  • PlinkArt

PlinkArt is an app for identifying, discovering and sharing art. The coolest feature of PlinkArt is instant art identification. Just snap a photo of a painting, and our servers will identify it! Plink is good for browsing too. Explore by timeline, leave comments, share your discoveries with friends.

    Price: Free

    AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

    Pros & Cons:

    Pros

    • Visual search for artwork, identifies some artwork by camera phone picture taken
    • Browse artists by Timeline and Genre
    • Discover, share, comment and buy reprints of artwork

    Cons

    • I personally would like to see the app identify present day or even less known artists and artwork

    Features:

PlinkArt Android App is a cool way to visually search artwork by taking a picture of the artwork via the phone’s camera. Also browse and discover artists and artwork by Timeline and Genre. Learn more about the artist via Wikipedia information, Comment on an artist, Share via email and sharing apps installed on your phone, or Buy reprints from AllPosters.com.

Personal Gripe: I love art and wish PlinkArt could identify more present day artwork and artists. It seems understandable what it does recognize, but tends to only recognize legendary artists and their work. Maybe now that Google has acquired PlinkArt and will incorporate the technology into Google Goggles, Google’s scale and possible new tools offered to the art community may give this enhancement in the future.

    PlinkArt Art Close-up
PlinkArt Browse Art by Timeline and Genre
    PlinkArt Search Using a Photo
    PlinkArt Sharing Options
PlinkArt Buy Poster Reprints from AllPosters.com

    Usefulness:

The app is really handy and scores cool points versus being useful, I say that because if you’re in a major art museum this app will impress you with it’s accuracy. However will not find artists or artwork that are not legendary.

    Ease of Use:

There are several ways to discover art; either take a picture of it, type the search or let the app show you something at random. A another cool feature is the Timeline which shows popular genres by year on the timeline which you can filter down.

    Frequently Used:

Art connoisseurs and enthusiasts with Android phones will love it however not for everyone.

  • UK TV Guide

UK TV Guide features: 3 day’s listings, 3 view modes: Matrix, Channel Listing and Hour Listing, Program description and reminder, Refined and Favourite channels, Program Searching, Send program info via Email/SMS/Twitter.

    Price: Free

    AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

    Pros & Cons:

    Pros

    • Superb reminder and sharing functionality

    Cons

    • Difficult to use
    • Ugly as that girl in school whose name you forget but you remember she’s really ugly

    Features:

    The Bad

Into the crowded market place of iffy television guides comes the UK TV Guide to revolutionize…………. nothing at all. As with all its competitors the UK TV Guide does some individual things well, really well in some places, but is fatally flawed in others. If someone cherry picks all the best features from these different guides and wraps it all up in an app that doesn’t appall me with its ugliness then I will be sold. Unfortunately I am still waiting.

Upon starting up the app you are invited to specify your favourite channels from a frankly enormous list full of channels you hadn’t heard of. The ‘Blighty’ channel for instance, is probably a load of crap though of course no one would know since no one watches it. For me this process took a quite some time and forced my HTC Hero to crash on multiple occasions.

Luckily you only have to do this once. After that time the app home screen changes to show your channels listed vertically down the side with a time line and the channels’ schedules stretching along the x-axis. All the programmes that have already finished are grayed out to show that they are in the past. A nice little feature this.

There is a date cell in the top left corner showing the current date and when pressed allows you to inspect your channels’ schedules for the next two days. This is pretty good but I would have preferred to be able to check out the whole week’s listings. In truth I had to read through the included instructions for the app to know how to do this. If I have to read instructions to get a TV guide to work properly, then the designers have done something wrong.

Clicking (pressing?) the channels thumbnail takes you to a page which shows you the entire day’s listings for that particular broadcaster. A pretty handy feature but I would question why it is displayed with coloured text on a black background unlike every other page in the app. This admittedly may be a small and personal issue but I like my apps to have a thread of uniformity running through them. From this page, or indeed on any other page of the app you can click on an individual program to get more detailed information and set a reminder. The problem here is that the text can be incredibly small on a channel page which makes it very finicky to get the right show. There is no zoom function at all.

    The Good

The reminders are pretty great on this app. You can set them to alert you from the notifications bar of your phone or integrate the notification into your Google calendar. It would be nice to be able have both but that might just be me.

I’m a member of the camp that thinks Facebook and Twitter integration is overdone and normally pretty useless. However this app gets it absolutely right. When setting a reminder you also have the option to send it with the aforementioned social networks (obviously) but also with Evernote and other installed blogging apps.

