  • CBC gets pumped up by Oktoberfest

    Published Winter 2010
    Washington Public Employees Association Member Magazine

    This year’s CBC Oktoberfest was a huge hit, with strong attendance, an ideal venue, attractive decorations and excellent food.  CBC President Rich Cummins opened the event with gracious comments about positive labor relations, which were echoed by WPEA Staff Rep Dave Schiel and President Greg Parker.  Participants were invited to decorate pumpkins in small groups, and the entries were remarkably creative.

    A note of levity was provided by the renowned bodybuilders Hans and Franz (Dave and Greg), who made a special guest appearance.  Hans and Franz invited classified employees to “Get pumped up – wit ze union!” and displayed their bulging biceps and chiseled abs.  The pair praised CBC for strengthening the community and called upon union members to “flex” their political muscle by attending Lobby Day on behalf of community college funding.  The appearance culminated in a “flex-fest,” in which President Rich Cummins good-humoredly participated.

    Especially during these times of budgetary pressure and uncertainty, WPEA continues to value its positive and collaborative relationship with CBC.

  • New Product Launch

    Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Ltd has introduced the Argweld® Critical Weld Purge Monitor, specifically designed for measuring residual oxygen levels in inert weld purge gases. It is believed to be the world’s first purpose designed and built monitor of this type.

    The instrument measures and clearly displays actual oxygen levels as low as 0.001% (10 parts per million).

    The unit is menu driven by two adjustable buttons and has an internal alarm to alert an operator if oxygen level rises above a preset limit. A signal can be used to terminate the welding operation should this level be exceeded. An optional software package is available to allow a computer to be used to store and print results for quality control purposes.

    A unique new low-cost sensor is used which has a very low maintenance
    requirement and an indicated five year life expectancy. An automatic pump is incorporated for extracting gas samples where it is not possible to deliver a constant flow over the sensor.

    The Critical Weld Purge Monitor can be used and interfaced with all manual and automatic welding techniques, but will be much appreciated by those engineers requiring sensitive monitoring of low oxygen levels when joining the more reactive materials such as titanium alloys and duplex steels.

  • New High Pressure Pasteurization System for Small/Medium Food Processors

    KENT WASHINGTON (February 18, 2010) Avure introduces a low-cost horizontal High Pressure Processing (HPP) system, the QFP 100L-600. This 100 liter capacity model sells for under $1 million, a price point that makes advanced food safety technology and production volume HPP more affordable for small/medium and seasonal food producers. It features short cycle times for higher throughput, low operating and energy costs, and advanced controls with enhanced process visibility and a high degree of self-diagnostics. The 100L can also provide larger HPP processors with additional offload capacity and/or operational redundancy. • China Requiring You To Submit Photo ID To The Gov’t If You Want To Create A Website

    This isn’t really a surprise given China’s massive internet censorship (“Great Firewall”) efforts, but apparently the Chinese government is now requiring anyone who wants to set up a website in the country to submit their identity cards and photos of themselves before they can build a site. Oh yeah, plus they have to meet with gov’t regulators to get approval to register and set up a website. In other words, the crackdown is spreading… though plenty of folks in China appear to be getting around these new rules by setting up websites outside of China. In the meantime, what a way to kill the sort of entrepreneurial web spirit you need: imagine how many internet sites would never get created if they first required approval by a government bureaucrat?

  • Two Thirds Of Americans Say No! Democrats Face 2010 Firestorm.

    02.24.10 10:14 AM posted by Skip MacLure

    <div class="entry"><div class="snap_preview">Nobody I’ve talked to can quite fathom why the Democrats seem determined to remain in the death spirals that are its insane fiscal policies. In a way it’s understandable, given the composition of the administration and the Democrat dominated House and Senate. Taking a look at who these people are, and the man that they have elevated to be their leader, places a little more perspective on it.

    Barack Hussein Obama…the man without a history or a background. At least, not one that can be readily traced. What we do know about him is not all that clear. His associations from childhood, attending a moslem school and attending mosque with his Indonesian step-father, his associations with various moslems throughout college and his mentoring in Hawaii by an avowed communist. Frank Marshall Davis was an active and key member of the CPUSA, involved in an important Soviet-sponsored network targeting the Hawaiian Islands as an important part of US strategic defense.

    Obama was ‘mentored’ by Davis from the time he was nine until he left for Occidental college on the mainland at the age of eighteen. At Occidental, in his own words he was careful to associate only with radical minority and political groups. His associations have all come from radical backgrounds. His brief legal career was in working with and aiding the radical ACORN group. This in fact turns out to be his main and only resume as a radical ‘community organizer’. Barack Obama never once held a private sector job.

    Likewise, the people he has chosen to surround himself with are for the most part what we in the plebeian world would refer to as pinheads. Only about SEVEN PERCENT of Obama’s entire administration has ever held a private sector job, run a company or had to meet a payroll. read more &raquo;

  • Gambling on Amnesia

    02.24.10 02:36 PM posted by scottspiegel

    “This president is a real slow learner.” – Oscar Goodman, Mayor of Las Vegas

    Speaking of gambling, President Obama has subpoenaed weary Democrats and disgusted Republicans to a Blair House summit tomorrow for a day-long policy-palooza to be broadcast on C-SPAN for Americans who didn’t get enough of the health care reform debate last year.* Obama has decided to wager what little respectability he has left on the hope that the American people will be charmed by his vision of health care reform, will develop amnesia, and will forget everything they hate about the bills passed by Congress last year.

    The Associated Press announces that the new proposal released by the President “is important, but not as critical as the political skill Obama can apply to an impasse that seems close to hopeless in a pivotal congressional election year.”

    Hmm…* Let’s tally up the campaigns Obama has fought and lost using his “political skill” over the past four months: securing the 2016 Olympics for Chicago, electing Creigh Deeds governor of Virginia, reelecting John Corzine governor of New Jersey, getting UN members to agree to a climate change accord in Copenhagen, and electing Martha Coakley Senator in Massachusetts.* Oh—and of course his year-long crusade to sell Congress’s health care plan to the public, which resulted in voters increasing their opposition to the plan in direct proportion to the number of syllables Obama emitted in his attempts to explain it.

    Obama views the populace as a huddled mass of slow learners to whom he must explicate Congress’s monstrous health care legislation over and over until it penetrates their thick skulls. read more &raquo;
