a surprisingly decent 369 pounds which translates to $556USD. The price is just a few short of the HD2, but you get a little less screen and a little less worries.

Amazon is setting the release date to be April 14, 2010, which is quite a while away if you think about it. MIX is just in 2 weeks and that seems ages away. The UK residents can rest assured that they will be getting free shipping for their new device.

To recap on some features, the device has a 3.2” inch HVGA capacitive display, 600mhz processor, Sense UI, Windows Phones 6.5 and some other pretty standard features. If you have been in the market for a smaller device with a capacitive display, this is this could just very well be your next buy.

  • Take the Outpost Republican Leadership Survey

03.06.10 11:19 AM posted by Drew McKissick

    What difference a year makes!

We’re a long way from where we were after "The One" took office.* The economy is still in the tank, most of his agenda is stalled (thankfully), and his polling numbers continue to head south.

For Republicans, things are looking up as we approach the mid-term elections.

But how should Repubicans continue to deal with Obama?* Who would you like to see in a leadership role?* What direction should the party take overall?* Where are the best Republican ideas coming from?

    All important questions.

The Republican Leadership Survey is an ongoing project we use to take the pulse of the conservative base, and we want to add your opinions to the mix.

So if you haven’t taken the survey yet, click here and do so today. Then pass it on to someone else. read more »

  • You Could Not Make It Up: Climate change mythbuster, News Of The World

Article Tags: You could not make it up

THE News of the World is urging every one of our eight million readers to back the WWF’s Earth Hour this month.

By switching off lights for an hour at 8.30pm on March 27 you’ll remind politicians just how important climate change is.

Here, WWF’s head of climate change KEITH ALLOTT answers critics who claim it is just a myth.

MYTH: Climate change is not really happening.

BUSTED: The planet’s climate has changed throughout its history. It can be affected by natural events like volcanos. But it’s clear that the Earth is warming and that natural factors are not responsible.

There’s very solid evidence that man-made “greenhouse” gases, mainly CO2, are the cause and that warming will become dangerous unless we act quickly to cut emissions.

MYTH: The jury is still out on climate change because there is disagreement about whether it is caused by humans.

BUSTED: Normally scientists like to argue and seldom agree. But the fact that the vast majority agree climate change is happening and humans are behind it speaks volumes. Ignoring this huge risk to the planet would be irresponsible.

Some people suggest it is easier to adapt to a warming planet rather than cut greenhouse gas emissions. We will definitely need to cope with some big changes – but if the world warms too much or too quickly it could become very difficult or impossible to adapt.

  • Ian McEwan lampoons fellow luminaries on climate trip, Sunday Times

    Article Tags: Book, Ian McEwan

I just noticed this comment from an article from the Sunday Times by Maurice Chittenden

IT was meant to be a cultural response to climate change. The mission: charter a sailing boat in the Arctic and take 12 leading artists and writers to ponder on the perils of climate change in their work.

Unfortunately, no one seems to have explained the plot to Ian McEwan, the novelist. His new work, Solar, sends up the expedition with such glee that it has received a frosty reception from some of his fellow adventurers.

So I thought I would look at the Ian McEwan site and see what all the fuss is about, and here is what I found…..

Image AttachmentRandom House is delighted to announce the publication of a new novel by Ian McEwan, Solar.

Solar is an engrossing and satirical novel which focuses on climate change and will be published on 18 March 2010. This story – of one man’s ambitions and self-deceptions – is a stylish new work by one of the word’s greatest living writers.

Michael Beard is in his late fifties; bald, overweight, unprepossessing – a Nobel prize-winning physicist whose best work is behind him. Trading on his reputation, he speaks for enormous fees, lends his name to the letterheads of renowned scientific institutions and half-heartedly heads a government-backed initiative tackling global warming. An inveterate philanderer, Beard finds his fifth marriage floundering. When Beard’s professional and personal worlds are entwined in a freak accident, an opportunity presents itself, a chance for Beard to extricate himself from his marital mess, reinvigorate his career and very possibly save the world from environmental disaster.

Dan Franklin, Publisher, comments: ‘Solar is a novel about one of the most serious threats to our world – global warming – but is also very, very funny. It shows a fresh side to Ian McEwan’s work, that he’s a comic writer of genius.’

