  • 8500A: Peak Power Meter

The Giga-tronics 8500A Series Peak Power Meters combine CW power measurement with the ability to make precise peak power measurements at any point on a pulsed waveform.
This dual, built-in capability lets you make CW measurements and analyze pulsed waveforms with a single instrument.

The meter is available in a single or dual channel configuration. A built-in display shows measurements such as rise time, fall time and pulse width plus the pulse profile. And you can use a reference cursor to read peak power at any point on the pulse waveform.

Giga-tronics CW and Peak power sensors contain an EEPROM programmed with the frequency calibration factors measured at the factory, or in your cal lab. When you key in the frequency at which power is being measured, the meter automatically applies the correct cal factor from the sensor EEPROM.

    Features
Rise time < 15 ns Sensor frequency range from 0.03 or 0.75 to 18.5, 26.5 or 40 GHz Power Range: -20 to +20 dBm Pulse; -40 to +20 dBm CW Measurement resolution is 100 ps Measure the same point on repetitive pulses at over 70 measurements/second Built-in power sweep calibrator with NIST traceable accuracy

  • Straightforward quality control of fats and oils

Minimum operator involvement and high analytical productivity – these are key benefits of automated thermometric titration. The method is ideal for monitoring the quality of fats and oils, namely to determine crucial parameters such as free fatty acid content and iodine value.

    Benefits of thermometric titrimetry
Thermometric titration means that there is no electrical contact with titrating solutions, so samples can be titrated in a totally non-aqueous environment. The endpoint is determined automatically, not prone to operator bias and can be detected in highly colored or turbid solutions, or even in media containing suspended solids. Moreover, the thermometric sensing probe requires no maintenance, special preparation, regeneration or calibration and can be stored dry between titrations.

Determination of free fatty acid content and iodine value
Two determinations common in the analysis of fats and oils illustrate the versatility of the technique, namely the free fatty acid content and the iodine value. In both analyses, excellent agreement can be achieved with results obtained by official methods of analysis. The titrations are very fast, typically less than a minute in duration and can be easily automated by using a sample changer. Application Notes with the details on the determination of free fatty acid content and iodine value in vegetable fats and oils can be downloaded from the Metrohm webpage.

  • DaVis’10: Design and Aesthetics in Visualization

    davis.jpg
Everybody seems to complains that art, design, research and practice in information visualization should be talking more to each other.

Well, here is a unique opportunity: Andrew Vande Moere and I will soon be hosting a special symposium, co-located with the IEEE IV010 conference in London. We call it: DAVis, the 5th International Symposium on Design and Aesthetics in Visualisation.

    From the (brand-new) call:

“This symposium aims to bring together researchers and practitioners of design, art and related disciplines. The goal is to share their stories and experiences on how the needs and goals of both users and businesses are met through information visualisation.

It supports the publication of research in two general domains: Design and Aesthetics. Design refers to the development of visualisation as a creative design process. Aesthetics refers to the role of user experience in visualisation, as understood in three distinct components: aesthetic experience, experience of meaning, and emotional experience.

This symposium presents an opportunity to explore these issues and their consequences for the field of information visualization. In particular, we encourage the submission of design critiques; case studies, possibly with accompanying evaluation studies or critical reflections; position papers; or reports on the impact that visualization research or visualization use has had on the work and life of people. In this context, the story of failures or abandoned approaches can be as informative as descriptions of success. The fields of application are open, and can reach from traditional screen-based graphs, over innovative multi-touch interfaces, to dynamic media architecture displays.”

So – designers, coders, artists, visualizers – go forth and write your way in. Note that all papers will be reviewed before acceptance can be given.

Beware: the deadline is quite tight: March 1 March 21. But honestly, you would not have started earlier, anyways – right? Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions, and we are really looking forward to your submissions.

NOTE: Rules about the style, maximum length, important dates, etc. is available at the IV’10 website.

  • Climate Science Compromise by Doug L. Hoffman

    Article Tags: Doug L. Hoffman

A new round of pro-global warming papers have begun to appear as the vested interests of the climate change community attempt to resuscitate their failed theory. Having been exposed as a theory full of holes, based on uncertain, perhaps even corrupt, data and overly dependent on computer modeling for “proof,” the supporters of catastrophic climate change are trying to rally. Amid mounting attacks on the IPCC, a small number of its leaders are trying to explain themselves to colleagues, the press and the people of the world. Now that their highhanded, tolerate-no-dissent approach has failed, it seems some IPCC scientists are open to compromise.

