  • Torch Malfunction At The 2010 Winter Olympics

The 4th torch bearer had nothing to light

Doesn’t seem like anything is going right at the 2010 Winter Olympics this year. First there was the snow problem. Then there was the terrible tragedy of an athlete dying. And then the opening ceremonies were fraught with malfunction. Torch malfunction that is.

“It’s a very complex piece of equipment. As you saw, it literally had to dance its place into its final position,” artistic director David Atkins told reporters.

“Unfortunately, the trap that revealed it from the floor of the stadium, which worked perfectly well at the beginning of the ceremony … with the totems rising from the floor, had some mechanical failure.”

We’ll have more pictures and video when they are available.

    KD Lang – Hallelujah Video

In case the above video of kd lang singing Hallelujah doesn’t work, here’s a backup:

  • 40 MORE Sexy Musicians That Don’t Suck

Back in December 2009 we brought you 15 smokin’ hot female musicians currently on our radar for not just their looks, but their talent as well. We’re tired of being bombarded with overly produced vocals and canned pop star looks, so in digging deeper we found 40 more incredibly sexy female musicians — that don’t suck.

    Zooey Deschanel

Opening our list is the doe-eyed singer-songwriter and actress Zooey Deschanel. She’s half of indie folk band She & Him, and easily hypnotizes the masses with her rich vocals, reminiscent of a by-gone era. We’re definitely jealous of her husband, Ben Gibbard, but it’s not like he’s got any lack of ladies hounding him, either.

    Meiko

Small-town girl Meiko was born and raised in Roberta, Georgia, but moved to LA to set down her roots and begin her music career. The indie-folk singer-songwriter’s work has since appeared on television, and along with her piercing looks, her voice is amazing live.

    Alexandra Lawn

Alexandra Lawn is the cellist behind indie rock band Ra Ra Riot’s addictive tunes. Should you be wary of a cello in a rock band? Not in this case — it goes perfectly with their style, and we’ve never before seen the cello played so sensually.

    Annie Clark

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark, best known under the moniker St. Vincent, is one hot musician you can’t miss. Her voice is soothing and her eyes are gorgeous — plus, chicks with guitars are sexy.

    Regina Spektor

Soviet-born Regina Spektor captured us with her angelic voice and luscious looks. Her family moved her to New York when she was young, where she excelled in music once discovering her parent’s upright piano. You can hear a tinge of an accent in her singing, and we like it.

    Wata

Wata is the guitar behind the experimental Japanese rock band Boris, and this hottie can shred better than you. We don’t think you’ll have a problem with that. Will you?

    Alicia Keys

R&B soul queen Alicia Keys is hot, and has a set of pipes to match. She started playing piano at seven, and once she mastered Beethoven, she began writing her own music. Alicia has since taken the world by storm — and claimed a trunk full of Grammys to go along with it.

    Alison Goldfrapp

Alison Goldfrapp is an English singer-songwriter that really gets us going. She fronts electronic band Goldfrapp, which became Grammy award-nominated back in 2007. Although she has changed her personal style many times, her fairy-like looks keep our attention — and her voice is nice too.

    Anette Olzon

Swedish-born Anette Olzon is the siren soprano behind the vocals of Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish. She replaced the band’s old female lead back in 2005, and has used her musical background — built from childhood — to fuel her powerful vocals.

Mexican born beauty Ximena Sariñana is a Latin Grammy and Grammy award-nominated singer-songwriter and actress. She’s pretty new to the music scene, with her first album released in 2008, but with a soulful voice like hers, we’ll likely hear more of her soon.

    Melissa Auf Der Maur

Melissa Auf Der Maur is quite the renaissance woman. She’s an established rock musician with a career that has included five years as Hole’s bassist as well as touring with The Smashing Pumpkins — oh, and she’s a published photographer. She basically kicks ass at vocals, bass guitar and looks hot to boot.

