  • Jewel Osco eliminating 110 management jobs

CHICAGO (AP) – Jewel Osco, the Chicago area’s largest grocery chain, says it will eliminate 110 store management jobs in an effort to be more competitive.

The layoffs announced Friday affect facilities where the chain operates Jewel supermarkets and Osco drug stores under one roof.

Jewel has traditionally operated such stores with two managers, one for the Jewel food business, the other for the Osco pharmacy operation. The company said in Friday’s statement that in the future it will have just one manager for each store, leading to 110 lost store director jobs.

All of those who are laid off will receive a severance package.

  • Dozens rescued in extra-alarm North Side fire

CHICAGO (STMW)  — Firefighters brought two dozen residents of a Rogers Park apartment building down to safety from an extra-alarm fire early Saturday. Six people were injured in the blaze, the cause of which was not yet known as of about 2:30 a.m.

Firefighters found heavy fire when they arrived on the scene of a fire at 6912 N. Ashland Ave. about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

Firefighters immediately put up seven ground ladders, in addition to three ladders anchored by fire trucks, to the 4-story building and began rescuing residents, some of whom were calling for help from the building’s windows, Langford said.

They rescued two dozen people by bringing them down via the ladders, Langford said. Some residents got out on their own, but “the great majority [of the residents] were brought down by ladders from the first arriving companies.”

The fire was on the second and third floors of the building, Langford said.

An EMS Plan I was called and a 2-11 alarm was given because of the heavy fire they found immediately upon arriving at the scene, as well as the large number of rescues made, Langford explained.

An EMS Plan I sends at least five ambulances to the scene. A 2-11 alarm sends at least eight engines, four trucks, two tower ladders, five battalion chiefs, a district chief, a deputy district chief, a squad company and a command van to the scene.

Since there were six people injured, the emergency responses called for turned out to be “a good calculation,” Langford said.

Three people were taken to hospitals — two to St. Francis in Evanston and one to Swedish Covenant Hospital — and three others were treated on the scene and refused transport to hospitals, Langford said. He did not have any information on the people who were taken to hospitals.

The 2-11 alarm was struck out about 1:40 a.m. and the EMS plan was secured by 2 a.m.

The extent of the damage was not known but 30 people were displaced by the fire, Langford said.

The Red Cross was notified and offering assistance to people, according to a spokeswoman with the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire was unknown as of about 2:30 a.m.

Streets were blocked off around the affected building, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. Southbound on North Ashland Avenue to West Morse Avenue; eastbound from West Morse Avenue to North Greenview Avenue; and North Ashland Avenue to Jarvis were blocked off, according to Gaines.

  • IRS offering tax preparation assistance

CHICAGO (WBBM)  — The IRS is now staffing five offices throughout the state on the weekend to provide help to people with tax questions, especially taxpayers hit hard by the economy.

A spokesman for the IRS says individuals may be eligible for tax credits or deductions that may help them save money on their taxes this year, including the earned income tax credit if there was a decline in income or change in marital status.

Also under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, taxpayers with three or more children get an extra boost with a larger credit this year.

And the IRS says taxpayers who aren’t able to cover their full tax bill by April 15 can arrange for a payment schedule or extension.

The IRS has offices locally including:

    Chicago – 230 S. Dearborn Street
    Orland Park
    – 14479 South John Humphrey Drive

Schiller Park – 5100 River Road

These offices will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Careful budgeting allows for library face-lift

DANVILLE – On Monday, work will begin at the Danville Public Library that will extend tile surfaces and replace the original, 15-year-old carpeting.

The $167,000 project includes carpet contract, shelf moving contract and architectural fees, according to Suzie Halftown, library business manager.

“We’ve been able to carefully put back funds over the years and accumulate a reserve for when this time came,” Halftown said. “The wonderful thing is, we are able to do this without asking the city for money and without having to close the library entirely.”

In another project, the library has been gradually having furniture reupholstered. The library opened in November 1995.

Library visitors will have to detour from the lobby through the first floor meeting room and children’s department for access to the library. A temporary check desk will be set up in the meeting room. Tile, matching that in the lobby, will replace carpet into the entry area beyond the glass double doors, surround the check out desk area and extend to the elevator and second-floor stairway accesses. The second floor will be closed during this work.

“For anyone needing items from the second floor, library staff can retrieve materials via an employees-only area,” said Phill Cohee, assistant library director. “Public Internet access will be down from Feb. 22 until the project is completed for two to three weeks.”

Activities planned for the meeting room will experience little to no inconvenience including the upcoming used book sale.

The library had moved up the date of its Spring Used Book Sale to avoid conflicts with the renovation work, but vendors were ready sooner. The “Not-Quite-Spring” book sale will take place in the lobby and first-floor meeting room from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 27.

In addition to the usual paperbacks, hardbacks, videos and tapes for children and adults, the selection of used magazines will be quite a bit larger.

Trends have found that more people are using online versions of magazine back issues, so the Danville library will move a lot of past issues to the sale. The local staff surveyed patrons for six months to see which back issues of magazines were actually being used. The result was a decision to reduce the number of back issues from five to two years.

