  • Woman accused of running over cop

A Back of the Yards neighborhood woman has been charged with three felonies, two misdemeanors and issued six traffic tickets after she allegedly struck an officer with a vehicle following a chase and crash early Sunday on the Southwest Side.

Police fired shots at the woman, but she was not struck by the police gunfire.

She was hospitalized after being Tasered following the crash. The officer struck by the vehicle was also injured, police said.

Rosa Gutierrez, 31, of the 5000 block of South Hoyne Avenue, was charged Saturday one count each of felony aggravated battery to a police officer, felony possession of a controlled substance, felony aggravated fleeing an accident with bodily injury, misdemeanor driving under the influence and misdemeanor resisting/obstructing a peace officer, according to a police statement.

Officers responded about midnight to a report of shots fired near South Kedzie Avenue and West 60th Street and saw a vehicle matching the description of a dispatch report fleeing the scene, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.

The officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted to curb the vehicle, but the motorist — identified in the statement as Gutierrez — refused to stop and committed multiple traffic violations in an attempt to elude police, Ursitti said.

The vehicle eventually crashed into a residential garage in the 4100 block of West Marquette Avenue at 12:07 p.m., police said. When officers approached, Gutierrez allegedly reversed the vehicle into an officer, prompting another officer to fire shots at Gutierrez, police said.

The motorist was not struck by the police gunfire, and a Taser was then deployed when the motorist resisted arrest, Ursitti said.

Gutierrez and the officer were both taken to local hospitals, where they were treated and released, police said.

Gutierrez was also ticketed for failing to stop at a stop sign, disobeying a red light, driving the wrong way on a one way street, driving on a suspended license, operating a vehicle without insurance and driving 15 to 20 miles per hour above the speed limit, according to the statement.

Narcotics were also recovered on the scene, Ursitti said.

Gutierrez is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Sunday in Central Bond Court (Br. 1) at 2600 S. California Ave.

Wentworth Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is investigating.

  • Durbin traveling in Africa this week

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin will travel to Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Sudan this week to examine U.S. foreign assistant programs in the region, Durbin’s office announced Saturday.

The trip by Durbin and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) will focus on global health, maternal/infant mortality, clean water, sanitation, refugee, and economic development activities, according to a release from Durbin’s office.

The senators will also discuss regional peacekeeping and diplomatic issues.

Because of security concerns, the full itinerary will not be released in advance.

Durbin and Brown departed Friday, traveling first to Tanzania where they plan meet with embassy officials, tour rural health clinics and hold meetings with Tanzanian health officials.

The senators will then travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo where they will discuss regional security issues with the UN peacekeeping force stationed in the eastern part of that country.

They will also tour refugee camps and health facilities which house and treat victims of the region’s bloody civil war.

The Senators will return to the United States on Friday, Feb. 19.

  • Battery case against train conductor dismissed

CROWN POINT, Ind. — Battery charges have been dropped against a conductor accused of tossing a passenger off a South Shore commuter rail line train in northwest Indiana.

Videotape from the train exonerated Gregory Beach of the charge after his attorney, John Vouga, had it enhanced by a private company.

“It was quite persuasive for us,” Lake County (Ind.) Deputy Prosecutor Mark Acevedo said Friday.

Acevedo said his office provided Vouga with the paperwork to drop the misdemeanor charges on Wednesday.

Calvin Kirk of Gary had accused Beach of rousing him from sleep on March 28 and pushing him off the top steps of the train at Dune Park station in Chesterton, Ind.

Kirk had also claimed that the alleged push caused him to lose teeth and suffer cuts and abrasions.

“The evidence clearly showed that Greg Beach never touched Mr. Kirk,” Vouga said.

“We were able to provide video evidence that showed it was impossible for him to do what he was accused of. He was in fact an innocent man and always was and is extremely happy his name has been cleared.”

  • State funding shortage may doom library systems

Libraries across Illinois may again be victims of the state’s ongoing financial woes, industry leaders fear.

Regional cooperative library organizations such as the North Suburban Library System already have slashed budgets and cut staffs because millions of dollars in promised state funds haven’t been delivered.

If the money doesn’t come soon, representatives say, more cuts would be needed. The organizations could even shut down, officials said.

That could dramatically affect services at libraries throughout the state, they said.

For example, a delivery service that lets library patrons order materials from distant libraries would disappear, said Judy Hoffman, spokeswoman for the North Suburban Library System.

Agreements that let patrons visit other libraries and borrow materials at those facilities could collapse, too, she said.

Those steps would restrict patrons to the materials in their local libraries.

