  • Orange Business blog asking for clarity on Microsoft’s business mobility plans

closedforbusiness A post today on the European carrier Orange’s business blog begged Microsoft for some clarify on their enterprise intentions.

    Steven Costello notes:

While Windows Phone 7-based devices are not likely to reach the market before Christmas 2010, one thing is very clear: the operating system is very-much consumer focused, with Microsoft’s other consumer brands including Xbox and Zune being referenced in the press release, but with the word "enterprise" conspicuous by its absence. With Microsoft previously having had a strong position in the enterprise smartphone market, this means that the future upgrade path for enterprise Windows Mobile/Windows Phone devices is anything but clear, which is certainly likely to impact businesses that are either existing Windows Mobile users or which are planning their smartphone strategies.

He expressed concern about the lack of backwards compatibility with legacy business software, and did not find the continuing existence of “windows phone classic” a satisfactory alternative, saying it was unclear how much longer this platform will be supported, making companies wary of investing further resources in an “evolutionary dead-end”.

It is certainly clear that Microsoft has done very little to reassure business, where they have a major presence, that it was still worthwhile buying Windows Mobile handsets and starting new Windows Mobile-based projects, which could dramatically affect sales in the coming months.

Do you use Windows Mobile devices in your business and have concerns about the future? Let us know below.

  • Theft at national competition disheartens cheerleading team

Someone is responsible for stealing more than spirit from a group of Buffalo Grove-based cheerleaders competing over the weekend at a Dallas competition.

Eight bags were reported stolen on Saturday, apparently taken while the cheerleaders performed at the NCA All-Star National Championship Competition at the Dallas Convention Center.

Jeff Siegal, coach and owner of Ace Athletics in Mundelein, said it was the eighth or ninth time his team has competed in the Texas event.

“We will never go back again,” Siegal said.

The all-star team features cheerleaders from Elk Grove Village, Highland Park and Libertyville, among other communities.

Siegal and parents of the middle-school and high-school age cheerleaders are angry at Dallas police and the event organizers. They said event organizers should have had security watching their bags, which were placed behind the stage. And they didn’t like how police responded. Siegal said some of the cheerleaders used a computer to trace a cell phone in one of the bags using GPS. Siegal said police refused to go to the area because it was dangerous. Dallas police didn’t return a phone call seeking comment.

It typically costs about $900 per cheerleader for flights and accommodations for the competition, Siegal said. Thirty-four kids competed, and Siegal said the thefts left them feeling violated.

“This was their big opportunity and it was all taken from them,” Siegal said

The gym backpacks contained iPods, money, medical cards – even medicine for diabetes, according to police reports. A diabetic cheerleader needed treatment Sunday morning, but fortunately had extra medicine and was OK.

Siegal said his team was in first place on Saturday, but fell to third place on Sunday. He wonders what could have been if the team hadn’t been distracted by the stolen bags or if they were recovered.

Siegal hopes his cheerleaders learn a life lesson, but said no one should have to go through this experience.

  • Replacing manager will be a challenge, Buffalo Grove says

How do you replace 32 years of experience?

That will be the question facing the Buffalo Grove Village Board as it seeks to find a successor to Village Manager William Brimm, who announced his retirement during an executive session at the end of Monday’s village board meeting.

Brimm, who was named village manager in 2006, has served with the village, mainly as finance director, since 1978.

Buffalo Grove Village Clerk Janet Sirabian has known Brimm for his entire stint with the village, beginning when Sirabian was secretary to the plan commission.

“We have never had and we never will have anybody that has poured his whole heart and soul into Buffalo Grove like Bill has,” Sirabian said.

Sirabian said a key ingredient in a new village manager would be integrity, as well as “the strength to be able to stand up to people.” But the tallest order, perhaps, would be the expertise to run a company of 250 employees that serves 45,000 residents. “It’s not easy.”

Brimm’s announcement was low key. About midnight Monday, he handed in his retirement letter, stating that it would be effective Friday, June 11.

He didn’t elaborate on why he was leaving, other than to say, “I have given a great deal of thought to where I am being led. Just yesterday, I celebrated my 61st birthday and while not considered old anymore, (it) does make me realize that matters of age and responsibility do warrant thought and consideration.”

He added that he will be helping in the raising of his 4-year-old grandson.

“This was a difficult decision to make because I have developed professional as well as personal relationships with many of the staff and board members,” said Brimm, who lives in Arlington Heights. “I will remember all of my years with Buffalo Grove as one of the highlights of my life. I have truly enjoyed and been proud of the many accomplishments that we have achieved over all these years.”