I look forward to reading this, good luck Ian

    Article Tags: World Temperatures

    article image

Sea ice extent for the past 5 years (in million km2) for the northern hemisphere, as a function of date.

Arctic Sea Ice Extent Highest in 6 Years

From the Copenhagen Centre for Ocean and Ice of the Danish Meteorological Institute

Total sea ice extent on the northern hemisphere since 2005. The ice extent values are calculated from the ice type data from the Ocean and Sea Ice, Satellite Application Facility (OSISAF), where areas with ice concentration higher than 30% are classified as ice.

The total area of sea ice is the sum of First Year Ice (FYI), Multi Year Ice (MYI) and the area of ambiguous ice types, from the OSISAF ice type product. However, the total estimated ice area is underestimated due to unclassified coastal regions where mixed land/sea pixels confuse the applied ice type algorithm. The shown sea ice extent values are therefore recommended be used qualitatively in relation to ice extent values from other years shown in the figure. In 2010 sea ice climatology and anomaly data will be available here.

Article Tags: Front Page News, Steven F. Hayward

Image AttachmentThe meltdown of the climate campaign.

It is increasingly clear that the leak of the internal emails and documents of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in November has done for the climate change debate what the Pentagon Papers did for the Vietnam war debate 40 years ago—changed the narrative decisively. Additional revelations of unethical behavior, errors, and serial exaggeration in climate science are rolling out on an almost daily basis, and there is good reason to expect more.

The U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), hitherto the gold standard in climate science, is under fire for shoddy work and facing calls for a serious shakeup. The U.S. Climate Action Partnership, the self-serving coalition of environmentalists and big business hoping to create a carbon cartel, is falling apart in the wake of the collapse of any prospect of enacting cap and trade in Congress. Meanwhile, the climate campaign’s fallback plan to have the EPA regulate greenhouse gas emissions through the cumbersome Clean Air Act is generating bipartisan opposition. The British media—even the left-leaning, climate alarmists of the Guardian and BBC—are turning on the climate campaign with a vengeance. The somnolent American media, which have done as poor a job reporting about climate change as they did on John Edwards, have largely averted their gaze from the inconvenient meltdown of the climate campaign, but the rock solid edifice in the newsrooms is cracking. Al Gore was conspicuously missing in action before surfacing with a long article in the New York Times on February 28, reiterating his familiar parade of horribles: The sea level will rise! Monster storms! Climate refugees in the hundreds of millions! Political chaos the world over! It was the rhetorical equivalent of stamping his feet and saying “It is too so!” In a sign of how dramatic the reversal of fortune has been for the climate campaign, it is now James Inhofe, the leading climate skeptic in the Senate, who is eager to have Gore testify before Congress.

  • Floods In Australia

In the last week, there has been a major flood event in Australia, mainly located in my home State of Queensland, but also spreading down the Eastern part of the Continent, down into Victoria and also into South Australia.

This is a link to just one of the news articles. I have included this one because in the article under the small image slide show at that page are further links to videos of news bulletins, and also a photo gallery of images of the flooded areas. What may also be interesting is to take some of those video links to hear some of those wonderful Western Queensland accents.

As I have mentioned earlier, Australia covers a vast area, and is around the same size as is Mainland U.S.A.

My home State of Queensland is the second largest State by area in Australia, and it is two and one half times the size of Texas, and covers an area of around 670,000 Square Miles.

The flood has left an area in the South West of our State underwater as Rivers fill, flow very slowly downstream and spread out covering a vast area. That area now under water is around 15% of the whole State. When said blandly like that in percentage levels, it may not sound much, but consider this. That area now under water is around 95,000 square miles, or around the same size as the State of Wyoming. Most of this area is what is euphemistically called ‘The Outback’, where it is always exceedingly dry.

In some areas this flood has surpassed the previous worst flood of 1890, as records for more recent floods were surpassed very early as the waters rose.

Some places received more rain over two days than in the whole of last year, and some areas received that rain a couple of hours. Quite a number of small to medium sized towns are having major flooding in the towns, and in some cases nearly the whole town has had to be evacuated to higher ground as Emergency services offer assistance, and, as is the case in most of these Country towns, everyone gets in together to all help each other out.

