  • Matech GT1 previewed before March debut (w/ Video)

The beloved Ford GT of many supercar lovers has been turned into a race car. Known as the 2010 Matech GT1, the vehicle is based on the prototype that Matech Competition ran in 2009, but everything this time around is brand-new.

“The car is completely new. Not a single element, be it the engine, the transmission system, the suspension or aerodynamics are the same as those of the Ford GT1 from 2009, said test-driver Thomas Mutsch. “The roll-out was very promising, and we are confident with regard the forthcoming season.”

Performance details are still limited but Matech says it will work to further continue testing up until the presentation of the car to the press in Paris on March 1.

As for right now, there are still 61 days and 4 hours until the car makes its official world debut.

Check out a video of the Matech GT1 in action.

  • All the wrong reasons for Stack Overflow’s VC chase

Joel has decided to chase venture capital for StackOverflow, but I can’t exactly figure out why. He lists six benefits that just don’t compute under even light scrutiny:

    1. The Answers market is in a land grab mode
Unlike eBay, where there’s a general market for goods and you get huge network effects from having a critical mass of buyers and sellers, StackOverflow is all about niches. People who are searching for “how to make sql server not go slow?” aren’t likely to bleed over to “how to make swedish meatballs?”.

This means that you’ll have to fight for every niche. Similar to how general forums would have to fight for every niche. Just because you have a forum site that’s big for gamers, you won’t have much of an edge attracting foodies.

Finally, it’s not like this is a new idea with no other entrants. Look at Yahoo Answers for a site that’s still up with a similar model and look at Google Answers for another that couldn’t be turned into a worthwhile business and closed.

    2. Stack Overflow is like Starbucks
It really isn’t. Starbucks can use capital efficiently because they have big capital expenditures securing land, building out stores, and purchasing coffee machines. Where’s the capital intensity part of starting another answers site? Adding another server? Coming up with a new design?

It doesn’t seem like Stack Overflow can efficiently use big money for anything but advertising itself. Which is kinda funny when the whole business is about getting page views to sell for ad crumbs. It also rings very much like dot-com. Remember when all you had to do was get eyeballs? Oh, it’s free? Who cares, let’s make it up on volume!

    3. Stack Overflow wants to get on Techcrunch
If you’re listing the publicity of “Stack Overflow raises $10M in Series A by Fancy Schmancy VC” as the 3rd pro for taking money, you’re bound to be in trouble. The Techcrunch post you’re going to get from this is going to scroll off the front page in 4 hours and nobody who’s actually going to use your service is going to care.

Do you think people looking for an answer to “how do I get the three gold rings in zelda?” is going to give a hoot who’s money you’re burning to provide that forum? Or even that the advertisers you’re hoping to attract is going to look at anything else than CPM and demographics for a clue on whether to invest? No.

    4. The investor will give you advice, connections, and introductions
They may, but most of the introductions your typical investor is going to give you is how to get you out in 3-5 years. You can find a lot of advice in many places. Rarely is the quality of the advice associated with having money involved of largely superior quality.

And if you end up building something of considerable value, then the connections and introductions will come all by themselves. You usually have to work to fight them off with a stick when things are going great. And getting an intro to Mr. Very Important Person before you have anything of material value is usually not going to give you much anyway.

    5. Taking money means big exit or IPO
I’d argue the opposite. When you take money, your exit is bound to be smaller unless you’re playing the Web 2.0 lottery game (where a few lucky contestants gets bought for sums completely uncorrelated to business fundamentals). Taking money means giving up equity, which means there’ll be less left over if you happen to build something that’s valuable enough for others to buy.

And I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the IPO markets aren’t all that interested in eyeball companies without the numbers to back them up any more. Doesn’t matter how many letters of the alphabet you’ve used for series whatever funding before you got there.

If you can build a great, profitable business, you’ll have all the options to sell or go IPO. Taking VC only complicates that.

    6. Taking VC will make your company successful
This one is funny. So if you’re not looking to take VC and play the Web 2.0 lottery or aim for an early exit, you’re just in it for “personal aggrandizement”. If you take the money, you just want the best for your business. Spot the disconnect here.

