  • Akio writes article in WSJ, says Toyota will create new ‘Smart Pedal’ braking system

Akio Toyoda, who will appear before the House Committee tomorrow, has written a piece for the Wall Street Journal outlining steps the company is taking to set a new benchmark in automotive safety.

“The first step is taking care of vehicles on the road today, Toyoda said. “But it also means making even safer vehicles in the future—and being more open and transparent about any safety issues that arise.”

“I have personally placed the highest priority on improving quality, not quantity.” he said. “All Toyota vehicles bear my name. When cars are damaged, it is as though I am as well.”

Toyoda said that Toyota will be one of the first mass automaker to produce an advanced brake-override systems, which will be standard on all Toyota models worldwide. Known as the “Smart Pedal” braking system, the technology will automatically cut engine when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are pushed simultaneously.

“In short, I pledge that Toyota will set a new standard for transparency and speed of response on safety issues,” Toyoda said. “We also will strive to lead on advanced safety and environmental technologies.”

  • Expert tells ABC News electronic flaw results in sudden acceleration in Toyotas

According to Dave Gilbert, a professor of Southern Illinois University’s auto technology department, a flaw in the design of the company’s acceleration system prevents the vehicle’s onboard computer from detecting and stopping certain short circuits that can trigger sudden speed surges.

Gilbert told ABC News, that the Toyota computer does not record an error code, nor does it activate the “fail safe” system designed to shut down power.

“This is a dangerous condition, it is not fail safe,” said Gilbert in an interview to be broadcast Monday on ABC World News. ”If there was this kind of fault, it will never set an error code,” said Gilbert. As a result, he said, there will be “no fingerprints, no trail” when Toyota engineers inspect a car after an accident or incident of sudden acceleration.

Hit the jump for the video showing Gilbert’s finding.

In a statement released Monday night in response to Glibert’s finding, Toyota said:

“…what Mr. Gilbert described would not cause unintended acceleration to occur. In fact, under the abnormal condition described last week by Mr. Gilbert, if there is a short with low resistance between the two signals, the electronic throttle control system illuminates the ‘check engine’ light and the vehicle enters into a fail-safe mode of engine idle operation. If there is a short with high resistance, outside the range of “check engine” light illumination, the accelerator pedal continues to be responsive to driver input and the vehicle will return to the idle condition when the foot is taken off of the accelerator pedal. Unintended acceleration would not occur.”

Toyota said that it was surprised to learn that Gilbert appears now to be making a different claim regarding the electronic throttle control system and in a vehicle other than as described to Toyota last week. It said that it the company welcomes the opportunity to evaluate the Avalon sedan shown in the story and the method by which Gilbert caused the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally. it said that it welcomes the attendance of ABC News at any such evaluation of this vehicle and Mr. Gilbert’s testing.

  • Orland Park plans community garden

A year ago, a resident sowed the seeds for a community garden in Orland Park.

On Monday, the village board’s parks and recreation committee approved a conceptual plan for a garden at Discovery Park, Wolf Road and Brook Hill Drive.

The village’s community gardens program still needs village board approval, but Trustee Patricia Gira, who chairs the committee, said the plan is to kick it off this growing season.

Once approved, 20 400-square-foot plots will be eligible for lease at the park. The rental fee would be $25 for residents until April 15 and $30 thereafter. Non-residents can rent space based on availability for $35, beginning May 1.

The village will till the soil at the start of the season and tap into an existing water line to provide gardeners with a water source.

Gira said community gardens were popular during World War II, known then as “victory gardens.”

But this community garden will be part of Orland Park’s green initiative, meaning that gardeners will not be allowed to use weed killer and will be asked to only use organic pesticides and fertilizers, Gira said.

She said the village will gauge response to the program and determine whether more gardens would be welcome next year.

“This will be our test program,” Gira said.

  • Chicago Heights Park District to borrow for improvements

The Chicago Heights Park District Board agreed Monday night to take out a loan to pay for capital expenses.

David Gonzalez, the park district’s financial consultant, said the district will solicit bids from local banks for a loan of about $1.4 million that must be paid back by December.

The district expects to pay between $25,000 and $40,000 in interest, depending on the interest rate obtained, Gonzalez said.

The money will cover maintenance work at the district’s parks and recreation building, parking lots and two 9-hole golf courses among other improvements, according to district officials.

