Smaato Inc., a leading mobile ad optimizer and mobile advertising agency, has released its latest global mobile advertising metrics, Smaato’s Worldwide Index – which analyzes ad network fill rates and sheds important light on click-through rates (CTR) segmented by handset operating system, geography and response times. It is based on data collected from 35 mobile ad networks and over 4 billion ad requests served in the Smaato network of more than 3,000 registered mobile publishers in February 2010.
They report that the click through rate for ads on the iPhone/iPod Touch has dropped from 119 in December 2009 to 89 in February 2010, while Windows Mobile increased to 91.
With Windows Mobile click through rates higher than on Apple’s mobile devices, developers may be missing a revenue channel not exploited much on Windows Mobile – ad supported applications. With only 20% of applications free in the Windows Mobile Marketplace and the average cost of Windows Mobile applications hovering around $6.50, developers who release free apps may be at a competitive advantage compared to their peers that charge.

Hot on the news of Toyota offering strong March incentives to recover from a horrible February, General Motors announced that it will be offering a 0 percent / 60-month financing program on most of its 2010 model vehicles.
GM’s vice president for U.S. marketing Susan Docherty said that the company was not chasing Toyota and had previous plans of offering the incentive.
“That was our plan prior to hearing about what Toyota was going to do. We locked this in about a week ago,” she said on GM’s monthly sales call with reporters and analysts today.
Docherty said that the incentive will cover about 55 percent of all the automaker’s models.
GM sales were up 12 percent in February in a market that was up 13 percent.
Copycense points us to a Billboard/Reuters article over the fact that music performers are not making very much money from online streaming services. The article is designed to be “shocking,” but seems to leave out some rather important facts. For example, in the US, if Billboard did the same calculation, it would find that performers make even less from radio. That’s because performers make nothing from radio in the US, because Congress realized a while back that radio is advertising for musicians, and it seems ridiculous to force radio stations to pay musicians to advertise for them. In fact, the repeated stories of record labels illegally paying radio stations via payola showed that the market actually valued things in the other direction.
It seems quite odd that Billboard would leave this out of its analysis, instead, trying to position the streaming revenue as being so low as to be problematic. Yes, the numbers are low, but streaming radio acts as advertising for musicians that let’s them make money in lots of other ways.
This is the same discussion we had last week when some people got too focused on the question of whether or not Spotify was making people buy more music. That’s not the point. The point is whether or not streaming services make people buy more of anything that helps fund those musicians. Narrowly looking at just whether or not those streaming services pay musicians is really missing the point. It’s like asking how much NBC paid BMW to air BMW commercials. The answer is nothing. The money went in the other direction, because that’s where the real value was.
Gran Turismo 5 NASCAR promo – Click above to watch the video after the jump
In a word, impressive. Sure, we can go on for paragraphs about how disappointed we are that Polyphony Digital and Sony still haven’t released Gran Turismo 5 (there is no firm launch date) or bore you with how little we care for NASCAR, but instead we’ll focus on the fact that the post-jump video looks truly incredible.
Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi went to Texas to see his first in-person NASCAR race, and the gaming legend appears to be very impressed with the sheer scope of the Official Sport of the South. Judging from the game footage Sony attached to the video, we’re pretty impressed with the virtual version of the U.S. racing series as well. The b-roll-style footage looks very impressive, but most non in-game footage does.
The GT5 promo video also shows a few glimpses of what the race will look from behind the wheel as well. We’re thinking once (if) we finally have GT5 in our hands, we’ll have a series of virtual left-hand turns in our future. Right after we experience the Formula One, Rally and every other type of racing first. Hit the jump to see for yourself.
Nissan will begin delivering the zero-emission Leaf at the end of the year and plans to begin mass production in 2012, planning for a capacity of 500,000 cars in Europe, Japan, and the U.S.A. Nissan is going to be the only relevant player in this game. Note the use of the word relevant, because as Mitsubishi is planning a similar vehicle, they are not preparing for the level of production that Nissan is.
“Let’s be serious. It’s not because someone is coming with a prototype and one car that this is competition. The question is how much capacity are you building.” one Nissan exec said about the situation.
Nissan is already reporting 56,000 orders for the vehicle in the United States, and they plan to start taking orders soon in Japan and Europe. The French government has shown interest in 100,000 of the vehicles so far.