Now even given all this, there’s actually still an argument for why Joel should take the money. It’ll probably lower the chances of Stack Overflow ultimately succeeding as a long-term sustainable business, but if he has eyed that he has a hot property right now, it’ll be a good time to take some money off the table.

A fool and his money will soon be departed applies equally to venture capitalists as it does to everyone else. If Joel and co. can negotiate a deal with Sand Hill road to give them a nice payout as part of the deal, this might well be even better than trying to shop around Stack Overflow for a sale that it’s probably premature for.

Much better to take a small slice of the proceeds from a “if this just get 1% of the billion dollar advertising market” than to take the slice from “how much money did you make for the past 12 months?” of a strictly look-at-the-books sale.

    Go cherries, go!

  • Epic unveiling of Windows Phone 7 Series – the true story

    ladder2

We will not be judging Windows Phone 7 Series in this story, but we will just tell you how it was unveiled and what are our feelings regarding this unveiling.

And we tell you how it is or how it was. No BS.

So, behind seven seas and seven mountains there was a land called "Catalonia" where people were driving cars with "CAT" country symbol. Capital of this land was a city called Barcelona. To this very city Brits, who de facto are organizers of the Mobile World Congress, have moved this event from Cannes, France, because Cannes was too small and we even remember times, when in Cannes we had to carry out interviews on a motor boats and yachts, because there was not enough space elsewhere. Anyway the general idea of that Brits was to have this event in "some city at the seaside in a warm European country".

Unfortunately in early 2010 global weather went bonkers (north of the planet super cold and south of the planet super warm) and also city of Barcelona, instead of being sunny self, was cold and rainy.

    More after the break…

On February 15, 2010, on Monday, 3PM, a majestic event in history of mobility has taken place: Microsoft has decided to unveil its major version of their mobile operating system for cell phones: Windows Mobile 7. That is what it would be called Windows Mobile 7 logically thinking but the real name is "Windows Phone 7 Series".

So how this legendary (as there were many rumours about it before) event started?Well, it started with very very long queue:

    mwc-2010-ms-press-conf-01
Actually the room where this meeting was organized (called "Garden Room") is just a hotel restaurant where for example hotel guests are eating breakfasts. Clearly it was too small for such an event but since Microsoft for many years has its headquarters in Hotel Catalonia Barcelona Plaza, this year it was also there.

The only requirement to enter the press conference was to have press accreditation (i.e. press badge) at Mobile World Congress and no pre-registration was necessary. If you were not press you would have to be invited by Microsoft individually. However this lack of registration and lack of order at the entry was a bit annoying as several people were jumping the queue in a boorish way, and Spanish ladies who were scanning the badges (with use of Windows Mobile devices with SDIO card with RFID scanner attached to it) were obviously not strong enough to stop these queue-jumping boors. One of these queue-jumping boors co-owns quite popular website about gadgets and his initials are V.N. – you can guess who he is.

The broadcasting journalists were the first who were allowed in. These journalist had special podium in the back of the room, from where they could film from their mighty tripods.

Then the rest, i.e. other journos and bloggers and however got press accreditation at Mobile World Congress were allowed in. Even we.

Obviously the event didn’t start immediately but there was small chit-chat between Microsoft people and guests:

    ladder3

In photo above you can notice Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft (the first from right in the standing group in the middle) chatting with guys from HTC. Speaking of HTC: nobody from HTC was speaking, even for few seconds, during this press conference and only 2 HTC employees were allowed in, one of them being CEO of HTC.

When the session started, it was Ballmer who was talking as first one. It was however clear that this whole mobility thingy is not his area of expertise or even interest, because he quickly introduced another guy – Joe Belfiore – who actually was introduced as the one who designed this whole new Windows Mobile, i.e. Windows Phone 7 Series. We will not delve here into details of the new Windows Phone 7 Series, but it was actually Joe Belfiore who introducing it. And he was very full of himself. Geez, it was like looky at me: I designed Widnows 95, and then I was working in Zune and here I am bringing my brilliance to cell phones.

