    dungeon_hunter_4

If you are a Dungeon Hunter fan we have great news…Dungeon Hunter 4 (DH4) has just been released and is available for immediate download on the Google Play Store! Gameloft’s much anticipated tetralogy has finally come to pass following a teaser announcement only days ago. Hit the break for the Play Store download link.

The game is free to download, but in this case gamers will not be “getting what they paid for” with this version by any means. DH4 packs all the gaming goodness of a premium fee game, and then some.

As is the case with the previous versions of Dungeon Hunter, gamers can expect a hack-and-slash dungeon crawler with single and multiplayer co-op modes, but with enhanced graphics and game-play elements that bring with it a whole new feel. Keep in mind, “with great power comes great responsibility“, meaning the enhanced graphics will come at a price…a large additional file download, so make sure you are using a WiFi connection for this one boys and girls or you just might find yourself paying more for this game than you expected.

  • Googorola Plans to Appeal to Wider Audience with Their New Line of ‘Sweet Spot’ Smartphones

googorola-logoMotorola’s first batch of Google-influenced phones are expected to start appearing on the market around the second half of 2013. According to Google, they are planing to put the “WOW” into Motorola’s already superior smartphones. Since Google’s purchase of Motorola back in May 2012, they have left Motorola to do their own thing, waiting for the right time to step in and add some Google flair.

According to Motorola’s Design Chief, Jim Wicks, their new design philosophy under Google’s reign is “better is better“, contrary to rival Samsung’s “bigger is better” philosophy. If you are anything like me, you can appreciate a well built smartphone with a seamless UI implementation. I personally own a Moto Droid RAZR M and can say with confidence that it is the most stable phone/platform I have owned since…well, ever.

According to Wicks, Motorola has been working on the next generation of Googorola smartphones for the past eight months and have “seen positive feedback and collaboration around things.” Google and Motorola have opened clear lines of communication in an attempt to better their processes through lessons learned from past experiences in each of their respective fields.

Wicks further stated that “Consumers love what the Android OS can do for them, and they want to have the most recent releases faster…From a software and UI perspective, our strategy is to embrace Android and to make it the best expression of Android and Google in the market. It will be the unadulterated version of Android, and I feel really good about our embracing Android and being the best Android experience.” Simply stated, the Google-Motorola collaboration promises to bring buyers the best of both worlds, an intuitive and stable OS along with superior hardware design.

The goal, reduced bevels coupled with larger screen sizes, and less bloatware, the result, just what the doctor ordered. Googorola wants to break free from the “bigger is better” mentality and work towards “quality over quantity” by keeping screen sizes to what they consider to be the “sweet spot” a majority of consumers are truly longing for. This sweet spot will provide consumers with the high-tech UI and smartphone they really want, in an easy to carry, easy to conceal package. No more gaudy devices at weekly staff meetings, just a functional, discrete solution that fits all your professional and personal needs.

Motorola also plans to build more cross-carrier brands, producing fewer products by driving “a more singular expression of our brand across multiple carriers”, and “fundamental change in model.” These new cross-carrier brands will be in addition to the current carrier specific brands such as RAZR and Droid lines, and will not take their place.

I must admit, the idea of streamlined, high-end smartphones at an affordable price, produced by two of the most prominent names in the industry is extremely appealing. I for one can’t wait to see what Googorola releases later this year!

  • AT&T HTC One Bootloader Unlocked via HTC Dev, Rooted, CWM Recovery Installed

    htc-one-att-root

For those of you who like to hack and crack your phones, there is good news! Members of the XDA Developers forums have reported a successful Bootloader unlock on the AT&T version of the HTC One. According to sources, the same methods used on the International version to root and install ClockWorkMod will also work on the US version.