“And in communities with small libraries and small collections, that’s limiting,” Hoffman said.

But as Illinois’ budget problems worsen, lawmakers will have to decide which programs are essential and must be funded and which are not as critical, said state Rep. Ed Sullivan, a Mundelein Republican.

It could come down to funding schools or libraries, he said – not both.

“Those are some of the hard decisions we have to make,” said Sullivan, whose mother is a librarian at the Fremont Public Library in Mundelein.

Librarians from across the Chicago area will meet with state lawmakers on Monday to decry the situation. The meeting, which isn’t open to the public, is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. at the Arboretum Club in Buffalo Grove.

Librarians representing communities such as Algonquin, Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Elgin, Grayslake, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Mount Prospect, Mundelein, Palatine, Schaumburg and Wauconda will be among those attending the discussion.

Sullivan, state Sen. Pamela Althoff of McHenry, state Rep. Carol Sente of Vernon Hills and state Rep. Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook are among the Illinois lawmakers who’ve promised to appear, organizers said.

Nine regional library systems operate across the state. Comprised of more than 2,200 public, academic and special libraries, they help local facilities share resources and information.

Much of the suburban Chicago area is served by the North Suburban Library System, which is based in Wheeling and serves about 650 facilities in Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties.

DuPage County has its own system, as does the Chicago Public Library.

The organizations are funded through the state budget by the Illinois State Library and the Secretary of State’s office. This fiscal year, they’re supposed to share $15 million, about 17 percent less than last year’s total, officials said.

So far, they’ve only received about $5 million, and those payments came months late, Hoffman said. Locally, the North Suburban group was supposed to get $2 million in state funds but has only received about $717,000, Hoffman said.

The payment problems have arisen at a time when library use is up because patrons are seeking free books, DVDs and other materials – as well as entertainment programs and a variety of services – from local libraries.

“Libraries are serving unprecedented need, both in materials and support,” Hoffman said. “This is a social service to the community, and it would be cruel to close it down at its most needed time.”

These money problems aren’t limited to libraries. Social service agencies, schools and other organizations also are being shorted by the state to the tune of more than $3 billion in unpaid bills.

Last week, the Daily Herald reported state Sen. Dan Duffy was threatened with eviction from his Barrington office because the state hasn’t been paying the rent on time.

“Unfortunately, we’re going to see (these problems) in so many institutions,” Sullivan said.

Some temporary financial relief could be coming within the next month, but the situation is going to get worse by the time the fiscal year ends in June, Sullivan said.

  • Deadly fire in Cicero

Two adults are dead and several people are missing following a Sunday morning extra-alarm fire that raged through a Cicero residence, which may have housed anywhere from 20 to 40 people.

Firefighters have found the remains of what appear to be two adults in the three-story, three-flat building at 3034 S. 48th Ct. in west suburban Cicero that ignited around 6:30 a.m., said town spokesperson Ray Hanania.

A firefighter, one of sixty from six fire departments who responded to the 2-11 extra-alarm blaze, suffered unknown injuries because of the fire, said Hanania, who didn’t have further details about the firefighter’s condition.

Emergency officials still don’t know how many people live at the residence, which is making a search for an unknown number of unaccounted-for individuals more difficult, Hanania said.

“There may have been four or five families in there, we don’t know,” Hanania said. “I’ve heard numbers between 20 and 40 people,” which he has yet to confirm, he said.

Hanania said that questions about possible over-occupancy at the residence was a topic he is “definitely going to look at this week,” in the wake of the deadly blaze.

The fire was mostly extinguished as of 10:50 a.m., but crews are searching the still-smoldering building for residents and for clues as to the cause of the fire said Hanania. He could not immediately say if the blaze was accidental or suspicious.

Crews first responded around 6:30 a.m. when a girl living at the residence with her mother and siblings called to say there was a fire, and firefighters responded quickly, Hanania said.

“By the time they got there, the fire just raged through the building,” he said.

Fifteen people from the residence were taken to a shelter at the town’s public safety office, which is providing food and emergency care, he said.

Seven adults and 12 children received emergency assistance this morning from the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, according to a release from the organization.

The Red Cross provided the people with food, clothing, warm winter coats, shoes and shelter, the release said.

  • GM offering $2,000 incentive to Saturn owners to stay with company

Hoping not to break bonds with some of its least committed customers after deciding to shut down the Saturn brand due to the failure of an attempted sale to Penske, GM is offering Saturn owners $2,000 in incentives towards a new vehicle from one of its four surviving brands.

