  • NET SAFETY MONITORING RELEASES HART PROTOCOL FOR ENTIRE LINE OF FLAME DETECTORS

The HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) Protocol is the global standard for sending and receiving digital information across a 4-20 mA analog signal between smart devices and a control/monitoring system. It is a field-proven, bi-directional communication protocol carried over the same wiring that is typically used for conventional analog instruments, with no disruption of the integrity of the 4-20mA signal and no rewiring required. Data is quickly and easily communicated between our intelligent flame detectors and practically any compatible host system. A host can be any software application, from a technician’s hand-held device or laptop to a plant’s process control, asset management, or safety system platform.

In addition to the inherent instrument alarm function, the HART protocol permits remote access to the configuration, diagnostics, as well as maintenance and alarm records of any networked Net Safety flame detector. Field operators can accurately assess device conditions and prepare for routines before traveling into the field. One of the unique features of the Net Safety HART solution is an easily accessible separated input option. Most flame detectors installed in the field are mounted close to ceilings in order to effectively monitor hazardous areas. Our separated input option gives field-operators a direct, ground-level input to Net Safety flame detectors using any remote HART host device, such as a hand-held communicator or laptop.

Net Safety Monitoring Inc. is a global leader in the design, development, and manufacture of fixed toxic and combustible gas detectors, flame detectors, safety systems, and ancillary safety and security products. • Air Classifier for Protein Shift

Superfine® Air Classifiers have been used for decades to shift the protein value of wheat flour. Sturtevant Simpactor® pin mills or Powderizer® air classifying mills can be teamed with a Superfine® Air Classifier to obtain fractions precisely selected for particle size, starch protein level, viscosity, or absorption.
Sturtevant flour refining systems offer full operating flexibility and high capacities. With this system, precise separations are easily achieved for protein shifts, primary classifications, coarse and fine separation for new end products; in one operation and no matter what the wheat source. Supplemental recycling and blending make individual specifications. A similar process can also be used for other grains including peas, corn, soy, barley and oat.
Application: Wheat, peas, corn, soy, barley and oat protein fractionation, modified and specialty flours.
    The Method of Operation
Material to be classified is fed through a top-mounted inlet and falls directly to a distributing plate which spins the material laterally, forming an “umbrella” of thinly spread particles. Carefully controlled ascending air currents carry “fines” upward to the final selection zone. Here rejecter blades emit centrifugal force which acts to preclude oversize particles entering the “fines” chamber. Oversize low protein flour drops out of the tailings cones while high protein flour “fines” are exhausted to a cyclone or bag collector.
    Function
The air classifier has two distinct functions: first, it may be employed to select fine particles as the desired product; second, it can de-dust a coarse product. In either case, the product selected can be varied by external control of the air velocity.
    Use
By its ability to “cut out” a fines fraction from the carefully selected patent flour stream, the air classifier provides the means to alter the protein percentage in the end products. The miller can also use the protein rich “fines” to enhance other streams.
The net effect is to allow the soft wheat miller to use the wheat grown in the immediate area to produce flour for the miller’s special needs.
For the hard wheat miller, the air classifier offers the opportunity to divide-off a high protein fraction. This must in turn be reground and classified to finally produce a high protein, clear fraction and a specialty low protein, “sweet goods” fraction.

  • Editorial: The red-hot scam begins to unravel by Wesley Pruden, Washington Times

You can fool some of the people some of the time, as Abraham Lincoln observed, and you even can fool all the people some of the time. But you can’t fool all the people all the time. Al Gore and his friends got so excited about points one and especially point two that they forgot point three.

Not everybody is on to the global-warming scam, not yet, but all the people — or enough of them — are getting there. “Global warming,” or even “climate change” as Al’s marketing men now insist that it be called, is becoming the stuff of jests and jokes. Sen. James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, a Republican, built an igloo of that hot stuff that buried Washington last week on the Capitol lawn and dubbed it “Al Gore’s new home.”

Across the Potomac, the Republicans in Virginia filmed a television commercial called “12 inches of global warming” and invited two Virginia congressmen, both Democrats who voted for the infamous cap-and-trade legislation, to help with the shovel that will become the official state tool before the streets thaw.