There were concerns initially that by the time the One officially launched AT&T would have disabled the standard HTC bootloader unlocking tool, but thankfully this was not the case. As is the case with most Bootloader unlock procedures, you can expect your One to be completely wiped to the factory settings, so back up any and all personal files you hold near and dear. Additional items you may miss following the unlock procedure include:

    • Flashlight
    • Ringtone Trimmer
    • Sound Recorder

All of which can be replaced by third-party apps on the Google Play Store if need be. Be advices, if you are attached to those handy, but not always timely OTA updates, you are going to have to learn to live without them because your One will no longer pass the required file integrity checks necessary to receive them.

If you are a true tweaker, you are probably sneering at the fact that you will lose these basic apps and have probably never relied on an OTA update in your life anyway…so go forth and happy hacking!

A WORD OF CAUTION! TalkAndroid can not be held accountable for any damage this unlocker might do to your device.  Please err on the side of caution on this one and if you don’t think you are tech savvy enough to do it yourself, go grab the geek down the street to help you out.

    • Navigate their Xbox 360 with swipe and tap
    • Use a phone’s keyboard to type to a user’s Xbox 360
    • Browse the Internet on an Xbox 360 with full keyboard and zooming
    • Play, pause, fast forward, rewind, and stop videos and music on an Xbox 360

    • Edit Xbox profiles

The new download is a hefty 18MB, which is well worth it for all of the “numerous design and usability improvements” Microsoft promises in this version. One user noted that the Tablet version will enable the app to stay awake during extended periods of inactivity, eliminating the need to wait for the app to reestablish a connection when brought out of standby mode. A welcome bug fix, especially for those of us that want our information at the ready at a moments notice.

  • Germany’s Federal Patent Court Rules in Apple’s Favor and Invalidates Samsung Wireless Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs)

apple_in_colorGermany’s Federal Patent Court (GFPC) ruled in favor of Apple Wednesday when it invalidated the German part of Samsung’s European Patent Specification, “turbo encoding/decoding device and method for precessing frame data according to QoS” (EP1005726, including proposed amendments), which Samsung stated was essential for UMTS, the 3G wireless standard.

As is the case in most of these rulings, Samsung has the opportunity to appeal the decision to the German Federal Court of Justice. Samsung has sought injunctions against Apple over this, as well as other numerous SEPs.

In 2012, a Statement of Objections (SOs) was issued by the European Commission which stated “the pursuit of injunction relief against Apple, a willing licensee, was abusive conduct“. This SO was enough to cause Samsung to withdraw all of its European SEP injunctions against Apple, but not enough to keep them from suing for damages/injunction for non-SEPs.

This ruling comes merely one week after the GFPC invalidated an Apple slide-to-unlock patent. Of course, Apple is not taking this ruling lying down, and is also making attempts to appeal it, but more than likely will not be successful if the GFPCs reaction to past appeals are any indication.

  • UK’s EE Doubling 4G Network Speeds in 10 Locations

4GEE-superfastEE, one of the UK’s most advanced communications company, has announced it will double its current 4G speeds for its customers. They plan to launch the faster network in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, and Sheffield by summer 2013.

In order to increase speeds to what they are calling “4GEE“, they will need to increase both their network’s capacity and coverage. EE will double the amount of 1800MHz spectrum capacity bandwidth from 10MHz to 20MHz. According to EE’s Chief Executive Officer, Olaf Swantee, “We are ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of the digital revolution. Having already pioneered 4G here, we’re now advancing the country’s infrastructure again with an even faster, even higher-capacity network, and at no extra cost to our customers.

EE’s ambition is to stay one step ahead of the competition and always offer the fastest network in the UK. EE, which is targeting more than one million customers by Dec 2013, estimates an increase in network traffic of 750% over the next three years. Increasing their 4G network to lab speeds of up to 130Mbps will help them to meet demands of their ever growing customer base.

In addition to increased speeds and bandwidth, EE plans to make more investments and improvements to its core network to enable a wide range of new services for its customers such as voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi), and video and voice calls over 4G/LTE (VoLTE).

