WILMETTE, Ill. (STMW)  — Two Chicago men have been charged after allegedly driving a vehicle into a north suburban home.

The vehicle drove into a home in the 2200 block of Beechwood in Wilmette at about 1 a.m. Thursday, according to a press release issued from Wilmette Police. The house sustained substantial damage.

The driver of the vehicle, Carlos Almanza, 28, of 4347 W. Shakespeare Ave. in Chicago was charged with DUI and possession of marijuana. He was also cited for not wearing a seat belt and driving without a valid driver’s license and insurance, the release said.

The passenger, Tony Brito, also 28, of 1408 N. Harding Ave. in Chicago, was charged with possession of marijuana, the release said.

Both men suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Evanston Hospital. They have since been released from the hospital, the release said.

The family in the home was not injured, the release said.

The two are set for a preliminary hearing on March 9 at 9 a.m. at the Skokie Courthouse.

  • Pilot Intentionally Crashes Plane Into IRS, CIA, And FBI Complex In Austin, TX

    crash plane austin

    Update 5:
The IRS gave us this statement: "We can confirm that a small plane hit a building in Austin, Texas that includes IRS offices. This is the Echelon 1 Building, which houses about 190 IRS employees. We are still in the process of accounting for all of our employees. We will be providing updates as more information becomes available."

Update 4: This appears to be Stack's manifesto.

Update 3: The Pilot has been identified as software engineer Joseph Andrew Stack.

Update 2: Now CNN is reporting that the crash was intentional, citing an official.

Update: Fox News is reporting that the pilot actually set is house on fire in Waco before taking off to Texas.

Original post: Here's the latest on the Austin Texas plane crash. The fear is that this may have been intentional:

    From the Austin-American Statesman:

According to an FBI agent who asked not to be identified because he isn’t authorized to release information, the incident is being investigated as an accident, although eyewitnesses said the plane seemed to come in at full throttle. He said the plane was out of Waco and that Federal Aviation Administration officials are en route to the scene.

The agent said it was believed the plane had come from Waco, and that witnesses said it had hit the building at full-throttle.

FBI sources said that the eyewitness accounts saying that the plane did not slow down is making some authorities wonder if it was an intentional act.

FBI spokesman Bill Carter said the building hit by a plane at the Echelon office complex did not contain an FBI office. While the FBI has an office at the complex, the plane did not crash into that particular building, Carter said.

William Winnie, an Internal Revenue Service agent, said he was in a training session on the third floor of the building when he saw a light-colored, single engine plane coming at the building.

The Time I Drove Off a Tow Truck

I was at a billiards hall drinking beer and shooting pool on a Friday night after a Man Show taping. It was a Man Show tradition. After every tape night we would go to a big pool hall and drink pitchers of beer until the production assistants got drunk enough to tell you what they really thought of you.

I was in the middle of a conversation with a P.A. about how Jimmy was the funny one when somebody ran up the stairs and yelled, “They’re towing your car.” I, along with a couple of people, ran down the stairs and across the street to find my car hooked up to a tow truck that was ready to drive away.

I’ll bore you with a few quick details first because it’s important to the story. One, the car was a brand new silver BMW M3, E36 body style, and two, the tow truck was one of those modern style ones with two prongs that slid under your back tires and lifted the whole rear end of the car off the ground.

I ran up to the gentleman and said, “This is my car, how can we take care of this?” He said, “You can follow me to the impound lot.” I said, “How about we just take care of this right now? I’ll pay you and we can both go our separate ways.” He said, “That’s not going to work,” and began to drive away.

  • House panel asks Toyota president to testify

WASHINGTON — A U.S. congressional committee has asked Toyota president Akio Toyoda to testify at its hearing next week on the automaker’s recalls.

Toyoda is the grandson of the Japanese automaker’s founder. He has said he was not planning to attend the hearings but would consider appearing before Congress if invited.

The Toyota executive has faced calls by some lawmakers to testify about safety problems connected to the recall of 8.5 million vehicles globally. His appearance before Congress would raise the profile of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Hearing, scheduled for Wednesday.

Toyoda has said he was planning to travel to the U.S. soon to meet with company workers and dealers.

  • Breathing problems claim life of bird burned in Sugar Grove plane crash

Phoenix, the badly burned red-tailed hawk rescued from a plane crash site in Sugar Grove, has died.

The hawk has been euthanized by Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center after she developed problems breathing.

Phoenix was found Jan. 23 by Kane County sheriff’s deputies at the plane crash off Route 47 that claimed the lives of two Florida men.

Kane County Animal Control called Flint Creek.

Dawn Keller, founder and president of Flint Creek, suspected that the bird was asleep in a tree when the plane crashed, and was caught in a fireball witnesses reported.

Despite losing all her feathers, having skin burned off her feet, and burns to her eyelids, Phoenix made good progress, according to Keller.