One day this week, there was measurable snow on the ground in 50 states. (No report yet from the other seven of the “57 states” President Obama once said he was campaigning to be the president of.) Even Hawaii reported snow on some of its mountain peaks, and several towns in northwestern Florida were lightly dusted, like the powdered sugar on a cop’s doughnut.

  • Donald Trump: Climate campaigner Al Gore ‘should be stripped of Nobel Peace Prize after record snow storms’

    Article Tags: Donald Trump

Donald Trump has called for Al Gore to be stripped of the Nobel Peace prize he was awarded for campaigning on climate change.

The billionaire tycoon said record-breaking snow storms proved that the former US Vice-President was wrong on global warming, and that policies aimed at tackling carbon emissions were harming America’s economy.

His comments follow a string of high-profile attacks on climate change advocates.

Scientists have been forced to defend themselves after embarrassing admissions that some of their evidence was faulty.

Gore has become one of the world’s leading global warming activists since his documentary An Inconvenient Truth became a surprise hit in 2006. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

But Trump, who hosts the US version of The Apprentice, said the Nobel Committee should now strip him of the award following one of the worst ever winters in eastern America.

He said in a speech: ‘With the coldest winter ever recorded, with snow setting record levels up and down the coast, the Nobel committee should take the Nobel Prize back from Al Gore.’

  • Science blogger finds errors in Met Office climate change records by Hannah Devlin, The Times

    Article Tags: World Temperatures

    article image

A science blogger has uncovered a catalogue of errors in Met Office records that form a central part of the scientific evidence for global warming.

The mistakes, which led to the data from a large number of weather stations being discarded or misused, had been overlooked by professional scientists and were only discovered when the Met Office’s Hadley Centre made data publicly available in December after the “climategate” e-mail row.

Although the errors do not alter the bigger picture on climate change, they have been seized upon as a further sign that scientific institutions have not been sufficiently transparent. “It makes you wonder how many other problems there are in the data,” said John Graham-Cumming, the programmer who spotted the mistakes. “The whole idea of doing science without releasing your data is quite worrying.”

Since being alerted of the problems last month the Met Office has issued a corrected version of its land-based temperature record on its website.

More trouble looms for the IPCC. The body may need to revise statements made in its Fourth Assessment Report on hurricanes and global warming. A statistical analysis of the raw data shows that the claims that global hurricane activity has increased cannot be supported.

Les Hatton once fixed weather models at the Met Office. Having studied Maths at Cambridge, he completed his PhD as metereologist: his PhD was the study of tornadoes and waterspouts. He’s a fellow of the Royal Meterological Society, currently teaches at the University of Kingston, and is well known in the software engineering community – his studies include critical systems analysis.

  • WiFi On The School Bus

WiFi has been showing up on airplanes and trains lately, and in Silicon Valley, it’s used on the special shuttle buses that companies like Google and Yahoo use to get employees to work. But what about for high schoolers? The NY Times recently had an article about a high school out in the far reaches of Arizona that has put WiFi on a school bus, and found that the impact is really quite amazing:

Wi-Fi access has transformed what was often a boisterous bus ride into a rolling study hall, and behavioral problems have virtually disappeared.

“It’s made a big difference,” said J. J. Johnson, the bus’s driver. “Boys aren’t hitting each other, girls are busy, and there’s not so much jumping around.”

What’s amusing here is the juxtaposition of this article with recent articles that fret about kids spending too much time online, with worries that they’re becoming addicted or wasting time that could be better spent. But, here the article is suggesting exactly the opposite: that not only is more internet access leading to a less rowdy bus ride, but it’s helping the students become better students.

  • Audi RS6 gets two new limited-edition trims in Europe

There is nothing we don’t like about the Audi RS6 and what is there not to like with a top speed of 188 mph, a neck-snapping 580-hp and a 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds. The only thing we really don’t like is the fact that the Audi RS6 is not offered in the United States.

If that didn’t have you feeling angered enough as is, Audi announced today that it is offering two new limited-edition equipment packages for the RS6.