Brimm did not allude to his conflicts with Trustee Lisa Stone, who was elected last April. And when asked about Brimm’s retirement Tuesday, she would only say, “I wish him well.”

But Village President Elliott Hartstein did blame Stone for accelerating Brimm’s retirement. He missed the meeting because he was undergoing tests for dizziness, but he was reached by phone Tuesday night at Glenbrook Hospital.

“I think there is probably no one finer in terms of what he has done for the village of Buffalo Grove,” he said. “I’m really saddened by the fact that it was accelerated by some of the activities of this past year. – The fact of the matter is we have had a trustee that has acted in a way that has basically created a climate that has basically made it very difficult to continue to deal with the day-to-day operation of our community.” He didn’t use Stone’s name, saying “It is pretty self-evident.”

After a long period of government by quiet consensus, the board was rocked by controversy following Stone’s election. Stone openly called Brimm’s performance into question – particularly in the wake of controversy over how approval of an off-track betting parlor was handled. That led to a review of whether the village had violated the Open Meetings Act and if the village had adequately complied with a Freedom of Information Act request for related e-mails when additional e-mails later were located.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office recently said it found no reason for action against the village in the matter, though it cautioned Buffalo Grove to be careful how it handled such matters in the future.

Some village board members complained that Stone harassed Brimm with phone calls at all hours of the day, including weekends. As a result, guidelines were set for village board members to contact village staff.

“I get the sense over the last year, his job had become much more stressful, and with retirement coming up anyway – he always told us he wasn’t going to work more than four or five years – I think for his own sake and for his own health and well-being, he made his decision now,” Trustee Jeffrey Braiman said.

The conflict between Stone and the old guard on the board may make it difficult to find Brimm’s replacement, he said.

“Some managers, or assistant managers, may be frightened of getting in a situation where there may be a conflict or perceived incivility on the board,” he said.

Trustee Jeffrey Berman agreed. “I think it’s always difficult to fill that position. It may be even more so now. I think our environment may be viewed by some potential candidates as challenging. There is no secret that last year has been a challenging environment on our board and in the village.”

It will be Hartstein’s job to appoint a successor, subject to the consent of the village board. Hartstein said he will be reaching out to the board for input and feedback at the earliest possible time.

Braiman said despite the difficulties, he’s confident the right person can be found.

“I imagine we’ll hire a search company and we’ll do a nationwide search to get the right person. There are a lot of very well qualified, very impressive managers and assistant managers out there, and I’m sure we’ll find somebody that will work well for us.”

Brimm, who grew up in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, was named village manager in 2006 after his predecessor retired.

In recognizing Brimm for 25 years of work in 2003, Hartstein said “Our financial well-being – undoubtedly would not be what it is today without the efforts that have been tireless and continuous and unselfishly given day in and day out for the last 25 years by our own assistant village manager and finance director, Bill Brimm.”

Hartstein noted that Brimm had overseen a local economy with a tax base that grew from $22.9 million in assessed value to $1.2 billion, while the population swelled from 16,000 to 43,000. The tax rate and the water rate had remained stable for more than two decades, and Brimm had received the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement from the Government Finance Officers Association more than 20 times.

Speaking this morning to journalists in Los Angeles, General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz went over the new and strong product portfolio for the company. However, Lutz skipped mention of the Chevrolet Colorado or the GMC Canyon. When asked by PickupTrucks.com what the future holds for the two small pickups Lutz said:

“It’s uncertain at this point. They may well go away.”

GM has said nothing about whether it will refresh or replace the Colorado or the Canyon. It was reported last year that GM plans to end production at the Shreveport plant where the two trucks are produced by 2012.

  • BERU Factor 001: Formula 1 engineers create a bicycle

    Filed under:

Ever wonder what F1 engineers could make if they didn’t have to comply with the regulations governing the sport? Well, here you just might have your answer. Only it’s not a car, it’s a bicycle.

The product of British engineering firm BERU F1 Systems, the Factor 001 very well might be the pinnacle of road bikes. Without having to comply to the regulations of any particular cycling series, BERU was able to start from scratch and design the bike the way they best saw fit. The carbon fiber monocoque frame is painstakingly built according to the customer’s specifications and measurements and features carbon-ceramic brakes and an LCD touch-screen that displays biometrics and various other readings.