There is an amazingly useful search function which even auto-completes your searches and takes you directly to the program info. Seriously seriously awesome.

    UK TV Guide Home Screen
    UK TV Guide Channel Info
    UK TV Guide Program Info

    Usefulness:

This is about as useful as a TV guide can get in that it allows you to plan a lot of TV watching. Go figure huh? Still, I can’t get past the fact that I usually need to check a channel’s output more than two days in advance.

    Ease of Use:

This is a serious problem for this app. I had to read the instructions to figure out how to squeeze all the functionality out of it. I only found out that you could change the schedule date in the app by doing this. Not good at all.

    Frequently Used:

This might have been my favoured TV guide but………….. see below.

    Interface:

Oh man. If apps actually existed in the eighties then this would remind me of one those crappy looking apps you got in the eighties. When scrolling along the timeline on the home screen….wait, that’s not right. You don’t scroll. You just swipe, wait for what seems like an ice-age to pass and then the screen changes. What’s wrong with a smooth scrolling timeline? When pressing on a programme the app gives you no feedback as to where you have pressed. There are no animations, transitions or colour changes to show that a button has been depressed. It’s like the early days of touchscreens all over again.

  • Google: Froyo has Fastest Mobile Browser but Flash Slows it Down [Video]

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtGCaKyd_co

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TZe8dElMGU

PocketNow.com performed a series of mobile web browser speed tests between Android 2.2 (Froyo) on Nexus One, Safari on iPhone 3Gs and Opera 10 on HTC HD2 and showed overall Google’s claim that Froyo’s browser is the “fastest mobile web browser” may be true most of the time if you have Flash turned off.

Flash 10.1 beta for Android does give you more of a desktop experience however at the expense of slower page load, as the browser continues to load Flash content, as well as scrolling becomes choppy. Hopefully Adobe improves this and not give Apple more justification and ammunition in their spats.

  • True Hands-Free Driving and Bluetooth Voice Dialing is in Android 2.2

I’m so stoked the Android 2.2 software update started rolling out (for Nexus One owners only, plus you can manually install if you don’t want to wait). In checking out all the new features I accidentally stumbled across true hands-free Bluetooth voice activated dialing in native Froyo without a third party app (which is lacking in Android). This is great as many states govern you cannot operate the phone  to start a call while driving but a one-hand one-touch initiation is acceptable.

How to Operate Hands-Free Driving via Bluetooth Voice Dialer in Android 2.2:

Simply press the button on your Bluetooth earpiece, the Bluetooth Voice Dialer app launches and asks you “Speak Now…”, you say “Call John Smith” and it calls the default number you’ve saved. You can also say “Call John Smith at Work” if you have multiple numbers stored. If the app doesn’t hear which number of many you may have stored, it asks which, then you can clarify and it dials. You do not need to touch the phone at all.

We have be getting a lot of inquiries on this issue in our “Ask NerdGirl” Android questions column and finally Google’s Android will be able to support it. So as more Android phones start to get the latest update, you Californians can be legal an safer!

  • Android Developers: Move App to SD Card Feature in Android 2.2 Requires You

This is a PSA to Android Developers. Some of us lucky folks are enjoying Android 2.2 on our Nexus One phones. :P We want to take advantage of “Move App to SD Card” feature in the software build but run into a snag as Google made it so developers have to enable the feature. So virtually no app is available for this as the SDK only became available last week.

I, we, understand why they have done this as some developers may not want to have their app running from SD Card which could possibly lead to piracy. But

So I, we, emplore you to get the new SDK and get those apps updated so we can download and buy more of your apps and games. Game developers, now is the prime time to build and sell us those high-end 3D games as we now have a minimum of 2 gigabytes to play with!

  • From The Source: HTC, All Released Phones in 2010 to Receive Android 2.2

Google’s conference is over and as you may have expected the official news of Android Froyo 2.2 was announced. With the announcement came the not so surprising news that Google’s flagship phone the Nexus One would be the first with the update, followed by the Motorola Droid, and….

The purpose for the drop off is to show that no one knows who will receive the coming update of Android, especially after carriers such as Sprint just updated their line of Android devices to the almost mundane 2.1 firmware. Not to worry HTC lovers and users across the lands and seas; fear not about updates to 2.2, for HTC has silenced rumors and speculation before it has a chance to begin by saying that all phones released in 2010 will receive the update, namely the Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Desire, and the My Touch 3G Slide.

All phones before this and those that just received the update to 2.1 were failed to be mentioned. This story however gives some light and possible truth to the rumored out of the box over the air update of the HTC EVO 4G.

