  • Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will never get multitouch

As more information on the X10 continues to roll in, this device is continuing its roll downhill. It appears as though the hardware is not capable of supporting multi-touch. Couple this with the high suggested retail price and the multiply delays and you have a potential flop on your hands.

When it was first leaked around the end of October, this was arguably the hottest Android around the web. Everyone including me couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. Even the fact that it would have an outdated version of Android didn’t sway us from wanting it bad. But, after months of delays and a few lackluster reviews this phone has quickly fell from being a must have.

“I don’t have any technical details around the screen to share, sorry! – However I have now gotten confirmation on the question of multi touch. As said earlier there’s no multitouch in X10 – and I also can confirm that it’s not only related to SW but also to HW. Despite this, for future updates of X10 we are of course working on other solutions for e.g. zooming, which has been requested frequently on this blog, such has the solution demoed on X10 mini” Rikard Skogberg, Sony Ericsson

  • Sprint Announcing The EVO And New Data Plans Tomorrow?

An internal document was just leaked to the guys over at mobilecrunch. This document states that there will be a companywide meeting that outlines April marketing plans but, rumor has it that this will be no ordinary meeting. Some are calling it a top secret companywide mandatory meeting. The EVO wasn’t specifically mentioned in the document but let’s piece together this puzzle and see what we can make out it.

The other day there was a rumor that BestBuy would start presale of  these devices in the form of  redeemable gift cards that you can use to get the device when it is released sometime shortly after the presale. This April marketing meeting could be to prepare their employees on how to handle this May release. And there are talks of Sprint restructuring their data plan to offer 4G service data plans to their phones. It’s possible that this meeting will just cover new pricing plans and it’s possible that it will cover both. Lucky for us I know a few managers at Sprint and I will be revisiting this post in the coming days after I try to squeeze some information out of them.

  • Sprint EVO 4G won’t do simultaneous voice-data

Besides this being on Sprint, this single factor just ruled this phone out for me. I’m sure there are a few (a lot) of you that don’t really care about this. Looks like 4G will do nothing to change the fact that CDMA phones can’t do voice and data at the same time. I for one need my phone to have this ability. I use them both simultaneously almost every day. And this isn’t just some random rumor it has been confirmed by HTC themselves.

    The full quote from HTC:

“If you’re using 4G for data, you can’t use CDMA for voice. Currently the only way to do simultaneous voice and data would be through a third-party VOIP solution. However, this is not due to strict hardware limitations, so it’s possible this could change with future updates.”

Hardware wise, this is the best Android handset that we have knowledge of. Does this rule the phone out for you? Are you willing to overlook this and jump onboard anyway? I think this will be a big seller for Sprint but not as big as it could’ve been. This problem wouldn’t exist if it was on T-Mobile, let’s hope Sprint has a fix for this or T-Mobile gets it later in the year. For all of our sake, let’s all hope that AT&T doesn’t get their handcuffs on it.

Update: Sprint says this is not entirely correct. They are still testing 4G and it may be possible with the 4G connection.

  • Dell Aero hands-on and UI walkthrough – Video

Like most new phones, AT&T and Dell are trying to keep the information on this phone tight lipped until they are ready to officially introduce it. Engadget managed to get some hands on time with the Aero at this year’s CTIA and there were a few surprises packed into this phone. Needless to say they are not the type of surprises we like around here.

In the video below you will see that this phone has been stripped of almost everything that makes an Android an Android. The screen seems unresponsive and inaccurate. The only good thing about this device is its form factor. It’s a pretty good looking piece of hardware. That’s where the praise ends, the UI has been completely reskinned, and there are multiple skins available. It looks nothing like no other Android device and in this case, that’s not a good thing. Google Maps, Gmail, and a handful of other Google-centric features like the Android Market all have been removed. The home and back button has been merged into one that seems to work only when it wants too. This phone is full of AT&T software that most likely you will not be able to uninstall. The only silver lining is this is a prerelease phone and hopefully AT&T and Dell will decide to include it in the final product.

  • Asphault 5 For Android

Raging Thunder 2 may have been knocked off as the best 3D racing game for Android with the introduction of Asphalt 5 by Gameloft. The graphics of this game are some of the best that I have seen on Android. A few disadvantages of this game are, there is no multi player option and it costs over a dollar more than Raging Thunder 2 and it works best on second generation hardware. Some people say that this game doesn’t play well on the Nexus but it plays just fine on mines.

    Market description:

“Asphalt is rocketing onto Android! Get behind the wheel of the best vehicles from prestigious manufacturers (Lamborghini, Kawasaki, Ford, etc) and make a name for yourself in amazing 3D surroundings.

  • “Life Smart” UI On The Galaxy S – Video

The Galaxy S by Samsung has been overshadowed by the announcement of the HTC EVO 4G by Sprint. Since then Samsung has released their presentation from this year’s CTIA. Also, they folks at androidcentral were lucky enough to get some hands on time with this beautiful yet powerful handset.

Like a few other Android devices, this one features a new UI by Samsung called Life Smart. This Ui is a remake of their TouchWiz interface and features a few improvements that you will see in the video.

    The Galaxy S specs:
    • Android 2.1,
    • 4″ Super AMOLED (which is 20% brighter and eliminates 80% of sunlight glare),
    • Social Hub,
    • 16 GB internal storage plus MicroSD capability
    • Document Editor
    • Remote Controller for Samsung TVs
    • Google Maps Navigation with Voice search and turn-by-turn (as well as real-time traffic updates)

  • SlashGear Reviews The X10

Another Android best has been handled by our friends from Slashgear. Earlier today they brought us one of the first unboxing of the highly anticipated HTC Desire. This time around, they are one of the first to review of the equally anticipated Sony Xperia X10. We’ve known, and wanted, this phone since around last October. Since then there has been multiple powerful Android handsets announced for release this year. So is it too little to for Sony or will this be their knight in shining armor.

The X10 same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as the Nexus One and HTC Desire but Sony chose to go with a 4” touch screen. Android 2.1 has been rumored to ship on the US version but this has not been confirmed so as it stands this is another 1.6 device. like Sense does for WinMo devices, Rachael does a great job of concealing the outdated donut that is installed on this device.

The X10 comes with 1GB of onboard storage, a microSD card slot and an 8GB card in the box. The usual additions like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and a very impressive 8.1 MP camera with LED flash. Rachael UI is where device really shines; the two main components of Rachael are the Mediascape and Timescape apps. Mediascape handles all of the audio, video and image content. And Timescape, like HTC “Friend Stream” and Motorola “Happenings”, handles all of the phone’s social networking. For the complete in-depth review as well as a video and picture gallery, head over to Slashgear now.

  • myTouch Drop and Go Charging Pad

The myTouch 3G may not be the best Android phone but it is definitely the most customizable Android yet. So far there are two versions and a collector edition dubbed “Fender”. It also has the most accessories available and from the looks of this newest introduction, it will continue to have new accessories made specifically for it. Today T-Mobile announced that it will be offering an inductive charging pad called the Go Charging Pad.

The charging pad will likely look similar to the one in the picture above. When you buy this pad, it will come with a special back plate that allows the phone to be charged by simply laying the phone on top of it. There a charging pad similar to this on the market now and if you have one you will feel right at home using this one. The pad will become available via T-Mobile retail stores in the coming weeks and a price has not been set.