BERU will only produce a few hundred examples of the Factor 001, which may come down more to the time factor: each example takes six engineers a week to build. Currently on display at London’s Science Museum and at Harrod’s department store, prices – are you ready for this? – start at a whopping £22,000. That’s about $34 grand in American greenbacks, in case you weren’t cringing enough already. Details in the press release after the jump.

  • SellaBand Bankruptcy Shows Poor Execution; Not A Condemnation Of Fan Funding

With the news that SellaBand has filed for bankruptcy, we’ve been seeing some gloating among those who don’t believe in direct-to-fan or fan-supported business models for music — suggesting that Sellaband’s failure is an indication that those models don’t work. Of course, that’s kind of like arguing that the personal computer industry is a failure because Osborne went out of business. Sellaband wasn’t the first in the market, but certainly was a pioneer in promoting fan-focused business models. But a lot of Sellaband’s troubles came down not to the model, but to actual execution. Every time we’d post about Sellaband, we’d receive a bunch of emails and comments from people who had really bad experiences working with the company.

Unlike the more recent crop of companies in this space, that appear to be a lot more flexible, Sellaband was pretty rigid in its setup. Rather than designing itself as a platform for fan funding, it tried to position itself as a label that also used fan funding — but that required doing a lot of stuff that labels help with, and one of the complaints with Sellaband was that it wasn’t well setup to handle much of that. Separately, unlike other fan funding options, Sellaband used to require a band to raise $50,000 — which is a lot more than many bands might need. Eventually this changed, but it made things slow going for Sellaband. Furthermore, one of the bigger problems with Sellaband was that it didn’t quite have the model right. It did very little to encourage actual connecting with fans, and never did a really good job setting things up so fans had a good reason to buy. Sellaband seemed to assume that people would just support a band for an “investment” in their album. But that mucked up the fan relationship a bit. Fans support a band because they want quality product (music, experience, access) back, not potential monetary returns.

The failure of Sellaband is a failure of execution, but certainly not of the idea that you can create models that allow content creators to build business models by getting fans to support them via more creative business models.

  • Hamann offers up to 271-hp in the Abarth 500 and Abarth 500 esseesse

Hamann has created an exciting performance and visual upgrade for the new Abarth 500 and the Abarth 500 esseesse, offering a power increase of up to 271-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque – a significant upgrade from the models standard output of 133-hp and 158-hp respectively.

The lowest level of upgrade for the Abarth 500s offered by Hamann produces a total of 160-hp and 210 lb-ft.

Output upgrades come courtesy of ECU management, a turbocharger, upgraded air filter and exhaust system. Stopping power comes from four-piston calipers that can be seen through the 18-inch matte black wheels. Hamann is also offering a set of aerodynamic upgrades and has lowered ride height by 30mm on the front and 35mm on the back.

Both are available to order now in Europe.

    Hamann Abarth 500:

    Press Release:

From the friendly bubble car to the wild beast: the HAMANN performance kits for the Fiat 500 Abarth and Abarth esseesse

At first glance, the Fiat 500 does not really seem to fit into the HAMANN-Motorsport programme. But the company based in Laupheim is not only one of the most renowned refiners for BMW-models and exclusive luxury cars, but also popular cars – and without any question the retro scooter surely belongs into that category. Since the model has been introduced in 2007, HAMANN has offered dynamic modification kits for the Cinquecento which meet large approval with the fans.

Now the next strike of genius follows: HAMANN provides the Fiat 500 with more power. The Abarth version is the centre of attention – Fiat´s sports model. Yet, the factory-made 135 hp sound rather modest. But HAMANN now changes that with five performance enhancements. Already the smallest upgrade “HS I” boots the little scooter up to 160 hp by applying some well-directed changes in the engine electronics. The torque rises from 206 to strong 285 Nm. But this is not yet the end for the 1.4 litre petrol car. The next upgrade “HS II” pushes the Abarth to 180 hp and 295 Nm torque. Software setting, modified exhaust turbo charger, optimised air filter case with sports air filter as well as a two-pipe end muffler – they all make this impressive result possible. But the HAMANN technicians even go one step further with the performance kit “HS III” which renders 210 hp and 310 Nm. This can be attributed to a turbo charger with smaller geometry, a new fuel supply and an optimised engine electronic.