The River systems in this area of the State mostly all flow to the South, so there is some hope that this event will lead to good inflows into the huge Darling River and then into the Murray as far away as Victoria. This Murray Darling Basin is one the World’s major River systems and has been in particular stress over the last Decade.

These flood waters are very slow flowing as they move to the South, and in some cases it will be almost months before this peak in Queensland will reach those lower areas.

The heavy rain was part of a major and slow moving rain depression that slowly moved East after forming in that Western region. It has also lead to widespread rain events in the South East of the State around the State Capital Brisbane. What this has done is to cause huge inflows into the major water storages for that South East area. There are around 25 dams of medium to large size, and most of those dams are rapidly filling if not overflowing already. There are 4 major dams that comprise the bulk of the water supply, and the largest of those, the huge Wivenhoe Dam is at levels not seen for decades.

This most effectively eases concerns about the supply of water for this vast, and relatively densely (well, dense for Australia anyway)  populated area, and in fact this will ease water supply concerns for years to come.

The remnants of what occurred in Queensland moved South over the last day or so, and into Victoria, and also South Australia.

Andrew Bolt’s post directly above this one has graphic video footage of just what happened in the State Capital Melbourne.

  • Cnet review of the HD2

It seems after a quick review, the HD2 has achieved its baler status with Cnet. They recently reviewed the HTC device, and it seems the smartphone is now the highest rated on their site.

The review had a lot to say about the phone and there were very few issues.  The only criticism that came out of the review was the large size of the HD2, lack of US 3G, speakerphone and price, and most of these will be addressed by the T-mobile version.

If you remember, the T-mobile version will be very nicely priced, have US 3G, but will still have the huge size and the not perfect speakerphone. This is a start for T-mobile USA, but I am sure they will still have a big battle to fight vs AT&T’s iPhone 3GS, since they are priced the same.

  • How Regulators Plan To Limit Leverage, And Make Retail Currency Trading Go The Way Of Online Poker

forexThe Wall Street Journal brings us up to speed on the efforts of Gary Gensler and the CFTC to drastically limit the leverage available to retail currency speculators:

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has proposed rules that would reduce the amount of borrowed funds that retail investors can use when investing in the U.S. foreign-exchange market to as much as 10-to-1, from the existing 100-to-1 for major currencies.

Under current rules, a customer putting up a security deposit of $1,000 in cash will be able to trade a notional amount of $100,000, a common contract size for currencies such as the dollar and the Japanese yen. The new rule would cap that amount at $10,000.

Let’s be clear here. This isn’t about limiting retail forex trading, it’s about killing retail forex trading. See when you’re talking about currency, there’s really nothing to get excited about if you can’t leverage out the wazoo. When a move of a few hundredths of a cent is considered a notable move, 10x leverage is boring and hardly worth the effort.

This week lawmakers grilled Gensler, and were concerned that if this happened, trading would simply migrate overseas.

This will undoubtedly happen, at which point the only natural response will be to ban US punters from putting money with London (or Gibraltar or Bermuda) based shops, just like forex.

  • Pakistan: Climate Change and Global Warming

Every year the winters are shrinking and a few days of cold weather leaves us fresh and pleasant to face the scorching heat of the sun. This has left everyone in every possible field worried because this global warming will affect our life styles. The earth's climate is vibrant and always changing through a natural cycle. What the world is more concerned about is that the changes that are happening today have caught fire because of our very own deeds. These transformations are being studied by scientists through out the world in an attempt to find any evidence from tree rings, pollen samples, ice cores, and sea sediments. The causes of climate change can be categorized into two main categories – those that are due to natural causes and those that are twisted by man. The natural causes are continental drifts, volcanoes, and ocean currents accompanied by earth tilts, whereas the human factors range from bomb blasts and population outgrowth which is resulting in less and less greenery.

