The greatest scandal connected to global warming is not exaggeration, fraud or destruction of data to conceal the weakness of the argument. It is those who are personally profiting from promoting this fantasy at the expense of the rest of us.

Al Gore is the most visible beneficiary. The world’s greatest climate-change fear-monger has amassed millions in book sales and speaking fees. His science-fiction movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” won an Academy Award for best documentary and 21 other film awards. He was co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his “efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Gore was laying his own foundations. As he was whipping up hysteria over climate change, he cannily invested in “green” firms that stood to profit in the hundreds of millions of dollars (if not more) from increased government regulations and sweetheart deals from connected politicians and bureaucrats. The multimillionaire climate dilettante was given a free pass by reporters, who refused to ask him hard questions about the degree to which he was profiting from the panic he was causing.

  • Teaching Process Skills with Children’s Literature: The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks

     Magic School Bus

    Summary:

Ms. Frizzle is at it again. The Magic School Bus at the Water Works, which was written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen, takes a look at crazy Ms. Frizzle’s class as they venture on a field trip to the water works. What happens next shouldn’t surprise anyone who has read these books, as Ms. Frizzle actually takes her students into the water cycle so the class can get a first-hand look at how water forms, falls, goes through the purification process and then ends up coming out of the faucet at the very end. At the very end of this book, the students in Ms. Frizzle’s class draw up a chart showing the steps of the water cycle from beginning to end, a perfect visual example for students who pick up this book and also a great visual for teachers to show their students when reading this book out loud.

     Curriculum Connections:

With this book, children will get a first-hand look into the water cycle and how it functions. But this book does it in a fun way that is enjoyable for both teachers and students. This book shows the students how water flows through the purification system and how it flows down streams and rivers after falling from the sky. Also incorporated in this book are “10 Interesting Facts about Water” written by Ms. Frizzle’s students that provide such facts like materials that interact with water (solids, liquids and gases) and basic properties of solids, liquids and gases. Several of the facts are humorous as well as factual, which makes this book a great learning tool when teaching or learning about the water cycle (Virginia SOLs K.5, 1.3, 2.3 and 3.9).

    Additional Resources:

The Magic School Bus Wet All Over:  This unique website provides numerous lesson plans for teachers. It actually makes teachers and students feel that they are actually inside the book itself, because of not only the content of the lesson plans but the objectives as well.

The Magic School Bus:  The Magic School Bus’s own, personal website. Filled with fun, games and facts, this website will provide hours of nonstop entertainment for children to use for their own personal entertainment and for teachers to use in the classroom.

Water Works:  Have you ever wondered just how many things you can do with water? With this website, children are provided with all kinds of activities and experiments that involve water! A must for both children and teachers alike.

    Article Tags: NICOLA SCAFETTA

Image AttachmentThis article discusses the limits of the Anthropogenic Global Warming Theory advocated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

A phenomenological theory of climate change based on the physical properties of the data themselves is proposed. At least 60% of the warming of the Earth observed since 1970 appears to be induced by natural cycles which are present in the solar system.

A climatic stabilization or cooling until 2030-2040 is forecast by the phenomenological model.

  • Asus motherboard can be overclocked over bluetooth using your Windows Mobile phone

Some people are pretty serious about tweaking their desktop, and I suspect for the same reason many of these people may have a Windows Mobile phone.

Asus has now released a new motherboard, the Republic of Gamers Extreme Series, that features a variety of ways to make tweaking the settings easy. One of the ways is pretty innovative – a bluetooth connection and associated Windows Mobile application which means you can tweak your bios in real time, all without having to actually access the host OS at the same time.

The ROG Motherboard is around £300 on Amazon.com.

  • An Alternative Explanation for Differential Temperature Trends at Surface & in the Lower Troposphere by Philip J. Klotzbach

    Article Tags: Philip J. Klotzbach

Image AttachmentThis paper investigates surface and satellite temperature trends over the period from 1979 to 2008. Surface temperature data sets from the National Climate Data Center and the Hadley Center show larger trends over the 30-year period than the lower-tropospheric data from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Remote Sensing Systems data sets.

The differences between trends observed in the surface and lower-tropospheric satellite data sets are statistically significant in most comparisons, with much greater differences over land areas than over ocean areas.

These findings strongly suggest that there remain important inconsistencies between surface and satellite records.