    Björk

Björk Guðmundsdóttir, or more simply known by her first name — thankfully — is an Icelandic singer-songwriter, music producer, actress and composer. She’s the oldest hottie on this list, but at 44 she looks amazing — hey, we’d hit that.

    Laura-Mary Carter

Laura-Mary Carter is one half of two piece alt-rock band Blood Red Shoes, based in England. She’s one of the cutest girls with a guitar we’ve seen yet.

    Emily Wells

Violinist Emily Wells was born in Texas to a musical family, and picked up the violin when she was just four years old. She’s only released one official album, but her looks and skills are undeniable.

    Simone Simons

Dutch-born Simone Simons picked up an interest in music when she was only 10, and began taking classical singing lessons at 15 after listening to the Nightwish album Oceanborn. She’s since picked up lead vocals for the symphonic metal band Epica, and continues to hypnotize us in all her redheaded glory.

    Rachel Flotard

Singer-songwriter-guitarist Rachel Flotard is the frontwoman of Seattle-based power pop/punk rock band Visqueen. She was a back up singer in support of hottie musician Neko Case — we can only fantasize about what else the two of them together could accomplish.

    Greta Salpeter

Singer and pianist Greta Salpeter fronts the band The Hush Sound, and though they’re on hiatus at the moment, she’s working on her own EP. She has angelic looks and the sweetest voice.

    Hayley Westenra

Classically trained vocalist Hayley Westenra is not only talented, but gorgeous. She’s a UNICEF Ambassador too — the youngest in the world — and she’s performed for dignitaries around the globe.

    Joanna Newsom

Joanna Newsom is an adorable harpist and singer-songwriter. Although some would describe her vocal style to be “childlike,” while she exhibits quite a few original styles, her skills on the harp are undeniable.

    Kaki King

    Kate Earl

Kate Earl was born in Anchorage, Alaska and started playing piano at 4 years old. She moved to LA and signed onto her record label in 2004 and although she’s newer to the mainstream music scene, she’s too hot to leave off.

    LIGHTS

Valerie Anne Poxleitner, best known as LIGHTS, is one of the cutest Canadian imports we’ve seen to date. She’s mainly known for her synthpop, but we dug up an amazing acoustic number by her that really showcases her musical abilities — as well as that adorable face.

Her music career began at age 16, but in 2003 she was hit my a car and had to relearn everyday activities — from brushing her teeth to walking. She even had to relearn how to sing and does so with pure talent.

    Katie Melua

Soviet-born Katie Melua relocated to England at 14 and hopped onto the music scene in 2003. Her voice is mellow and although she may not be mainstream in the US, with her talent — and looks — she should be.

    Michelle Branch

Michelle Branch may be one of the more mainstream musicians on this list, but she’s definitely not lacking on the talent side of things — she does pretty well in the looks department too. • 15 Weirdest Foreign Game Shows

Turn on the television in America and you’ll likely see some of the stupidest shows ever concocted. It seems that reality-themed shows are extremely popular at the moment — unfortunately — but we are not the only country in the world that watches terrible, or just downright strange game shows. Here are 15 examples of the weirdest foreign game shows we could find; some of them are so awful that they’re fantastic.

    Takeshi’s Castle (Japan)

This classic Japanese game show aired from 1986 to 1989 and featured not only Beat Takeshi himself, but hordes of talentless contestants faced with hilarious obstacles. Although Takeshi’s Castle only aired for a couple years, it became a cult hit and many countries created their own spin-offs. The American spin-off, Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC) became wildly popular, adding hilarious dubbing of the original footage.

    Distraction (England)

Distraction was a show that aired originally in the United Kingdom. The gameplay involved contestants answering questions while being distracted in various painful — or even humiliating — ways. We couldn’t stop laughing at this episode in which the buzzers were placed in the middle of cacti.

El Gran Juego de la Oca (Spain)

Translated to The Great Game of the Goose, this crazy game show was basically a giant game board with 63 pieces. The contestant rolls a number and goes to a space on the board, each with some random stunt that must be completed. Our favorite: Space 57 required the contestant to keep his heart rate down while watching a stripper. That video was unavailable, so you get to watch some lady get her feet licked by a goat instead. Just as good, right?