The two limited edition packages, limited to 500 units, will add a Carbon design package for the engine compartment, 20-inch wheels with a 5-spoke design and a sports tuned suspension.

    Yes, we’re pretty jealous.

Hit the jump for the press release and the high-res image gallery.

    2009 Audi RS6 Sedan:

    Press Release:

Audi RS 6 – two new equipment packages

    – Limited to 500 units: RS 6 plus Sport and RS 6 plus Audi exclusive

Audi is offering two new limited-edition equipment packages for the RS 6 – restricted to just 500 units. With a top speed of 303 km/h (188.28 mph), a Carbon design package for the engine compartment, 20-inch wheels bearing a 5 segment-spoke design, and the sports suspension plus, each of these RS 6 models will be truly unique. In fact, each of them will be a one-of-a-kind thanks to a numbered badge in the interior. Customers can opt for one of two packages: RS 6 plus Sport or RS 6 plus Audi exclusive.

The Sport version features an instrument-panel hood and center console covered in leather; an RS 6 logo adorns the front floor mats. Concerning the Audi exclusive package, customers can also specify a custom paint job by choosing from the color range of quattro GmbH. In addition, the seat upholstery, controls, door trim inserts, front center armrest, and the armrests in the door trims are covered in leather of an attractive color from the Audi exclusive program. Seat add-on parts are adapted to match the color of leather in question.

Thanks to FSI direct gasoline injection, twin-turbo supercharging, and dry sump lubrication, the high-performance V10 delivers 426 kW (580 hp) and maximum torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 6,250 rpm. This sedan mirrors the performance of a high-performance sports car: from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.14 mph) in just 4.5 seconds and it exceeds the 200 km/h threshold (124.27 mph) after just 14.5 seconds. The sports suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) reduces pitch and roll by purely mechanical means. The driver can switch among the three operating modes of the MMI operating terminal’s shock-absorber control system: comfort, dynamic, and sport.

The RS 6 offers all the comfort of the A6 line of business models and is in the hands of quattro GmbH, a fully-owned subsidiary of AUDI AG. High-quality materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum, leather, and Alcantara create a cultivated and dynamic atmosphere in the interior. And intelligent assistance systems grant drivers yet more control. Audi lane assist warns the driver should the car inadvertently veer out of its lane.

Audi side assist alerts the driver to possible critical situations during lane changes. Audi adaptive cruise control maintains proper speed and following distance. In addition to three-dimensional road maps, the MMI navigation plus offers a DVD player for navigation/audio/video DVDs as well as a radio with dual tuner and a 40 GB hard disk drive which can store up to 3,000 musical tracks in addition to navigation data.

The RS 6 plus Sport and RS 6 plus Audi exclusive equipment packages are available now. The Sport version costs 3,250 euros; the Audi exclusive package 8,310 euros. This equates to savings of about 50 percent compared to purchasing the items individually.

  • Is The .mobi Madness Finally Over?

From back when it was first suggested six or so years ago, we were quite skeptical of the need for a “mobile only” top level domain called .mobi. It wasn’t difficult to predict that devices would get better and wireless data services would get better, such that there would be no need for a special separate mobile web — as everything could easily be delivered via the “regular” web. If anything, like many new TLDs, the whole thing just seemed like a cash grab, because companies would feel obligated to pay up to reserve their .mobi domain names before someone else did. And while .mobi tried to position its offering as something much more than a splinter scaled-down internet, most people pretty quickly realized that it served no reasonable purpose. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard much at all about .mobi in a couple years, and as more and more people moved onto phones that could handle full webpages — or, companies set up their own regular websites to automatically scale down for mobile browsers — the whole concept seemed to have faded away. MobHappy reports that .mobi has been sold off to the company that also owns the rights to the .info domain — so both can now live together in uselessness. But, best of all, as Carlo explains:

And in case you were wondering, my favorite .mobi site, flowers.mobi — you remember, the one that was purchased for $200,000 in 2006 and was supposed to be developed into a legit site with “relevant content” — is still just a parked domain with ads. And it’s still not compliant with .mobi’s rules for its sites. Big surprise there.

