  • FEIN Metal core drilling unit with digitally controlled drill feed

FEIN presents two new core drilling units for efficient and precise core drilling with a diameter of up to 80 millimetres: the FEIN KBM 80 U with manual drive and the FEIN KBM 80 auto with the first fully automatic, digitally controlled drill feed. These units guarantee constant drilling times and save time and money on big drilling jobs. They also deliver increased work safety as operators don’t have to manually intervene in the drilling process. The new FEIN core drilling units cover all applications such as core drilling, twist drilling, thread cutting, countersinking and reaming and are used in metal and steel construction as well as the construction of bridges, machines, ships and containers.

    Cost-effective and precise core drilling
Compared with twist drilling, core drilling reduces working times by up to 40 percent and is therefore an extremely cost-effective drilling method. For more than 25 years, FEIN has been working in close collaboration with users to continually refine its core drilling units which are now renowned for their precision and reliability. All components – the drill motor, gearbox, drill jig and electronics –, are manufactured to a very high level of quality by FEIN in Schwäbisch Gmünd-Bargau, Germany and are perfectly coordinated to one another. Special technical construction features, such as the drill motor housing in its sturdy barrel design, the gearbox housing and die-cast aluminium drill jig, alongside high-quality materials and modern production procedures guarantee a long service life for FEIN core drilling units, even when used continuously in industry and manual trades.

Core drilling unit with automatic drill feed
The FEIN KBM 80 auto is the first core drilling unit with fully automatic, digitally controlled drill feed. A zero-maintenance and reliable stepping motor operates at a constant feed force. Depending on material, core drilling diameter and work step, the intelligent electronics automatically control the drill motor speed and feed speed. This enables effective and constant work progress and also ensures low bit wear. The automatic drill feed starts when the handwheel is released. Once the material has been broken through, the rapid return action is automatically activated, the drill motor retracts from the drill hole and the tool automatically cuts out.

  • Precise Current and Voltage Measurement via USB or Ethernet

Meilhaus Electronic presents their latest development in measurement and control modules – the ME-7 also known as the ME-Axon. Depending on the model the device is connected to a USB 2.0 or a 10/100Base-T Ethernet/LAN interface of a PC. With its rugged metal housing it can be used as table-top device or integrated into a 19” rack. The ME-Axon’s main feature is the ability to measure currents at 7 different measurement ranges from 250 µA up to a maximum of 50A without interruptions when switching between the ranges. The additional analogue inputs of the module have a rating of up to ±10 V. Signal conditioning modules can be connected to acquire data from thermocouples. RTDs, bridges, differential currents or voltages. The max. A/D- conversion rate is 500 kHz with a resolution of 16 bit. For control applications the device has digital TTL I/O channels, 4 analog outputs with a voltage output of ±10 V (also at 500 kHz) and 3 counters.

An ME-4670 I/O measurement card is at the heart of the system. Therefore the ME-Axon is also supported under the ME-iDS software driver platform for Windows and Linux. On this basis the developer can choose amongst many different software environments to design his individual application. Standard programming languages such as C/C++/C#, VisualBasic, Delphi or Python are supported in addition to LabVIEW or Agilent VEE Pro. The driver has also been integrated into specialized software packages by various Meilhaus Electronic’s software cooperation partners. With the TestManager CE by MCD Elektronik (www.mcd-elektronik.de) even complex test routines can be programmed without having to program in a cryptic programming language. The module can also be integrated into real-time development environments via SCALE-RT by COSATEQ (www.cosateq.de) or used as sophisticated data acquisition unit with TurboLab (www.turbolab.de).

The ME-Axon is the fusion of 3 individual Meilhaus Electronic products: The ME-4670 multi-I/O board, the USB- or LAN-bridge ME-Synapse, as well as the ME-SIG32 as signal conditioning unit. Therefore the ME-Axon can be easily and quickly adapted to meet customer specific requirements

  • High productivity deep hole drilling

To complement their CDX-DH range of solid carbide deep hole drills, Dormer has introduced a new programme of high performance cobalt alloyed high-speed steel (HSCo) drills for applications up to 15 x diameter.

    A variety of lengths – from stub to extra length – are available, covering drilling operations in most engineering materials from 3xD (A920, A921), 6xD (A900, A901), 10xD (A940, A941) and 15xD (A976, A977, A978).

All drills feature a parabolic flute design with quick helix for increased chip space and improved swarf breaking and removal capabilities, allowing greater hole depths to be achieved without the need for pecking.

A thick web design increases the structural strength of the drill. This results in greater rigidity and, in turn, minimises the risk of drill breakage.

In addition, the special point geometry promotes excellent centering – eliminating the requirement for a pilot hole – and reduces both thrust force and power requirements.

