  • And Now The Jobs Bill Is In Trouble Too

    harry reid tbi

Just yesterday it looked like we were about to get some kind of “jobs bill,” and not only that it looked as though it might actually pass with bipartisan support.

    But no.

Under fire over the fact that the bill was widely seen as ineffective, Harry Reid abruptly changed the bill, slimmed it down, and now it seems as though support for it has completely vanished.

There seems to be a lot of political inside baseball, but it’s just more evidence of how paralyzed Washington has become even when it comes to tackling non-controversial measures like “jobs.”

Something will probably pass, and that something will probably be pretty ineffective.

  • Police warn of ATM scam in suburbs

Police throughout the suburbs are on the hunt for a tech-savvy thief who is rigging ATMs to swipe unsuspecting customers’ cash.

Addison detective Gregg Garofalo said the unidentified man affixes an electronic skimming device on automated teller machines to secretly snatch account information, then later makes withdrawals with the fraudulent cards he created.

So far, police suspect the criminal made unauthorized withdrawals at banks in Addison, Crystal Lake and Elk Grove Village. Similar crimes were reported last year in Buffalo Grove and Mount Prospect.

Garofalo released bank surveillance photos this week to try to identify his suspect, who made off with thousands since at least October, when detectives first began tracking him.

The skimming gadgets are tough to spot, experts warn, as they are designed to duplicate the actual ATM card reader and are installed in a matter of seconds right on top of the real thing. It’s attached by either a magnet or double-stick tape, but easily comes off if a customer checks before using the machine.

The device electronically records a customer’s debit-card number, and a small camera – which the thief posts nearby – records the ATM keyboard as the patron enters his password. The thief often is not far away, waiting to retrieve the data and transfer it to a fraudulent card.

Garofalo said the unidentified man recently made 17 fraudulent transactions within 14 minutes in Elk Grove Village.

“The victim usually finds out after they check their bank statement and notice the unauthorized withdrawal,” Garofalo said. “The victim never loses their debit card and does not know how this person got their information.”

Though Garofalo’s suspect hits banks, similar skimming scams are more typically carried out in obscure locations such as airports, convenience stores, gas stations, parking garages and other isolated spots where free-standing ATMs are installed.

“(Skimming devices) are hard to get a hold of and usually are expensive,” said Todd Carroll, a supervisory special agent for the FBI’s cyber squad in Chicago.

“Because they want to retrieve it, they’re going to put it someplace where they can make a good getaway. That’s more likely (in nonbank settings) where there’s less traffic and no surveillance cameras.”

Other recent examples of similar scams also are under investigation.

On Nov. 14, police said more than $70,000 was stolen from a bank ATM in Buffalo Grove. The bank’s security video recorded two suspects placing a camera and recording device on the ATM inside the lobby of the bank.

The same suspects returned two days later to retrieve the device, police said.

In Mount Prospect, thieves made off with nearly $21,000 from 316 debit card accounts after installing a skimmer last fall on a drive-up ATM at Bank of America.

Addison police, meanwhile, described their suspect as a black man, approximately 30 to 35 years old, who is always photographed wearing a white hat and sunglasses.

Anyone with information is urged to call Garofalo at (630) 543-3080, ext. 7361.

  • Despite ‘Big Brother’ barbs, Europe looking at pinpoint GPS car tracking

Navigation systems are quickly becoming commonplace even on the cheapest new cars and trucks, and the European Commission is working to use technology to make the systems far more accurate than the current technology allows. The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, or EGNOS, is already online in Europe, and the European Commission is encouraging navigation providers to utilize the technology to make directions far more accurate than they are now. As an example, Wards Automotive quotes sources who say EGNOS can improve the accuracy of nav systems from 10 to 20 percent versus nav systems without EGNOS.

Europe is also launching its new Galileo satellites, which also use EGNOS tech. Two are already operational and the plan is to have up to 18 satellites in space and 40 units to cover the world by 2017. The European Union is reportedly working on its own GPS tech so that it doesn’t have to rely on the U.S. military for data.

Improved navigation accuracy will make navigation users, providers and OEMs happy because directions will be more accurate, with fewer commands like “please make a legal U-Turn” in the middle of a freeway. Opponents to the measure fear that the government can begin tracking all GPS-enabled vehicles on the road. Speed trap cameras could theoretically be replaced, with satellites tracking your speed and whereabouts at all times. Will that ever happen? Who knows, but we’re thinking that even better-functioning GPS devices is a good thing.

