Features:

Informant Android App is a stealthy way to record conversations using your Android phones. It does not record voice conversations while in a phone call, if you want that feature try Google Voice by pressing #4 on dial pad (limited to incoming calls only). This app is more for secretly recording a conversation speak-phone style. Note: if your recorded subject is far away, recording volume will reflect. You can set the app to record a specified amount of time during a set period of time, or record immediately. It works while the phone is sleep. Recordings can be played back and can be sent email. Even place a PIN code password in the case you get busted recording, the evidence would have to be locked.

Usefulness:

Most all use cases I can think of for the app seem to have some legal agenda attached (either that or busting your mate). If using the app for those purposes please check your state and Federal laws as the recording may not be permissible in court. I recently recommended it to a friend whose employer was harassing her behind closed doors.

Ease of Use:

Easy. Choose to either schedule recordings or record now.

Google I/O is just a few days away! Of course it starts the same day I’ll be taking a train from Cleveland to New York so I’ll be having some fun testing tethering apps along the way. Seems fitting that the first question of the week has to do with Google!

Google Voice 0.3.3: Do you know when Google is gunna release this version and what it will add?  I Use this app all the time! I Love it!

The last update was March 23^rd. It finally pushed the notifications almost instantly. I was excited to see that. Judging by how Google I/O is next week and they’ve recently updated Maps, Goggles, the mobile sites, image search, and place pages, and now they’re about to officially release Android 2.2 (Froyo), I can’t imagine it’s too long before we see another update to Voice. It seems that they’re really working hard on the mobile end of things and I love it!

Zxing’s Bar Code scanner wants to access the browser history, bookmarks read/write contact data-why? Where are all the tech privacy advocates on this-not a single article that I’ve seen.

Why do I only see QR bar code links [on all the Android app sites] that only point to Google’s Android Market, when they could simply provide a link to the apk?

Think about it, if you don’t want to give access to your history and contacts, you wouldn’t have the means to scan the QR code right?

I know this was answered by AndroidTapp Admin Man himself, but I wanted to put my two cents into this as well.

When I first started downloading apps I noticed these permissions too. Why does my camera app want to know my phonebook? Why does Key Ring need to know my GPS location? And of course why would my barcode scanner need my browser history? You need to consider what the app is really doing.

Let’s go through the Barcode Scanner as an example:

Modify/delete SD card contents – You can save scanned barcodes and retrieve them later. These are saved to the SD card. You can also delete the barcodes when you no longer need them so that is why it can delete.

Read Browser’s history and bookmarks – You can actually send a QR code of a bookmark or a recently visited page to someone. Therefore, the app needs to access this information.

Read contact data – You can send a code using the built in share feature. This enables the program to get your contacts so you can share it.

Write contact data – When you send something, if you send it to someone that isn’t in your phonebook, it will save the data for you to insert later.

Full Internet access – When you scan a barcode, not only does it go to the market, but it could go to a page to compare prices or a website for a company.

Take pictures – The app uses the camera built into the phone to take a picture of the barcode.

Control flashlight – If you have a flash built in you can turn it on so you can scan a barcode easier in low light.

Control vibrator – When a barcode is scanned you can have it vibrate when it is found.

So, just because an app looks like it does one thing, it may have the option to do even more. Yes, be wary of what you download and it is always a good idea to check what it has access to, but 99% of the time, it’s there for a reason.

Is there a site that is capable of streaming movies to my Droid? Without adobe flash it seems impossible.

Skyfire Mobile Browser – allows you to view some Flash videos directly from the browser.

Androrb – This is not exactly what you’re looking for, but I like it. With an Orb account and Orb running on your computer you can stream the videos you have on your computer onto your phone. They don’t need to be on the same network, which is really nice, and the quality isn’t the worst. Best part, it’s free!

SPB TV – With this app you can watch live streaming broadcasts from around the world. The free version only allows you to watch 6 channels, but the full version gives you over a hundred. The paid version is $9.95.

Stream Media Player – This app allows you to watch Internet video, listen to Internet radio, and watch web cameras. It also is a media player for your local media files.

I haven’t used SPB TV and Stream Media player extensively, but it can’t hurt to try them out. Now Hulu just needs to make an app…

Impact Teen Drivers, a California-based nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives, have partnered with OTTER App, an Android App geared towards curbing the texting while driving habit, to help teen drivers reduce distractions on the road. This comes at the cusp of Oprah launching “No Phone Zone” campaign raising awareness and today April 30th is the national day. Plus the month of May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month.

Or you may choose to view the mobile-only version for faster page load and less scrolling… either way it offers that choice by tapping the Android-slash-monitor icon in browser header.

Like other awesome browsers for Android it supports Pinch to zoom (on Android 2.0 and above), Copy and Paste, Find on Page, multiple window browsing, Bookmarks, Downloads, even a Report Broken Video feature.

Gripe Alert: Like Opera Mini for Android is supports cloud browsing, meaning webpages and assets like images are compressed on Skyfire’s servers thus sending you a smaller, faster to load page offering a boost in browsing speed; however it was not experienced in our evaluation. It was similar if not slower than the default Android browser.

Usefulness:

The app is very useful for its core capability of mobile web browsing and puts the icing on the cake with all the goodies like full web browsing, playable Flash videos, content exploring and social sharing features.

Frequently Used:

If used as your default web browsing it could potentially be used multiple times daily.

Android Advice™: How to Set Skyfire as my default Browser?

Easy way: when first installed, any action that requires a web browser such as web link or Google search will prompt a window asking which browser you would like to use. Check below “Set as default” then choose Skyfire.

More involved way: say you chose the default browser when presented with the popup and want to change it later. Go to Settings from home screen » Manage Applications » Browser » tap Clear defaults » visit a URL or search to get the popup to return and follow the easy way above.