In a news maker interview in the February 12, 2010, edition of Science, Christopher Field of the Carnegie Institution for Science attempted to respond to the avalanche of criticism that has engulfed the IPCC since the uncovering of the Hadley CRU emails and the discovery that many of the assertions in the AR4 report were taken from untrustworthy sources. Field has been designated co-chair of the report by Working Group 2, which will examine the impacts of a changing climate for the 2014 edition of IPCC reports. He helped write the rare public acknowledgment of error apologizing for the statement in the 2007 IPCC report that stated the Himalayan glaciers were “very likely” to melt away by 2035.

“It’s clear there really wasn’t a body of evidence required to assign that “very likely” term,” said Field. “It’s hard for me to figure out what might be a process that would sustain the credibility that should be associated with the IPCC process,” he continued, “I must admit I don’t really have a mature strategy for how we deal with [substantive] errors.” And there in lies part of the problem—the hoopla surrounding global warming has been the result of a politically motivated, haphazard process that hurriedly prepared a series of slipshod reports based on shoddy, substandard science aimed at selling the dangers of climate change to the public. That process now stands revealed as a colossal farce.

  • Michelle Obama: Grace Under Fire

Lynn Sweet of the Politics Daily wrote about Michelle Obama and her take on Sarah Palin, in an article called “Michelle Obama on Sarah Palin.”  This article is in response to Mrs. Obama’s interview with CNN’s Larry King on February 9th.
    Says Sweet,

Mrs. Obama went on Larry King’s show as part of her media blitz in connection with the Tuesday launch of her “Let’s Move” anti-childhood obesity drive. King asked Mrs. Obama about Palin three days after Palin took a shot at President Obama at the National Tea Party Convention. Said Palin, “And our president would do well to take note of an observation John F. Kennedy had made once he was in office. That all of the world’s problems aren’t his predecessor’s fault.” And later, “How is that hope-y, change-y stuff working out for ya?”

The article reveals how King peppered Michelle with questions about Palin, The Tea Party, and her husband’s criticizers. Of course, Michelle was grace under fire and kept a laser focus on the initiative at hand, childhood obesity.

King seem frustrated when Mrs. Obama skirted his question about what she made of the Tea Party phenomenon with this answer: “I’m focused on what’s in front of me. And right now, that’s ending childhood obesity in a generation — getting this done.”

Lynn Sweet’s article was relatively impartial and gave a decent representation of FLOTUS’ interview with King. With all of the controversy surrounding Michelle’s approach to her initiative on ending childhood obesity, it was refreshing to read an article that was minus stark criticism and Monday morning quarterbacking.  Posted by Bridgette of http://trailblazer-firstlady.blogspot.com.

  • THE GREAT CLIMATE CHANGE RETREAT by Ed Price, Daily express

Article Tags: ClimateGate, Front Page News

Image AttachmentTHERE has been no global warming for 15 years, a key scientist admitted yesterday in a major U-turn.

Professor Phil Jones, who is at the centre of the “Climategate” affair, conceded that there has been no “statistically significant” rise in temperatures since 1995.

The admission comes as new research casts serious doubt on temperature records collected around the world and used to support the global warming theory.

Researchers said yesterday that warming recorded by weather stations was often caused by local factors rather than global change.

The revelations will be seized upon by sceptics as fresh evidence that the science of global warming is flawed and climate change is not man-made.

The Daily Express has led the way in exposing flaws in the arguments supporting global warming.

Last month we revealed how the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change was forced to admit its key claim that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was “speculation” lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The influential IPCC then admitted it had got the key claim wrong and announced a review.

The Daily Express has also published a dossier listing 100 reasons why global warming was part of a natural cycle and not man-made.

Yesterday it emerged that Professor Jones, whose raw data is crucial to the theory of climate change, had admitted he has trouble “keeping track” of the information.

Colleagues have expressed concern that the reason he has refused Freedom of Information requests for the data is that he has lost some of the crucial papers.