It struck us strange that he portrayed "tiles" and "hubs" as something totally revolutionary. Hey, what about Android and WebOS widgets? Anyway, we wouldn’t like to judge this new major version of Windows Mobile, but generally speaking we got impression that in fact Windows Mobile 7 Series is actually a Zune Phone. The reason number one being that Zune is now integrated into 7 and this whole experience of Zune is transferred now to cell phones.

When Joe Belfiore was talking about 7, apart from his arrogance, what struck us was that a hot blond was being shown in one of screen shots and he suggested that it is his wife. Geez. Another savoir.

Another strange thing about Joe Belfiore was that he mentioned that he started working on these pesky cell phones merely 1, 1.5 years ago. So we thought: err, what? But Windows Mobile 7 is under development in Microsoft since 2006! The only conclusion that could be is: around 2008 Microsoft has dumped all older developments and started from scratch. Not that it is a bad thing.

During this whole presentation we could hear unusual cheering from the audience. We were almost certain that Microsoft hired some professionals to pretend that they are excited about these new announcement. We wanted to shout: calm down dude, this OS is coming in 9 months or so and competition is not sleeping and don’t know how it will sell yet… but then we realized: no, it cannot be, these super-loud cheers must be artificially manufactured by some hired professionals. Too load to be spontaneous.

    Then Steve Ballmer came back:

… and another strange thing that surprised us was that impression that he gave that users will have the same experience across all 3 platforms/screens of Microsoft. Heh? And where is design of mobile-friendly user interfaces gone? Clearly a desktop user interface can’t be the same as mobile? No, that couldn’t be. Or could it? Maybe Microsoft thinks that it could.

Speaking of Steve Ballmer: no matter what is your opinion about him (generally speaking: a close pal of Bill Gates, who on his own would never become CEO of Microsoft, but as close pal of Bill he could) one thing worth noticing, particularly if you were in the audience and not watching via stream, was his shouting of some words. This shouting was brilliant because it was waking audience up and very well underlining some points (like the fact that Microsoft has no OBJECTION to Flash, that he shouted during FAQ session so loud that we had to clear our ears).

It was clear that Steve Ballmer is high in the sky on cloud 7 and he is only rarely lowering himself to this mobility thingies. Example of this was when he introduced Andy Lees, a Brit, who is now in Charge of Windows Mobile from the point of view of cooperation with partners, not design obviously (that is done by Joe the plumber, err, Joe the smartphone-er Belfiore):

Voice of Andy Lees was soothing to our ears as he is a Brit and clearly he was speaking nice British English. He mentioned 2 things: carrier/operator launch partners and hardware launch partners.

First came hardware launch partners (see picture above) and we were surprised to see Dell there (aren’t they doing Android smartphones now or something?). Obviously HTC was now considered as "one of many" and clearly neglected (as CEO of HTC was not even speaking at this event, not even for 5 seconds).

Then came mobile operator (i.e. carrier) partners:

    mwc-2010-ms-press-conf-04

… and no big surprises here, although, then Andy Lees mentioned so called "premium mobile operator launch partners":

    mwc-2010-ms-press-conf-05
… and our collective jaw dropped and one could hear in the room things like "what? isn’t AT&T an exclusive iPhone vendor in USA?". Anyways 2 guys from AT&T and Orange were asked to say warm things about Microsoft and were thinking: "oi, Andy Lees and your 2 premium partners, why don’t you get a room?".

Funny thing was that obviously iPhone was not mentioned at all when David Christopher was talking (introduced by Microsofties as the guy that takes buying decisions for tens of millions of customers of AT&T – what a BS! Aren’t customers taking these decisions themselves?). David was trying hard to underline how early and well he was partnering with Microsoft in mobile phones.

Then Olaf Svantee from Orange (a European-only operator) came out and in Microsoft-love-fest he underlined that no, that actually he and his Orange SPV was even earlier than AT&T. One year earlier or so. Once again: get a room boys? Is it who loves Microsoft the most competition or what?

Then there was a FAQ session with questions from audience. These questions were so soft that your grandma could ask them. We were almost certain that people asking these questions were planet by Microsoft. We were raising hands too but we were not picked. We wanted to ask some really important questions like "when it comes to multitasking in Windows Phone 7 then is it possible for example to download podcast in background and browse Internet in foreground or are non-active tasks frozen?", but obviously Windows Phone 7 Series phones are still in early alpha development phase and running only on prototypes… so no luck here in asking hard questions.