  • Soldier Sues Because He Insists Movie ‘Hurt Locker’ Must Have Been Based On His Life

You see stories all the time about moviemakers and authors being sued because someone else had a similar “idea” for a story. Those lawsuits almost always end up going nowhere fast. Now in a slight twist on this, someone’s demanding cash because a movie character is based on him. Matthew Cruse was the first of a whole bunch of you to send in the story of how Master Sgt. Jeffrey Sarver is suing the producers/filmmakers and screenplay writer of the movie Hurt Locker, claiming that the main character was based on him. That’s nice, but how is that against the law in any way shape or form? The problem is that it isn’t. In most cases (there are some exceptions), you can make a movie out of someone’s life without their permission, thanks to that old First Amendment.

The fine folks over at The Hollywood Reporter have gotten their hands on the actual complaint (pdf) and explain how Sarver hopes to get around the pesky First Amendment with some creative lawyering:

According to the complaint, before [screenwriter] Boal was embedded with the military, he and Playboy agreed to “ground rules” set by the Department of Defense. One of the rules was that reporters would be restricted in the type of personal information they could report on a service member. Reporters were limited to releasing a member’s name and hometown only, and only on the condition the service member had provided consent.

Was this agreement sufficient to give Sarver a stake in the story and film? He says so. Another claim in the lawsuit is for breach of contract. Another is violation of privacy.

This still seems like a huge long shot by someone who feels entitled to something he has no actual legal rights over. Even if the story was completely based on Sarver (and the filmmakers claim that it was a fictional story), it’s hard to see any courtroom outcome that leads to him getting a cut of the film, as he’s requesting. Of course, it’s amusing to note that while he claims the movie was based on him, he’s also claiming defamation, in that the movie portrays him in false light (such as in that the character is a bad father). So, wait. Isn’t that effectively admitting that the character in the movie is not him and is, indeed, a fictional character? Of course, we did write about one case last year that stunningly found that a fictional character can be libelous, but we’re still hoping that was an aberration that won’t be repeated.

  • Picking a Winner: How to Make the U.S. a Leader in the Clean Energy Economy

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    CONTACTS:

    Suzi Emmerling (CAP): (202) 481-8224
    Sam Haswell (Apollo): (415) 371-1700 x201
    March 4, 2010

Conference Convened by the Center for American Progress and the Apollo Alliance Explores the Future of the Clean Energy Economy

WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Center for American Progress and the Apollo Alliance today co-hosted a conference, “Picking a Winner: How to Make the U.S. a Leader in the Clean Energy Economy,” in which several of America’s leading lawmakers and economic policy experts gathered to explore the future of the clean energy economy, how America’s choices for economic growth fit into the larger context of global trade, and how to position America’s workforce for success in the clean energy marketplace. The groups also released two reports (descriptions below) that offer recommendations for establishing U.S. competitiveness in the global clean energy economy.

Keynote speeches from Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich, and U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Wash, drove home the possibilities for America’s leadership in manufacturing, innovation, and clean energy jobs.

“We are in a race with other countries like China that spend $288 million a day to develop clean energy technology,” said Sen. Stabenow. “That’s why I have authored provisions to cut taxes and provide capital to companies that will make these technologies here at home and create new jobs. These investments are critical to ensuring America is the global leader in the clean energy economy. I thank the Apollo Alliance and the Center for American Progress for hosting this conference today and for doing so much to highlight the need for a clean energy manufacturing policy in America.”

“In the new clean energy economy there is no silver medal,” said Rep. Inslee. “By taking advantage of the new clean energy economy, not only can we create millions of new, well paying jobs, we can begin to reverse the climate crisis and wean our nation off foreign oil. The American tradition of innovation is alive and well and by feeding that tradition we will win this race. I would like to thank the Apollo Alliance and the Center for American Progress for putting together this important forum and their continued efforts to bring light to this issue.”

Opening up the conference this morning, John Podesta, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, said, “If we don’t invest and legislate across the value chain-if we don’t develop a comprehensive policy that focuses also on commercialization, production, deployment, and export-we will look up in 10 years and find ourselves not the great leader on clean energy, but the great buyer of it.”

Apollo Alliance Chairman Phil Angelides offered a similar sentiment: “We’re here today because America is in trouble. We are quickly losing the chance to be a leader in what will be the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century: the global clean energy economy. While other countries are making massive investments in clean energy infrastructure and production-and creating tens of thousands of new jobs as a result-the United States doesn’t even have the capacity to meet its own demand for renewable energy components.”