  • What’s New in Android 2.2 (Froyo)

Once I heard the Nexus One could manually get Android 2.2 (Froyo) update I installed it immediately! Here’s a list of new feature enhancements in addition to those from announcement for Android 2.2.

    Featured Enhancements

    • No Flash initially installed however you download it from the Android Market.
    • Wi-Fi tethering and Portable Hotspot!!!
    • Updated Google Search bar to include dropdown for All, Web, Apps or Contacts search. Plus choose which items are searchable… not just those previously mentioned yet specific apps; Messaging, Twitter, Music, etc.

    System, Hardware and Settings

    • There are now different color highlights for the trackball. Initially it would either do white or blue when using Bluetooth. Now any color can be used, typically set within apps if the feature is available.
    • I’m not sure what to call this memory, but usually when I kill apps using apps like Taskiller there is between 30-75MB of memory that can be freed up. Now it’s up to 218MB.
    • Phone and Browser quick launch are along side the app launcher.
    • Personalized search results saved to your Gmail profile.
    • Can allow offensive words in voice recognition settings.

Core Apps: Gmail, Contacts, Messaging, Facebook, Market, Talk, Car Home

    • Updated Market with auto-update settings, update all apps feature, and updated layout.
    • Updated Gmail app to finally include Previous/Next buttons when reading emails (shame that simple feature was just now implemented). Plus jump between accounts by tapping the email address in header versus pressing Menu button then tap Accounts.
    • Finally no dark theme in Messaging & Google Talk apps, slight face lift.
    • Contacts with multiple similar calls grouped together which can be toggled to show more detail.
    • More Settings in Camera app; Focus Mode, Store location in photo metadata, White Balance options, toggle Flash, Zoom options. For Video; Color effects (Mono, Sepia, Negative, Posterize, etc), White Balance, toggle Flash, toggle Video Quality (even a custom setting for high quality for YouTube capped at 10 minutes).

Google announced today the Android Market has more then 50,000 Android Apps. • Android 2.2: Install Android Apps to SD Card

One of the plagues of using Google’s Android platform was the inability to install Android apps and games to the SD Card versus internal memory storage; with the official announcement of Android 2.2 this feature will come standard. By default, apps will continue to be installed on internal memory storage, however a quick visit to the list of applications in the Settings menu offers one touch to move the app to SD Card. Thus they are playable just fine from the SD Card. Now user storage for apps and games will only be limited to the storage of the SD Card purchased.

  • The New Android Market is Coming Soon [Success]

In the past as we and every other user of the current Android Market has experienced major [Fail] in the experience. However in Google’s preview of Android 2.2, there is a new Android Market coming to offer more than the iTunes-like experience we have been begging for. Why do we even want an iTunes-like app store experience, why not go beyond that for a Web experience? The new Android Market will allow you to sign in, search all 50,000+ Android Apps and actually download them wirelessly not only to your phone, tablet, TV… let’s just say device as the list will go on!

In the demo today at Google I/O 2010 we saw apps being downloaded from the Web as well as music from iTunes library able to be streamed to the phone irrelevant of DRM-protection. The Android Market on the phone will have a few enhancements as well with ability to update all applications versus individually, automatic updates so you don’t have to bother at all, apps can be installed to SD card obviating one of the largest pains many Android users have experienced with low internal memory storage. This comes with Android 2.2 software update.

    • Cloud to Device Messaging. Vic G, the presenter at Google I/O, took a shot at Apple with saying “That’s how you do cloud to device API”. Referring to Apple’s workaround to multi-tasking. This awesome feature will allow you to download Android apps from the new Android Market (coming soon) on the web to multiple devices; phone, tablet, TV, etc.
    • Tethering & Portable Hotspot. I don’t know how the carriers will feel about this as they would like to charge more for the service (as we see with the HTC Evo 4G for Sprint tacking on $29.99/mo. for HotSpot capability). But the feature will have native and easy support!
    • Flash. Android 2.2 will fully support Flash 10.1 natively. Whoo Wooooo!
    • Install Android Apps to SD Card. This has been long cry from consumers to have the ability to install Android apps to SD Card instead of internal memory storage. To date, devices do not offer more than 1 gigabyte, on average 256MB for app and game storage. Jumping this hurdle and allowing storage on the SD card instantly allows up to 32GB of storage for some users.

Developers please go download the SDK, make use of new technologies innovating new apps for us to review, try and buy in preparation for when the software is available for consumer phones. I can’t wait until someone flashes the ROM for root users… Cyanogen???