  • Little Guys moving from Glenwood to Mokena

The Little Guys Home Electronics store is bidding goodbye to Glenwood and making the move to Mokena, Mokena officials confirmed Monday night.

The electronics shop plans to move into the Hickory Creek shopping center near LaGrange Road and 191st Street in the next three to four weeks, Mayor Joe Werner said during the village board meeting.

“We’re really excited to have them,” Werner said.

No one from Little Guys was at the board meeting.

Little Guys will occupy a 10,000-square-foot space in the center that has been vacant since Trendsetters College of Cosmetology moved out years ago.

The village began courting Little Guys last year after hearing that the business’ owners were mulling a move to a different location, Werner said. Although Little Guys had “a couple of other sites they were seriously considering,” he said, Mokena officials credit the town’s easy access to Interstate 80 and lower Will County tax rates with helping to seal the deal.

“That location, for a company like theirs … it’s a good spot,” the mayor said.

Little Guys has been in business for 15 years in Glenwood, according to the company’s Web site. The business specializes in electronics system design and installation and touts its strong focus on customer service and staff expertise.

  • Have American Thinker disproven global warming? by John Cook from SkepticalScience.com: UPDATED by Gary Thompson

Article Tags: Comment, Gary Thompson, iPhone App, Updated

As they say “every cloud has a silver lining”, John Cook at SkepticalScience.com (the site that has put together the iPhone app to spin the Skeptic side of Skepticism see WARNING! New Site set up as an iphone app to put down “Climate Realists” part 1 and part 2) has taken note of the “AGW smoking gun” The Gary Thompson article from the AmericanThinker.com, and seems less confused about what we (us stupid skeptics!) have to say.

So what do we learn from the American Thinker article. Gary Thompson cites peer-reviewed papers but his analysis consists of eyeballing graphs while spurning the peer-reviewed data analysis. This approach leads to the opposite conclusion of the papers’ authors. I first encountered Harries 2001 when documenting the empirical evidence for an enhanced greenhouse effect. After reading the paper, I had many questions. Rather than let the gaps in my understanding lead me to think I knew more than the authors, I emailed my questions to the lead author John Harries, an approachable scientist who was forthcoming with prompt and detailed replies. The American Thinker article does not disprove the enhanced greenhouse effect. It does however provide further evidence for the Dunning-Kruger effect.

The accident occurred at George J. Roll & Sons, a building material supplier, at 2258 Vermont St. No one was available from the company on Monday to comment. Blue Island police would not comment on the death.

Fuller’s son, Brian Fuller Jr., 23, said his father had worked with the company for more than 15 years and was in charge of loading trucks in the drywall and lumber yards.

“He worked a strenuous job that was incredibly hard, and no one else would do,” Fuller said. “He put my sister and I through college.”

Fuller Jr. described his father as a family man who was “there for us.” In his free time, he was an avid muskie fisherman, he said.

Fuller Sr. also is survived by his wife Kathleen and daughter Alyssa, Fuller Jr. said.

  • Amazon Has To Pay Microsoft To Use Linux?

Every few years, Microsoft tries to convince the world that Linux violates its patents. Usually the company gives some arbitrary number of patents. However, when asked to show proof, the company goes quiet. It’s the usual FUD. Last year was the first time the issue ever actually showed up in a lawsuit, when Microsoft sued TomTom, but for the most part, it’s still not clear what about Linux infringes on Microsoft patents. Still, that doesn’t mean Microsoft can’t use such FUD to get others to pay up. The latest is that Amazon and Microsoft have done a patent cross-licensing deal. These sorts of “we won’t sue you, if you don’t sue us” deals are pretty common in the tech world, and hardly noteworthy, other than the fact that apparently some of the patents Amazon are getting protected against being sued over — concern how it uses Linux:

The deal covers both Amazon’s Kindle product as well as the company’s use of Linux-based servers.

Even though it’s a straight cross-licensing deal, it doesn’t sound like any money changed hands, Amazon still had to pay cash to Microsoft, on top of effectively paying more by licensing its own patents. It does seem pretty problematic, doesn’t it, when a company has to “pay” Microsoft (whether in cash or via licenses to its own patents) just to use Linux? Perhaps it’s time to redefine the “Microsoft tax.”

  • You Could Not Make It Up: Do climate change sceptics give scepticism a bad name?