Two new reports focus on future of U.S. competitiveness in clean energy marketplace

The new report from the Center for American Progress is “Out of the Running? How Germany, Spain, and China Are Seizing the Energy Opportunity and Why the United States Risks Getting Left Behind.” The report examines clean energy policies in each country across three critical areas: markets, financing, and infrastructure. As a result, these countries are pulling far ahead of the United States in clean energy production, installation, and export-and increasingly in clean energy innovation as well. In fact, when clean energy technology product sales were expressed as a proportion of respective gross domestic product, the United States ranked 19th on the list. The report concludes, however, with a clean energy investment agenda that will boost our competitiveness and economy in the United States. Read the full report here.

“Winning the Race: How America Can Lead the Global Clean Energy Economy,” the new report by the Apollo Alliance and Good Jobs First, analyzes the United States’ competitive position in the global race for clean energy manufacturing jobs. It finds that under current policies, the United States stands to lose out on an estimated 100,000 clean energy manufacturing jobs to foreign competitors between now and 2015, and nearly 250,000 manufacturing jobs by 2030 should the nation fail to increase its support for domestic clean energy manufacturing. The report also finds that many U.S. and foreign-based clean energy manufacturing firms are investing money and creating jobs in low-wage countries that are key competitors in the clean energy race. Read the full report at http://www.apolloalliance.org/reports.

  • Penguin Plans to Make Books Shinier with iPad

Penguin doesn’t want to just continue releasing your standard, garden-variety e-books on a new platform with the iPad. CEO John Makinson showed off what his company had in mind for the platform at a presentation earlier this week, as reported by paidContent.

Penguin is apparently looking to sidestep the iBookstore altogether and sell content through the regular App Store, at least unless Apple has additional formats beyond .epub to offer for the iBook app. The publisher wants to offer embedded interactive content in its titles, including audio, video and device-to-device functions.

Looking at what Penguin is planning, I’m reminded of those elaborate electronic reading learning systems designed for children, or the original electronic books, which included simple noisemakers alongside traditional paper texts. In other words, it’s kind of neat, especially if you’re a five-year old, but it doesn’t really strike me as the exciting future of books Penguin is making it out to be. Besides, I don’t want a five-year old getting my iPad all grubby and sticky. Here’s a video of what the publisher was showing off:

The books demoed that were aimed at a more mature audience were a little more impressive, but I was mostly struck by how much they resembled regular apps more than anything else. They seemed like slightly less capable apps, in fact, in that they were still trying to look like books despite there being no point to that. People have developed great medical and astronomy apps for the iPhone (and iPad, by extension) platform. Why would I choose a book that’s been somewhat awkwardly made into an app instead of something designed, from concept to finished product, specifically for the platform?

As someone who avidly enjoys reading, and also buys more iPhone apps than is probably wise or justifiable, even if I do write for an Apple-centric blog, I’m not sold on Penguin’s vision of the future of books on the iPad. I don’t read books for the same reason that I use software applications or interact with rich media, and I’m not entirely comfortable with the idea of mixing the two concepts. I think in doing so, you run the risk of losing the value of one or both of these activities.

A quote by Makinson illustrates exactly what scares me about Penguin’s plans:

We will be embedding audio, video and streaming in to everything we do. The .epub format, which is the standard for ebooks at the present, is designed to support traditional narrative text, but not this cool stuff that we’re now talking about.

Cool stuff? Books aren’t cool. They don’t need to be, and your desperate attempts at staying relevant won’t change that.

  • Toyota sued over death of family in California Lexus ES crash

The crash of a California state trooper and three family members that helped spark Toyota’s wide-ranging unintended acceleration recall has gained a lot of media attention. The relatives of the family are now suing Toyota for defects they say caused the vehicle to speed out of control, killing all four passengers in the car.

The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in San Diego Superior Court.

Toyota’s CEO Akio Toyoda, made a public apology and extended his condolences to the Saylor family during the congressional hearings last week.

State trooper Saylor was driving with his wife, brother-in-law and his 13-year old daughter before his Lexus ES 350’s accelerator got stuck and hit speeds of 120 mph before striking another vehicle, plowing through a fence, hitting a berm and flying through the air, rolling several times into a field before bursting into flames.