When it comes to commercial availability then holiday season 2010 was mentioned, what could mean as early as October or November, but realistically speaking it means December 2010.

All in all we are satisfied with the progress. Microsoft has introduced new (new for Microsoft not for the mobile industry) look and feel where it is underlined that one can see everything at one glance in tiles or hubs instead of jumping to individual apps. However we must say that we have impression that around 2 years ago Microsoft has mostly replaced people making Windows Mobile and this arrogance and smugness from old times of Windows Mobile (5 years ago? when Windows Mobile was on the most sophisticated smartphones that only businessmen, professionals and geeks were buying) has returned in new people. Example: when later we asked Microsoft staff at Microsoft stand if they have some Windows Phone 7 to play with, they laughed us out with "we don’t have Windows 7 here, we don’t have desktop versions here, only mobile versions". Generally Windows Phone 7 was running on prototypes and it was shown to selected journos and bloggers but not shown to public, that had to be satisfied with big touch screens remotely connected to Windows Phone 7 phones:

    IMG_0197
This is amazing what Microsoft has done: pre-announced an operating system 9 months before commercial release. In case of Apple it is maximally 2 months before commercial release. However Microsoft might have a point: it was underlined in this press conference that from the developer point of view, Windows Phone 7 will be discussed at MIX conference next month.
Where this story will end? Well, Microsoft has revived interest of masses in their mobile phones. Whether it will translate into sales (a trick that Zune HD, despite being praised by experts, failed to achieve) is another fairytale…

  • Report: Toyota has repaired 500,000 of 2.3 million vehicles recalled

According to Toyota’s general manager of the company’s U.S. division Bob Carter, the automaker has repaired around 500,000 of the 2.3 million vehicles recalled over a potentially sticky gas pedal and restarted sales of thousands more that were off the market.

Carter said that Toyota is weighing moves to win back consumer confidence once repairs are complete on vehicles that have been recalled. It was reported earlier this morning that Toyota is looking into offering new incentive programs and enhanced warranty protection to win back consumer faith in its cars.

“We are going to push the quality benchmark even further,” Carter said.

He said that around 80%, or 88,000 of 112,000, of the vehicles involved in the sales halt that began last month have been repaired by dealers and are now available for sale.

  • Cyclist Floyd Landis Accused Of Illegal Computer Hacking

Apparently, a French court has issued an arrest warrant for cyclist Floyd Landis, who won the 2006 Tour de France, but then had the award stripped after he tested positive for abnormally high levels of testosterone, implying some kind of doping. Now, we’ve argued in the past that the line between drugs and other forms of performance enhancement is pretty blurry at times, but if you’re caught breaking the rules, hacking into the computers of the lab holding your test results in an attempt to discredit them certainly doesn’t look particularly sporting.

  • Audi introduces two new limited-edition packages for the RS6

Audi RS 6 – Click above for high-res image gallery

It wouldn’t take much to convince us to lay down the money for an Audi RS6 if our pockets were deep enough (and if it was available in the United States). After all, what’s not to like? The twin-turbo V10 puts out 580 horsepower and 479 pound-feet torque through a rear-bias all-wheel drive system, and the super sedan and wagon can reach 60 mph in the mid-four second range. As some extra incentive, Audi has announced that it is launching a pair of new equipment packages that make us North America-bound types even more jealous than we were before.

Limited to just 500 units, the Sport and Audi exclusive packages will each feature carbon fiber trim in the engine bay, 20-inch five spoke wheels and an uprated sport suspension. The Sport package also gets a leather-covered instrument panel hood and center console, while the Audi exclusive option allows customers to specify unique colors for both the exterior paint and leather interior. You can read full details in the press release after the jump, if you can deal with the envy.

  • Windows Phone 7 Design philosophy explained

In this video, Albert Shum, director of Mobile Experience Design at Microsoft, has taken some time to explain the design inspiration for Windows® Phone 7 Series.