Article Tags: You could not make it up

There is a crucial difference between scepticism and non-belief in the face of overwhelming evidence

In January a group of self-declared “sceptics” hit the headlines with an attention-grabbing publicity stunt. If you instinctively interpret that sentence as a reference to the battle-scarred topic of climate change, then it is a mark of how successfully those opposed to the scientific consensus on climate change have appropriated the term sceptic”.

In fact, the event in question is the mass homeopathy “overdose” staged by the Merseyside Skeptics. Do the Merseyside Skeptics (and hundreds of other groups like them) share much common ground with the army of Freedom of Information requesters currently swarming around climate science databases? Or could it be that climate change sceptics are giving wider scepticism a bad name?

Over the past three months climate change scepticism seems to have reached new levels. The Guardian’s investigation into the emails hacked from the University of East Anglia has shone a rather uncomfortable light into the sock-drawer of science. But it has revealed nothing that challenges the fact that the climate is changing – or that human activity is responsible. Trust has been diminished, embarrassing exchanges have been revealed, but the clunking wheels of the anti-climate change lobby have gone into overdrive, falsely claiming that the case for human-caused climate change has been discredited.

Climate change sceptics often position themselves as the antidote to the hysterical, exaggerated claims of climate scientists and environmentalists, adopting the tools and language of “rational enquiry”. But something is missing from this picture – where are the voices of the truly sceptical thinkers that the climate sceptics claim to represent?

Click source to read more and why not try and correct this article in their comments section, it’s “Climate Realists” who now have the edge and NOT sceptics!

  • Credit Suisse: Here Are Five Reasons To Buy Stocks Right Now

    netherlands-windmills.jpg

(This post originally appeared at the author’s blog)

Credit Suisse recently reiterated their call to buy the dips (see here for the original call).   Despite being bearish overall on 2010, they maintain that the first half of 2010 could be a fairly constructive year for equities (see their full year outlook here).   In the near-term, they continue to like stocks due to 5 primary reasons.

Over the last few months the markets have been roiled by sovereign debt fears, China tightening fears, Fed actions, and bank regulation.  Credit Suisse says these fears are all overblown.

First, they say the fears in Greece are substantially overblown and will not lead to a global bond funding crisis:

    1) Fears of a global sovereign credit crisis are overdone: US, Japan and German bond yields have fallen, as has gold (hardly the sign of a funding crisis). The problems in peripheral Europe are akin to those of California in the US: Severe deflation is required, but the problem is confined. A global bond funding crisis will not be seen, in our opinion, until private sector credit growth returns (probably in 2011)—government interest payments as a % of GDP are still low, at 1.3% of GDP in the US. The risk, in our view, is that the UK could end up with a minority government, which might bring forward a UK funding crisis.

Second, CS says the fears about China are overdone.  Growth remains robust in China.  Other countries can only wish to have such a problem.  As of now, it is not a major concern:

    2) Worries about China  tightening:  We believe China is likely to grow at around 10% until there is major economic, as opposed to financial, overheating, which would be reflected in a sharp acceleration in wage growth and export price inflation.

A lot has been said about the end of quantitative easing and what will occur in bond markets when the Fed stops buying.  CS says demand for bonds will remain high regardless of the Fed’s actions.

    3) The end of QE: We think banks will replace central banks as the major buyers of bonds—and overall monetary conditions are still extremely loose.

Regulation is unlikely to change the fundamental picture of the big banks.  Banks are and have been cheap for some time.  Regulation will not change their value and CS still likes the risk/reward in the sector.

    4) Obama-ing the banks: Even assuming regulation reduces banks profitability to pre-1990 levels, this would leave the fair-value tangible book multiple at 1.1x. This implies only about 10% downside for Continental European banks and 15% downside for US banks. Meanwhile, bank lending conditions have loosened significantly.

Lastly, CS sees improvement in the jobs market in the coming months.  The one great hurdle during the recovery has been and remains jobs.  Job growth should lead to higher equity markets in the coming months.

    5) Worries about US employment momentum stalling: We think corporates have over-shed labour (hours worked are down 9% and GDP is down 2% from peak) and we believe non-farm payrolls will continue to improve.

As the equity markets overcome these near-term negative trends the equity markets could surge above 1200 according to CS.  That, however, is all likely to change in the second half when new headwinds hit the market.