The vehicle transforms from the friendly bubble car in the back mirror into the wild beast with the help of the two race-qualified modification kits which contain an entire engine modification. For the power setting “HS RACE” for example, HAMANN uses forged pistons, enhanced connection rods, a modified turbo charger with charge air cooler, a race clutch with weight-optimised one-mass flywheel and a new control electronic – altogether this renders 240 hp and a torque of 330 Nm. For optimum deceleration, there are sport brakes with a four-piston calliper and 264 mm or 305 mm large brake discs. The Abarth turns into a real missile with the modification kit “HS CINQUECENTO 575″. Compared to the “HS RACE”, it also contains a re-engineered cylinder head with adjusted camshaft, two charge air coolers as well as a self-locking differential. This leads to an impressive power of 275 hp while the torque is catapulted to 380 Nm.

Furthermore, HAMANN-Motorsport offers an alteration for the manual transmission. By applying a long fifth gear, the engine rev is decreased by 500 r.p.m. which allows a higher end speed. Moreover, customers can order a self-locking differential which allows a locking capacity of up to 50 percent and therefore significantly increases the traction. Both components and the power settings can be also combined with the Fiat 500 Abarth performance kit “esseesse” by the manufacturer.

HAMANN presents the remarkable broad built LARGO as a perfect match for the sporty power makeover. New aerodynamics components made of light composite materials are produced for the modified design language of the trendy Italian. Perfectly processed extensions seamlessly fit into the design and render a masculine appearance. The re-engineered front skirt with integrated LED daytime running lights is the striking eye-catcher. Special wing extensions are fitted at the front and the back. These make the car body wider by impressive 30 millimetres at the front axle and 35 millimetres at the rear axle. The perfectly designed side skirts act as a visual connection between the two. And also the new rear has much to offer: sports exhaust systems with two- or four end pipes and a Ferrari-like diffuser impressively enhance the back section. All HAMANN components do not only convince with their look, but also with their aerodynamics. They enable an optimised airflow over the vehicle silhouette and render additional downthrust.

Different HAMANN sports suspensions ensure a better handling and so does the newly developed design wheel LARGO FORGED ANODIZED which perfectly matches the new, sporty look. The black matt anodised, one-part rim is offered in the size 8.0 x 18 (front axle) and 9.0 x 18 (rear axle). HAMANN recommends tyres in the dimension 215/35 R18 or 225/35 R18. A favourable alternative is the cast rim HM EVO. The hallmark of the modern style shown in this 18-inch rim is the glossy black varnish with the diamond-polished rim star and the classy well. Five elongated and vaulted triple spokes confirm the visual and technical finesse. The rim is offered in the size 7.5 x 18. HAMANN recommends tyres in the dimension 215/35 R18 at the front- and 225/35 R18 at the rear axle. But it is not only the dynamic design of the rims that convinces its drivers, it is also the low weight that reduces the unsprung masses of the car.

As an alternative to the broad-build programme LARGO, the tuning specialist also offers the “sportivo-line” for the Fiat 500. Front skirt, side wings and rear skirt emphasise the trendy look of the retro scooter and so does the design wheel HM sportive I. The black matt varnished, one-part rim has a diamond-polished outer edge and is offered in 7.0 x 17. Here, HAMANN recommends tyres in the dimension 195/40 ZR17 or 215/35 ZR 17.

An aluminium pedal set including foot rest and a floor mat set with embroidered HAMANN logo accentuate the dynamic interior focus. The Fiat 500 Abarth programme is stylishly perfected with a flag decoration.

  • Reading a Woman’s Body Language: Tips from a Poker Legend

    3F6F34A0-644B-4BCD-B4B9-125850061C63.jpg

Is there anything more helpful than your best wingman by your side during a night out? Actually, as it turns out, being able to read the body language of women will save both you and your wingman a lot of time and trouble. By simply tuning into a woman’s reaction by assessing body language, you can gauge her interest within the initial stages of the conversation.

Bradley “Yukon” Booth – a spokesperson for online gaming website GR88.com who is widely known for his stint on NBC’s Poker after Dark – has refined his table skills to apply to an abundance of real-life situations. A master at reading his opponents, Booth also uses his sharp perceptive skills off the table to read body language in women and potential love interests.

Here are Brad’s top tips to figure out whether or not the feelings are mutual during your next night on the town. As it turns out, how she says things are just as important – if not more so – that what she is actually saying….

Mimicking – When you are talking to a woman, if she is mimicking your body position and action it means that she is comfortable in the situation and most likely interested by you and what you are saying. On the other hand, if she is turned away from you or standing in an opposing position, it likely means she is disinterested or closed off.

