  • New ATEX Encoders Sendix 7053/7063

In hazardous areas with potentially explosive atmospheres encoders must comply with special protection legislation, as even the tiniest spark can have grave consequences. Positioning tasks arise in many such hazardous areas, whether in the mining and chemical industries or even in oil production. For just these applications that require position values, Kübler now offers its new Sendix absolute singleturn and multiturn encoders with ATEX certification. They are constructed with the “flameproof enclosure” type of protection and are approved for use in zones 1,2,21 and 22.

The shock and vibration resistant encoders operate flexibly and offer a high resolution of up to 29 bits. Thanks to their housing and flange that are made out of seawater-resistant aluminium they are ideal for use in offshore or coastal applications. With a protection level of IP67 and their wide temperature range from -40 to +60°C the Sendix ATEX encoders remain sealed even in harsh everyday use and offer a very high level of safety against breakdowns in the field. The compact design, with its installation depth of only 145 mm, diameter of 70 mm and space-saving cable outlet, rounds off the flexible, diverse application possibilities in areas with explosion hazards

  • Detection of Hydrocarbon and Water Dew Point in Natural Gas

Hydrocarbon dew point and moisture (water dew point): two indicators for the quality of natural gas and two potential risk factors for every natural gas plant. For these two reasons, more and more gas companies are asking for a continuous monitoring of these values. In combination with HYGROPHIL F already established in the natural gas industry, BARTEC has developed a new and innovative measurement system: HYGROPHIL HCDT. By measuring the hydrocarbon dew point and the moisture in natural gas, it monitors the quality of the gas and at the same time reliably protects the plant.

The measurement system HYGROPHIL HCDT consists of the display unit HYGROPHIL F 5673, the moisture sensor L1660 and the HCDT sensor. Both are installed in a specially developed sample system and enables the very precise, drift-free and fast detection of the hydrocarbon and water dew point.

The chilled mirror method is an approved and precise standard technique to detect the dew point. So far, it has mostly been applied for calibration and research purposes. The precision of the HCDT sensor is +/- 0,5°C. A measured value drift can be excluded as platinum temperature sensors are considered to be drift-free and neither movable nor easily wearing out sensor components have been integrated. This is why the sensor does not require a cyclical recalibration. Another advantage of the BARTEC design over conventional technology is the fact that particles carried along in the gas have no influence on the measurement.

The condensation range for hydrocarbons is 2mm x 1mm, which shows that the construction shape of the HCDT sensor could be drastically reduced. This in turn has the result that heating and cooling processes at the Peltier element can be carried out very quickly, which makes the measurement itself very fast. It goes without saying that the same attributes apply to the well-proven fibre-optical principle for the moisture measurement.

  • In-Process Measurement of Kinematic Viscosity

Viscosity is an important measurement parameter in the production of petrochemical end products such as fuel oils and lubricating oils. For the control of production processes, efficient process analyzers for the measurement of viscosity are indispensable. As for the method of determining viscosity, primary standards for petrochemical products (e.g. heating oil DIN 51603, diesel DIN EN 590, marine fuels ISO 8217) refer to standards describing capillary viscosimeters with high temperature precision for the measurement of kinematic viscosity (e.g. ASTM D 445, ISO 3104, DIN 51562-1). According to the law of Hagen-Poiseuille, such viscosimeters use the mass flow of the liquid through a capillary and the pressure dropping along its length to calculate the kinematic viscosity. Due to the high temperature dependency of viscosity, a high constancy of the measurement temperature is required (0.02 K in accordance with ASTM D 445).

In the new development of the Viscosity Process Analyzer VISC-4 made by BARTEC BENKE, special attention was given to well-known problems of the viscosity measurement and to the requirements of the standards ASTM D 445 and ISO 3104. It was possible to dispense completely with an oil bath, which is quite maintenance-intensive and whose temperature is often not constant enough, and with pumps.

The VISC-4 continuously determines the kinematic viscosity. Due to the simultaneous measurement of mass flow and density of the liquid, the kinematic viscosity can be used to calculate and display also the dynamic viscosity. Due to an appropriate construction, the necessity of correcting the measurement value in accordance with Hagenbach is eliminated. Several variants are available for various measurement and temperature ranges: Kinematic viscosities ranging from 0.7 to 500 cSt can be measured at temperatures ranging from 20 to 100°C.
Interfaces for the data transfer and the control through superordinate systems as well as for the remote maintenance of the VISC-4 are available. Special functions such as an automatic purging and venting procedure offer solutions for difficult applications. The extremely complex sample preparation systems for viscosity measurements are configured in an application-specific way.