The deal began on Feb. 2 and will run through March 31 on select 2009/2010 Buick, GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac models. The $2,000 will be offered on top of any existing incentives.

To qualify, a Saturn owner must have bought or leased their vehicle at least 6 months ago and are not required to trade in their vehicles.

  • Ford will help dealers become greener, improve customer service

FoMoCo is helping its dealerships become greener… well, almost. For a fee, Ford will assess a dealership’s energy use and recommend how it can become more energy efficient, said Ken Czubay, Ford’s vice president of U.S. sales and marketing.

Ford says that as a part of the Green Dealer Initiative, which is voluntary, dealers may have to spend $100,000 to $800,000 to make the recommended changes. Czubay said that dealers can make up the investment within three years.

At a meeting with dealers, FoMoCo also announced a Customer Service Committee of 18 dealers. The committee will study how dealers can improve customers’ experiences.

  • Grottenbahn

Upper Austria, Austria | Follies and Grottoes

Advertised as a nostalgic ride for grown-up Austrians, the Linz Grottobahn is a surreal 104-year-old Disney-esque ride through the world of European fairy tales.

Built in 1906, the little Grottobahn or “cave train” takes you on a trip through Mount Storm into a world of dwarves, dragons, and – in the words of one visitor – “Christmassy-sounding music sung by spookily voiced children.” The train goes around the circuit three times, first showing off one set of tableaux such as “gnomes and dwarves fishing, getting into scrapes with giant insects, larking about, and generally acting like you’d expect monstrous-looking garden gnomes to behave.” On the second trip around, visitors are offered other set-ups, including some delightfully tatty – and quite possibly century-old – taxidermy.

Finally, on the third trip, colorful lights are turned on, and at the end of the ride the Dragon, which serves as the head of the train, snorts steam. Downstairs, below the train ride, is a miniature version of Linz circa 1900, as well as a number of fairy-tale dioramas, including Sleeping Beauty in a coffin surrounded by the seven dwarfs and a rather creepy diorama of Hansel and Gretel outside a burning gingerbread house.

  • Obama’s Scorched Earth Policy.

02.14.10 11:22 AM posted by Skip MacLure

With his entire legislative agenda frozen in Congress and not likely to go anywhere soon, our President is dusting off his best Hugo Chavez imitation and is preparing to govern by decree. Everything the American people have told him in none too uncertain terms they want NO PART OF, the White House is preparing to end-run by utilizing executive orders. The ever-unsavory White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel stated that they had a list of executive orders and directives ‘across a broad front’ of issues.

All recent presidents have used executive privilege to one degree or another, but none have dared to abrogate the will of the people this flagrantly should Mr.Obama attempt to go this route. Increasingly unpopular President Obama could be sealing his fate as a one term president if he goes ahead.

Attempting to APPEAR to be willing to include Republican lawmakers in bi-partisan heath care talks, insultingly excluding them for over a year, may play well with some inside the beltway but not likely to be with Republicans, who are constantly being reminded by constituents and the millions of Conservatives and Independents who make up the new American Revolution that we want nothing of the President’s agenda, not one tiny bit.

Americans, stung by lies, deceit and backdoor deal-making, will not warm to the Democrats games anytime soon. Furthermore, Obama’s image as a ’strong leader’ and a president ‘able to get things done’ took a severe nose dive among Independents, according to a January Pew Research Center for the People and the Press report.

This could be one of those defining decisions. The sort he may not be able to back and change, as he’s doubled back on so much of what he’s done thus far. It’s likely the American people won’t let him either. read more »

  • Hot Wheels sponsors Danica, has her design a car

    Danicar
Danica Patrick at the unveiling of the Hot Wheels “Danicar” design – Click above for high-res image gallery

Hot Wheels has jumped on board the Danica Patrick NASCAR sponsor train. What does it all mean? Well, other than an TV camera-height embroidered logo on her Nomex suit, it means that Danica’s getting a Hot Wheels car of her own. The “Danicar” is apparently Hot Wheels’ first celeb-designed car (she’s credited as a co-designer along with the HW design team in El Segundo, a group of people who may well have the greatest jobs ever.) It’s one of those pie-in-the-sky Hot Wheels originals, featuring an Indy-style nose section and cockpit that leads to a big rear-mounted engine and quad, jumbo-sized drive wheels in back.

We figured it might be a positioned as a more collectible or special-edition car (the kinds that usually retail in the $2 to $3 range), but a Hot Wheels spokesperson set us straight: When it eventually ships, the Danicar will be part of the basic 1:64-scale assortment that tempts you from the toy aisle pegs at around 99 cents a pop. It won’t be limited in quantity for collectability’s sake, so anyone who wants it should be able to snag one. PR from Mattel (featuring an absolutely cringe-inducing Danica sponsor-speak quote) is pasted after the jump.