Effect of Climate change – shrinking Sar Lake and vanishing greenary in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Image by Flickr user NotMicroButSoft. Used under a Creative Commons License

Many Pakistani Bloggers have written about this Climate Change. In a post titled “Climate Change Cost Pakistan $3.5 Billion in 18 Years” Karim Khan states:

Pakistan has huge reserves of coal that are used for running several industries on local scale in many areas. But emissions from coal persistently threaten the atmosphere with emissions that lead to escalating the greenhouse effect. The World Bank report mentions the Bank’s interest in developing hydropower capacity in Pakistan and Nepal. Also, it is suggested to import natural gas from the Middle East for industrial use instead of using coal, in order to protect the country from climate-related disaster.

Climate change has harshly endangered the natural habitats of much of the wildlife populations. Some of the rare birds species like the black throated thrush, finches, magpie and golden eagle have almost vanished as the local ecosystems have been futile to sustain their needs. Many species of wolf and fox and their natural habitats are also being endangered by the changing climate. The departure of vegetative covering, which has led to the migration of the Markhor and wild goats, has had ever negative implications for the elusive snow leopard, which, has now lost its critical food source.

Tahir Hameed at The Pakistani Spectator writes in a post titled “Impending Global Warming and the world”:

Not only man but the survival of numerous plant and animal species is at stake. Imagine large arable tracts of land turning into deserts. Global warming is not only causing increases in temperatures but its causing the weather to become drier as well. The time is not far off. By the year 2025, more than 2.8 billion people living in forty eight nations will be facing water stress or water scarcity. Of these 48 nations, forty are in Near East, North Africa or in sub Saharan Africa.  It is thought that by the year 2050, the number of nations facing water stress or scarcity would have increased to fifty four and the population in these nations would be about 4 billion. That constitutes 40 percent of a projected population of 9.4 billion people.

In another post in the same blog Sher Ali says:

Unless we combine to take decisive action, climate change will ravage our planet, and with it our prosperity and security. The dangers have been becoming apparent for a generation. Now the facts have started to speak: 11 of the past 14 years have been the warmest on record, the Arctic ice-cap is melting and last year’s inflamed oil and food prices provide a foretaste of future havoc. In scientific journals the question is no longer whether humans are to blame, but how little time we have got left to limit the damage. Yet so far the world’s response has been feeble and half-hearted.

This climate change can be only delayed by adopting a few measures such as:

    • By starting awareness programs at the grass root levels, small children should be made conscious about conserving and planting tress and plants for more greenery.
    • Promote genuine research programs on the part of developed nations to measure the ongoing damages to the natural environment of the mountainous communities in northern Pakistan.
    • Encourage innovative approaches to environmental challenges caused by climate change fully making use of our Indigenous information.
    • Help decrease pressure on the present forest belt by exploring convincing options to developing substitute energy sources.

The objective is to bring global warming under control by restraining the discharge of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping “greenhouse” gases into the atmosphere.

Lead Pakistan, the nation's largest network of professionals on sustainable development, uploaded a two part series video in YouTube highlighting voices from Pakistan on climate change (Part 1, Part 2):

We can contribute to this global cause by taking personal measures. We can lend a hand instantaneously by becoming more energy efficient. Conserving and limiting our use of oil, gasoline and coal can set an example for others to pursue. If we do not do something now, we will leave a much larger crisis to our children. The good news is that, if we all join hands in stopping the climate change; we can decrease its impact on our lives, on our environment and on future generations.

  • Crock Pot Pork-Stuffed Peppers

peppersincrockpotAfter a busy day, opening your front door and inhaling the savory, warm aroma of dinner cooking is a great feeling. Especially if you can take credit for it, even if you’ve been at work all day. The Crock Pot (which is actually a brand name of what is generically called a slow cooker) is a humble but ingenious kitchen appliance. If you can find the time to fill it with some assortment of meat and vegetables and a little broth or water, the Crock Pot will take it from there. While you head off to work or pull weeds in the yard or just lie on the couch and relax, the Crock Pot slowly works its magic.

Crock Pot recipes shouldn’t be too complicated or they defeat the whole purpose of using a Crock Pot. They should, however, contain a variety of ingredients so you can get all the flavor and nutrients you need out of a one-pot meal. The recipe for Crock Pot Pork-Stuffed Peppers that Katerina Shchyelkunova submitted to the Primal Blueprint Cookbook Challenge easily meets this unofficial Crock Pot criteria. Most importantly, her recipe satisfies a craving for unfussy but extremely satisfying comfort food.