Nissan predicts that in ten years, 10% of the global auto-market will be fully-electric. Currently, there are 3,000 electric vehicles on U.S. roads out of a total of 200 million vehicles.
Refresher: Power for the Nissan Leaf comes from a 107-hp electric-motor that runs on power supplied by lithium-ion cells. On a full-charge, the Nissan Leaf allows for a driving range of 100 miles with a top speed of 87 mph. A full charge takes up to 8 hours on a standard 200V outlet. Buyers can opt for the DC 50kW quick-charger, which recharges the battery up to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

Refresher: The 2011 Audi A1 will go on sale in Europe later this year with prices starting around 16,000 euros ($22,062 USD). Power will come from a lineup of 4-cylinder engines, which consists of two TDI diesels and two TFSI gasoline units with output ranging from 84-hp to 122-hp. Mated to a 7-speed S tronic transmission, fuel-economy will range from 44 mpg and 62 mpg.

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Park Service (NPS) announced today that favorable pricing on its American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) large construction projects has resulted in savings of over 20 percent totaling approximately $129 million. The Service will use these dollars to fund an additional 30 high priority projects across the country putting additional people to work in ways that will leave a permanent legacy for our national parks through critical facility improvements, infrastructure repairs, and energy efficiency enhancements.
“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to do so much more with our Recovery Act funding than we originally planned. Certainly the market dynamics play a significant role in the pricing we’re seeing, but I also credit the execution and hard work of our team. These projects represent critical priorities for us that will also benefit the economy and create jobs in the near term,” said Jon Jarvis, director of the National Park Service.
The list of newly funded construction projects includes:
The transformation of a former military facility into an education and research campus at Acadia National Park. The project will reconfigure roads, remodel three buildings into classrooms and labs and complete the majority of work converting the base to the Schoodic Educational and Research Center.
The installation of photovoltaic cells on Alcatraz Island in Golden Gate National Recreation Area to replace the existing diesel generated power on the island.
The rehabilitation of the 138-year-old Catoctin Aqueduct, part of C & O Canal National Historic Park. The project will restore two missing arches of what was once called the “Most Beautiful Aqueduct” on the canal, replace missing handrail sections and generally improve its condition and lifespan.
The NPS is also announcing the replacement of 26 projects with 36 additional projects totaling $9.3 million. Projects are being replaced for various reasons, such as prior completion with non-ARRA funds or because they cannot be completed within the Recovery Act timeframe. The NPS selected the replacement projects from existing contingency lists using established merit-based criteria for expediency of implementation, job creation potential, and ability to address high-priority mission needs.
The NPS established and followed a formal but efficient process for making timely decisions on project funding reallocations and project substitutions to ensure they are supporting the ARRA goals of quickly stimulating the economy and creating jobs. Projects that are being replaced will remain priorities for the NPS, so will likely be completed with other funding in future years.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided $3 billion to the Department of the Interior. Of that amount, $750 million went to the NPS to fund job-creating investments in critical infrastructure and facilities, trail restoration, abandoned mine remediation, and energy efficiency and renewable energy.

2011 Avalon
Simplifying the customer ordering process, the number of Avalon model grades has been reduced from three to two, while the amount of standard equipment has increased, reducing the number of options and packages by 40 percent.
For 2011, Avalon receives distinctive new exterior styling and a restyled interior rich with premium touch points and practical new technologies. The exterior has a wider, more substantial grille that ties into state-of-the-art projector headlamps. The new headlamps and taillamps utilize light pipes for the first time on a Toyota vehicle to create a signature, night-time appearance. The front fog lamps, now integrated into a trapezoidal front bumper, provide a wider angle of illumination. New 17-inch wheels on the Limited grade feature a 10-spoke design with a mirror finish.
A new Avalon interior features a contemporary style that remains spacious and elegant, while adding thoughtfully integrated amenities, coordinated colors and updated wood-grain materials.
A comprehensive infusion of technology was designed into the new interior to ensure enhanced function and connectivity. New standard equipment includes Bluetooth hands-free phone and music streaming to the audio system from a compatible device, XM® satellite radio (subscription required), and both USB and 1/8-inch auxiliary connections for iPod® and other audio devices. Each of the three available audio systems can control iPods seamlessly using switches located on the steering wheel and display track information stored in the device.