“Phoenix was standing, eating solid food and was visual within two days of the crash. Barring complications, her prognosis for a full recovery and eventual release back to the wild was very good,” Keller said in a prepared statement.

But the fire burned her mouth and trachea, and Phoenix developed respiratory complications that failed to respond to treatment.

Flint Creek Wildlife sees thousands of birds and mammals at its treatment centers in Barrington, Chicago and Itasca. “We’ve had animals that have been unconscious for several days that have made a full recovery. These many examples of survival and incredible will to live give testament to the fact that animals can survive significant injuries. We just wish Phoenix had been one of them,” Keller said.

  • Small plane crashes into building in Austin, Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities say a small private plane has crashed into a seven-story office building in Austin, Texas, and two people from the building are missing.

Thick black and gray smoke was billowing out of the second and third stories of the building Thursday morning as fire crews using ladder trucks and hoses battled the fire.

Dozens of windows were blown out of the hulking black building and smoke poured from it as vehicles traveling on a nearby highway paused to look at the damage.

Dawn Clopton, a division chief with the Austin Fire Department, says two people from the building are unaccounted for. She says it was a small private plane that crashed. The building is located on a major highway in the city.

  • Wife of a former Palatine mayor dies after being hit by truck

The widow of former Palatine Village President Robert J. Guss Jr. died early Thursday morning after being hit by a truck while trying to cross Northwest Highway.

Aida Guss, 72, of Palatine, was walking southbound across Northwest Highway at the Benton Street intersection when she was struck by a red pickup truck heading east just after 6 a.m., said Cmdr. Craig Lesselyoung of the Palatine Police Department.

Lesselyoung said it’s unclear at this time who was at fault when the accident happened.

Aida Guss was married for 49 years to former Palatine Mayor Robert Guss, who died of natural causes in October 2007 at the age of 72.

Aida and Robert Guss had eight children and at the time of Robert’s death, 25 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Robert Guss was a Palatine councilman from 1973 to 1977 and served as village president from 1977 to 1985. He is credited with leading the effort to bring Lake Michigan water to Palatine as well as establishing today’s full-time fire department.

The couple also owned Village Cobbler Shoe Store on Northwest Highway in Palatine, which they closed in 1997, as well as a second location at the Ice House Mall in Barrington.

Lesselyoung said because the driver of the pickup has not been cited, his name is being withheld by police.

Lesselyoung said Aida Guss was taken from the scene to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where she was pronounced dead.

Police shut down both eastbound lanes of Northwest Highway for about two hours while the accident was investigated. Lesselyoung said the lanes were reopened after 8:30 a.m.

  • Ex-NYC police boss gets 4 years in prison for lying to White House

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who was hailed as a hero alongside former Mayor Rudy Giuliani after the Sept. 11 terror attacks and nearly became chief of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was sentenced to four years behind bars Thursday for eight felonies.

Kerik admitted in November that he lied to the White House, filed false taxes and committed other crimes.

“The fact that Mr. Kerik would use that event (9/11) for personal gain and aggrandizement is a dark place in the soul for me,” said federal Judge Stephen Robinson.

An apologetic Kerik said before the sentence was pronounced: “Allow me to return to my wife and two little girls as soon as possible.”

Federal guidelines indicated Kerik’s sentence should be between 27 and 33 months in prison. Robinson said he went beyond the guidelines because they could not account for certain factors.

Kerik was “the chief law enforcement law enforcement officer for the biggest and grandest city this nation has,” Robinson said. The crimes were committed “in the process of attempting to become a cabinet level position in the government of the United States.”

Kerik, 54, has already been ordered to pay $188,000 in restitution and to pay past-due taxes and penalties on six years of tax returns.

Just before pleading guilty, Kerik spent three weeks in the Westchester County Jail for releasing secret pretrial information. While there, he was voluntarily admitted to the psychiatric ward for observation because of stress. Doctors concluded he did not need mental care.

After admitting his crimes, Kerik was freed pending sentencing. He had to post a $1.5 million bond, wear an electronic monitor and generally stay inside his home in Franklin Lakes, N.J.

In presentencing memos to the judge, the defense and prosecution painted sharply different portraits of Kerik.

The defense spoke of his bleak upbringing, his steely leadership after the terror attacks, his remorse and the debt he has incurred to defend himself. It supplied letters of support from his son, fellow police officers, a priest and a man who lost two sons on Sept. 11.

There was no letter from Giuliani.

The prosecution memo said Kerik had “shamelessly exploited” the terror attack, had shamed his gold shield and might flee if he weren’t sent to prison right away.

Kerik was Giuliani’s police commissioner when New York City was attacked, and he was praised worldwide for his leadership. At Giuliani’s urging, he was nominated to the top Homeland Security post in 2004. It was the peak of his fast-rising career — as corruption allegations began to mount.

Kerik said in court that while being vetted for that position, he falsely denied that he had any financial dealings with anyone doing business with New York City. He said he also lied when he claimed he had specifically refused payments that were offered.