With its continuous display of the kinematic viscosity, its high temperature precision and its minimized maintenance expenditure, the VISC-4 certified for zone 1 (ATEX) proves its high process capability.

  • For kindergartners’ full day, parents will pay

Palos district offers full-day kindergarten – at a cost

Maria Koeppen’s daughter’s birthday falls about two weeks after the Sept. 1 cutoff for kids entering kindergarten at Illinois public schools.

So when she was nearly 7 years old, she was still in kindergarten, attending school for 2 1 / 2 hours a day.

“By the time they get their coats off and boots off and eat a snack, you learn the letter ‘A’ and it’s, ‘Have a good day,’ ” said Koeppen, whose son and daughter attend Indian Hills School in Palos Heights.

Parents in Palos Heights School District 128 for years have rallied for a full day of kindergarten.

District officials say they can only afford to pay for half a day, especially as they weather the economic crisis.

So they have offered a unique solution to a common problem in Illinois’ cash-strapped school districts – requiring parents to pay tuition.

For $2,400 a year, parents could send their children to kindergarten full time starting this fall, provided enough parents commit to the program. The school will still cover half the day’s cost. The second portion of the day will be an extension of topics covered in the first, such as art and music.

By comparison, Trinity Lutheran School in Tinley Park charges $3,070 a year for half-day kindergarten to nonmembers of the congregation, and St. Bernadette School in Evergreen Park charges nearly $3,000. Both rates include school fees.

    ‘Tough economic time’

District 128 administrators have shied from calling the pilot program “full-day kindergarten,” because, they say, that implies the district will cover 100 percent of the cost.

“It’s a tough economic time, and we certainly wish we could afford to provide it without any extra fees,” Indian Hills Principal Cathy Leslie said.

Indian Hills is annually reimbursed $175 per kindergartner from the state, while other less-affluent south suburban districts receive as much as $6,000 per student under a state aid formula based on the district’s property wealth.

“Because of our local revenues, we do not get that (higher) funding,” District 128 Supt. Kathleen Casey said.

The Indian Hills program would be labeled an enrichment program, meaning it does not rely on state funding, so implementing it is a local decision made by the district, according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

Parents such as Koeppen want the program because they say their children are bored at home after such a short school day, and a longer period of instruction might better prepare them for first grade.

Other parents want a full day because they prefer their children to stay in the same location with the same teacher, instead of being bused in the middle of the day to a private kindergarten or day care center.

    More parents needed

District officials believe the Indian Hills kindergarten would be the first of its kind in the Southland, although the idea has been tried at schools in the northern suburbs. The school needs a minimum of 20 parents to commit to the program, with a $200 deposit by March 5. So far, 13 parents have signed on.

Other area schools, including those in Orland School District 135 in Orland Park and Mokena School District 159, have recently been forced to scale back to part-time kindergarten as the state struggles to keep current on its payments to schools.

Nearly 74 percent of kindergartners in Illinois public schools attend full-time kindergarten, and 78 percent of school districts offer it, according to the state board.

  • Police pay respects to fallen officer

A steady stream of Chicago Police officers paid their respects at the Bethel Community Church, 7601 W. Foster Av., to Town Hall District Police Sgt. Alan Haymaker, who died when he lost control of his car while responding to a burglary call.

Haymaker, the father of three, was a former minister and was active at Bethel.

An officer who had worked under Haymaker since Haymaker transferred into the 23rd District in December, Angelo Sanchez, said Haymaker worked well with his fellow officers and immediately became quite popular.

“(He was) a very, very understanding person,” Sanchez said. “You could talk to him about anything. He was very devoted to his family, very devoted to God. If you had any type of issue, you could meet up with him at any time of the night, and he would listen to you.”

Sanchez said that Haymaker’s training as a minister made him capable of relating to people much better than others “without that experience.”

Visitation for Haymaker will resume at the church at 10 a.m. Friday, with a funeral service starting at 11 a.m.

  • Because Without Patents, No One Would Ever Come Up With News Feeds

A bunch of folks are talking about a patent that was recently granted to Facebook (7,669,123) that covers creating an automatically generated news feed based on things that you do. While not quite as broad as some of the original reports claimed, it’s still fairly broad, and highlights pretty clearly how ridiculous the patent system is.