Andy Lees, Senior Vice President of Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business, expanded on the work:

“We made a very big decision to re-examine everything, because the industries surrounding mobile are at an inflection point,” Lees says. “The technological advances over the past few years enable us to do bold new things we’ve never done before. But the most important thing is that we are bringing it all together with an almost maniacal focus on the consumer.”

“With all of that, we couldn’t be announcing more change than what we’re doing,” Lees says. “The reason we took such care with this release is we’re setting up for the long term. We’re excited about Windows Phone 7 Series, but we’re even more excited about the long-term vision and what that’s going to mean to consumers.”

  • 2010 Geneva Preview: 5 by Peugeot hints at future large luxury sedan

The recently seen Peugeot SR1 Concept will be joined by the new 5 by Peugeot Concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show next month. According to the French automaker, both models offer another indication of the changing face of Peugeot and provides insight into the brand’s ambitions to venture into the large luxury vehicle segment… in a fuel-efficient manner.

The 5 by Peugeot uses the company’s new HYbrid4 technology (which will be launched in 2011 in the Peugeot 3008) mated to a 2.0L HDi FAP 163-hp diesel engine combined with a 37 electric-motor at the rear. Together, the 5 by Peugeot produces 200-hp and a low combined fuel-economy figure of 62 mpg. The concept also features four-wheel-drive and an electric-only mode.

Other than that, it’s one hell of a good-looking concept.

    5 by Peugeot Concept:

    Press Release:

THE “5 BY PEUGEOT” Concept Car

    * Another indication of the changing face of Peugeot
    * Powered by Peugeot’s Hybrid4 technology
    * 200 bhp, four-wheel drive and zero emissions in electric mode

The “5 by Peugeot” concept car is another indication of the changing face of Peugeot and provides an insight into the Marque’s future ambitions in the large luxury vehicle segment. Its pure and elegant lines blend with subtle technical detailing to create an overall effect of a timeless, exclusive and modern design.

Powered by Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology, it ensures both high levels of driving enjoyment and environmental protection – 200 bhp, four-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km or zero in electric mode.

    Bold expressive design

Its dimensions, proportions and styling are a direct response to the changing trends in the large luxury saloon car market segment. It reflects the continual search for more status, quality and performance, combined with a modernity that encompasses the vehicle’s general efficiency in terms of architecture, engines and styling.

“5 BY PEUGEOT” expresses the Marque’s vision and experience in the large touring car market. This concept car is designed and built to have both elegance and precision, but without in any way sacrificing the personality and dynamism so beloved of the Peugeot Marque. The emotion aroused by its exterior design holds the promise of exceptional interior space, convenience and comfort.

A modern, prestigious and timeless styling

The contours of the exterior body flow smoothly, unruffled and without interruption or embellishment from the end of the bonnet to the top of the boot lid. All surfaces are perfectly aligned, with clearances between each element precisely determined to obtain a quality of assembly rivalling that of a goldsmith. The overall effect it creates is that of a vehicle that has been hewn from a solid block of material.

At the front, the interpretation of the Marque’s traditional feline appearance is spectacular; “LED” lights are highlighted by the use of illuminated surrounds that blend perfectly with the overall exterior body styling. The headlamps frame a unique front grille design, whose visual appearance is closely influenced by the Peugeot SR1 concept car. The innovative design of the front grille gives the impression that it is detached from the vehicle; it appears to be suspended in front of the car. The new revised Lion badge naturally takes pride of place in a specially shaped area at the front of the long aluminium bonnet.

The streamlined sides of the car are enhanced further by the bevelled, brushed-aluminium window surrounds and door handles, combined with sculpted 19” wheel trims. The rear design of the vehicle suggests both robustness and power. The bold design of rear lights, consisting of three separate linked light clusters, clearly distinguish the vehicle at night, but also provides a link back to some of the Marque’s historic models.

    A new driving experience

The elegance, precision and dynamic appearance of the car’s exterior styling is also reflected in the car’s technical specification. The “5 BY PEUGEOT” concept incorporates Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology which, will be launched in 2011 in the Peugeot 3008.

