Just a couple of weeks ago, we had the chance to review the latest driving game from the venerable Need For Speed franchise, and found NFS Shift to be a worthy rival to the likes of Forza 3 and the upcoming Gran Turismo 5. The one thing it was missing? Ferraris. But a new downloadable content pack on Xbox Live aims to fix that shortcoming.

Available for download on February 16, the Ferrari Racing Pack features 10 absolutely drool-worthy Prancing Horses. Included in the package are the FXX, F50 GT, 599 GTB Fiorano, California, 575 Superamerica and five variants of the F430: Spider, Scuderia, 16M Scuderia Spider, Challenge and GTC.

The gamesmiths at Electronic Art have also devised an array of challenges designed specifically for these ten Maranello monsters, including hot laps, eliminators, endurance races and a world tour. The 46 challenges are included as well in the download pack, which costs $10 or 800 Microsoft Points. You’re also going to need a copy of the game, an Xbox 360 console and an Xbox Live account to make it happen. Full details are available in the press release after the jump, with a batch of screen shots in the gallery below.

  • Seth Godin Should Read His Own Book

I was really surprised to see an entry in my icerocket.com feed from Seth Godin saying that “

Mark Cuban Is Completely Wrong About Aggregators

I was particularly surprised because I am in the middle of reading his new book LinchPin which actually makes my point about why its a poor business move for newspapers and many others to be indexed by Google.

I love Seth, but in this article he is simultaneously wrong and hypocritical.  In the article, he makes my point very well when he says
” The person who chooses that information has power.”
What does he think newspapers do ? Randomly publish stories ? Randomly assign stories to writers and editors ? Of course not. The value in their brand comes from choosing stories, some of which come from 3rd parties and some of which they originate. By allowing themselves to be part of the Google Index or Google News, they become one of thousands of content options.  They transition the power of information selection from their newspaper brand to the aggregator brand. Thats just stupid.
As far as his Oprah example in the article (saying its like turning down a chance to be on Oprah when you remove yourself from an index), its ridiculous. If Google called a newspaper publisher and said they would highlight and promote their paper on Google’s homepage, then it would be analogous . When Oprah has you on the show, you are highlighted to her audience, not one of thousands of books on a  list.  Which is what happens when you are indexed by Google. You are one of thousands or more in a list with no declaration from google how you will be presented. Completely different than discussing with Oprah the time, day and show you will be on, and how the book would be presented and discussed.
Seth should re read his book Lynchpin and recognize that in this post industrial information age, if you are just one more entry in an algorithmically defined index, the index algorithm makes even the most amazing employee the digital equivalent of a 1909 Ford production worker. Ford didnt care if you were the most productive in the plant. Google doesnt care if you are the most valued brand in the index. They will assign their own value to you. You are just one more entry into an equation. An equation that you dont have access to . Thats about as close to Henry Ford’s 1909 plant as you can get.
To be amazing as an information originator, you must stand out and become indispensable. You must show that you dont belong in a list of books on Google, but rather highlighted and featured on the Oprah show.  If you cultivate and collect information, you must be your own aggregator, which a newspaper is, and through the value of your content, show your potential audience that you are amazing as an aggregator, cultivator and originator  and define to your audience why you are worth having to type a URL for rather than just being found in a search results page on Google
No question that search simplifies, but it also stupifies. Type in a word, find whatever Google finds for you. Trust in Google.  That worked well for a while Seth. But those were the good ole days.
In a world of social networks, if you are amazing and you stand out, people around you will tell others, who tell more people and your amazing product  becomes viral. Being indispensable to your community is incredibly valuable. You dont need to depend on people to search Google to find you. Your friends will help their friends find you through status updates, emails and notes. This social graph value  far exceeds the brick in the wall value of being in a search index, without making your brand secondary to the vampires who cycle you through their algorithms.
Read your book Seth :) .  Being algorithmic output is not being indispensable nor does it reflect amazing.