The purpose of the patent system should be to create incentives to come up with something that is both new and non-obvious, which would not be created without that incentive. And, then, of course, the idea is to share that information with the world, via the patent. But here we have a case where this is an obvious next step advance. Such automatically generated news feeds are found in all sorts of systems and social networks these days. But now we have a case where one company may have the right to prevent others from doing what it makes perfect sense for them to do. That’s not what the patent system was designed to do at all. A patent like this should never have been approved at all, as it serves no useful purpose in “promoting the progress” and seems to go against everything that the patent system is supposed to do.

  • The Toilet Paper Article of the Week: Mouth of Pain

    TTP-logo-masthead

Here’s an article from our friends over at The Toilet Paper. To subscribe to their free ball busting daily newsletter, click here.

Lil Wayne’s debut album went platinum when he was just 17 years old. Sadly, that may have also been the last time the 27-year-old Grammy winner ran a toothbrush over his diamond-encrusted chops.

Though he was to enter Rikers Island in February for a 2007 weapons charge, Wayne’s attorney was able to keep the rapper out of prison for a few more weeks by citing the need for a trip to the dentist. What many thought was a lame attempt at stalling the inevitable ended up being legit. Dude got eight! root canals last Tuesday!

    Number

$150K – Amount that Lil Wayne told Jimmy Kimmel that he’s paid over the years on his oral bling.

Letting the inside of them rot and decay was totally free.

    Quote

“I smoke weed all day. I’m a very successful addict. And a very smart one. And a very charismatic one. And one that just won four Grammys, and one that sold a million records in a week. What am I addicted to, being great?”

Lil Wayne, Rolling Stone interview, February, 2010

Yes… yes you are, Lil Wayne.

    Word

    drank

noun. 1. A narcotic cocktail consisting of a soft drink mixed with codeine-based cough syrup, often garnished with a Jolly Rancher. A Lil Wayne favorite for a number of years, drank (AKA “syrup,” “lean,” “sizzurp”) is popular in Southern hip-hop and has been blamed for a number of rapper’s deaths.

    No hacking cough, though.

    Fact

As he awaits imprisonment in Rikers Island jail, Wayne has worried about the impact that 12 months out of the spotlight will have on his career. As a result, he has recorded three records worth of new music, guested on numerous other artists’ upcoming albums, and shot nine music videos over Super Bowl weekend to be released over the coming year.

    The List

    Rikers Alumni

Sonny Rollins – The jazz saxophonist served ten months for armed robbery.
Sid Vicious – The bassist of the Sex Pistols served 55 days while awaiting trial for murder.
Tupac Shakur – The famed rapper served 11 months for sexual assault.
Plaxico Burress – The former NY Giants wide receiver is still serving a two-year sentence for accidentally shooting himself.
Mark David Chapman – He did time before moving to Attica for a 20-year to life sentence for killing John Lennon.

  • Officially Official: BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid

BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid – Click above for high-res image gallery

BMW is expanding its hybrid lineup down the model range to the recently introduced 5 Series sedan with a new concept that debuts Monday at the Geneva Motor Show. The new Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid will likely transition to a production model sometime in 2011. This will be the third different hybrid powertrain variant introduced by BMW following the two-mode system in the ActiveHybrid X6 and the mild hybrid system in the AcitveHybrid 7 Series.

The 5 Series uses a new derivative of the modular mild hybrid system from the larger 7. The 15 kilowatt electric motor from the 7 has been upgraded to a full 40 kW for the smaller sedan. That will allow the hybrid 5 Series to function as a full hybrid, operating in electric-only mode at city speeds. Unlike the twin-turbo V8 used in the earlier hybrids, the 5 uses the 300-horsepower twin-scroll turbo inline-six available in the 535i. A clutch between the engine and motor allows them to be disengaged for electric drive.

A larger battery pack than the 7 Series Hybrid is mounted in the trunk, but BMW has not yet specified if the 5 is using a nickel metal hydride battery like the X6 or a lithium battery like the 7. Chances are it will be the latter in order to minimize intrusion on the cargo capacity.

BMW has incorporated a variety of new strategies into the hybrid control, such as monitoring the navigation route to anticipate what is coming up and to make maximum use of the electric drive. At this point, BMW is not giving specifics on the efficiency of the new hybrid except to say that it should improve on the standard model by more than 10 percent.