A 2.0 litre HDi FAP163 bhp diesel engine, mounted at the front of the vehicle, is combined with a 37 bhp electric motor at the rear. This arrangement provides an overall maximum power of 200 bhp, an electric only mode for low speed operation, four-wheel drive when required, and low fuel consumption and emissions of 74.3 mpg and 99 g/km of CO2 or zero in electric mode.

“5 BY PEUGEOT” is further proof of Peugeot’s environmental strategy. The modular technology of the Hybrid4 system can be combined with a range of naturally-aspirated engines according to market requirements, and can be fitted to different body shapes and different platforms, helping to ensure future driving enjoyment.

  • Windows Phone 7 Marketplace pictured

    marketplace

One are that was not particularly emphasized at today’s Windows Phone 7 announcement was the Marketplace for the new OS.

Peter Wissinger managed to grab pictures of the feature, which really makes us feel sorry for the team to had to code Marketplace for Windows Mobile 6, knowing such a beautiful interface had been denied them.

Of course the real issue is if the WP7 marketplace will be even emptier than the 6.X version, given the complete lack of legacy software and backward compatibility.

Honda Civic Type-R Mugen – Click above for high-res image gallery

When Mugen’s UK-based tuning arm turned up the wick on the Euro Civic Type-R late last year, the result was a 220-hp, stripped out hatch that was only available to 20 lucky consumers. Riding on the critical success of that limited-edition model, Honda UK will begin offering another Mugen-fettled Civic Type-R this March, but it’s decidedly less impressive than its track-worthy predecessor.

Included in the package is a set of front and rear Mugen bumper skirts, lightweight 19-inch wheels, limited slip differential and a Championship White exterior, the last Type-R to receive the storied hue. Unfortunately, no mods have been performed to the engine, exhaust or ECU, so output remains unchanged at 200 horsepower.

Naturally, an assortment of badges and plaques are included on the 200 limited-edition models, which are being released to celebrate Honda’s return to the British Touring Car Championship this April. Make the jump for all the details, along with ordering information… assuming you live across the pond.

  • Pianist Lang Lang Signs Deal With Sony Music Entertainment

Sony Music Entertainment has arranged a comprehensive long-term music and media agreement with internationally celebrated pianist Lang Lang. Lang Lang’s first album on Sony Classical will feature a live recording of Lang Lang’s upcoming recital at Vienna’s legendary Musikverein. The performance will also be made available in high definition video on the Blu-ray format.

This deal expands Sony’s existing relationship with the artist whereby Lang Lang serves as a worldwide brand ambassador to Sony Group. In addition to music albums, Sony will collaborate with Lang Lang on a number of other projects showcasing cutting edge technologies, exploring opportunities for 3D video and web-based music education initiatives.

“I enjoy the innovative and creative energy of Sony,” says Lang Lang. “They are not just looking into the future, they are shaping it, and I am thrilled to be a part of this exciting process. We share a vision. This is why our relationship is not just about making great recordings; it’s also about technology and its future.”

Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation, said: “Lang Lang is one of the most passionate, dynamic and gifted artists in the world today. We are thrilled to welcome his enormous talent and global appeal not only to Sony Music, but to the entire Sony family. We look forward to collaborating with Lang Lang to create innovative and unique entertainment experiences utilizing his musical genius and technical savvy.”

Lang Lang performing an encore (Chopin Etude No. 3, Op. 10 in E major) during his appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker on January 31st, 2009 in Berlin.

Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, said: “It gives me great pleasure to welcome Lang Lang to our distinguished roster of classical artists. We are committed to working closely with him on many aspects of his outstanding career, which we are proud to say includes educational and philanthropic activities. Signing an artist as important and multi-dimensional as Lang Lang is exciting for me as a fan. For Sony Music, it is another significant step as we continue to focus on growing our Classical business.”

Bogdan Roscic, President of Sony Classical, said: “I have had the pleasure of working with Lang Lang in the past, and already from the very beginning of his career, he showed a level of passion for recordings, media and new technology that’s quite unusual in our business. That open-mindedness has made him one of the most important ambassadors for the art form itself, bringing classical music to audiences which musical gifts alone, even as prodigious as his, could not reach in today’s culture. We are all very excited about writing the next chapter of this story with him.”