  • Report: Volkswagen Amarok based SUV put on hold

According to an executive, Volkswagen has abandoned plans to make an SUV based on the Amarok pickup, which goes on sale next year in key markets including South America, South Africa and Australia.

Originally, Volkswagen had plans to build a Land Cruiser style 7-seater SUV based on the Amarok’s ladder-frame platform, but bosses are now waiting to see how the regional markets develop. Also, Volkswagen thinks that its SUV lineup has already become too saturated for another model.

“Across the group we already make the Touareg, the Cayenne, the Q7, the Q5 and Tiguan,” said Group financial boss Klaus-Dieter Schurmann. “That’s five cars in this class. You could say, do we really need another?”

Volkswagen is also pretty keen on bringing the Amarok to the U.S. market. However, before that happens the company will have to be sure it can sell at least 100,000 units of the pickup to make it feasible.

  • An Argument for Wanton Government Spending?

It irks me when politicos can’t see outside their own point of view to grasp that there are those that hold the opposing view as vehemently as they hold theirs…but as I read a post by Honest Partisan last night, I realized that I must be inadvertently doing the same thing.

I found myself shocked that he was cheering Big Government and finding fault with Obama’s purported discretionary spending freeze and was taking issue with Obama mentioning earmarks instead of driving the agenda that health care costs is what’s driving the deficit?! Not to mention saying ‘fiscally Conservative’ like it’s a bad thing? The entire post bothered me on a few different levels, but this thought in particular sums up my utter consternation with the other side of the aisle:

“….Macroeconomic illiteracy is a big political problem in this country, as voters buy the line that government should cut spending in hard times just like families do (the diametric opposite of what the government should do to bring back prosperity)…”

Reading through stuff at the DU or Kos never shocks me because those people are fringe, but when a person I respect (or worse a family member that I love) espouses views I deem so objectionable and baseless…it always bothers me for a few days.

  • Democrats Advising Obama to Be President Bush

Well, actually the exact words recently used by one Dem was that Obama should be “going Gangsta” on the Republicans…but then he said this, “Obama’s critics keep blasting him for Chicago-style politics. So, fine. Channel your inner Al Capone and go gangsta against your foes. Let ’em know that if they aren’t with you, they are against you, and will pay the price.” (souce)

Wasn’t this was they said Bush did and blasted him for? Didn’t Obama himself scold Bush over recess appointments? Oh please, go gangsta Mr. President. Going back on your word and dashing the possibility of the politics of change have been working so well for you thus far that I think you should continue… Do everything you chastised Bush for doing. Break even more campaign promises and then keep caving in on the things that will really piss off your base like adding troops and extending the Patriot Act.

While you’re at it Mr. President, maybe you should head over to the Democratic Underground and take some of the stellar advice being offered from your faithful… Like this: “How about changing the rules to only need a simple majority to pass legislation.” The American people should love that… Or “Start calling everything the Republicans do ‘un-American.’” That should accomplish a lot. (I did learn something in my DU snooping this time –they call their ‘Blue Dogs’ ‘Purple Snakes’ -they’re just too damn witty…)

We the people over here on the Right…we’ll just sit back and watch.

  • Giugiaro, Proton team up to make hybrid city car concept for Geneva

What you’re looking at here is the first picture of the new hybrid city car concept designed by Italdesign Giugiaro for Malaysian automaker Proton Cars. The concept, which will debut at the 2010 Geneva Show in March, is said to preview a production model.

The 5-door hatchback has room for four and measures 3,550mm in length. However, Giugiaro’s tag line of “How can you fit an SUV into a city car?” should give you a hint of how Proton and the Italian designer plan to maximize interior cabin room. Giugiaro says that the new hybrid city car concept is “set to revolutionize traditional segmentation in the car market” and “was developed with the aim of optimizing the available onboard space and car access ergonomics.”

The model sits higher than the traditional subcompact vehicle and is based on a Giugiaro-designed platform. It has a raised floorpan that accommodates the hybrid system’s lithium-ion batteries at the rear.

More details on the hybrid will be provided at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show – stay tuned.

  • Don’t Buy Into Any Reports On Q4 Online Ad Revenue Just Yet

In the last month or so, we heard a few different reports making the rounds claiming that “online advertising is back!” after lots of companies had great fourth quarters when it came to online ad revenues. The latest to report such a thing is the NY Times, who saw a big boost in online ad revenues in the fourth quarter, leading a bunch of people to wonder if maybe online ad revenue is taking off in a big way. While advertising has always been a cyclical market, and will certainly continue to grow, I think people are overreacting to Q4 of 2009.