  • Rosicrucian Pyramids of Bucks County

Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Curious Places of Worship

According to the legend, in the early 1400s a man named Christian Rosenkreuz (German for Rose-Cross) took a pilgrimage to the Middle East and learned among Turkish, Arab, and Persian sages and Sufi or Zoroastrian masters lost and esoteric wisdom. He then supposedly returned and founded the “Fraternity of the Rose Cross” and had a secret temple, the Sanctus Spiritus, or “The House of the Holy Spirit” built.

No such man, or temple, ever existed and the modern day Rosicrucians say as much. The first documents regarding Rosenkreuz, and Rosicrucianism surfaced in Germany a hundred years after Christian Rosenkreuz is supposed to have lived. Showing up in the early 1600s as anonymous manifestos citing a “most laudable Order” the Rosicrucians, consisting of a group of mystic-philosopher-doctors promoting a “Universal Reformation of Mankind.” Rosenkreuz himself only shows up in the third of these documents, and may have been a stand in for a actual person, possibly Francis Bacon.

The documents themselves were encouraging of religious reform, mysticism, and alchemy, but may have been intended as no more than satire, or even hoax. Johann Valentin Andreae claimed later in life to have written the third of the documents and called it a “Ludibrium,” a trivial game or farce. Whether intended as satire, hoax, joke, or as a reform tract, it was a massive success. The idea of a secret society of alchemists with esoteric ancient knowledge from the East, caught fire in Europe.

Like the current Priory of Sion myth (another ludibrium made up in the 1950s, which has led to the Da Vinci Code and popular conspiracy theories) the Rosicrucians were too good a story to pass up. Since the supposed society was secret, actions could be taken anonymously by whomever wanted in on the joke. In Paris in 1622 two posters showed up on the walls reading “We, the Deputies of the Higher College of the Rose-Croix, do make our stay, visibly and invisibly, in this city” and “The thoughts attached to the real desire of the seeker will lead us to him and him to us.”

In a example of life imitating art, the myth gave rise to real organizations. Inspired by the idea of a secret society of learned men, astronomers such as Johannes Kepler, Georg Joachim Rheticus, John Dee and Tycho Brahe formed an actual society, known as the Invisible College, to acquire knowledge through experimental investigation. It would eventually become the Royal Society.

It would not be until the mid 1800s that what we think of as the Rosicrucians would form. Starting as groups intertwined with Masons — another secret society with fictional ancient ties to the East– the Fraternitas Rosae Crucis was formed in in 1858. (In the 1900s Christian-Rosicrucian groups separate from the Masons began to emerge, such as the Order of the Temple of the Rosy Cross, associated not with the masons but with the 1900s occult group, the Theosophical Society.)

Begun in 1858 by doctor, occultist, and writer Paschal Beverly Randolph, the Fraternitas Rosae Crucis is the oldest of the modern Rosicrucian movements and is considered the main Rosicrucian organization today. A friend of Abraham Lincoln and descendant of William Randolph, Paschal Beverly Randolph was of mixed race, a major proponent of reform and birth control, and (though generally glossed over by the Rosicrucians today) was a practitioner of “sex magic” or mystical rituals involving sex.

It is this order, the Fraternitas Rosae Crucis, (revived in 1920 by Reuben Swinburne Clymer) that settled in Pennsylvania, and today owns land in Bucks County on which three Rosicrucian pyramids sit. The headquarters of the Fraternitas Rosae Crucis, besides the three temples, it includes a number of normal buildings and “The Beverly Hall,” a large stone building named after the fraternities founder Paschel Beverly Randolph.

Surrounded by “No Trespassing” signs, the pyramids are aligned smallest to largest and covered in Rosicrucian symbolism inside and out, including images of a winged world crowned by a skull and crossbones, and the infamous pyramid with floating eye — which the US used first in the Great Seal and which the Masons and Rosicrucians lifted for their own symbolic purposes, but which inspires no end of conspiracy theories. Also on the pyramids are commemorations of Masonic groups and leadership, such as the Supreme Councils of nine, seven, and three, and the Supreme Grand Master, Member Sublime Third, and Hierophant. Among those cited are Benjamin Franklin who was a prominent member of the Masons (back when the Mason’s were a science-minded reform society) as well as a supposed member of the Paris Rosicrucian lodge.