“The combination of these unique elements”, explains David Goulbourne, Dormer’s development manager for drilling products, “results in a continuous production process at higher speeds and feeds while also promoting consistent hole size and quality.”

Available in bright finish across the full range, a Smooth-Flow coating option is available on specific lengths. This additional surface treatment reduces the coefficient of friction, increases wear resistance and, in combination with the parabolic flute, eliminates chip packing at greater depths.

The product launch is supported by a comprehensive brochure that includes full range details, dimensional data and optimum operating conditions.

Further information is available by contacting your local Dormer office or by visiting the website www.dormertools.com

  • New generation of drills from FEIN

FEIN, the manufacturer of extremely reliable power tools, presents three new BOP series drills. The high-quality mains-powered drills are suited to drilling, countersinking and thread cutting and were developed to machine metal, wood, plastic and composite materials. They can be used in metal, machine and steel construction, interior construction or vehicle repairs.

The quality you’d expect from an inventor
FEIN invented the world’s first electric hand drill in 1895. The long-standing German company has now been developing drills and power tools to be used in industry and manual trades for various specific target groups for 115 years. All FEIN products are produced in Schwäbisch Gmünd-Bargau, where modern production facilities, qualified staff and the use of high-quality materials guarantee precision and quality of workmanship. FEIN is one of the few manufacturers that produce their drills with a barrel design. The four components – the drill chuck, transmission, drill motor/motor housing and handle – are positioned in a linear axis and are therefore extremely stable and mechanically protected against twisting. A key feature of the barrel design is a fibreglass-reinforced motor housing, which offers complete shielding of the field coil and armature. In addition, the metal transmission head ensures that the ball bearings are positioned securely, resulting in high concentricity. Components that are subjected to high loads like the drill shaft, armature shaft and bearings are quiet and vibration-free. This ensures a long service life, even at high shock loads or in continuous use.

    Providing maximum power with precision
Tools have to be extremely powerful to drill in rigid materials and to stand up to continuous use or shift operation. Compared with the competition, FEIN high-power motors have a higher iron and copper content, ensuring a better power flow and very high torque. The 500 watt motor is very powerful across the entire speed range. A precisely manufactured drill shaft and the high-quality metal quick clamping drill chuck guarantee high concentricity. A chucking force safety device for the drill chuck and self-tightening clamping jaws prevent the drill from slipping under load, allowing for efficient drilling and safe working.

  • Universal Soldier: Lola presents adaptable IndyCar proposal

Lola B12 IRL design proposals – Click above for high-res image gallery

It ain’t over ’till the fat lady sings. Or so the saying goes, but while the British motorsport engineering firm may specialize in lightweight composites, make no mistake about it: In the global racing arena, Lola Cars is a heavyweight.

In addition to sports prototypes, Formula One racers and a variety of other racing machinery, Lola’s history in Indy cars goes back all the way to the 1960s. Along the way, Lola has provided motivation to such notables as Graham Hill, Al Unser, Newman/Hass, Penske and Chip Ganassi, to name just a few. Now, following the competing designs unveiled by Ganassi-led upstart DeltaWing and arch-rival Dallara, Lola has announced its own bid for the new IRL chassis.

Less of a radical change certainly than the DeltaWing concept, Lola’s proposal has focused on two key areas: aerodynamic stability and design adaptability. Instead of one design, the Lola package includes two alternatives, allowing teams to choose and thus imbuing the field with more variety than existing one-make series, IndyCar included. Both designs, however, have been optimized to reduce turbulence in their wake, allowing for closer following, drafting and passing – key factors in increasing the level of competition, particularly on high-speed super-speedways.

The most intriguing element of the Lola design, however, is its adaptability. The concept is designed for use – with minimal modification – in both the top-tier IndyCar series and the lower Indy Lights category, allowing junior teams to graduate to the senior series with a few simple changes. Further details are at your disposal in the press release after the jump, with high-res images in the gallery below.

  • IMF Announces Gold Liquidation, Sending Bulls Hiding In The Corner

The International Monetary Fund will sell off 191.3 metric tons of gold it has lying around in “phases” so that it won’t disrupt markets. Too bad no matter what the IMF says, the move will no doubt drive the price of gold lower.

    Dow Jones (via Zerohedge):

The IMF noted that central banks in Europe have said they can accommodate the fund’s gold as part of their scheduled sales in the Central Bank Gold Agreement.

The IMF board approved sales of 403.3 metric tons of gold in September to create a more stable income model and boost support for low-income countries.  About 212 metric tons have already been sold off-market to central banks of India, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

The IMF didn’t rule out further off-market sales, which would reduce the amount sold to the market.