  • SWAZILAND: Dating in a Time of HIV

By Mantoe Phakathi MBABANE, Feb 10 (IPS) Jabulile Dlamini* is sweet sixteen and has never been kissed. And she is not expecting to be kissed any time soon or to even receive any gifts this Valentine’s Day.

While most of the girls in her class are excited about receiving presents from their boyfriends on February 14, Dlamini – who is HIV-positive – does not think she will get any.

She is reluctant to become involved in a relationship because of the complications her HIV-status will bring to it. But the secondary school student admits that she is not immune to love and is attracted to someone she goes to church with.

There is a spark in her eyes when she talks about her crush, a boy who has declared his love for her. However, the thought of having to disclose her status to him prevents her from declaring her true feelings to him.

"I’m worried that he might embarrass me by going around telling people about my status," says Dlamini.

"I think it’s fair to disclose your status to your boyfriend but I’m not sure how he will take it," she says. "Each time he proposes love I tell him that I can’t handle school and a boyfriend at the same time."

But she admits that is not the real reason because most girls her age have already had their first kiss.

According to the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS, 15,000 Swazi children are estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS and a majority of these children were born with the virus. Antenatal surveillance at clinics in Swaziland shows an increase in HIV prevalence among pregnant women from 39.2 percent in 2006 to 42 percent in 2008.

Dlamini’s friends at school also do not know about her status because she is worried about the stigma and discrimination that remains rife in Swaziland. Swaziland has the world’s highest infection rate. Almost 26 percent of the population between the ages of 15 to 49 are HIV-positive.

Dlamini only discovered her status six years after her HIV-positive father died.

"I had always been a sickly child and my mother took me to traditional healers but my condition did not improve," she says. "I had a bad rash all over my body and this affected my performance at school because I was absent most of the time."

Her father, a mineworker, died in 2001. But Dlamini’s mother believed her husband’s death and daughter’s subsequent illness were the result of witchcraft.

Dlamini’s mother kept taking her to traditional healers until their relatives advised her to seek medical help.

In 2007 mother and daughter were referred to the Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation-Swaziland (BCMCFS) for HIV counselling and testing.

Dlamini tested positive and her mother, a food vendor at Mbabane Market, was found to be HIV-positive as well.

"When the doctor told me that I was infected with HIV, I cried and asked my mother where I got it. She said I was born with the virus," says Dlamini.

She was only 13 at the time and was put on ART immediately. Thanks to extensive counselling, and joining the Teen Club at BCMCFS (where she still gets ART for free) Dlamini was able to accept that ‘living with HIV is not a death sentence’.

Officially opened in 2006, the BCMCFS provides a safe haven for children and young adults living with HIV. A total of 1,500 children are currently part of BCMCFS where they are counselled and tested, initiated on treatment and introduced to a support group. Upon realising that a generation of children born with HIV had become teenagers, BCMCFS started the Teen Club.

About 200 teenagers across the country are part of the Teen Club with two sites in the commercial and administrative capitals of Swaziland. Two more sites are yet to be set up in other regions in the country.

"The earlier children are made to understand their status, the better they deal with HIV/AIDS," says Dr Hailu Sarero, director of BCMCFS.

But dealing with these children is a big challenge for the BCMCFS because most of them are single or double orphans. Food security and dealing with abusive relatives are a bigger challenge, Sarero says.

"These are not easy issues and we partner with other organisations," says Sarero. "As an organisation, we can only do so much."

But for Dlamini, the organisation makes a big difference to her life. Once a month she meets with other teenagers living with HIV at the centre. Here adolescents living with the virus come together to talk about their concerns.

The club deals with a range of topics including how to take ARVs correctly; the pathology of the virus and how it is transmitted; dealing with disclosure to friends and peers; nutrition and HIV; and how to stay focused on one’s dreams.

"I have a friend at the Teen Club whom I’m comfortable to confide (in) especially about issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS," she says.

