  • Two New PS3 Models Show Up On FCC

Many news outlets and bloggers have written about two new PS3 models that have recently shown up on the FCC – the CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B. The new models were filed under the alias “Sand Dollar Enterprise,” which is a name Sony used last Fall to slip the PS3 Slim past eagle-eyed enthusiasts who regularly scour the FCC. When new entries appear under the fake name it’s very natural for people to report on this and start speculating.

However, after looking at some of the FCC documents, we’re not really sure how much of a change these two new models will be. In the Class II permissive change letter, Sony asks for the FCC to refer to the Theory of Operation for what exactly changed. This document is obviously confidential and unable to view, but they do mention that the changes do not affect the RF characteristics.

This is quite confusing, because a Class II permissive change is usually one of three things:

    • When the antenna gain of the new antenna of the same type as the originally approved antenna is greater than the antenna gain of the originally tested antenna
    • When the emission levels or reported RF safety levels of the same antenna type increases
    • If the antenna is a different type, has a lower gain than the originally approved antenna and tests show that the spurious emission levels or reported RF safety levels have increased

What we do know is that there is no addition of 801.11n Wi-Fi. There are many theories out there, some of which I found interesting, such as backwards compatibility, USB 3.0, HDMI 1.4, 45nm GPU, and so forth. However, I have the feeling it may just be a lower-cost PS3 Slim. I guess we’ll see!

Switzerland’s Bank Sarasin says demographics and risk aversion are pushing up bond prices to nosebleed levels, and that the real value lies in stocks.

“This is why interest rates are grinding lower and lower and lower as the G4 population grows older and older,” said Sarasin CIO Burkhard Varnholt on Squawkbox.

At the same time, deflationary trends will offer a great opportunity to invest in Western companies that are active in Asia. Varnholt’s picks include Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Nestle, and Unilever.

Shaukat Tarin, now the former finance minister of Pakistan, has resigned. He’ll be working until February 28th and after that, Mr. Tarin will head over to Silkbank, of which he’s a major shareholder.

WSJ: Pakistan’s finance minister announced his resignation Tuesday, leaving a leadership vacuum in a country whose economy still depends to a great extent on overseas assistance.

Shaukat Tarin, who became finance minister in October 2008 when the economy of the strife-torn South Asian nation was on the brink of collapse, played a key role in sewing up aid from the International Monetary Fund that helped boost dwindling foreign-exchange reserves and avert a sovereign default.

Mr. Tarin claims he resigned to work on his business, which is perfectly reasonable.

McLaren MP4-12C undergoing testing – Click the image above to view the video after the jump

As McLaren Automotive moves toward production launch of its new MP4-12C next year, the workload for the engineers is intensifying to make sure everything functions as it should. Since England isn’t always the most pleasant place to do high speed testing this time of year, the latest batch of prototypes have been shipped south to Spain for more work.

The so-called XP Beta cars have dispensed with the black and white camo and are now clad simply in flat black vinyl. If the production twin-turbo V8 sounds anything like it does in the video the new McLaren will have one of the best notes on the road. The beta cars feature updated engines, gear ratios, cooling and electrical systems.

These test vehicles are integration prototypes intended to make sure all systems function properly together. Some of the test units are running high-speed durability test 24 hours a day with a team of two dozen engineers watching over them. One of the goals is to make sure that the MP4-12C remains stable at its maximum speed, something not all supercars manage to achieve. We can’t wait to try it out for ourselve, but before that happens check out the video after the jump.

  • Area economic index seems to show we’re headed toward recovery

Recovery, like recession, is a direction rather than a level, Bernard Goitein says. And as one of the area’s top business researchers, he believes the local economy is headed in the right direction.

Goitein, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Bradley University’s Foster College of Business Administration, bases his belief on the facts contained in the economic indicators of the Statistical Composite for the Peoria Economy.

The summary index of key local business and economic indicators rose slightly during the fourth quarter, stopping a slide of four consecutive quarters, according to the report issued Monday.

“What we are seeing now are the effects of the receding national recession. We are seeing some stabilization and growth. We are recovering,” said Goitein, who compiles the SCOPE report for the Journal Star each quarter.

Leading economic indicators reflect the improvement and could be a harbinger for recovery to strengthen in the coming months, he said.

