We love the look of rich, gleaming wood in the kitchen. When it’s done well, as it is in this renovated Arts and Crafts kitchen, it feels so warm and inviting. There are a few other things about this kitchen, too, that caught us. The owners made some unusual design choices that really seem to work for them.

What Are Light and Savory Ways to Use Canned Pumpkin? Good Questions
Q: After the Great Pumpkin Shortage of 2009 (was there really a shortage? If so, I didn’t notice) I am left with six cans of pumpkin puree. Although I love making pumpkin breads, cakes and pies from Thanksgiving to New Year’s — and I know I could store the cans until next year — I’m wondering if there is something I can do with them now. Light, savory dishes and wholesome sweets would be great!

Good Product: Pyrex Digital Timer
I have at least four timers in my kitchen (not counting my iPhone). I use them all constantly, especially when I am making a full meal and cooking multiple things at once. Each of my timers has at least one thing it does well; I especially love my timer from Muji. The new kid on the block, though, is this digital timer from Pyrex, and it is edging out the others with its functionality. Here’s why. -

What Should I Do With My Cooking Flops? Good Questions
Q: My New Year’s Resolution this year was to increase the amount of baking and cooking I do on a weekly basis. For the most part, it’s been a great success. However, I have had a few dismal recipe flops. I’m curious to know what you folks do when your recipe goes wrong. Do you force yourself to eat the burnt/unleavened/over-spiced/otherwise barely edible food anyway? Do you give it away to an unsuspecting friend? Do you feed it to your pet or husband? Or do you compost it?I’ve tried just about all of these options but most of them leave me feeling just plain guilty. What do you suggest I do instead?

James’ Tiny Yet Refreshing Kitchen Kitchen Spotlights
There is something about James’ totally tiny, totally simple kitchen that we find very refreshing. When James renovated his small San Francisco flat, he had to redo the kitchen entirely, but he only had a 5 1/2′ x 11′ space to work with. Inspired by sailboat galleys, where everything is tucked away neatly and no space is wasted, he created a small yet refreshing kitchen space that works perfectly for him.

Heavenly Hots: Tiny Pancakes with Sour Cream Innards Recipe Reviews
A couple weeks ago Amanda Hesser’s Recipe Redux column in The Times Magazine had a recipe for some very unusual pancakes. They flipped the usual pancake recipe ratios upside down and called for two cups of sour cream, four eggs, and only a scant handful of flour to hold it all together. They sounded unusual, and tricky, but Hesser called them “feathery, creamy, tangy.” How could we not try them?

How To Make Pizzadillas
Mid-way through congratulating ourselves (and alerting Merriam Webster) that we’d invented a new food and coined a word, we learned that we are the 1,256,339th person to make pizzadillas from leftover tortillas and that “pizzadilla” entered the esteemed OED in 1444. Anyone who hasn’t tried this quick, kid-friendly snack, read on for the simple how-to.• Read the full post at Ohdeedoh