  • Overlays Android Application Floats Widgets Over Currently Running Apps

    overlays

App developers are finding more and more ways to take advantage of Widgets in Android. As any Android fan knows, Widgets are one of the major benefits of using Android over iOS.  Widgets give us the ability to preview apps without having to open them time-and-time again (wipe the drool from your chins Apple fanboys [and girls]).

As awesome as Widgets are, developers continue to strive to make them that much better. Applay, headed up by XDA Senior Member liorry, has done just that with its “Overlays” app.  Overlays enables users to “take any existing widget and effectively pin it on top of any currently running application.” Hit the break for a gallery of images and download links for both the paid for and free versions of the app. There are some amazing uses for overlaying Widgets over running apps, such as placing music controls on top of a navigation app, or keeping a calculator hovering over a spreadsheet. Overlaying also lets you float your Twitter or Facebook feed over a running YouTube video (similar to Samsung’s Sense 5 on the GSIII and GS4).

Overlays enables the use of profiles that automatically float selected Widgets whenever certain apps are opened and then remove them when closed. The app also comes preloaded with overlays for commonly used information Widgets, like Battery Level, SMS/Missed Call Counts, Weather, and Time.

Unfortunately, Overlays is only available for users running Android 4.0 and higher. But with the number of devices running Jelly Bean on the rise, it won’t be long before everyone can take advantage of Overlay’s useful functionality.

  • Tumblr Rolls Out Enhanced Sharing Capabilities with Newly Redesigned Android App

    tumblr_app_image

Not to be outdone by the competition, Tumblr rolled out their newly redesigned Android app today on the Google Play Store. The latest iteration brings with it some pretty amazing updates. The app, which is available immediately for download, has an all new “post anything” screen that lets users post:

    • Photos
    • Videos
    • Quotes
    • Chats
    • Links
    • Text (with a single tap)

Advanced controls will also enable users to save drafts, queue posts, and customize tweets. Hit the break for a screenshot of the new “post anything” screen.tumblr_share_everything

Tumblr posted in a blog today that they have “completely redesigned the interface, added fancy post animations, made images pop, and a whole lot more.” So you can expect a clean, unique, user friendly UI with the new release. The latest version also enables users to manage multiple blogs, a welcome addition from its antiquated predecessor.

If Tumblr follows the same release pattern as last year, we can expect to see an updated IOS app in the next month or two. Although user feedback has been fairly positive overall, some users are reporting issues with “GIF” support, HTC One S and MyTouch by LG, and the Dashboard being “cut off” on other devices. There are also reported issues pertaining to accessing outside blogs, and the dashboard not recalling where users left-off when returning from blog reviews. Users seem frustrated with having to re-scroll through previously read posts over-and-over again.

All-in-all, user reviews are positive and this latest release appears to be an improvement on the previous version. I am confident the team at Tumblr will be monitoring user feedback closely and making short work of any minor bugs and glitches reported over the coming days.

What are your thoughts on the new Tumblr app?

  • Samsung Infringes Key Portion of Apple Patent

samsung_vs_appleApple and Samsung are still going at it!  On the road to innovation and market domination, Samsung has managed to infringe on a piece of an Apple patent. While they skirted the line on an infringement dealing with auto-detection of microphones or other devices plugged into its handset’s microphone jacks, an International Trade Commission (ITC) judge has found Samsung guilty of crossing that line with one of their other “innovations”.

The decision, issued back on March 26, was released Thursday and revealed that Samsung’s “text-select” feature on its smartphones and tablets is in fact an infringement on a key portion of Apple’s patent. Although the decision is not final, the full commission is expected to make a final decision sometime in August.

If the ITC judge’s decision is upheld, Samsung will be barred from importing any of the infringing devices to the US.  This would be a crushing blow to Samsung’s bottom line for sure. What items are on the chopping block?  Included in the list of infringing devices are their Transform and Nexus devices, among others. For more information on affected devices, search for ITC case #337-796.