  • Trial opens for twice-convicted killer accused of third slaying

Sharon Weber gave birth to her second child weeks earlier when her husband was killed in a random robbery not far from their Aurora home.

Nearly 18 years later, Weber finally will face the man accused of shooting her husband in the back of the head before fleeing with his wallet and the $6 it held.

The widow’s testimony will open Tuesday the long-awaited trial of Edward L. Tenney, a twice-convicted killer serving life prison terms who faces a possible death sentence if convicted in DuPage County of a third slaying.

Jerry D. Weber, a 24-year-old carpet installer, was shot four times early April 17, 1992 in Aurora Township while out gathering flagstones for the couple’s new patio and walkway.

After her husband failed to return home, Sharon Weber loaded her 1-month-old baby and 2-year-old son into the car and set out to find him.

Not far from their home, she discovered her husband lying face up near his van in the muddy field of an abandoned grain silo. The couple’s sons, David and Erik, are now 19 and 17, respectively.

    Tenney, 50, maintains his innocence.

A hard-fought battle in DuPage Circuit Judge Daniel Guerin’s courtroom is anticipated.

Lawyers spent three weeks assembling the six man, six woman jury, and four alternates.

Tenney is serving two life prison terms for the infamous 1993 slaying of dairy heiress Mary Jill Oberweis, and her elderly neighbor, Virginia Johannessen, who lived one-quarter mile away near Aurora.

The women were killed months apart in separate robberies.

Four other men were wrongly accused in Kane County of the Johannessen slaying. Three were acquitted.

One man from Bellwood was sentenced to a 60-year prison term, but he was set free in 1995 after Tenney and his cousin, Donald Lippert, were indicted.

Lippert, 34, formerly of Woodridge, has been serving a lengthy term since 1996 after he plead guilty to being Tenney’s teenage accomplice in all three murders and agreed to provide truthful testimony against him.

The defense team argues Lippert – eligible for parole in September 2035 at age 60 – was the actual shooter. But prosecutors said Tenney was linked to the murder weapon.

His criminal history also includes armed robberies, burglaries, attempted prison escapes and weapon violations in Illinois and Florida.

Tenney once faced death by lethal injection for the Johannessen murder. His conviction, though, was overturned in 2002 based on a legal trial error.

He was retried, convicted again and, in 2008, sentenced to a life prison term – clearing the way for the start Tuesday of DuPage County’s trial.

  • Island Lake police chief on leave; reason unclear

ISLAND LAKE — The police chief in Island Lake is on paid administrative leave.

Chief Anthony Sciarrone had been leading the 14-officer department for almost a year.

Mayor Debbie Herrmann notified village board members in an e-mail Monday morning that she put Sciarrone on leave Friday, but did not indicate why.

“The board was not aware until this morning,” Island Lake board member Connie Mascillino said.

Mascillino said the situation was unusual and said she hopes the entire board will have a chance to address the matter.

“We’ve never had any thing like this happen before,” she said.

As mayor, Herrmann has the authority to remove the chief from duty, said village attorney Scott Puma. He declined to comment on the reasons for Sciarrone’s leave because it was a personnel matter.

Board member Don Verciglio said he also was unaware of the reasons for Sciarrone’s leave. He said the village mayor appoints the police chief.

Sciarrone, who is paid $85,738 a year plus benefits, remains on the payroll, said Finance Director John Little.

Detective Matt du Chemin has been put in charge of the day-to-day operations of the department, Little said. Du Chemin could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

This is not the first time Herrmann has wielded her authority over the department.

On Jan. 1, she placed a part-time police officer on administrative leave. That officer has not been paid or returned to work, Little said.

The Island Lake police department has not been insulated from the village board’s political machinations in the past, either.

Former Police Chief John Fellmann, a 31-year veteran of the Arlington Heights Police Department who wanted to finish out his career in Island Lake, resigned after disagreements with the board.

Earlier this year, a stalemate on the board nearly led to the village not being able to pay its monthly bills. However, that situation has since been resolved and the bills paid, Little said.