    The Intercept (Russia)

The Intercept was like a real life version of the video game — namely Grand Theft Auto — except a bit too real. The contestant has 35 minutes to steal a car and escape from the police. If successful, the car is his prize, but there was a twist. It wasn’t just fun and games, as contestants really did get arrested if caught, and the majority lost the game.

    Gaki no Tsukai (Japan)

Gaki no Tsukai has a regular cast of hilarious comedians, and they’re quite fond of torture. In the video above, the challenge was to say a tongue twister without mistake, or suffer the consequence — a hit to the groin. What strikes (and impresses) us most is that they actually have a device that they made to perform this singular task.

    Brain Wall (Japan)

Originally part of a bigger show that included all kinds of activities — making humans into bowling balls and whatever else the show’s producers could imagine — Brain Wall has to be one of the best. Also known as Human Tetris, the segment is pretty straightforward — the contestants have to figure out a way to fit through the oddly cut shapes in moving foam walls. The outcome is hilarious if they don’t make it, often breaking the walls in half.

Non Dimenticate Lo Spazzolino da Denti (Italy)

Originally aired in Britain as Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush, this Italian spin-off is quite interesting. Contestants were chosen from the audience, and all had to be prepared for a possible vacation, immediately after the program if they won. Part of the show included a strip quiz segment, in which contestants had to strip with each incorrect answer.

    Dadagiri (India)

Dadagiri was marketed in India as “TV’s meanest game show,” and definitely lived up to its name. Contestants competed for a large cash prize, but in order to win they had to survive three bullies. The bullies forced them to eat nasty things, or otherwise humiliate or hurt themselves, amongst other things. The game show is also part of a pretty awesome meme, in which one of the bullies slapped a contestant across the face as part of the act. He didn’t respond so well — and neither did the host and crew.

    Bol Baby Bol (India)

Bol Baby Bol is similar to the American game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics! but ups the cheese factor by at least tenfold. It features contestants that are quizzed on the lyrics of popular Bollywood songs, who are awarded cash prizes for succeeding.

    Gordo Freak Show (Brazil)

At first we thought we’d found some kind of fetish video on YouTube, but it turns out that this was actually a game show in Brazil called the Gordo Freak Show. The host would torture contestants in various ways, and these two girls got the tickly end of the stick. The winning girl stayed inside of her circle area.

    Bitoy’s SHOwwwTIME (Philippines)

Bitoy’s SHOwwwTIME is a relatively new talent game show airing in the Philippines. Talent game show, huh? Can’t be too weird, right? Well, this guy managed to make it really weird. All the contestants are dressed in strange costumes and have silly nicknames — and yes, the host is dressed as a character from Avatar.

    Tutti Frutti (Germany)

Based on the Italian game show Colpo Grosso, Tutti Frutti was quite the popular game show in its day. It was the first erotic game show in German television, in which contestants earned points to invest into removing clothing from a stripper.

    Fort Boyard (France)

French game show Fort Boyard has definitely inspired some of today’s game shows, like Fear Factor. The show features physical and endurance tasks mostly, but it varied per country spin-off. It might not seem that strange to those who are used to Survivor and the sort, but a game show on a floating fortress? That’s cool, even if a bit overdone. The little people that act as assistants throughout the show are a big plus, too.

    You Bet Your Ass (Canada)

Canadian game show You Bet Your Ass ran on their Comedy Network for a couple years. The show sported a casino motif, and contestants were required to answer questions relating to pop-culture to earn points. Sound pretty normal, right? Not when you find out that the rounds are named things like “Piece of Ass,” “Ass On the Line,” and “Up Your Ass.” It all sounds a bit …obsessive.