  • Geneva 2010: Renault Clio and Twingo get the Gordini treatment

Renault Clio Gordini R.S. – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s amazing what a little paint and a few stickers can do for a small car. To illustrate that point, take a gander at the special Gordini edition Renault Clio and Twingo in the gallery below. Granted, the improvements reach much deeper than just those stickers, but the matte blue paint, white accents and white decals give these little runabouts a purposeful look and signal to the world that they are the top-of-the-performance-heap Gordini editions.

For those who need a refresher, Gordini is the name of a legendary Renault racing engineer. Amédée Gordini brought Renault some rally racing glory in the mid-’60s with the iconic R8 Gordini. Renault recently revived the name, reestablishing it as the top rung trim level on its already racy Renault Sport (R.S.) editions. Mechanically similar to their R.S. counterparts, they are mainly distinguished by retro styling touches (like the classic French racing blue paint scheme with white stripes) and an extra dose of exclusivity. Plus, they just look badass.

The first product in the new range, the Twingo Gordini R.S. had already debuted last November, but here at the Geneva Motor Show, the company unveiled their Gordini edition Clio as well. We have galleries of both cars for you below, the Mini-sized Twingo and the slightly larger Clio. Both cars have the performance upgrades found on R.S. models, with larger wheels, Brembo brakes, Conti SportContact3 tires, diffusers, heat extractors and that great livery. Check out the little “G” confetti in the stripes – classic.

  • Morgan Stanley: Americans Aren’t Working Because They Can’t Move Anywhere

house home flood water underwater disaster

In a whopping 80-page report from Morgan Stanley this morning, analyst Richard Berner takes on America’s problems with unemployment head on, addressing both long-term and short-term solutions that could help get people back into work.

Many points were made, but one that stuck out was the subject of “labor immobility resulting from the housing bust.”

Essentially, since people are stuck in their homes for one reason or another, it’s becoming much harder for people to find work outside of their hometown since they can’t sell their house.

Morgan Stanley: America’s workers have always been footloose.  Even in the Great Depression, they looked for work wherever it was. Today, however, about one in four homeowners is trapped in their house because they owe more than the house is worth, so they can’t move to take another job — until they sell or walk away.  Unlike in the Depression, when homeownership was less prevalent, negative equity among a nation of homeowners leads to substantially lower mobility rates.  That is leading to a wave of “strategic defaults” in which borrowers who can otherwise afford to pay decide to walk away.  Whether through foreclosure or default, this process is undermining the economic and social fabric of communities and reducing job opportunities.

Long-term solutions: Financial and mortgage regulatory reform are essential to restore the health of housing finance.  Significantly improving financial literacy is equally important.

Short-term remedies:  Local efforts to stabilize communities plagued by foreclosure are essential, but they are not enough.  It is essential to reduce debt, writing off bad loans while not destabilizing the financial system.  Modifying existing mortgages seems appealing, but policies aimed at mitigating foreclosures under the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) have not worked because they modify mortgage payments and not the amount of debt owed; re-default rates following modification are 50-60%.  Efforts to establish a protocol for short sales and/or principal reduction should be a useful tool in avoiding costly foreclosure and strategic default.

  • Utah Wants To Own State Microbes; May Demand Royalty On Any Products Developed

This one’s from about a month ago, but I can’t find any info on whether or not the bill has gone anywhere. It’s yet another crazy proposal coming out of the Utah legislature, which seems to really lead the field in crazy proposals out of state legislatures. This one, sent in by Kevin Cummings, is about a proposed bill that would effectively grant Utah control over the state’s organisms/microbes. Seriously. Apparently the legislator wants to create a patent-like regime that would force anyone to pay up if they made anything with Utah organisms:

“If they’re using Utah organisms, we think Utah as a state should benefit from royalties. Like a patent,” said Sen. Lyle Hillyard

Of course, that’s a total bastardization of what a patent is for. A patent is supposed to be a limited incentive to invent in an effort to promote the progress — and, in exchange for the patent, you’re supposed to teach the invention. None of those other aspects apply to what Hillyard is discussing here. There is no limit. There is no incentive (if anything, it takes away incentives from doing stuff in Utah). It doesn’t promote progress (just giving money to the state) and there is no teaching or disclosure involved. In other words, it has all of the worst parts of a patent and nothing good at all. It’s basically a blatant money-grab, highlighting the concept of ownership culture, where people try to claim ownership of things that cannot and should not be own-able.