According to Gartnew Inc., Samsung is the world’s “largest smartphone maker”, while Apple comes in a close second. This, of course, is more than likely the reason Apple has been on the offensive with respect to its patents. Legal battles between Samsung and Apple are nothing new, and have ensued in more than 10 countries over the past few years.

The old saying, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you” comes to mind in the case of Apple’s numerous lawsuits against Samsung. Samsung, after all, has always been a main supplier of mico-processors, flat screens, and memory chips for Apple’s infamous iPhones. In retaliation for their shenanigans, Apple has reduced the number of chips and screens they order from their rival…take that Samsung! What do you think, has Apple gone too far with its lawsuits against Samsung, or has Samsung crossed the line with its supposed patent infringements?

  • OUYA to Launch in 59 Days, Brings with it Software and Hardware Improvements

ouya_consoleOUYA has done a great job of listening to early adopters of their developer consoles, and has worked rigorously to address issues and concerns that have been reported. According to OUYA, they have fixed identified issues for their upcoming June roll out. Their promise to consumers, to “continue to obsess over quality and performance“.

Some of the overall improvements to the final product include both hardware and software improvements.  Here is a list OUYA has for each:

    HARDWARE

Problem: Battery Covers on front of unit fell off easily during shipping.

Fix: Add additional magnets to cover plats to improve security.

    SOFTWARE

    • External storage for games
    • Simpler game install process
    • More metrics for developers

  • Latest Android Distribution Reveals Gingerbread Down 4.4% and Jelly Bean Up 8.5%

    Android_Distribution_Percentages

The number of Android devices running Jelly Bean is on the rise. Last month we reported Gingerbread down by 1.4%, and Jelly Bean up by 3.2%. Just one month later we are happy to report a significant increase in devices running Jelly Bean of 8.5%, and decrease in devices running Gingerbread of 4.4%. Here are the latest stats:

    • 1.6 Donut – 0.1%
    • 2.1 Eclair – 1.7%
    • 2.2 Froyo – 4.0%
    • 2.3 Gingerbread – 39.8%
    • 3.2 Honeycomb – 0.2%
    • 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – 29.3%
    • 4.1 and 4.2 Jelly Bean – 25.0%

This decrease in devices running Gingerbread is a great sign.  With devices like the HTC One X, X+, XL, X+ USA, Droid DNA, Butterfly, Incredible 4G LTE, and EVO 4G LTE all receiving the Jelly Bean update, and the latest slew of devices being released with it straight out of the box, we should see another significant jump in devices running it by this time next month.

T-Mobile HTC One with Free Car Kit

T-Mobile recently updated their sign-up page for the HTC One. They have announced a special offer for online orders of the HTC One, a free official Car Kit.  The offer comes as an addition to their “$100 Prepaid Visa Card or the trade-in value of your old handset – whichever’s greater” offer announced the beginning of February.

T-Mobile has gone to great lengths to ensure they maximize the number of qualified buyers, which is great for those of you out their waiting in the wings for the official release. To qualify, buyers need only pre-register for information on the site by Apr 04, purchase the One by Apr 26 (which supports a possible early April pre-sale launch date), and trade-in their current, working smartphone by May 31.

The offer, coupled with the “$99 down payment” plan also announced for the One, will definitely make current customers happy, entice new customers, and draw in those of you out there who are currently undecided on whether or not to stick with your current carrier. I have to admit, these deals, along with T-Mobile’s latest “UNcarrier” plans, have made me think a lot about my current carrier decision.

Though an exact launch date has not officially been announced by T-Mobile, buyers can more than likely expect to see the handsets available for pre-order sometime around the beginning of this month. If you happen to be one of the “undecided”, you should probably head over to the source and pre-register for info now to ensure you qualify for this incredible deal…in case you do decide to jump ship.