She says that being part of the club has also helped her gain a measure of confidence and she no longer shy around people. Although she is not ready for dating, she says that now she relates much better to the opposite sex than she did in the past.

"Interacting with a lot of children in my situation at the club has made me realise that I’m not alone in this situation," she says.

According to Dr Douglas Blank, the coordinator of Teen Club, HIV-positive children deal with intense issues at a very young age which is a major emotional strain for them.

"Teen Club offers a stigma-free environment to help them cope," says Blank.

Blank says all children go through the volatile adolescent stage, which is a complex transition from childhood to adulthood.

He explains that, while adolescents have to grapple with physical and emotional changes – demands of culture; gender; globalisation and poverty have pushed millions of adolescents to handling adult responsibilities.

"These challenges are compounded for adolescents living with HIV/AIDS," says Blank.

Most of the members of the club do not look their age because of stunted growth. Malnutrition is a serious challenge among HIV-positive children because, according to Blank, the body requires an increased amount of energy to fight constant illnesses common in children with HIV.

"In fact, most of these kids have not reached puberty because of HIV/AIDS," says Blank.

But Dlamini is heading towards it. She participated in a recent Teen Club weekend camp where discussions were held on the development of adolescents.

"After this experience, I realised that I’m like any other child and will go through the stages all children go through – that includes dating," she says with a mischievous smile.

Force India VJM03 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Force India: The Little Team That Could. After decades of racing as Jordan Grand Prix, the team changed hands several times over the past few years, first as Midland, then Spyker before Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya stepped in and took over. No one thought the tumultuous outfit had much fight left in it, but last season – the second under the Force India banner – the team took a shocking pole position, set the fastest lap and finished in second place at the Belgian Grand Prix, making for the best results the team (under any name) had seen since Giancarlo Fisichella won the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix in the Jordan-Ford EJ13.

To match last year’s success, however, Force India will have to push its way past Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren, all of which are fielding multiple world champions, to say nothing of a hungry runner-up Red Bull Racing, all the while fending off a field expanded by four new teams. This is the machine Mallya and company hope is up to the task.

F1 designers face a tough choice when laying the groundwork for a new car: It can either be a ground-up re-design, or an evolution of the previous year’s. Given Force India’s impressive results last season, chief designer Mark Smith went with the latter for the 2010 season. The biggest changes, like on the cars it will be competing with, is the larger gas tank to deal with the ban on fuel stops, and the double-diffuser design everyone’s running this season. The engine, once again, is provided by Mercedes-Benz, which powered the team last year and which will continue motivating both McLaren and world champion squad which the company acquired from Ross Brawn.

With Fisichella gone to Ferrari, the VJM03 will be piloted again by Tonio Liuzzi and Adrian Sutil. Former F3 Euroseries champion and DTM driver Paul di Resta, a Mercedes prodigy, has been retained as the team’s test driver following his earlier test for the team at Jerez. The VJM03 has already undergone its first test private run at Silverstone, and will be joining the next group session at Jerez shortly. Follow the jump for more details in the press release, and check out the high-res photos in the gallery below.

  • Online Gaming Store Lowers Prices 75%, Sees Sales Shoot Up 5500%

We were just talking about how some in the recording industry are realizing that raising prices on downloadable songs may have been a mistake (just as the book publishing world is pushing to raise ebook prices — despite a fair bit of evidence that people actually are expecting prices to go in the other direction). It’s as if they don’t understand price elasticity and how you can quite often maximize revenue by lowering price.

In the video game world, at least, they seem more open to this concept. Last year we wrote about Valve reporting on some numbers that showed the more they reduced the price, the greater the money they brought in. In the case of reducing the price by 75%, Valve found sales increased 1470%. Not bad! But apparently an online video gaming store in Sweden has them beat.

Rasmus Larsson points us to a report from an online gaming store that also reduced prices by 75% and saw sales increase by an astounding 5500% (Google translation from the original). A similar test, with a price decrease of 50% saw sales increase 533%. Interestingly, after each price decrease, the company put the price back up again and saw a (slight) sales increase at the higher price too. As the article notes “the price is marketing.”