The Avalon grade’s standard nine-speaker system offers exceptional sound quality, while the Limited grade features a standard 12-speaker, 660-watt JBL Premium Synthesis audio system with enhanced two-coil sub-woofer. The system uses 12 speakers and a 12-channel digital amplifier to deliver profoundly rich, full sound to all seats of the vehicle.
Additional standard equipment on the Limited grade includes enlarged perforated leather seats and seatbacks, driver and passenger eight-way power with lumbar support, driver’s seat and outside mirror memory systems, driver’s seat cushion extension, heated and ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, Smart Key System with push button start, High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps, and power rear sunshade.
All Avalon models continue to come standard with a DOHC 3.5-liter V6 with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) mated to an electronically-controlled six-speed transmission with sequential shift, generating 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. Avalon’s expected EPA-estimated mileage ratings of 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway are as good as or better than any other V6 engine in the segment. Avalon is rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV).
The redesigned Avalon continues to feature Toyota’s standard Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, and TRAC traction control system. Avalon also receives a redesigned accelerator pedal assembly and a brake override system. This braking system enhancement will automatically reduce engine power when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions. Seven airbags, including a front knee bag for the driver, and front side curtain airbags for both rows, are also standard.
Restyled at Calty Design Research Centers in California and Michigan and engineered at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, the Avalon will continue to be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK).
2011 Sienna Auto Access Seat Models
The factory-installed Auto Access Seat features a one-touch operation and benefits from the all-new Sienna’s spacious interior and wide-opening sliding doors. A seat-mounted ingress/egress switch and a wireless remote control allows for easy and flexible seat operation. The seat rotates 90 degrees and can be lowered to within 19 inches of the ground to further facilitate easier passenger transfers at the exact height required.
Once inside, the Auto Access Seat occupant can utilize reclining and slide switches located on both sides of the seat. This allows operation of up to four inches of slide travel and reclining of up to 24 degrees. The auto-recline feature also allows for safe head clearance through the door frame during entry and exit.
Sienna AAS models will go on sale in mid-March. Consumers can contact their local Toyota dealer to place orders. Further information on the new Sienna AAS models can be found on YouTube by searching “Sienna Auto Access Seat.” Additional information will be available on the Toyota Mobility Website (www.toyotamobility.com) beginning in April.
Toyota MSRPs do not include a delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee of $750 for Avalon and $800 for the Sienna AAS. The DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.

Marketing campaign for Suzuki Kizashi – Click above to watch the video after the jump
Unlike Hyundai, Suzuki isn’t featuring any lesbians in its marketing campaign for the all-new Kizashi. Nope, Suzuki is instead relying on another proven technique for attention keeping: Killer snowmen.
Actually, Suzuki already has a rather large marketing campaign in play that not only includes the Killer Snowman commercial for the all-wheel drive version of the Kizashi, but another TV ad playing up the car’s prowess compared to more expensive sport sedans, as well as a radio spot, print and web advertisements. The cool thing? Autoblog’s actually quoted in a couple of them, specifically the radio spot and dual-page print ad that you may have already seen in the buff books this month.
Check out the whole kit ‘n kaboodle after the jump, but if you really want to be sold on a Kizashi, just go drive one.
Be a student, not a victim. Find the meaning in the bad and learn lessons from life. Viktor Frankl, a psychologist who survived the Holocaust, wrote an inspiring book about the benefits of student-not-victim mentality called Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl purports that those who survived concentration camps were not necessarily more physically robust. Survivors chose to find meaning in their suffering, which kept them alive and thriving. In other words, they had a student-not-victim mentality. Frankl practiced what he preached. He believed he was meant to survive the Holocaust so he could write to help others survive terrible times by searching for meaning.
Happiness Assignment: When feeling down, recite this Frankl quote: “It isn’t the past which holds us back, it’s the future; and how we undermine it, today.”