Today the Rosicrucians, like the Masons, wield little power and are not much more than supper clubs and networking opportunities, with an increasingly aged membership. They do however continue to practice the secret Masonic and Rosicrucian rituals — based largely on what 1600 and 1700s nobles imagined ancient Eastern rituals might be like — and according to locals, during the summer solstice, the Fraternitas Rosae Crucis perform a solstice ritual in ceremonial robes, standing in circles around the pyramids and chanting loudly.

The Rosicrucian pyramids can be seen from the road, but they are on private property and if caught snooping you will be chased off and likely prosecuted for trespassing. It is possible however, that if you contact the group they may be more than happy to arrange a tour of the grounds.

  • A climate change sceptic bites back by Nigel Lawson, The Independent on Sunday

    Article Tags: Nigel Lawson

The former chancellor takes aim at the IoS and says that the debate on global warming is not a question of ‘goodies and baddies’.

I have considerable affection for, and some slight connection with, The Independent. More than 40 years ago, when I was editor of the Spectator, I gave a promising young journalist called Andreas Whittam Smith his first column. A decade or so later he founded, and was the first editor of, The Independent. And in recent years my elder son, Dominic, has been contributing a weekly column to the paper.

So it was with sorrow as well as anger that I read the disgraceful story splashed all over the front and second pages of last week’s issue, headed “Think-tanks take oil money and use it to fund climate deniers”, clearly implying that those think-tanks that question any part of the conventional climate change wisdom are tainted by their dependence on the oil industry. This fell well below the standards first set by Andreas, and which I had come to expect from The Independent.

In particular, your reporters wrote about a conference held in the US by the Heartland Institute last March, allegedly a “think-tank to have benefited from funding given by ExxonMobil in recent years”, stating that “A large British contingent was present at the event, with speakers including Dr Benny Peiser, from Lord Lawson’s climate sceptic think-tank, the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF)… and Professor David Henderson, a member of GWPF’s advisory council.”

  • Inquirygate: Official British Climategate e-mail review falling apart by John O’Sullivan, ClimateGate.com

    Article Tags: ClimateGate, John O'Sullivan

    Image Attachment
The so-called ‘Independent Climate Change Email Inquiry’ is unraveling faster than the man made global warming myth itself.

Within just a few days of its launch, this travesty has already been exposed as a sham. At least three of the five original panel members were found to be in cahoots with the warmist lobby on a rudderless ship skippered by hapless former University of Glasgow principal, Sir Muir Russell.

At the time of publishing this article two of the original crew members have jumped ship – last Thursday it was Dr Philip Campbell, this weekend Professor Geoffrey Boulton.. Who else will bail out?

An increasingly skeptic British press have quickly assailed the high moral ground to cast their eyes upon what may soon become the wreck of Sir Russell’s review.

The demise of Professor Boulton was instigated after an article appeared in Friday’s ‘The Scotsman,’ a respected national newspaper that broadsided Boulton for signing a petition to show his great confidence that global warming was caused by human-caused carbon dioxide emissions.

Even at the airport we can see some presence of the show, with ZTE having a tiny stand close to the check-out area.

Porsche GT3 R Hybrid on-track – Click above to watch video

Turns out that pics of the Porsche GT3 R Hybrid among all those snowbanks aren’t completely make-believe. The dual-powered racer takes its next turn in a promo video racing among those snow-powdered kerbs and a little CGI, but there’s no denying it’s a pretty mover. Follow the jump for the vid, and stay tuned for more comprehensive views of it from the Geneva Motor Show.

  • Personal Sleep monitor/alarm now ready for you

image Sleep is one of the most vital part of our day, it determines how we will act the whole day from angry from lack of sleep to energetic from a great nights rest, well this new application is here to assist. The application which has been done before by a major company for a high price has been recreated by an XDA member for no cost.

The application is a very simple application that does several things to determine your sleep patterns and rearrange when your alarm will ring to better your awakening. The application is still in beta and some people are already saying it works and is very simple.

The developer had this to say about it:

This is a beta application which monitors your sleep cycle, and sets a gently increasing alarm to go off at up to 30 minutes before your set alarm time (during your lightest sleep phase so that it’s easier to wake up fresh). If you are interested in testing it, please download and install the CAB here

Method of calculating lightest sleep phase: alarm can go off up to 30 minutes earlier than the set alarm time if you become more alert than you were at the lightest phase of the previous sleep cycle. If alarm does not go off early, as a failsafe it will always go off at the set time. The alarm does not affect any other alarms you may have set, so I would recommend setting some other alarm too as a failsafe.

If a better nights rest is what you have been searching for… then this application could be worth a try.

    Give it that try:XDA