  • Kia Ray Plug-in Hybrid Concept hints at future fuel-saving technologies for Kia

On the outside, the new Kia Ray Plug-in Hybrid concept looks like a giant bug – but that doesn’t matter because the main goal of the Ray is to communicate its fuel-saving and emissions-cutting technologies.

Power for the Kia Ray Concept comes from an all-aluminum 153-hp Gasoline Direct Injection 1.4L engine mated to a permanently-engaged fixed ratio CVT transmission. The setup is used in combination with a 78 kW electric motor, which is fueled by lithium-ion batteries.

On a full charge, the Kia Ray Concept can travel 50 miles, while the total range of the vehicle comes in at a whopping 746 miles. Kia says that in pure HEV mode, the Ray gets an estimated fuel-economy of 77.6 mpg and 202.3 mpg in plug-in HEV mode. Top speed is clocked in at 109 mph.

Also helping increase the fuel-efficiency of the Ray is the overall exterior made up of lightweight and recycled materials, as well as hexagonal roof-top solar cells that are embedded in the glass roof panel to power extra lighting or climate control systems.

No word on how soon we’ll see the these technologies embedded into Kia’s lineup.

    Kia Ray Plug-in Hybrid Concept:

    Press Release:

Kia Motors ‘Ray’ Plug-in Hybrid concept debuts in Chicago

Kia Motors has unveiled its ‘Ray’ Plug-in Hybrid concept at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, show-casing its innovative fuel-stretching and emissions-cutting technologies.

Following the Kia Borrego Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), the Forte LPI Hybrid, the petrol Kia cee’d Hybrid and the twin-turbo diesel Kia Sorento Hybrid, the ‘Ray’ concept is a bold new collaboration between design and engineering and inventively showcases a futuristic four-seat compact sedan based on the Kia Forte platform.

Designed with lightweight and recycled materials, as well as hexagonal roof-top solar cells embedded in the glass roof panel to power extra lighting or climate control systems, the Kia ‘Ray’ boasts a range of up to 1,200 kilometres (746 miles).

“It is important to imagine early in the design process what people will want in the future from a green perspective because people want to reduce their carbon footprint without driving carbon copies,” said Peter Schreyer, Chief Design Officer for the Kia Motors Corporation.

“Being green doesn’t have to be an obvious statement anymore and the Kia ‘Ray’ exemplifies a viable blend of modern, eco-minded features for today’s environmentally conscious consumers,” he added.

The stylish, aerodynamic ‘Ray’ combines design and engineering for maximum efficiency, incorporating clean, flush surfaces minimizing any unneeded edges, a flowing profile and a pronounced rear shoulder ending in a slightly higher deck for reduced drag.

The ‘Ray’ also features touch-screen controls, drive-by-wire steering, ‘cool-glazing’ solar glass and a lithium-polymer battery – all possible indicators of future technology from Kia. As a plug-in hybrid, ‘Ray’ is designed to cover driving distances of more than 80 km (50 miles) using just its electric motor on a single charge, and has a fuel economy rating of only 1.398 l/100 km (202 mpg) and a total range of 1,200 km (746 miles).

    Striking Aircraft-Inspired Exterior Design

A lowered mono-volume shape and a strong, curvaceous silhouette give the Kia ‘Ray’ concept better aerodynamic properties than taller profile hybrid vehicles.

Strong, lightweight materials are used to support the EcoDynamics philosophy starting with a tabbed LED Kia badge covered with a single piece of glass that extends over the hood and another piece of glass that extends from the cowl of the windshield to the rear header to offer occupants a spacious, airy feeling.

A tapering greenhouse cabin and a longer ‘tail’ improve aerodynamics while reduction of drag is attained through a one-piece, smooth-as-glass, integrated underbody panel, narrow tire width and flush wheel design.