“Is anything guaranteed? No, especially since you can look at the numbers and see that, overall, things are still fairly weak. The declines appear to have stopped, which must happen for recovery to happen, but there are still a lot of people unemployed who are going to start running out of unemployment benefits if they don’t get extended,” Goitein said.

“But a lot of the things they said would happen within a year of the stimulus package are starting to happen. Job losses have stopped, fewer people are being punched out of work, the housing market is still improving.”

The Summary Index rose 1.2 percent in the fourth quarter to 97.3. While still below where it was a year ago, that is an indicator of recovery.

More detailed analyses of various data, most of which are seasonally adjusted, show they concur. That includes the labor picture, which declined in each of the first three quarters – the second quarter being the worst – but was improved in the fourth quarter.

Gains outnumbered losses for the payrolls of the key industries in the Peoria-Pekin metropolitan statistical area from the third quarter to the fourth quarter; four improved and only one fell. Others were stable, the report showed.

Local government and professional/business services had the largest quarter-to-quarter gains at 2.5 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively.

While the number of manufacturing jobs continued to slide – by less than half a percentage point in the fourth quarter – it was at a far less precipitous rate from the first three quarters of the year. Another good sign in that regard is that Caterpillar Inc. showed gains in sales and revenues in the fourth quarter.

Construction jobs remained stable third quarter to fourth quarter, but for the third consecutive quarter the number of single-family residential building permits increased – by 29.1 percent from the third quarter 2009 – indicating future activity in that industry.

Other leading indicators were positive from third quarter to fourth quarter, as well. Job openings posted by employers grew by 6.3 percent (but were down 46.5 percent from a year ago), as did the confidence of the employers by 23.9 percent. The number of initial unemployment claims, while up 78.5 percent from a year earlier, dropped significantly from the third quarter, 48.9 percent.

The local housing industry continues to improve; in fact, the number of houses sold increased for the third consecutive quarter on a seasonally adjusted basis.

“These indicators show a pattern of improvement in recent quarters and increases in leading indicators, signaling further growth in local business conditions during the coming months,” the report said.

  • 81-year-old was driving car that hit Florida tour bus

LAKE PLACID, Fla. (AP) – The driver of a car that investigators say hit a tour bus and caused it to roll, killing two people, is “shook up” and won’t comment on the case, her husband said Tuesday.

Betty J. Adams, 81, failed to yield while turning onto a rural highway and hit the side of the bus, according to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report. The bus ran off the road and rolled over at least twice, ejecting several passengers.

A man answering the telephone at Adams’ home on Tuesday said he was her husband – and that he and his wife wouldn’t comment on the crash.

“She’s real bad shook up,” the man said, declining to give his name.

The charter bus, which was carrying 32 people, was driven by 69-year-old Larry L. Metzger, who suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The highway patrol said two people died at the scene, while three people had critical injuries. The rest of the injuries ranged from serious to minor, and all but one of the people on the bus were taken to local hospitals. Adams wasn’t injured.

The names of the victims who died in the crash weren’t immediately released. A Florida Highway Patrol lieutenant did not returned a telephone message or an e-mail early Tuesday morning.

No charges had been filed Monday night.

The passengers, who ranged in age from 66 to 87, had traveled to the area from around the U.S. to participate in an educational program affiliated with South Florida Community College in Avon Park.

The group had just visited murals in Lake Placid, located about 30 miles northwest of Lake Okeechobee, and was headed back to a nearby hotel when the accident occurred.

  • Consumer confidence falls sharply in February

NEW YORK (AP) – A monthly poll showed consumers’ confidence took a surprisingly sharp fall in February amid rising job worries. The decline ends three straight months of improvement and raises concerns about the economic recovery.

The Conference Board said Tuesday its Consumer Confidence Index fell almost 11 points to 46 in February, down from a revised 56.5 in January. Analysts were expecting only a slight decrease to 55.

The increasing pessimism is a big blow to hopes that consumer spending will power an economic recovery. Economists watch the confidence numbers closely because consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

The February reading is a long way from what’s considered healthy: A reading above 90 means the economy is on solid footing. Above 100 signals strong growth.

The news sent stocks lower, overshadowing retailer reports that showed stronger holiday profits. The Dow Jones industrial average falling 74.29 points to 10,309.09 by midmorning.