Arms Crossed – This is one of the worst possible gestures that you can encounter when you’re trying to flirt with a woman. This gesture indicates someone who is closed off and doesn’t trust you.

Reading the Smile – False smiles pull back only the mouth while real smiles pull back both mouth and eyes. If she smiles with her mouth but not her eyes, it’s likely that she’s just trying to be polite. But if you can see both rows of teeth when she smiles, she’s genuinely happy to be with you – and if she moistens her lips with the tip of her tongue, that’s a very good thing.

The Eyes – Dilated pupils mean that she is interested in the topic. See if you can gauge her pupil’s reaction to you by noticing their size and the way it may change. Also, if she makes direct, steady eye contact, she’s interested.

Look at Her Hands – Look at her hands while you talk: if her palms are open, it shows sincerity and receptivity – she isn’t hiding anything from you. If her fists are closed or clenched, she’s angry or she’s protecting herself from you (or she’s about to take a swing at you, so be prepared to duck). Also, what is she doing when looking at you? If she tilts her head, she’s creating a sultry, affectionate gaze that shows her interest.

Noticing the Little Things – Beyond the obvious smile, eyes, and general body position, it is crucial to pay attention to the little things. If she tosses or touches her hair, this is classic “preening” behavior and is clearly flirtatious in a social setting. If she lifts her hair off her neck and stretches, baring her neck, she’s displaying submissive behavior that leaves her vulnerable to you – a telltale sign of attraction. If she taps or drums her fingers, she’s bored, impatient or annoyed.

Now it’s time to use the poker master’s skills on your own. Good luck grasshopper.

  • How To Taste A Fine Whisky

    C7CFB4D9-4354-4DA1-BB2E-46F94E33272D.jpg

If you’re a beer drinker you probably think all whisky tastes the same. But like anything else in life, the more familiar you are with whisky the more you will enjoy it. If you’re new to tasting a fine whisky, here are a few tips from Canadian Club’s Dan Tullio to get you going:

    Step 1: Color
Use a clear glass with a narrow mouth and a wide bottom to pour ¾ oz of room temperature whiskey. Notice the color of the whisky – the darker the whisky the longer the product has been aged.

    Step 2: Aroma
Some of the flavor compounds found in whisky are volatile, and the smell is part of the experience. Hold the glass in your hands to warm up the whisky. Put the mouth of the glass an inch from your nose and inhale the aroma. You are looking for fruity smells – take note of what you smell and try to describe it. Then put the glass closer to your nose (almost in the glass).

Before you get ready to taste, add a tiny bit of room temperature bottled water to open up or release the flavor of the whisky. The water will also dilute the concentrated spirit somewhat, allowing you to taste the complex flavors more clearly without the burn from the strong spirit.

    Step 3: Body
Take a sip of the whisky and notice the body of the flavor in your mouth. Is it aggressive; is it sharp, obtrusive? Take note.

    Step 4: Taste
The final step is to really “taste” the whisky. Notice where it hits your tongue (tip – sweet, back – bitter, top – salty, side – acidic).

    Step 5: Repeat and enjoy!

Some people are confused about whether they will even get into the temple to see the site.

“I hope it’s beautiful, I hope,” says a tourist from Holland.

The police have a considerable presence at the event, creating a rope corridor for tourists and another for VIPs and officials. The window of just six minutes of sunlight in the sanctuary passes quickly as visitors are ushered, in a circle, around the interior. Men shout “No photos!” but the clicking of cameras can still be heard.

The long wait for entry far exceeds visitors’ actual view of the sun on the sanctuary statues, which is over in just a few seconds as ushers keep the line moving.

  • Gas Prices to Go Up this Summer

I am very fortunate that throughout my life I’ve had many opportunities to travel. prices

One thing in all my adventures remains consistent. Whether I’ve gone to the moon, or to the Jersey shore for a few days, my parents ask me the same two questions, without fail, upon my return.

    1. What’d you eat?

    2. What was the price of gas there?

With summer approaching, gas prices are expected to rise. Experts are saying it will likely go into the $3 – $3.25 range. It’s not supposed to be as bad as last year when prices reached over $4 in some parts of the country.

Somewhat relieving is that the price increase is not due to American consumption – it’s because of the price of crude oil, for which the demand continues to go up from places like China.

Since our economy is still, well, nothing to brag about, do you think this forecasted price increase will impact you? How will it change your daily life? Or summer vacation plans?

Luckily, there are some tips to save on gas. Check these out.