With the library’s subscription to Wilson Select Plus, available through the LINC computerized card catalog, patrons have access to the full text articles of 2,500 magazine titles.

At the book sale, magazines will be sold in bundles, rather than as single issues, in the lobby area.

On March 1, Pro Lift Movers will begin moving entire book shelf units. Shelves will roll out, old carpeting removed and replaced by carpet squares.

“Carpet squares are what libraries are going to,” Cohee said. “Carpet squares allow for torn or stained areas to be removed and replaced more easily and independently.”

Pro Lift Movers will work two areas of the library at a time. After relocating some first-floor shelves, workers move to the second floor. The movers and Carpet Weavers will alternate work spaces until the project is completed.

“During this process, some shelving units may be pretty tight, in which case a staff member can retrieve any items needed,” Cohee said.

“The reading section will have very limited seating as the shelving units are moved around during the project. Library staff will be moving chairs computer tables, computer equipment and other furniture out of their regular areas to make room for temporarily relocating book shelf units.

“We know it’s going to inconvenience people some, but not for long and in the meantime we all will have to be patient with the mess,” Cohee said.

Call the library at 477-5220 if you have questions.

  • District plans budget cuts, layoffs to counter shortfall

MAHOMET – The Mahomet-Seymour school district has announced proposed cuts to its 2011 budget totaling $643,211, including employee layoffs and some cuts to programs.

According to a letter released to the media and public on Friday, the cuts are a direct result of the state’s revenue crisis.

The state is currently running an estimated $12 billion deficit.

“We’ll have to take precautionary steps, because there are some question marks out there right now,” Keith Oates, superintendent of Mahomet-Seymour schools, said.

Those question marks include the lack of a state budget for fiscal year 2011.

Oates said the district is waiting to see what Gov. Pat Quinn will say in his budget address on March 10.

Until then, the district is working with what it knows. The district is estimating a deficit of $593,825 for fiscal year 2011, based on the fact that there will be no increase in general state aid.

Oates said the state usually increased the foundation level, which usually meant more money for the district.

There also will be no increases in the administrators’ and administrative staff salaries or for non-union salaries.

Reductions and cuts had to be proposed because the Mahomet-Seymour Education Association union labor contract will expire in August.

Employees must be given 60 days notice before the end of the school year if their employment will be affected by cuts. But if the district starts to hear positive information, changes may be made to reductions.

“Just because we’re doing this in March, nothing stops us from reinstating some or all of these reductions,” Oates said.

Cuts being considered include technology, district-wide decentralized budgets, enrichment programs, reductions to number of classes, enrichment program, a high school assistant cross country coach, high school multi-media club, high school chess club, intramural programs, junior high speech team sponsor, a custodial position and a special education teacher.

Oates said it is important to remember that these are only proposed reductions.

That being the case, the board is scheduled to hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at Middletown Early Childhood Center to hear public comment. The board will take action on the items at its March 15 meeting.

Proposed reductions being considered for FY11 Budget:

    Technology $100,000

Districtwide decentralized budgets (10 percent reduction) $72,165

One kindergarten class (reduce from 12 half-day sections to 10 half-day sections) $45,870

One second-grade class (class size will increase from 22 to 24 with eight sections rather than nine) $45,870

One third-grade class (class size will increase from 22 to 24 with eight sections rather than nine) $45,870

One fourth-grade class (class size will increase from 22 to 24 with eight sections rather than nine) $45,870

One fifth-grade class (class size will increase from 22 to 24 with eight sections rather than nine) $45,870

    Enrichment Program $116,500

One full-time high school position $45,870

High School assistant cross country coach $7,511

    High School multi-media club $2,781

    High School chess club $2,801

    High School intramural $1,647

Junior High Speech Team sponsor $2,431

    Junior High Intramural programs $4,080

    Custodial Position $35,140

    Full-time Education teacher $22,935

  • Use your HTC HD2 as a metal detector

metalDetector Here’s a cool toy app created by 6Fg8, a member of XDA-Developers.com.

The software for the HTC HD2 uses the built-in compass to detect metal nearby by the deviation of the earth’s magnetic field included by the metal.

    How to use:

Place your device flat on a surface. After starting the app, the gauge should show zero. If it doesn’t, take your device and write a couple of "eights" in the air (this is to get rid of magnetism which might get stuck in the sensors).

Then use a pair of scissor or something the like and move it slowly to the right side of your device. At a distance of approx. 5 cm. the gauge should start to move. Take your device and move it with its right side near metals, and see if the gauge shows values.

  • Does This Chart Mean The Euro Is Doomed Until 2015?

For fans of waves and long-term historical repetitions, we present a reader’s long-term Euro observations. Have at it:

Since Nixon abandoned the Gold Standard in Aug 1971 (TSY SCY Connally to the French: “ The dollar is our currency but it is your problem”), the Euro (synthetic reconstruction prior to 2001, courtesy of www.netdania.com) has turned with quite some regularity, on avg about every 89 month (7.4 years). In fact the last leg that started with a low in 9/2000 would be due in Feb. 08, which also happened to be the highest monthly close.  So by that rule it comes to no surprise that we turned about 2 years ago due to technical timing aspects. Only 15% later did Greece get backed in as a “fundamental” catalyst.