One gauge, measuring consumers’ assessment of current conditions, dropped to 19.4 from 25.2, the lowest level since 1983. The other barometer, which measures their outlook over the next six months and had been rising since October 2009, fell to 63.8 from 77.3.

The overall Consumer Confidence Index hit a historic low of 25.3 in February 2009 but then enjoyed a three-month climb to 54.8 in May, fueled by signs the economy might be stabilizing. Since then, it has been mired in a narrow range, dropping as low as 47, as rising unemployment took a toll, before climbing again for a three-month stretch.

February’s reading is well below the 61.4 figure in September 2008, when the financial crisis intensified with the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The index has had an average reading of 95.6 since the Conference Board starting tracking the figures in 1967.

“The combination of earnings and job anxieties is likely to continue to curb spending,” Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.

The downbeat report on confidence was released amid encouraging news about the housing market. According to a key housing index, also released Tuesday, home prices rose for the seventh straight month in December, a sign of price stability as the U.S. housing market continues its bumpy road to recovery.

The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 0.3 percent from November to December, to a seasonally adjusted reading of 145.87. The index was off 3.1 percent from December last year, nearly matching analysts’ estimates that it would fall by 3.2 percent.

But a solid job market is critical to consumers’ boosting their spending and the overall of health of the economy.

The overall economy expanded at an annual rate of 5.7 percent in the fourth quarter, but only about one-fourth of that growth came from consumers. That marked the second quarterly increase in a row after four quarter of decreases. But continued high unemployment could lead consumers to further cut their spending, and that could dampen economic growth.

Many economists expect new jobs to be created in coming months. Unemployment fell to 9.7 percent in January from 10 percent in December, and employers shed 20,000 jobs. But they still worry that joblessness will climb back up by next summer as unemployed people who abandoned job searches start trying again.

The results, based on a sample of 5,000 U.S. households with cutoff date was Feb. 17, showed consumers’ assessment of current job opportunities and job prospects over the next six months eroded.

Those saying that jobs are “hard to get” rose to 47.7 percent from 46.5 percent, while those saying jobs are “plentiful” decreased to 3.6 percent from 4.4 percent.

As for the outlook for the job market, the share of consumers expecting fewer jobs increased to 24.6 percent from 18.9 percent. Those anticipating more jobs will become available in the months ahead declined to 13.4 percent from 15.8 percent. The proportion of consumers expecting an increase in their incomes dropped to 9.5 percent from 11.0 percent.

Traditionally, jobs don’t improve a recovery in consumer spending and confidence. But Gary Thayer, chief economist at Wells Fargo Advisors, believes that this time around, big improvements in jobs, confidence and spending will be “marching together.”

“I think shoppers are going to wait until things get better,” he said.

  • N.Y. bomb plotter plea deal might help broaden case

NEW YORK (AP) – Distressed over the deaths of civilians in his native Afghanistan, a man who once operated a coffee cart near the World Trade Center site hatched a plan to join the Taliban and fight the U.S. military.

Najibullah Zazi traveled to Pakistan in August 2008 but never made it to Afghanistan. Al-Qaida operatives spotted him. They had more ambitious plans and conspired with him to try to help him die a martyr in a bombing of the New York subway system, he admitted Monday.

“I had discussions with al-Qaida leaders, including target locations, such as New York City subways,” he said.

Zazi, a former Colorado airport shuttle driver, pleaded guilty Monday in Brooklyn federal court to conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiring to commit murder in a foreign country and providing material support for a terrorist organization. The 25-year-old, part of what prosecutors consider one of the most serious U.S. terror threats since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, faces life in prison without parole when he’s sentenced in June.

The jailed Zazi had recently volunteered information about the bomb plot in the first step toward a plea deal, The Associated Press learned earlier this month from officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the terror investigation was ongoing. His cooperation suggests prosecutors hope to expand the case and bring charges against other suspects.

Already charged are an imam, a cab driver and Zazi’s uncle and father, who’s been accused of trying to dispose of chemicals.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in Washington that the planned bombings “could have been devastating.”

“This attempted attack on our homeland was real, it was in motion and it would have been deadly,” he said.