    Fart Powder (Japan)

Alright, so we really couldn’t find the name of the Japanese game show this segment belongs to, so we simply nicknamed it Fart Powder. It’s awesome. Basically, contestants receive a baby powder enema — yes, really — and compete against each other to see who can blow the powder the farthest. Now that’s entertainment.

  • 12 Most Disappointing Grammy Follow-Ups

It’s a story that plays like a broken record: Band gets started, band makes great album, success comes quickly and leaves just as soon, as it goes with the sophomore slump album. Sometimes though, even well-seasoned and award-winning artists can suffer from a lack of inspiration, and release a disappointing follow-up. With this year’s Grammy’s still fresh in our minds, here are 12 of the most disappointing follow-up albums from Grammy Award-winning artists.

    Mariah Carey – Glitter

Songstress and diva extraordinaire Mariah Carey took the pop world by storm when she made her debut in 1990. She won a Grammy for “Best New Artist” in 1991, and kept us mesmerized for several albums. What happened with Glitter, we don’t know. What we do know is that it was an utter failure, and everyone had a great time using her as a punching bag until she came back strong.

    Coldplay – X&Y

Alternative rock group Coldplay made their name on the scene with a one-two punch of albums Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. They even won Grammy Awards for both of those albums. Suffices to say, when X&Y was announced, there were huge expectations for the album. Overall, it was a disappointment, and it’s the reason why all soccer moms now love Coldplay.

    Beyoncé – B’day

Former Destiny’s Child member, Beyoncé Knowles, is an amazing singer. Her solo debut album Dangerously in Love was a huge success, and earned her five Grammy Awards, including “Best Contemporary R&B Album.” B’day was released three years later, and was not nearly the success of her first album — only one song stood out. It made us all a little sad, but she made up for it with I Am… Sasha Fierce.

    U2 – Rattle and Hum

Irish rock band U2’s album The Joshua Tree truly rocketed them to superstardom — it won two Grammy Awards, including “Album of the Year” — so we expected a lot of their following releases, to say the least. Rattle and Hum was released a year later, in 1988, and it was supposed to be a tribute to rock legends. It came out as U2 simply trying to be one of the legends — a bit too early for their time.

Alanis Morissette – Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

Jagged Little Pill put Canadian singer Alanis Morissette on the map. It was her debut album and it earned her “Album of the Year” and “Best Rock Album,” along with two other Grammy Awards. As for her follow-up Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, not so much. There are some folks who like the album, but in comparison to her debut’s success, it was a disappointment, selling only a fifth of what its predecessor did.

    Boyz II Men – Evolution

Boyz II Men found fame during the early 1990’s, and remains the most successful R&B vocal group of all time. Albums Cooleyhighharmony and II were smash hits, and they earned four Grammy Awards for their work. After II came Evolution, with much disappointment and it fell off the charts quickly.

    Michael Jackson – Invincible

Michael Jackson didn’t earn the title King of Pop for nothing — he influenced music forever. He had huge success with his albums Bad, Thriller, and Dangerous, but he went down from there it seems. After Dangerous came Invincible, which was not aptly named. It was long, lost steam, and is generally considered his weakest album.

George Michael – Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1

Singer-songwriter George Michaels gained fame in the 1980’s as a solo artist when he released Faith. He won two Grammy Awards for it, including album of the year in 1989. His second release, Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1, was a bit of an identity crisis. It sold only one-twentieth of what Faith did, and let’s just say there was no Volume 2.

    John Mayer – Battle Studies

Singer-songwriter John Mayer won “Best Pop Vocal Album” in 2007 for his album Continuum. He had a great track record of successes totaling 3 albums, that is, until he released Battle Studies. The coveted sensitive-dude rocker just couldn’t cut it this time, and though he tried for a more mature album, he disappointed many fans.

    Kelly Clarkson – My December

Kelly Clarkson is the first American Idol winner to score a Grammy. She brought home two Grammy Awards, including “Best Pop Vocal Album,” for Breakaway. Her first two albums had done well, but her third, My December, did not. We can’t even remember one song from the album and the first single “Never Again” was pulled quickly from radio stations.