Front driving lamps slide back to create openings for better air intake when the petrol engine is being used and a sliding U-shaped deck-lid extends from the rear of the vehicle at higher speeds for improved coefficient of drag.

Instead of side-view mirrors and door handles, motion-detector cameras are mounted flush with the body for safe lane changing procedures and opening of doors. The result is an airframe on wheels. The front door opening features a forward cutout design for the feet allowing ease of entry. The purposeful rear-hinged coach doors add a stylish touch and their height and shape improves entry and exit.

The ‘Ray’ employs new ‘cool car’ technology, including nano-laminate films and cool-glazing materials to dramatically reduce solar heat and demonstrate how keeping the interior cool will reduce air conditioning loads and greenhouse emissions. When the vehicle is parked in the sun, the solar cells provide a trickle charge that helps operate a cooling fan to reduce interior temperatures.

    Light and Airy Interior

The ‘Ray’ interior is comprised of eco-friendly recycled materials in cool white tones to create a sense of purity while also reflecting the heat of the sun, keeping the temperature down and reducing the use of air conditioner energy. Front and rear seats made of light-weight composites, mounted on the side sills, create a floating effect in the cabin and utilize elastomeric materials to support body weight.

Fresh and sustainable trim materials combine with a lightweight touch screen instrument layout featuring a touch screen push-button start and gear shift toggle. The centre console features the all-new Kia UVO powered by Microsoft® advanced infotainment system providing voice- and touch-activated controls for simple management of music files and hands-free mobile phone operation.

Adding to the list of green technology features ‘Ray’ also employs the all-new GreenEdge™ system by Infinity® Audio. The loudspeakers reduce power consumption and dissipation through lower self heating temperatures coupled with increased acoustic performance providing a better synergy between amplifier, speaker and vehicle. The amplifier used also reduces the idle power consumption by 50% of current Infinity speakers and employs a lower dissipation design for significant savings in overall weight.

To reduce overall weight through materials and design the hexagon/honeycomb shape can be found throughout the cabin, used as a repeated design element while tying the interior theme together. Used also in the door inserts and seats, this lightweight and breathable mesh serves to reduce overall kerb weight as well as being a unique design element.

Other materials found in the cabin are soft to the touch with a matt finish, including white leather, offering a more luxurious, but inviting and tranquil atmosphere.

    Hybrid Architecture

The ‘Ray’ Concept is designed to be powered by an all-aluminium 153-horsepower Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) 1.4-litre engine mated to a permanently-engaged fixed ratio Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), used in combination with a 78 kW electric motor.

Depending on driving conditions, power is sent to the front wheels from the petrol engine, the electric motor, or both together.

The ‘Ray’ is equipped with an engine-power saving alternator management system and a toggle gear-shift indicator to encourage economical driving. Custom-designed low-rolling resistance tyres featuring a hexagon tread pattern in narrow (195/50R20) 20-inch diameter construction, also improve efficiency.

  • The Emperor’s New Clothes: Pagani C9 prototypes snapped in South Africa with fresh sheet metal

There’s only so much testing that an automaker can undertake behind closed gates before the prototypes need to hit the open road. Consequently, automakers continue to devise all manner of camouflage and body cladding to keep prying eyes from seeing what they’re working on. Horacio Pagani, however, seems to have a different approach. The independent Italian-Argentine purveyor of top-shelf supercars simply slaps the old bodywork on the new prototype and – presto! – nothing to see here. That is, until these shots came along.

Up until now, the prototypes for the Zonda’s replacement that we’ve seen in spy shots have been all but completely indistinguishable from the existing model. But these shots – snapped in Johannesburg, South Africa – show entirely different bodywork around the rear end.

The big, protruding rear wing is gone, for starters. The tail-lamps, which were horizontal, rectangular units mounted low down on the existing Zonda, have been replaced by three-light clusters higher up. The squared-off mesh grille has been ditched in favor of an elliptical opening and the high-mounted barrel of exhaust tips, missing from recent prototypes, is back on this one. And that snorkel of an intake likewise protruding from previous prototypes is gone here, replaced by a more form-fitting vent behind the rear windscreen.