Frankly, we saw the same thing here. While we don’t rely on ad revenue as the core of our business model, we do make money on advertising, and we had a great fourth quarter on that front, as advertisers were pumping tons of money into ads. But I don’t think it’s a sign of anything to get too excited about — and that’s because a lot of companies were really skittish earlier in the year, so I think a large chunk of Q4 online ad spending was a mirage. Here’s why:

The economy took a nosedive in the fourth quarter of 2008. By that point, lots of companies had already set their 2009 ad budgets, and had committed to at least a decent portion of what they planned to spend in Q1 of 2009. However, once the credit crunch went into overdrive, and there was all sorts of talk about how the world economy might collapse and we’d all be living in a post-apocalyptic Mad Maxian world, lots of companies hit the brakes, and didn’t want to commit to spending. A bunch of companies simply stopped spending on online advertising until they knew what was going on. Then, along came Q3, and suddenly the marketing VPs and directors realized they were approaching the end of the year, and still had huge chunks of money that had been budgeted in 2008 for 2009, but hadn’t been spent. And the way lots of companies do budgeting is that, if you haven’t spent it, you get less the next year. So, these marketing folks had to quickly spend the budgets they had meant to spread out over the entire year, and they dumped a bunch of it into online advertising, because it was quick and easy.

So, I don’t think that any of the Q4 reports you hear about concerning online advertising should be considered as an indicator of very much in terms of the future.

  • Weakest Links Drag Eurozone GDP Back Towards Recession

Eurozone GDP notably slowed in the fourth quarter of 2009, growing just 0.1% over the previous quarter.

Sluggish growth from major economies appears to have been dragged down by falling GDP in some of the weaker periphery economies.

Euro Stat: GDP increased by 0.1% in both the euro area (EA16) and the EU271 during the fourth quarter of 2009, compared with the previous quarter. ...In the third quarter of 2009, growth rates were +0.4% and +0.3% respectively.

European growth is pretty weak when compared to that of the U.S. during the same periods, based on the same data source (Euro Stat):

Euro Stat: During the fourth quarter of 2009, US GDP increased by 1.4% compared with the previous quarter, after +0.6% in the third quarter.

Here's where Europe appears to be markedly diverging from the U.S. -- industrial production looks as though it is now falling from its previously meek rebound:

Euro Stat Industrial Production Report: In December 2009 compared with November 2009, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.7% in the euro area (EA16) and by 1.9% in the EU272. ... Compared with 2008, the average production index for 2009 fell by 14.9% in the euro area and by 13.9% in the EU27. These estimates are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

  • Restaurant Promotes Valentine’s Day Sex in Its Bathrooms

    C281C56B-029E-4E45-98F4-BCB46897DDF4.jpg

If you’re feeling a little frisky on Valentine’s Day and just can’t wait to get home after the meal, one restaurant is encouraging you to get it on in its bathrooms. Mildred’s Temple Kitchen in Toronto, Canada has concocted a Valentine’s promotion to invite patrons to have sex in its unisex bathrooms.

While the restaurant’s promotional campaign doesn’t come right out and say it, their website doesn’t leave much to the imagination:

“Have you given any thought to moving beyond the bedroom?

Check out Mildred’s Sexy Bathrooms throughout the weekend of Big Love. You get the picture.”

Chef/co-owner Donna Dooher says the restaurant has regular trysts in its large, modern bathrooms, particularly during lingering weekday lunches.

The Toronto Public Health department has given its blessing to the promotion, saying that as long as the bathrooms are kept clean then the restaurant is not violating any health codes. Ahh, Canada – how enlightened. Something tells me public health departments in the United States would not put up with this.

Sexy or disgusting? You be the judge.

  • Gilles: Chrysler to emulate Apple, grown men will cry when they see new Chrysler 300

Since Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne cancelled his 2010 Chicago Auto Show speech to sign a production deal in Russia, the company’s chief design officer and the CEO of the Dodge Ralph Gilles stepped in to fill the void. During his speech, Gilles said that his hero is Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs and that Chrysler aspires to regain its own spirit of innovation by emulating the computer company.

Chrysler is known as the inventor of the minivan and the SUV segments.

Gilles provided the press with glimpses of future products like the next-generation Chrysler 300 sedan that will debut in December.

