  • Printing from your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

    The simplest way to print from one of these mobile devices is not to print at all: it’s to do what most users probably do, which is to e-mail yourself the photo, link, or note in question and then wait until you get to a Mac or PC, retrieve the e-mail, and either access the URL or print the attached photo or the contents of the message. Though simple, this is not an especially easy or elegant solution. Its biggest merit is that it works consistently and reliably, and almost ensures you don’t lose vital information.

    Fortunately, third-party app makers have come out with a number of products designed specifically for printing from your iPhone. Some of these apps have been upgraded many times since their introduction—including new hybrid versions that run on the iPad as well as Apple’s other devices.

  • iPad ban rumors nixed at Cornell, Princeton, GWU

    Rumors that three universities had banned the use of Apple’s iPad ran rampant across the blogosphere last week, leaving some to wonder whether the device had some type of hidden problem.

    Those rumors, it turns out, were false.

    However, iPad owners at all three–Cornell, Princeton, and George Washington universities–have faced varying degrees of connectivity issues.

  • Wolfram Alpha App Price Drop, New Mobile Site, and Upcoming iPad App

    Wolfram Alpha, the company behind the online computational knowledge engine that was launched last year, announced today that the price of its iPhone app will be reduced to $1.99 from $49.99. Additionally, the company has launched a new site optimized for mobile devices.

    Those who purchased the iPhone app at its previous regular price of $49.99 or its sale price of $19.99 can request a refund via an online form through May 3.

  • Memeo announces Memeo Connect Reader for iPad

    The deluge of apps for the iPad has begun, and among the number that will be appearing in the App Store on day one is Memeo Connect Reader, a program that lets you access your Google Docs account and view the files you’ve stored there. The Memeo team gave Macworld a sneak peek at the application.

    Memeo Connect Reader syncs with your Google Docs account to provide you with the most up-to-date version of all of your documents. When you launch the app and log in to your account, you’ll be presented with a colorful set of folders that let you skim through your files by type (spreadsheets, presentations, documents, etc.).

  • AT&T, Sling Media partner to allow 3G access on iPhone SlingPlayer

    AT&T announced Thursday that it would allow the SlingPlayer Mobile application for the iPhone to stream video over the wireless providers nationwide 3G network.Sling Medias SlingPlayer allows users to watch video recorded at home from anywhere on the go. Previously, the SlingPlayer Mobile application for the iPhone was limited to Wi-Fi-only access to streaming video, due to bandwidth concerns on the 3G network.

  • YouTube – Student Voice – a film about visual learning

    This short film was produced by a group of Visual Learning Lab interns from the University of Nottingham. Based on a series of interviews conducted by VLL interns with fellow students on learning in HE, and in particular visual learning and related technology uses, this film presents findings and recommendations from the interview analysis by the VLL interns. The film is meant as a critical tool for triggering and supporting discussions about visual learning in HE by staff and students. It deliberately represents the students perceptions of visual learning. It is not meant to be representative, but offers a snapshot of some students views.

  • Google Docs to allow storage of any type of file

    Google is opening up its Docs hosted office productivity suite so that users can store any type of file in it, giving the popular software-as-a-service product an important online storage component.

    The functionality will be rolled out over the coming weeks to all Docs users, both the ones who use the stand-alone suite as well as those who use it as part of the broader communication and collaboration Apps suite for organizations.

    Now, Docs users will be able to store all their important files in a single place online, where they can access them from anywhere and share them with other people, according to Google.

  • CourseSmart Looks Ahead at eTextbooks on Apple’s Tablet

    The Wall Street Journal reports on eTextbook publisher CourseSmart, which is looking ahead to the release of Apples much-rumored tablet and is using this weeks CES conference in Las Vegas to show off its thoughts on how its content could be offered on the new device. In order to promote its vision, CourseSmart has developed a preview video demonstrating eTextbook usage on a concept Apple tablet. While the company has no inside knowledge of the device, it has clearly paired its ideas of how the tablet might function with Apples existing software design aesthetics.