Unfortunately the snapper couldn’t seem to get ahead to snap the front end, but the bodywork along the side flank appears more curvaceous as well, as does the greenhouse. The pair of test mules were apparently being escorted by a pair of Mercedes SLS AMGs, as the Benz performance division will once again be providing the Pagani’s motivation.

KENNEWICK — Energy producers and suppliers are optimistic about their long-term future in Washington, but are concerned about shortages of skilled workers and developing adequate training programs for them, according to a survey of energy employers.

Growth in the clean energy industry depends on the state’s ability to train workers who need to be a “jack of all trades” to build, operate and maintain plants and equipment, said Alan Hardcastle.

He’s senior research associate with Washington State University’s Extension Energy Program and author of a 2009 report on renewable energy and work force development in the state.

Hardcastle moderated a panel Tuesday on renewable energy jobs during the 10th Harvesting Clean Energy Conference, which wound up three days of meetings at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.

Young people are interested in careers in the renewable energy industry, he said, and are excited about the technology and the chance to have a so-called “green” job.

Energy industry careers include mechanics, millwrights, linemen, power plant control operators, electricians, technicians and engineers.

But employers who were surveyed said they felt core skills of prospective workers are often lacking, including academic, problem-solving and critical thinking.

Don Guillot, business manager for IBEW Local 77 and a panelist, said the study was “a wakeup call. We are really late getting started.”

Teaching someone to become a skilled worker, such as an electrician, takes time, he said.

“You can’t make a journeyman in two weeks,” Guillot said. “It takes in our industry three years to be a safe, competent worker.”

Jack Baker, vice president of business services for Energy Northwest, said the energy industry needs to know the kinds of workers it will need in the long term. That’s why the nation “needs a clear energy policy,” he said.

A 2009 National Commission on Energy Policy report, “Taskforce on America’s Future Energy Jobs,” highlighted the need to develop and train younger workers to replace skilled retiring employees.

Of the between 120,000 to 160,000 electric power workers who will be eligible for retirement by 2013, about 58,200 will be skilled crafts workers and another 11,000 are engineers, the report said.

Washington community and technical colleges are offering degree programs to train skilled workers, with each institution focusing on a specialty to avoid duplication.

Columbia Basin College in Pasco, for instance, offers a nuclear technology degree, while Walla Walla Community College focuses on wind power.

About 16 students are enrolled in Walla Walla’s wind technology program, said Mindy Stevens, the college’s vice president of instruction, workforce education.

  • Michigan Attorney General says no deal with feds on Asian carp

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.  — Michigan’s attorney general says the Obama administration offered to settle a legal dispute over how to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes, but no deal was reached.

Mike Cox said he and attorneys general from five other states had a conference call Wednesday with a U.S. Department of Justice lawyer.

Cox told reporters he couldn’t provide details of the talks because they were confidential negotiations toward a possible settlement.

But he said the federal government offered no changes in its $78.5 million strategy released Monday.

That plan rejects Michigan’s demand to close two shipping locks in Chicago waterways that could provide an opening to Lake Michigan for the invasive carp.

Cox said his state’s Supreme Court lawsuit on the matter will continue.

  • Fire destroys Olympia Fields home

OLYMPIA FIELDS  — An Olympia Fields house was destroyed by fire in the early morning hours Wednesday.

The fire broke out in the front section of the two-story frame dwelling in the 2400 block of Vollmer Road, in the south suburb, Matteson Fire Chief Patrick Gericke said.

The owner of the house was the only one home at the time of the fire. He escaped without injury and refused treatment, Gericke said.

The call came in just before 1 a.m., but the house was well involved by the time firefighters arrived. Gericke said snow on the road slowed efforts by firefighters getting to the scene.