“Hopefully, when you see that car, grown men and women will have tears running from their eyes,” Gilles said. “Hopefully, when you see that, you will say, ‘Go, America.’ ”

Gilles said that Chrysler’s great heritage of inventing segments will be its main focus and that regaining that philosophy will not be enough for the company to succeed.

“The problem is that every one of those vehicles were one-hit wonders,” he said. “We can’t do that anymore. The philosophy at Chrysler is to do every vehicle that way.” He said that Chrysler wants to get away from putting out “me too” vehicles that look like everything else on the market.

  • Just Waking Up? You’ve Already Missed A Lot

    sunrise sun morning

With the US market increasingly taking its cues from Europe and China, the day is basically over by the time the opening bell rings at 9:30 in NYC.

Here’s a quick guide to what happened while you were sleeping.

    • German GDP growth came in quite weak raising fears of a double dip.
    • Overall Eurozone GDP growth was even weaker owing to negative growth in Spain and Italy.
    • There’s still no bailout for Greece.
    • The Euro is thus getting hammered.
    • China is raising reserve requirements.
    • The Australian Dollar is getting hammered, as the commodity rich country fears an export slowdown.
    • Indian growth is on fire.
    • Same too with Japan.
    • S&P futures are pointing lower, as are most commodity markets.

There's an interesting historical reason why it might be tough for Germany to play hardball with Greece  -- German-imposed Greek austerity has a charged past:

In the first year of the German occupation of Greece, austerity and "wage cuts" were imposed on the economy; at least 300,000 Greeks died of hunger. ... The IMF, on the other hand, can't override EU strictures on currency policy and on fiscal policy. Who then will play tough guy with Greece?

    greece strike

The fiscal situation of the so-called PIIGS is not the only issue prying the Euro apart, says SocGen’s famous uber-bear Albert Edwards.

    Bloomberg:

The problem for countries including Portugal, Spain and Greece “is that years of inappropriately low interest rates resulted in overheating and rapid inflation,” London-based Edwards wrote in a report today. Even if governments “could slash their fiscal deficits, the lack of competitiveness within the euro zone needs years of relative (and probably given the outlook elsewhere, absolute) deflation. Any help given to Greece merely delays the inevitable break-up of the euro zone.”

Unlike Japan or the U.S., Europe has an unfortunate tendency towards civil unrest when subjected to extreme economic pain,” Edwards wrote. Consigning the countries in southern Europe with the weakest finances “to a prolonged period of deflation is most likely to impose too severe a test on these nations.”

He’s won four Grammys, jams with blues legends, and has dated some of the best-looking women in show business. Nonetheless, the verbal diarrhea that continually spews from John Mayer’s mouth has us wondering if the guy has sh!t for brains.

Recent interviews in both Rolling Stone and Playboy have been both bizarre and baffling. Whether discussing past conquests, his proclivity for pulling his pud, or just blurting out racist nonsensical musings, Mayer seems hell bent on committing professional suicide.

In fact, Mayer may be the first singer-songwriter that could boost his career by shutting his mouth.

    Number

$20M – Value Mayer claims his vintage watch collection is worth.

You know what time it is? Time to get ill.

    Quote

“It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.”

    Mark Twain

adj. 1. Blunt: characterized by directness in manner or speech. 2. Hot dog. 3. Lloyd Wright.

    Fact

Mayer played the clarinet in middle school. It wasn’t until he was 13 and saw Michael J. Fox shred as Marty McFly in Back to the Future that he became interested in guitar. His dad rented a Washburn acoustic for him. Mayer never quit playing.

    The List

  • Industrial robot MOTOMAN-EA1800N

The heavy-payload, 6-axis EA1800 robot is specially designed for arc welding applications.
It is 15 percent faster and has higher allowable wrist moments than most welding robots providing an optimised welding performance.

Its internal cabling design streamlines the robot profile, improves access to welds and extends cable life. The EA1800N is also suitable for applications such as handling and dispensing.

By the expansion of the EA series with the MOTOMAN-EA1800N, a new industrial robot has been developed specifically for welding and also for activities such as handling or gluing. The application areas of the EA series are thus increased.

As with its predecessor models in the EA series, the complete media hose package is also lead through by the upper arm and the head axes of the robot which reduces obstructions and results in an expansion of the usable working range.

The EA1800N is the first handling robot which is equipped with internal media hose package – that makes it unique for your demands.

    The advantages at a glance:
Suitable for welding and handling activities – 15 kg payload
Maximum working range: 1.807 mm – Improved path behaviour
Better access to devices and components