What will happen from here? If history holds, and I think it will, the Euro should continue its slide into the summer of 2015 or thereabouts.

Our quantitative model suggests that we most likely would touch on par sometime towards the end of the cycle. Nevertheless, we will have the usual corrections on the way.

It is likely, that in turn would not bode well for Gold and the drop could  possibly further magnified by high US interest rate SPREADS over the ECB rates, but that is just conjecture.

In the very near term, we still have a +10% potential (1.51) if we don’t take out the 1.35/1.36 area.

We note it’s a little hard to see the chart, so we’ll annotate:

    • The “synthetic Euro” hits a high in 1978.
    • Then the euro hit a low in 1985 coinciding with the Plaza Accord (more here)
    • In then rallied until 1992 when Soros attacked the UK.
    • It bottomed in 2001 at the beginning of the Bush era
    • It then peaked right before the financial crisis of 2008
    • Next… a bottom a 2015?

  • Winter storm watch issued

CHICAGO (STMW)  — As much as 10 inches of snow could fall in parts of the Chicago area through Monday, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter storm watch for the Chicago area this weekend.

The area covered by the watch includes Cook, DuPage, Lake, McHenry, and Kane counties.

The winter storm watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday evening, according to the weather service.

The snow should develop across northern Illinois by Sunday evening, according to the weather service. South of I-80 will see a mix of rain and snow or just rain, but north of I-80, should see snow accumulating to more than 6 inches by Monday morning, with further accumulations throughout the day, according to the weather service. Snow should begin to diminish from the west Monday evening, the weather service said.

Snowfall totals will likely reach 6 inches within 12 hours and continue to 10 inches or more through the day Monday, according to the weather service.

The heaviest amounts will probably accumulate from western Lee County northeast to McHenry County with some lake-supplied moisture feeding lakeshore locations in Lake and Cook County with an extra inch or two.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

Hazards resulting from this storm could include greatly reduced visibility and slippery, snow-covered roads. Travel conditions may deteriorate rapidly Sunday night, with most roads becoming snow-covered by midnight, the weather service said.

  • 80% Of Today’s Delinquent Homeowners Will Lose Their Houses — 6 Million In All

    sinkinghouse.jpg

John Burns Real Estate Consulting released a much-cited study this week arguing that the country has a “shadow inventory” of 5 million houses that will hit the market over the next few years.

Another startling assumption here: 80% of homeowners who are currently delinquent on their mortgages will end up losing their houses.  Mortgage mods, meanwhile, will just delay the inevitable.

(From the perspective of the homeowners, it’s probably best to get the inevitable out of the way sooner rather than later, before throwing more money down the negative-equity rat hole.)

Below, John Collins of the O.C. Register interviews an author of the study, Wayne Yamano of John Burns Consulting:

Us: Your study says that five million of the 7.7 million delinquent homes will go through foreclosure or a “foreclosure-related procedure.” How is this likely to occur?

Wayne: Most shadow inventory will get out onto the market as an REO or short sale.  In any event, it results in the homeowner losing their home, and that home being added to the supply of homes available for sale.

Us: Do the remaining 2.7 million borrowers get their loan payments caught up?

Wayne: Of the 7.7 million delinquent homeowners, we actually think that only about 1.6 million will be able avoid losing their homes, and that the remaining 6.1 million will lose their homes.  We say that there is 5 million units of shadow inventory because we estimate that about 1.1 million delinquent homeowners already have their homes listed for sale, and we would not classify those homes as “shadow.”

Us: When will this wave of foreclosures hit, and how will this shadow inventory affect home prices?

Wayne: We don’t believe that the shadow inventory will be dumped onto the market all at once.  Although we don’t believe modification efforts will truly save a lot of homeowners from losing their homes, we do believe that these programs are effective in delaying foreclosures and pushing out the additional supply to later years.

In terms of pricing, as long as the economic recovery continues and mortgage rates remain low, we do NOT expect another leg down in pricing, despite the looming shadow inventory problem.  However, if the economy takes another dip and mortgage rates spike, we’re certain to see another decline in prices.

The next über-model from Audi’s Quattro GmbH division won’t officially debut in Geneva for another week, but images from its brochure have already made their way onto the web. The Audi RS5 coupe will no doubt take the performance of Audi’s B8 platform to levels beyond the much-loved and departed RS4. What we don’t know at this point is how high that level will go, and what the motive power will be.

It’s probably safe to assume it’ll fall somewhere between the 420 horsepower of the Audi RS4 and the 571 hp of the current Audi RS6. Since the V10 used the R8 and RS6 isn’t really in keeping with Audi’s current engine-downsizing philosophy (not to mention that the 10-cylinder probably wouldn’t fir into the smaller A5’s engine bay), perhaps we’ll a turbo or supercharged version of the 4.2-liter V8 in the current S5, or a maybe even a more severely amplified version of the 3.0-liter TFSI V6 from the S4. Either way, we can’t wait to get our hands on the RS5. A tip of the hat to Liam!