    Lil’ Wayne – Rebirth

Hip-hop rapper Lil’ Wayne took home four Grammy Awards for his hit album Tha Carter III, including “Best Rap Album,” and was nominated for a staggering four others. He was on a roll for a few albums, but decided — out of nowhere — to make a rock album. Granted, some artists can make that genre jump, but Lil’ Wayne just didn’t quite get there with Rebirth. He should just stick to what he’s good at.

    Diddy – Forever

Rapper Diddy, P. Diddy, Sean Combs — or whatever he wants to be called these days — saw success when he released No Way Out. It won him a Grammy for “Best Rap Album,” but he just didn’t keep it going with Forever. He had his hand in too many projects to really make this album stick, and it came out uninspired. He’s probably not losing any sleep over it, though.

  • Greg Oden Admits Pictures Are Of Him… Apologizes

Greg Oden has confessed that the nude pictures are in fact photos that he took of himself about 1.5 years ago.

“First, I’d like to apologize to everybody … Portland, the fans, the organization. It was very embarrassing,” Oden said to reporters. “It was something that happened over a year and a half ago. I’m very sorry, and I’m definitely embarrassed for my family and everybody…”

“It was a lady friend who I was having a relationship with, and it was just for her. It was definitely meant to keep private.”

“I definitely learned a lot since it happened. Like I said, it was over a year and a half ago. I’ve definitely matured since then. You have to be careful with what you do, and who you trust.”

“I’m obviously disappointed having worked so hard to get to where I was. This is a setback but I’ll be back. It’s in God’s hands now.”

“I want to thank the fans, my teammates and everyone in the Blazers family for all of their good thoughts.”

  • Tim Tebow Super Bowl Ad – Abortion Controversy

Tim Tebow & Mom To Be In Controversial Super Bowl Ad

CBS is currently scheduled to run an ad from Focus On The Family starring Tim Tebow and his mom. The spot will be decidedly anti-abortion and pro-life.

The controversy is over whether CBS should air the Tim Tebow Super Bowl ad or not. Does it have the potential to alienate millions of viewers who do not share Tebow’s views on abortion?

Given various reports on a Super Bowl ad recession, it’s going to be tough for the network to say no.

  • 15 Craziest Celebrity Backstage Requests

Is it really cliché for a rock star to do — and request — crazy things backstage at concerts? Of course it is, but it still happens. One thing’s for sure though, rock stars are not the only offenders when it comes to demanding a lot from their backstage crew. Celebrities in general have special lists of items to accompany them while out of the spotlight, but some simply go overboard. Here are 15 of the most ridiculous celebrity backstage requests.

    Celine Dion

Songstress Celine Dion has been active in her career since 1990, and has released such super hits as “My Heart Will Go On” and “Because You Loved Me.” Although well-received by her fans, she can apparently be extremely picky when backstage. She requires that her dressing room be precisely 23 degrees Celsius — 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Now that’s pretty specific, but we have to wonder how she keeps track of the temperature all the time and what she’d do with a one degree variation. Will her heart go on, then?

    Amy Winehouse

English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse is generally seen as a wreck by the public. In case you can’t tell, we had a great time looking through pictures of Ms. Winehouse. She’s not particularly needy backstage, at least, not in the material sense. However, Winehouse apparently requires that her crew be sober — so she can get wasted. Oh, the irony.

    Britney Spears

Britney Spears has been on quite a rollercoaster ride during her career. We’d like to still think of her as the cutsie, pigtailed bubblegum girl she once was — but that’s just not possible anymore. She is very specific about her backstage needs. She demands a private phone line in her dressing room — for outgoing calls only — and will fine the promoter $5,000 for any unauthorized incoming calls. She also likes two boxes of Pop Tarts, Froot Loops cereal, cable television, two 6-foot sofas and odor-free carpet. We understand the last half of the list but, a private phone line? Ever heard of cell phones?