Interface & Ease of Use:

Operating the user interface is slightly clunky but an adjustment will have you mastering it.

I used to own a HTC Mogul from Sprint… and I loved that phone! It’s one of the reasons why I am a loyal HTC fan and owner. When I had that Windows-based phone there was an application called Skyfire. This was one of the greatest apps I have ever used, and this was before applications were what they are today.

Skyfire took my meager Windows-based browser and made it King, allowing it to access Flashed-based sites in all its glory. Now Skyfire, which I am excited to say, is releasing an Android-based application. Not only will Skyfire allow full Flash video playback, it packs the punch of pinch to zoom, copy and paste and many other mobile browsing essentials. Well Google has put an end to the rumors and gave truth to the reported Flash enabled 2.2 Android OS update.  Not only have they debunked the Flash rumor, it’s now official that the OS update should be coming soon to devices. Flash 10.1 will come stock with the new OS, and is coming fresh off the news of Apple and Adobes public disagreement. Google’s Vice President for Engineering Andy Rubin also took a shot back at Apple saying, “sometimes being open means not being militant about the things consumers are actually enjoying.” Looks like the battle for smart phone supremacy will stay personal as time moves on.  My money is on ANDROID.

MocoSpace, the mobile equivalent of MySpace who dormantly registered more than 11 million, released a report surveying their users to reveal people are twice as likely to buy an iPhone and Android phone however Android traffic is up nearly 40% in the first quarter 2010. Key take-aways from data like this shows the market is shifting from a desktop computing world to a mobile computing world.

“Our Mobile Social Graph report demonstrates the rise of Android and iPhone as central social-networking devices,” says Justin Siegel, MocoSpace CEO. “Our data confirms that smartphones encourage longer sessions and also increased purchasing of virtual currency.”

The Bad; it forces close at random often, it adds to battery drain as it seems like a run-away process app (can’t exactly pin point it but I started having those issues after installing the app… this is just speculation), for many users whom replaced their default home screen (with apps like aHome, Open Home or SlideScreen, etc.) it asks to be the default home… overriding your customized home screen.

The Good; like other remote phone finding apps it helps you locate exact position via GPS, backup data in scheduled intervals and restore if needed, remotely lock the key pad if stolen, and send friends your location or request theirs provided they have iTag installed and allow it in Privacy settings.

Usefulness:

Using a stealthy app to help find a lost r stolen phone is always infinitely useful. iTag has a unique feature when your friends have the app installed and allow you to access their location; for example it can be used if your phone in a coffee shop near a friend… you can use the web portal to see how close the friend is and SMS text them from the computer to grab your phone for you.

Ease of Use:

If you can get past registration, operating the app is straight-forward. Simple toggle controls happen on the device whereas more control is offered on www.iTag.com website.

There are two different interfaces that need to be spoken about for WaveSecure; the app itself and the web interface. The app consists of 5 buttons; Backup, Upload Media, Restore, Lock Down Phone, and Wipe Now! They do exactly what they say. You really can’t get easier then that.

I used to use a keychain fob to find out if I was near a wireless network. This app allows for me to get this ugly thing off my keychain and find out exactly what’s around me. The first screen you see shows a scrolling line graph of the wireless networks around you and their signal strength. With a quick finger swipe, you see a bar graph with not only the signal strength, but also the channels that the Wi-Fi networks are using, great if you’re trying to find a less crowded channel for your own network. The next screen is a gauge to show you the strength of just one access point, helpful if you’re trying to track those nasty signal drops and dead zones in your house. The screen to the right shows the details of each network including the SSID, MAC address, signal, strength, security type, and channel. The last screen shows you which channel on your current access point is the best choice for the least amount of interference.

All of these screens have helpful options such as sorting, snapshots, and filters. You can also change settings such as the scan interval, the specific channels you’re looking for, keeping the screen on, and letting the program turn on Wi-Fi by itself when you access it.

Usefulness:

As a tech on the go, this piece of software is really a lifesaver. When I need to check my mail, I don’t have to pull out my seven pound laptop just to find that all the wireless points in the area are locked down. (Yes, I know I could use my phone, but sometimes I just don’t have time to write a long email on that tiny keyboard).  When I’m at a clients house it’s a great diagnosing tool to find out where issues with their wireless may exist.

This piece of software, although geared toward the technician, is useful to anyone on the go who needs to find a network while they’re traveling in the wild.

Ease of Use:

WiFi Analyzer has a very easy to use interface. Nothing is overly technical. I don’t feel like every graph would be useful for everyone, but the ones each individual would use would not be hard to decipher and navigate.

Frequently Used:

I use it almost every day. I believe any technician would. However, the average user would most likely use this when they were working offsite and traveling.

Interface:

I can’t think of a way to improve it, but I also don’t design software. There is a unrefined feel to it that I would like to see improved, but I’m not sure exactly what the improvement would be.

The game is fun, as challenging as traditional Tetris with the added complexity of 3D and addictive.

How to Play/Control Blockx 3D:

Move

Blocks can be moved in horizontal and vertical axis. Depending on configuration, move scan be executed through gestures or touch activated hot spots, also hardware input devices can be used to perform moves. Moves with physical keyboard can be done with J, I, K, L letters.

Rotate

Blocks can be freely rotated along X, Y and axis, rotation can be performed clockwise or counter clockwise. Generally the touch screen is used to rotate blocks. Flick up/down for X axis rotation, flick left/right for Y axis rotation, and gesture in circular motions for clockwise or counter clockwise rotation.

Drop

Blocks can be “fast dropped”  into pit by pressing the trackball/trackpad button.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The game has vibration and accompanying futuristic sound effects when you drop blocks and game board quakes; simple yet detailed touch.