Zazi admitted using notes taken at an al-Qaida training camp in Waziristan, Pakistan, to build homemade explosives with beauty supplies purchased in the Denver suburbs and cooked up in a Colorado hotel room. He then drove the materials to New York just before the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

His plan was to assemble the bombs over the weekend and detonate them within days.

Asked by federal Judge Raymond J. Dearie on Monday if he had been willing to be a suicide bomber, Zazi said, “Yes, your honor.”

While entering the city, Zazi was stopped by police for a routine traffic violation on the George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey and New York. Suspicious officers allowed him to go free but kept a close watch on his movements.

“The plan was to conduct martyrdom operation on the subway lines in Manhattan as soon as the material was ready,” Zazi said.

Sometime after the traffic stop, Zazi realized authorities were investigating him.

“At that point, we threw away the detonator explosives and other materials,” he said.

Authorities raided several Queens apartments, including a friend’s home where Zazi had stayed. Zazi was arrested.

One of the people familiar with the investigation said that Zazi told prosecutors that he made roughly 2 pounds of a powerful and highly unstable explosive called triacetone triperoxide, or TATP. The same explosive was used by would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid in 2001 and by the terrorists who carried out the London bombings that killed 52 people in 2005.

Zazi decided to cooperate after being warned that his mother could face criminal immigration charges, one of the people familiar with his case told the AP.

Zazi’s father was accused this month of trying to get rid of chemicals and other evidence. Prosecutors, after initially demanding that he be jailed in Brooklyn without bail, agreed to a deal on Feb. 17 releasing him on $50,000 bond and allowing him to return to his home in suburban Denver.

By contrast, bond for a Queens imam charged with lying to the FBI about phone contact with Zazi when Zazi was in New York was set at $1.5 million. A friend of Zazi’s, a New York cab driver, was jailed without bail on a similar lying charge.

Authorities say the cabbie and another former high school classmate of Zazi’s, Adis Medunjanin, traveled to Pakistan with Zazi. Medunjanin has pleaded not guilty to charges he conspired to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and remains jailed.

Officials earlier confirmed Zazi’s uncle had been arraigned on a felony count in secret, a sign he could be cooperating.

Holder used the case to rebut Republican critics who’ve said the Democratic administration should try such terrorism suspects before military tribunals rather than through civilian courts.

“To take this tool out of our hands, to denigrate this tool,” Holder said, “flies in the face of facts and is more about politics than it is about facts.”

  • Twitter Trend: New Climate Agency Head Tried to Suppress Data, Critics Charge, by Ed Barnes, FoxNews.com

    Article Tags: ClimateGate

Thomas Karl, the head of Obama’s new Climate Change office has been criticized for trying to suppress contradictory scientific data on climate change.

The scientist who has been put in charge of the Commerce Department’s new climate change office is coming under attack from both sides of the global warming debate over his handling of what they say is contradictory scientific data related to the subject.

Thomas Karl, 58, was appointed to oversee the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center, an ambitious new office that will collect climate change data and disseminate it to businesses and communities.

According to Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, the office will “help tackle head-on the challenges of mitigating and adapting to climate change. In the process, we’ll discover new technologies, build new businesses and create new jobs.”

Karl, who has played a pivotal role in key climate decisions over the past decade, has kept a low profile as director of National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) since 1998, and he has led all of the NOAA climate services since 2009. His name surfaced numerous times in leaked “climate-gate” e-mails from the University of East Anglia, but there was little in the e-mails that tied him to playing politics with climate data. Mostly, the e-mails show he was in the center of the politics of climate change decisions

  • Olympics: Thou Shalt Not Tweet (Without Paying Up)

Every time you think that the Olympics can’t get more ridiculous with its attempts to abuse trademark law to control its name, they go one step further into ridiculousness. Following the threat to goggle maker UVEX for mentioning skiier and gold medalist Lindsey Vonn on its website, the US Olympic Committee is threatening Red Bull and Verizon for daring to tweet about the Olympics without first paying up. I’m not kidding. Both companies showed some basic Olympic spirit with some simple tweets, supporting some winning athletes. Here’s Red Bull’s “offending” twitter message:

    We’re rooting for you @LindseyVonn @Shaun_White @GregBretzz and @Drahlves in the 2010 Winter #Olympics!

    And Verizon’s:

Who are the REAL American Idols? Shaun White, Lindsey Vaughn & Shani Davis draw more viewers than American Idol

Seriously. And the US Olympics straight-faced response?