    Prince

Musician Prince has reportedly written more than 1,000 songs, and women have always thrown themselves at him, so we give him credit where it’s due. He’s a bit of an odd duck backstage, though. He likes a physician to be on hand at all times to inject him with vitamin B12 — the physician is understandable, but he really must like his B12. Another odd backstage requirement is that all food “must be covered by clear plastic wrap” until he uncovers it. Very strange.

    Jennifer Lopez

Pop and R&B wonder Jennifer Lopez is reportedly the richest person of Latin American descent in Hollywood. It’s understandable considering her success in music, fashion and who knows what other things she’s gotten herself into. While backstage, she has a thing for the color white. White tablecloths, drapes, flowers, couches, candles — you name it, she wants it white. Seems a little OCD, but that’s nothing compared to the fact that she requires her coffee to be stirred only counter-clockwise.

    Van Halen

Rock band Van Halen has enjoyed success since 1978, when their self-titled debut album was released. They’ve had the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, and some might agree that they have earned the right to be a little picky backstage. They always ask for a bowl of M&Ms candy, with the brown ones removed. It might seem strange at first — because it is — but it’s for good reason. The band wants to make sure that the organizers read their contract completely to avoid any safety issues with band equipment.

    Moby

Musician, DJ, and singer-songwriter Moby is best known for his ambient electronic music, and has gained worldwide success since his start in 1991. Just like any one of us, he has his likes and dislikes — but apparently really likes underwear. He requires that many, many extra pair be available. We don’t want to think about why. He also dislikes smoking, and has even gone to the point of throwing a tantrum about it, and refusing to play in a smoking venue altogether.

    Madonna

Material Girl Madonna is one of those music legends that you’ll always remember, whether or not you ever liked or even listened to her music to begin with. She’s gotten more eccentric over the years, so her strange backstage requests don’t surprise us. It’s just strange that she requires a brand new toilet seat at every concert she plays. Ever heard of covers? Guess they’re not good enough.

    Iggy Pop

Songwriter Iggy Pop has had huge influence on many genres of music, and he’s often considered one of the most dynamic stage performers of all time. That may be so, but he once requested seven dwarves to be brought backstage. We have no clue why. Maybe a reenactment of Snow White?

    Mariah Carey

Pop diva Mariah Carey really lives up to the title. She once required an attendant to get rid of her chewing gum, and she often desires the company of small furry animals backstage – bunny rabbits, puppies, and kittens are her favorite. She also likes Cristal champagne and bendy straws, although those items seem far more reasonable than a petting zoo.

    Paul McCartney

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney is another musician that has made history with his music. We’ve seen a lot of crazy requests, but his is ridiculously specific. He demands 19 leafy six-foot plants, four leafy four-foot plants, vegetarian catering only and absolutely no animal by-products anywhere — including the furniture and carpets.

    Marilyn Manson

Musician Marilyn Manson is best known for his striking stage persona. His backstage requests might seem tame compared to most — cranked up air conditioning, Haribo gummi bears (must be Haribo brand), absinthe, popcorn and Doritos. That is, until you get to the last one on the list: A bald hooker with no teeth.

    Mötley Crüe

Hard rock band Mötley Crüe have truly lived up the the rock star lifestyle with tattoos, women, jail and all the rest. It seems tame when they simply desire mayonnaise, Grey Poupon Dijon mustard, and creamy peanut butter. Oh wait, we almost missed a couple: A 12-foot long boa constrictor, a sub-machine gun, and the local Alcohols’ Anonymous meeting schedule. We take the tame comment back.

    David Hasselhoff

Knight Rider and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff also does a lot of other stuff — like singing and producing television shows. But who cares, none of that stuff matters because he’s just so awesome. Why? He requires a life-size cardboard cutout of himself backstage.

    Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand has taken home two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, four Emmy awards among a slew of others for her diverse work throughout her (very long) career. It’s hard to bash someone with that much under their belt, but come on — she requires rose petals in her toilet. Sounds like she’s got an ego bigger than her nose.