The green peppers will hold their shape while cooking and become individual little serving dishes filled with a mild but flavorful blend of ground pork and vegetables. Grated cauliflower seamlessly blends in and the carrots add a burst of color and a little bit of sweetness. Katerina uses dried tarragon in her recipe, but we tried fresh and loved the subtle anise flavor it added.

If you don’t have these exact ingredients in your kitchen, don’t sweat it. The Crock Pot is very forgiving – yet another one of its attributes that we love. Katerina sometimes uses ground beef or a combination of different ground meats. We can also imagine using diced tomatoes instead of paste and a bold combination of spices for those with a more adventurous palate. Left as is, however, this recipe will greet you at the end of the day with its comforting aroma, and a provide a meal that the whole family will love.

    Ingredients:

    ingredients 26

    • 2 pounds ground pork (or a combination of pork and beef)
    • 4 large green peppers
    • 1 large onion
    • 2 carrots
    • 4 cloves of garlic
    • 1/2 head of cauliflower
    • 6 ounce can of tomato paste
    • 1 tablespoon dry oregano
    • 1 tablespoon dry or fresh tarragon
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions:

Cut the tops of the peppers and clean the seeds out.

    greenpeppers

Arrange peppers in the Crock-Pot standing up and make sure they fit securely.

Grate onion, carrots, garlic and cauliflower in the food processor. You can also just chop them into small pieces with a knife if you don’t have a food processor.

    shreddedveggies

In a big bowl, combine ground pork, shredded vegetables, seasonings and tomato paste.

    meatandveggies

Add salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the peppers with the mixture and arrange leftover meat between the peppers. Add half a cup of water, cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours.

    peppersincrockpot

If you don’t have a slow-cooker, the dish can be cooked in the oven, covered, for 1-2 hours.

  • Jabra Stone Review

Today we are reviewing the Jabra Stone  Bluetooth headset, a masterpiece of style and tech. This review is one of the first that was done, except for the video, almost completely while trudging through the deep Minnesotan snow. In the review I touch some very important features, good and bad of the Stone.

    Let’s begin.

    Package:
The Jabra stone comes inside an all black, glass case. The box contains some very useful extras like the included USB charger, wall charger, manual, belt clip, and more things you might find that you need. The device and its charger are both in the front cover of the case where unusually everything is clearly labelled.

The package of any device is one of the most important selling point, because it portrays the devices quality. The packaging of the Stone exudes quality and class.

    Design:
The Jabra Stone, as mentioned before is a masterpiece of design. The look is innovative and very creative. The all black design and perfect curves gives it a sexy but still professional design. The all touch body is not as sensitive as I would prefer, but is still a one of a kind and it all fits in the palm of your hands.

The headset does have one issue with the design. The headset, while flexible, does not fit perfectly into your ear. It has a loose design and it sort of shakes a little more than I would like. That makes it not ideal for wearing while walking or running.

The headset is also only for the right ear, so if you like to switch things around once in a while, this device is not for you.

    Function:
Like many Bluetooth devices. The Jabra Stone does the usual calling, music, and the whole 9 yards. The music streaming capability is  very smooth with crisp play back. The bass on the headset is perfect for the one ear listing.

    Call Quality:
This is where the headset really shows it quality and makes it worth the price. The headset has one of the best call qualities I have ever tested. When used in a normal medium noise area, callers said I sound very clear and crisp even while talking at low volume. The device picks up a little noise when walking next to loud objects but luckily the receiver did not have too much to complain about.

The place where the call quality really showed it’s down site was when it became windy outside. While walking on a windy street, the other caller said he could hear all the wind breezing through and that made it a little hard for him to understand me at times.

    Price:
The price of this device while high, seems to be worth it for someone that wants a great device, and a decent Bluetooth headset. The unit is usually sold by AT&T or Jabra in the $120 range, but you could find it in the $90 range elsewhere.

    Conclusion:
My final thoughts on the unit is this headset is great, Jabra really did a major job with the design, but that it does have its flaws. Overall however it is a great buy, and for $90, it is very well worth it for the person that has been searching for a new gadget.