“When people partake in this kind of ambush behavior, it hurts American athletes.”

Yes. Two simple tweets from companies cheering on successful Olympians are considered “ambush behavior” that “hurts American athletes.” Apparently, these threats from the Olympics worked on at least Red Bull who pulled its Twitter message supporting the athletes.

This goes beyond the typical abuse of trademark law to ridiculous levels. While Verizon hasn’t yet pulled its post, I would hope that it will stand up for basic free speech rights that say the Olympics has no right to tell it what it can and cannot tweet in support of the games.

  • Experts: Gas prices in Chicago to top $3

Gas prices are headed up to above $3 a gallon for regular, and experts say it isn’t because of higher demand.

The average per-gallon price of unleaded regular gasoline in Chicago jumped 10 cents in the last week to $2.82, which is 84 cents higher than a year ago, according to AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express.

Nationally, the price is $2.65 a gallon, up 3 cents a gallon from last week and 73 cents a gallon higher than a year ago.

Pump prices typically rise this time of year as refineries switch to a more expensive grade of gas.

But prices are climbing even after millions of Americans got pink slips and kept their cars in the driveway.

What’s pushing prices higher is the crude oil that’s used to make motor fuel, said Fred Rozell of the Oil Price Information Service.

Crude is an international commodity that has become ever more expensive as demand grows in China.

As crude prices increase, so do gas gas prices.

  • Peterson trial to begin June 14

A Will County judge has ordered jury selection to begin June 14 in the murder trial of former Bolingbrook police officer Drew Peterson.

Judge Stephen White set the date Tuesday. In August, White called about 240 potential jurors to the courthouse to fill out questionnaires and tell them to avoid any media reports about the case – in an effort to protect the potential jury pool.

Peterson has pleaded innocent to first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his ex-wife, Kathleen Savio. He’s been named a suspect but isn’t charged in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson. He denies any involvement in her disappearance.

The judge still has to decide if he’ll allow the jury at Drew Peterson’s trial to hear hearsay evidence – statements attributed to Savio and Stacy Peterson.

Lexus CT 200h – Click above for image gallery

The World Car Fans crew have received what appears to be an official brochure for the Lexus CT 200h ahead of its reveal next week at the Geneva Motor Show, and while the documents are light on details, we’ve got our first good glimpse of the brand’s Euro-bound hybrid hatch.

The styling has been toned down considerably from the LF-Ch concept that debut in Frankfurt last year, melding a few cues from the IS sedan and a profile remarkably similar to the Toyota Auris.

Coming in at 170 inches long, 69.5 inches wide and 56 inches tall, with a 102-inch wheelbase, the CT 200h is suspended by a MacPherson suspension in front, a double wishbone arrangement in the rear and 17-inch multi-spoke wheels.

Motivation comes courtesy of a 1.8-liter VVT-i-equipped four-cylinder gasoline engine putting out an unspecified output, with a electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission feeding power to the front wheels. A nickel-metal hydride battery pack is mounted below the cargo hold, and three driving modes are available – Eco, Normal and Sport – along with the ability to drive in full EV mode.

We’ll have full details on the Lexus CT 200h next week once the shindig in Switzerland gets underway, but until then, check out the brochure in the gallery below.

     Windows Phone 7 Chassis 2 and 3?

In an recent Australian podcast  Microsoft Australia Developer Evangelist hosts (Michael Kordahi and Andrew Coates) revealed some more information about the other possible Windows Phone 7 series form factors.

We already know Chassis 1 describes a full touch slab device with a high performance processor.  It now appears Chassis 2 describes a portrait device with a sliding keyboard, like the Palm Treo (or more likely the Pure leaked by Gizmodo).

The final Chassis design, number 3, was not specified. One podcaster suggested a candybar, but I suspect a bigger likelihood would be a landscape slider like the Turtle, also leaked by Gizmodo and confirmed by many other sources.

Windows Phone 7 will only have a very limited form factors, to make it easier for developers to create applications without worrying about variation in performance, resolution, RAM, control surfaces and the many features which often help us decide which handset to get.

Do any of our readers regret this paring down in form factors we can expect over the next year, or is this standardization move long overdue?  Let us know below.