The synergy between Sony and Lang Lang is also apparent in their immediate response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Both the artist and the company have announced their decisions to donate much-needed funds towards UNICEF’s long-term relief effort. On Sunday, March 21, Lang Lang, who has been a UNICEF Global Goodwill Ambassador since 2006, will perform at Carnegie Hall with Maestro Christoph Eschenbach and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra in a UNICEF benefit concert. In support of this initiative, Sony Classical will release a recording of Frederic Chopin: Polonaise in A-flat Major No. 6 Op. 53 “Heroic,” as an exclusive iTunes download, in tribute to the heroes working to alleviate the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti. All proceeds from the recording and concert, as well as Lang Lang’s fee, will be donated to the US Fund for UNICEF.

  • Connecting With Fans And Giving Them A Reason To Buy Requires A Lot Of Experimenting

With my big post explaining the whole CwF+RtB concept in a lot more detail, complete with examples of many artists, small to big, who are using it, we’ve been hearing about more and more artists. It’s really great, and it’s often difficult to choose which ones are worth writing up. But sometimes an example comes along that really highlights a point that hasn’t necessarily been driven home before, and that helps make the decision easy. ChurchHatesTucker points us to a recent blog post by singer Marian Call in which she talks about her various experiments in connecting with fans and the surprise result of giving them a reason to buy. I can’t emphasize enough that the whole post is worth reading, but I’ll share a few highlights.

First, she talks about how much value there is in really connecting with your fans over social networks, and that doesn’t mean just putting out blast messages about what you’re doing, but also reading about what they’re doing — and, at times, going beyond that, including visiting “their websites, blogs, photo albums once in a while.” Obviously, you can’t do this all the time or with every fan, but it certainly does help connect with many fans in a very genuine way. It’s not marketing, it’s about making a connection and building a real relationship.

But the bigger point that she makes is that all of this — both sides of the CwF + RtB equation — require an awful lot of experimenting:

About twice a week I think, “Why don’t I try this crazy idea and see if it works?” about some element of my career. With no label, no manager, and no inner voice of reason slow me down, I get to experiment all I want. 90% of my crazy ideas have to do with social networking — which I spend half a lifetime doing, despite the crap I take from my family and Real Life friends. (Hey, some of us actually do bond over web comics, starship replicas, the fail whale, and photos of stuff on cats.) Mostly my nutty ideas work just a little bit. Some are epic failures. But my experimental flopping and floundering inches me closer to the day when I’ll be totally financially independent as a full-time musician. Plus it’s more fun than having a real job.

But every now and then a crazy idea works really really really good. Bam!

The really good idea in this case? She was performing a live gig at Whole Wheat Radio that was to be streamed online, and in a quick & dirty way, decided to offer up a special limited edition “bootleg” CD of live tracks. She said that her Twitter and Facebook friends had been complaining that she hadn’t released any new music in a while, and she’s still working on her next “studio” album — but in just two hours she was able to assemble everything she needed for the Marian Call Bootleg Album, which she decided to make available for one night only. How did it work out?

I planned to sell 20-40 of my little bootleg CD’s. Silly me. I sold well over 200. My little stack of jewel cases looked so pathetic.

WholeWheatRadio.org broke every record for online listenership, CD sales, tips — everything. The more listeners tuned in, the more tuned in, and the more money they gave, the more money they gave. The crowd online was thrilled to be breaking WWR records. I drove away from Talkeetna having earned about $4,000 in one night, with a new CD to produce in just a couple of days and an avalanche of e-mail and publicity requests to deal with. Seldom have I been so happy and so panicked.

Again, this isn’t the solution for everyone. But it shows how really connecting with fans, and trying different stuff out continuously, helps. Eventually, one or more of those ideas takes off with great results. While she may not be a full-time musician yet, it certainly seems like Marian has all the right pieces in place (and, yes, that includes great music).

  • Daimler dealers have until 2012 to get ready for electric-vehicles

Daimler AG is giving its dealer network ample time to prepare for the introduction of electric cars; the manufacturer aims to ensure that the network is prepared within two years.

