Nokia N97 gets a minor firmware update v 21.0.102 having a size of 4.3 MB. The update is built to make the response time a lot faster. The memory remains the same as 53.2 MB. Though, Nokia N97 comes with UDP support but I recommend you to back up your phone memory before performing a firmware update as precautionary measure.
Following are a list of Firmware v21 improvements
• Default auto-rotate is now set to ON
• Mass memory content updated
• OviSuite and OviPlayer installation files preloaded
• Prleloaded Maps updated to higher version
• Ovi Maps application updated to latest version (3.03)

Please note that if your phone has the latest update support, then you need not update.
Also, note that your firmware update does not depend upon the region. It only depends on the device number and make sure that your service provider has approved the latest firmware update. To check whether the Firmware is available for your device, you need to perform the following steps:-
1) Type *#0000#
2) Select Check for updates
3) If it is available, then start installing the firmware.

Some students from Imperial College London have developed an open source game named Pong. In this game, you have to blink your eyes when you think it is appropriate to hit.

According to the students,

This revolutionary game could allow people with severe physical disabilities to become ‘gamers’ for the first time.

To play the game, the player needs to wear special glasses containing infrared light and webcam. This helps in recording eye movements. The webcam is connected to a computer where synchronization is carried out between player’s eye movement and the game.

According to the team’s supervisor from the Department of Bioengineering ICL,

The game that they’ve developed is quite simple, but we think it has enormous potential, particularly because it doesn’t need lots of expensive equipment… We hope it could ultimately provide entertainment options for people who have very little movement. In future, people might be able to blink to turn pages in an electronic book, or switch on their favorite song, with the roll of an eye

Apple`s iPad is one of the most anticipated gadgets of 2010.The craze of iPad seems to have reached heights in last couple of months as Apple reaches closer to its delivery date.
Apple has already sold out its initial supply of iPads, which is going to be delivered on April 3rd. If you make an order now, you will have to wait until April 12th. Apple has only started delivering Wi-Fi enabled iPads. 3G enabled iPads will ship by late April.
People familiar with the iPad’s running sales totals told the Wall Street Journal, “ Apple has the potential to sell more iPads in its first three months than the 1.2 million iPhones it sold in the three months.

Apple also provided a “Late April” ship date for the iPad Camera Connection kit and started taking pre-orders for the device. It is unavailable to the people who have already ordered it. The iPad Camera Connection Kit enables you to import pictures and videos in two ways: using a camera’s USB cable or directly from an SD card.

Here is a good news for all the traumatic patients. Their stress can be reduced to quite an extent by playing computer games like Tetris. Researchers at Oxford University found out that the patients engaging themselves in Tetris are less likely to have flashbacks of traumatic events.
The research was performed in the Department of Psychiatry at Oxford University, headed by Dr Emily Holmes.

He performed experiment with 40 new patients. 20 of them were allowed to play Tetris while the other half did practically nothing. It was observed that the person who played the game had fewer flashbacks than the left out person in next few days.
According to the doctor, “It takes around 6 hours after a traumatic event for a memory to be fully formed and disrupting the formation of those negative thoughts could help the patients. Disrupting those functions by diverting the brain’s attention in this crucial six-hour window seems to dampen down the vividness of memory.”
The Oxford team chose “Tetris” because it involves moving coloured objects around and requires a lot of presence of mind.

Two Israeli scientists have made use of existing fibre optic and computer technology. It is found that by transmitting binary lock-and-key information in the form of light pulses, the device ensures that only the sender and receiver, and absolutely nobody else can unlock a key.

The data can reach over 3,000 miles without any serious parts of the signal being lost.It is done by transmitting the signal in a binary code (the key bearer) in the form of 1s and 0s, but using light and lasers instead of numbers.

Neofonie is a German company which is all set to introduce an Android powered tablet PC named as WePad. This new product from Neofonie is considered to be highly competitive with iPads.

Nintendo plans to launch a new model of its DS hand-held game console that allows users to play 3D games without using special glasses. It is set for release before March 2011 in Japan. This new hand-held seems to be much more innovative than that bigger-screened Nintendo DSi XL.