There is fire damage throughout the house, which is uninhabitable, Gericke said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

  • Report: Audi A1 to spawn five-door, convertible, S variant

2011 Audi A1 – Click above for high-res image gallery

It should come as no surprise that Audi will offer a number of different variants of its new A1 compact hatch. What is surprising (kinda) is that the forthcoming S1 will be the first modern, performance-focused Audi to lack all-wheel drive.

According to Autocar, Audi intends to sell 100,000 A1s annually and to pull off those kind of numbers, it will have to diversify. Included in the plan is a five-door version, similar to the A1 Sportback concept seen in Paris, that’s likely to ditch the contrast roof rails in favor of a more traditional top. The wagon will likely hit dealers abroad this time next year (production version in Paris?), with the same combination of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines as the three-door model.

A convertible version will likely arrive in 2012 with a fabric roof and 2+2 seating, with the S1 variant landing around the same time. When the S-ified A1 hits the market, it’s likely to only be available in three-door form, packing a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-pot boosted to around 180 hp and sending power to the front wheels through Audi’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. If you’re disappointed by the lack of Quattro, don’t be – the S1 won’t make it to the U.S. anyway.

  • Today’s snowfall breaks records

CHICAGO — A storm that buried parts of Illinois in nearly a foot of snow and grounded hundreds of flights was crawling east early Wednesday, leaving behind strong winds that safety officials warned would create a dangerous morning commute.

Tuesday’s official snowfall of 12.6 inches set a record for snow on any single day in February for Chicago.

Travel on area roads was hazardous with numerous areas of “black ice”, WBBM’s Bart Shore reported.

Airlines are not reporting delays Wednesday morning because of improved weather conditions — but cancellations continue, according to a city Dept. of Aviation release.

More than 300 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport and more than 150 were canceled at Midway Airport as the winter storm moves east, according to the release, which said that as of 7:30 a.m., airlines at both airports continue to proactively cancel flights.

Southwest Airlines will resume its schedule at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the aviation release.

As of 5:30 a.m., the city of Chicago had shifted its full main fleet of 275 snow fighting trucks to the city’s side streets.

Scores of schools were closed and travelers were stranded statewide following a storm that forced airlines to cancel more than 700 flights and bus companies to close all routes in and out of Chicago on Tuesday.

Drifting snow and low visibility concerns prompted the Illinois Department of Transportation to urge motorists to use public transportation if possible on Wednesday.

“We do expect (Wednesday) morning to be very slow moving,” IDOT spokeswoman Marisa Kollias said late Tuesday, when snow was still falling in northern and central Illinois.

“I don’t think the visibility will change all that much from now.”

Forecasters said the storm would be out of the state by morning rush hour, but wind gusts of up to 30 mph could stir up snow and impede visibility.

The Chicago Department of Aviation reported more than 600 canceled flights at O’Hare International Airport with delays averaging 30 minutes Tuesday night.

Southwest Airlines stopped Chicago service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, canceling more than 140 flights in and out of Midway Airport.

Airline spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said service could resume at late Wednesday morning, depending on the weather.

Greyhound canceled bus service from Chicago to Des Moines, Indianapolis, Memphis, Milwaukee and Omaha on Tuesday. Amtrak reported no immediate Chicago-area cancellations.

Gilson in Knox County reported more than 7 inches of snow by late Tuesday, while Decatur, Champaign and Urbana saw about 6 inches. But most of central Illinois reported between 4 to 5 inches.

“We had two fronts coming together – one from the southwest and the other one out of Minnesota – and that made it a very slow storm over Illinois,” Dan Kelly, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Lincoln, Ill., said of the storm that began Monday night.

“But the fronts are consolidated now, and it will pick up speed and intensity as it moves toward the East Coast.”

Snow and ice was affecting most interstate roadways north of Effingham late Tuesday afternoon, according to the Transportation Department.

Spokeswoman Paris Ervin said crews were having some trouble clearing the roads.

“With high winds comes blowing and drifting snow, which can be a challenge for our snow plow operators,” Ervin said.