“The expertise must be available in service shops by 2012,” said development chief Thomas Weber. “The entire organization has to be trained on the issue of high-voltage power.”

Though competitors are getting ready to roll out electric models ahead of Daimler, Weber says that they underestimate the time required to fully train and develop a competent service network for the electric technology.

The first 1,000 electric Smart cars will be delivered to leasees this year, and starting in 2012, Daimler aims to build at least 10,000 e-Smarts per year.

“Even in the electric age, the drivetrain will be part of the essence of the Daimler brand,” Weber said, referring to Daimler’s exceptional reputation with respect to quality vehicles.

Jarno Trulli shakes down the Lotus Evora Cup racer – Click above for high-res image gallery

It’s not at all unusual for Formula One drivers on teams that have connections to consumer automakers to spend some of their off time developing road cars for those companies. Countless Ferrari street offerings have been tweaked by Michael Schumacher. Last week, as Jarno Trulli was waiting for his first crack at the Lotus T127 F1 car, he spent some time shaking down the new Evora Cup racer at the Snetterton circuit in the UK.

Trulli and race engineer Gianluca Pisanello spent two days working on suspension, aerodynamic and engine calibrations. The Evora will be used in a new single make series along the lines of the long-running Porsche Cup. The car is also eligible for GT4 class racing against the likes of the Audi R8 LMS and Porsche 911s. The 4.0-liter Toyota based V6 has been bumped up to 400 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and given a dry-sump lubrication system, and its light weight will be a necessary ally in the battle with more powerful cars. While you wait for the series to get cranking, you can slake your curiosity on our high-res gallery below and the press release after the jump.

  • Report: Volvo C30 Electric not come to the U.S. for now

Even though the Volvo C30 BEV was introduced on American soil at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, it will not be offered in the United States… at least for now.

When Volvo kicked-off development of the C30 BEV, it decided that the batteries would not have to be capable of quick charging in three hours or less. The technologies required the Volvo C30 BEV to be charged for six to eight hours overnight, using standard household current.

What does that have to do with it not coming to the U.S.? Well, market realities and restrictions. Volvo plans to market the C30 only in Europe for now, and the European Union has yet to agree on quick-charging standards.

“For the time being, the volume is all for Europe,” Lennart Stegland, president of Volvo’s Special Vehicles unit, told reporters at a media event.

Are you upset? Yeah, we’re not that saddened by it either.

Refresher: Power for the Volvo C30 Electric Drive comes from a 82kW (111-hp) electric-motor. 0 to 62 mph comes in 10.5 seconds with a total range of 93 miles on an 8 hour charge.

  • TweetCatcha: Visualizing Tweets of NYTimes News Articles

    tweetcatcha.jpg
As a student work, I would say this one can count. Tweetcatcha [parsons.edu] visualizes the tweets resulting from the latest news articles that appeared during the last 24 hours on the New York Times website. It
uses the NYTimes Timeswire API and Twitter to discover the tweets according to the titles and URLs of recent news articles. Searching through Twitter for valid URLs was made much easier by using BackTweets, a service of BackType.

All the tweets are arranged around a set of 24 rings, one for each hour in the day. The location of a tweet is based on the time difference from the article posting to the time the tweet was created. If a tweet was posted less than an hour after the article, then it would be very close to the inner most ring, and vice versa.

Be patient, as the viz application seemingly takes a long time to load. More detailed infos at the authors’ blog post.

  • Tata Motors names ex GM executive Carl-Peter Forster Group CEO

Tata Motors announced today that former General Motors executive Carl-Peter Forster will become the group CEO. Forster, 55, will be responsible for the company’s global operations including the company’s Jaguar/Land Rover unit.

Forster recently left GM as the company’s Europe President and Opel/Vauxhall chairman after not seeing eye-to-eye with the automaker’s decision not to sell Opel to Magna International Inc. and Russian partner Sberbank.

Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors, said that Forster’s appointment as CEO would greatly help the company’s ambition to become “a truly international company.”

Forster, 55, has 24 years of international experience in the automobile industry. He also had 13 years of experience in BMW where he held various positions including that of Managing Director of BMW South Africa and was also on the Managing Board of BMW responsible for manufacturing.