Dont worry my friends,3DS will definitely be backward compatible with currrent DS and DSi games.

Earlier this year, it was discussed that there is a possibility of a motion sensor being part of a new Nintendo DS. However, it is still not clear whether 3DS will use a sensor with the ability to “read the movements of people playing.”This remains a rumour until the next meeting, which is scheduled on June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles. Another rumour suggested that NVIDIA’s Tegra processor would power a new DS hand-held.

It seems that Nintendo, a strong competitor of Sony and Microsoft, is trying its best to do a world of good in the market.

People have asked – is iPad the next big iPhone? They might just as well be right. iPhone set a trend in today’s mobile community, something that no phone has beaten till date. iPad may just do the same with  the upcoming handheld market.

Apple is known mostly for it’s amazingly crafted UI and innovative ideas that make user experience a breeze.It has been proved time and again and might very well be the reason for it’s strong fan-base. Indeed, wall street journal has confirmed that Apple has already sold “hundreds of thousands” of iPads already, that too when the booking started last Friday. Things look bright enough for iPad.

WSJ also says:

..the company is still negotiating with media companies for a price cut on TV shows that people can download onto the device, said people familiar with the matter. Apple also hoped to work closely with newspaper, magazines and textbook publishers on new ways to digitally present print content on the iPad, but has for now put the effort on backburner in favor of focusing on other content, said one of those people.

Whatever might be in store for iPad, atleast one thing is more than clear – it sure is going to be a hit. We’ll keep you updated on further news about this.

Symbian foundation has announced today the S^3 platform. It will be “feature-complete” by the end of Q1 and will have some big features like:

1. better UI
2. HDMI support – see movies at 1080p
3. Multi-touch gesture support
4. intuitive homescreen – More widgets. Twitter, facebook, Weather forecasts all at the flick of a finger.
5. better support for H/W acceleration – S^3 harnesses the hardware to provide maximum visual enhancements and a feature rich environment.
6. mutitask more- Writeable Data Paging will allow more applications to run in parallel for a faster, more complete and efficient multi-tasking experience, especially on mid-range hardware.
7. Faster Networking to provide a rich browsing experience.
8. Music store integration – This feature will be embedded within the radio and will help to identify a song and download it’s lyrics and album art.

The best thing is that it is the first Symbian to have an entirely open source release.

Microsoft has officially announced the next generation of Windows Mobile OS – Windows Phone 7 Series. This OS has been built from scratch and is totally different from the earlier versions. It now focuses strongly on social networking and has integrated support for Xbox LIVE and Zune.

Steve Ballmer has stated:

Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.

Every 7 series phone is going to have a dedicated Bing button – to enable one click search from anywhere in the phone.

7 series also brings a completely new concept – WIndows Phone hubs. They are meant to club similar items together and thus provide an easy and friendly to browse data. 7 series will have the following six hubs by default:

1. People: It is Meant for social experience and can bring together content based on someones live feeds from social networks and photos. It can also be used to post updates to Facebook and Windows Live.
2. Pictures: Helps to share pictures and video to social networks.
3. Games: Used to play Xbox LIVE games and to see gamers profiles.
4. Music+Video:Will be used to transfer movies or music from the internet or from a user’s PC. It also has an FM radio.
5. Marketplace: Allows users to easily discover and load the phone with certified applications and games.
6. Office:With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents.

Many phone company’s have already started to make phones for this OS and so, we might very well see a working device by the end of this year.

Seems like Windows Mobile 7 won’t be having flash support for quite some time now. Adobe has issued a brief statement in this regard:

Microsoft and Adobe are working closely together. While the newest version of Windows Phone won’t support Flash at initial availability, both companies are working to include a browser plug-in for the full Flash player in future versions of Windows Phone. More details will be shared at Microsoft MIX next month.

Though this statement seems positive, bear in mind that Adobe has promised us flash support for Android but we won’t be seeing it for atleast 3 months. This might place Windows Mobile 7’s time someplace in second half of this year.