In truth, he said, he had accepted renovations of his Bronx apartment from a company seeking city work.

Those apartment renovations were the focus of the original corruption charge, which alleged that Kerik accepted the renovations in exchange for vouching for the company. Kerik did not admit that.

  • Congress invites Toyota CEO to testify at hearing, sets RSVP deadline for tomorrow

During his third press conference last week, Toyota’s CEO Akio Toyoda said that he will not appear before U.S. lawmakers at hearings scheduled for later this month. Toyoda said he wasn’t planning on attending but would consider appearing before Congress if he was invited.

Well, a congressional committee sent out an invitation to Toyoda today to testify at its hearing next week on the automaker’s recalls, which now total 8.5 million vehicles globally. Toyoda has been asked to respond to the invitation by 5 p.m. ET on Friday.

Toyoda said last week that the company’s U.S. executive Yoshi Inaba, who heads up Toyota Motor Corp.’s U.S. unit, was more familiar with the recalls and was the best man to be at the hearing.

Toyoda previously said that he plans on making a trip to the U.S. to meet with company workers and dealers.

  • Walmart Using Hydrogen Fuel Cell Forklifts in Western Canada

With the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics in full swing and hydrogen fuel cell buses and Chevy Equinox FCVs carrying people to and fro plus the British Columbia Hydrogen Highway system in full use, there has been another development for Western Canada.

In October 2007, I had talked about how the world’s largest retailer, Walmart was demoing some hydrogen fuel cell forklifts and palette trucks at their Ohio facilities. Now, in Balzac, Alberta, just outside Calgary, Walmart has decided to spend $115 million to build a green and sustainable refrigerated distribution center.

By using wind, solar and hydrogen power the facility will be 60-percent more energy efficient than other comparable facilities. Hydrogen fuel cells will replace lead-acid batteries on forklifts and palette trucks, which mean longer operational times, quick refueling and no hassle in recharging or swapping out batteries.

The new green facility will provide 800 new construction jobs for the area and 600 additional jobs for employees once the facility has been built. Walmart was so impressed with the hydrogen forklift demo back in 2007, they are now integrating them into their green sustainability plans going forward. Leave it to Walmart to know a good value when they see it.

  • Australian Copyright Agency Paid Itself More Than It Distributed To Content Creators

One of the key problems we have with any sort of collection agency/performance rights organization/collective licensing scheme is that they introduce an unnecessary bureaucracy into the equation and, as a result, money gets redirected from the actual creators to the bureaucracy itself. It’s a giant economic inefficiency that harms content creators. Case in point: Michael Geist points us to the news that the Australian copyright collection group, The Copyright Agency Limited, spent more on its own staff than it gave out directly to content creators. In 2009, it paid its staff $9.4 million, and it disbursed… $9.1 million directly to content creators.

Now, to be fair, the article buries the fact that CAL also gave $76 million to publishers “on the assumption that a proportion of this money will be returned to authors,” but it also notes that it has no checks to see if that money is ever distributed. In other words, CAL doesn’t actually do anything concerning that $76 million other than pass it on to other bureaucracies (not content creators) — who might just be keeping it, rather than disbursing it. As the report notes, CAL collected $114 million last year, and can only say, for certain, that $9.1 million got distributed to actual content creators. Now that’s efficient! Certainly, some of that $76 million may have reached content creators, but no one knows for sure.

So, again, we’re left wondering why such a setup makes sense at all? All that’s happening is that money that could go directly from fans/consumers to content creators gets filtered through inefficient bureaucracies that take huge cuts. That harms content creators.

Acura Cold Weather Testing – Click above for high-res image gallery

    “Don’t hold back.”

Three words I’ve never heard before at a press event and three words that are running through my mind as I tramp down on the throttle and wheelspin my way towards the gray horizon.

    Don’t hold back.

Ahead of me lies a three-quarter-mile stretch of perfectly groomed snow sitting atop a thick layer of ice, with over 300 feet of desolation on either side.

    Don’t hold back.

From a standing start, the well-worn BMW X6 grapples with a lack of traction and then finally grips through the slush to propel me past 20… 30… 40… 50 mph. Then I slam on the stoppers. The ABS system pulses through the brake pedal and the coupe-shaped ‘ute grinds to a squeaky, squawky halt. Let’s try that again.

    Don’t hold back.

This time I get up to 60 mph, lay on the brakes and it’s the same result. Now I’m bored, so it’s time to experiment with a few emergency lane change maneuvers. I get up to 30 mph, stab at the brake, yank the wheel to the right, then back to the left and straighten up. Nothing. No drama. No hesitation. No tail wagging. I do it again, this time at 40 mph with the traction control off. Same result. Then 50 mph. Same result. Then 60 mph. And then I promptly stuff myself into an six-foot-tall snow bank.

    Didn’t hold back.

Follow the jump to read about our experience at Acura’s cold weather testing facility in Minnesota.