There are tons of “satirical” news websites out there (pretty much all of them are following — not nearly as well — in the trail blazed by The Onion) and every so often it is true that someone gets “fooled” by one of those sites. But it usually doesn’t take long for the fooled party to set things straight. But apparently the Global Wildlife Center in Louisiana thinks that a satire about itself is illegal… and somehow has convinced a judge of that as well. Romenesko points us to the news that a judge has issued an injunction forcing a blog to pull down its satirical story about a supposed “giraffe attack” at the Center. The story was a play on the usual stories of tiger or bear attacks. Who knows if it was actually funny or not, but the Center’s director is upset that “it’s malicious and untrue.” It’s satire. It wasn’t malicious, but the whole point is that it’s untrue. It’s pretty sad that the judge agreed to shut it down, and the Center’s argument that it can’t be satire because “the site isn’t labeled as satire” is pretty ridiculous as well. Should everyone writing satire be forced to label it as such?
The New York Times’ science section recently wrote on a waste innovation from a Swedish architect called the PeePoo bag. The bio-degradable, one-time-use plastic bag could provide a more sustainable solution for human sewage management in urban slums around the world. Urea crystals within the bag break down the pathogens in feces. After use, the bag, which will be sold for 2-3 cents each, can be knotted and buried, turning into fertilizer. Anders Wilhelmson, who patented the bag, said “not only is it sanitary, they can reuse this to grow crops.” Wilhelmson tested the bag in Kenyan urban slums and found there were ample open space to bury the bags.
According to UN estimates, some 2.6 billion people or 40 percent of global population lack access to a toilet. Feces contaminates available drinking water in slums, and contributes to the early deaths of 1.5 million children per year. While the UN has set targets (improving the access to toilets by half by 2015), the private sector may need to get further involved in providing solutions. There is a large market firms can serve. Jack Sim, founder of the World Toilet Organization, told The New York Times there is a trillion-dollar potential market in low-income countries.
However, not all are convinced. UNICEF advisor Therese Dooley said local governments and non-profits will need to step up and invest in improved sanitation servies, because “the private sector can play a major role, [but] it will never get to the bottom of the pyramid.” The bottom of the pyramid refers to the underserved four billion who make less than two dollars per day. Education, behavior change, and government support will be also needed.
Other waste management innovations cited by The New York Times include Rigel Technology of Singaore, which can separate wastes and turns solid waste into compost. Additionally, India’s Sulabh international has created a toilet model that can turn waste in gas, which could be used for cooking.
In the U.S., The Washington Post reports that livestock manure has grown to such an extent that all of it can’t be reused in crops. “The result in farming-heavy places has been too much manure and too little to do with it. In the air, that extra manure can dry into dust, forming a ‘brown fog.’ It can emit substances that contribute to climate change.” A Michigan environmental activist, Lynn Henning, said: “Manure is no longer manure. Manure is a toxic waste now.”
Animal waste also has the adverse effect of creating ”too much life, and the wrong kinds,” including massive algae blooms that suck up oxygen. ”Scientists say the number of suffocating dead zones — oxygen-depleted areas where even worms and clams climb out of the mud, desperate to respire — has grown from 16 in the 1950s to at least 230 today. The Chesapeake’s is usually the country’s third largest, after the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Erie.” Kathy Phillps, an environmental / waste activist working in Maryland’s Eastern Shore, targets outside manure storage areas that contribute to water pollution. She said: “I don’t want to be the Poop Lady but, you know, somebody had to talk about this. It’s like this dirty little secret.”
Jarno Trulli shakes down the Lotus Evora Cup racer – Click above for high-res image gallery
Ham and eggs. macaroni and cheese, chocolate and bacon (a new personal favorite!). Some things just naturally go together. Such is the case for Lotus and Cosworth. In 1967 when Keith Duckworth, Mike Costin and Ford got together to create the DFV Formula One engine, Lotus was the first team to install it in a car. Ultimately, the DFV won 12 world drivers championships and 10 F1 constructors titles.
Lotus and Cosworth are now back together again working on high-performance engines. The current-generation Lotus Elise, Exige and Evora are all powered by Toyota-derived engines, and now Cosworth will be uprating these engines for new Lotus road and race machines, starting with the new Evora Cup car. The GT4-class Evora is propelled by a 400-horsepower 4.0-liter version of Toyota’s V6 engine with dry-sump lubrication all supplied by the engine specialists. We can’t wait to see what Cosworth cooks up for the new Esprit… if and when it ever arrives.