  • Rendered Image Leak of Meizu MX3 Confirms Previous Design Spec Rumors

    Meizu_MX3_Leaked_Image

China’s mobile smartphone manufacturer, Meizu, is at it again.  They have improved on their original MX2, with their latest and greatest handset, dubbed cleverly enough as the MX3. The device was previously rumored to contain a 5.1-inch full HD display, Exynos 5410 Octa processor, and a narrower bezel.

Although the leaked rendered image above does suggest that the MX3′s screen will be at least 5.1, with a narrow bezel, there is still nothing firm from our sources to confirm the Exynos 5410 processor, but since the rest of the rumors appear to be holding true, this may not be too far of a stretch from reality.

You will recall that the Exynos 5410 is the same latest generation 8-core processor the Samsung Galaxy S 4 is flaunting, which is very impressive indeed. The image, if legitimate, reveals that the MX3 will resemble HTC’s flagship handset, the “One”, in many ways. If we were to speculate on the design specs based on what we know thus far, we could come to the conclusion that we may also see the following specs on the new device:

    • Android Jelly Bean
    • 8 MP Rear-facing Camera/2 GB Front-facing Camera
    • 2GB of RAM
    • Several Internal Storage Options
    • MicroSD Card Support
    • ~$400 price range

We are still speculating as to the product launch date, but all signs point to sometime in the summer. I think Meizu is really going to have to bring it hard if they want to be competitive with their latest handset right out the gate. With more and more handsets launching with high-end specs at lower prices, it is going to be difficult for the underdogs to stay afloat for sure. And with the recent imposition of US Technology Restrictions on China’s tech merchandise, it is going to be that much harder for China’s vendors to turn a profit in the US.

  • Google’s Takes ‘OPN Pledge’ to Protect Open Source and Patents

    android-open-source

Following in the footsteps of Open Source pioneers IBM and Red Hat, Google has taken a giant leap forward in preserving the purity of Open Source and Patents in the world of technology.  In a recent blog post on Google’s “Open Source Blog”, Senior Patent Counsel, Duane Valz, makes a less-than-obvious attack on patent and money hungry technology companies (like the one named after that one fruit that Eve took a bite out of that started this whole mess).  He states the importance of protecting this purity to ensure continued innovation in the world of computer software, and continued advancement in cloud computing, the mobile web, and the internet in general.

Today, Google announced its “Open Patent Non-Assertion (OPN) Pledge“.  In it they pledge “NOT to sue any user, distributor or developer of open-source software on specified patents…unless first attacked.“  Gotta love that last part!  Google, in their infinite wisdom, has included an Apple escape clause (Oops!  Just came right out and said it that time).

At this point Google has only identified 10 patents relating to MapReduce in their initial pledge list, but vow to expand on that list, adding “past, present or future” open-source software that might rely on pledge patents.  Good for you Google!

Google, a member of the Open Invention Network, hopes to complement their efforts on cooperative licensing with this new pledge.  They are working with “like-minded” companies to develop patent agreements that would cut down on lawsuits.

They claim that they will “continue to support patent reforms that would improve patent quality and reduce excessive litigation“.  The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of companies “required to defensively acquire ever more patents“, and to remain committed to an open internet.  The pledge includes, but is not limited to upholding the following ideals:

    • Transparency. Patent holders determine exactly which patents and related technologies they wish to pledge, offering developers and the public transparency around patent rights.
    • Breadth. Protections under the OPN Pledge are not confined to a specific project or open- source copyright license. (Google contributes a lot of code under such licenses, like the Apache or GNU GPL licenses, but their patent protections are limited.) The OPN Pledge, by contrast, applies to any open-source software—past, present or future—that might rely on the pledged patents.
    • Defensive protection. The Pledge may be terminated, but only if a party brings a patent suit against Google products or services, or is directly profiting from such litigation.
    • Durability. The Pledge remains in force for the life of the patents, even if we transfer them.

With this new OPN Pledge Google hopes to mentor other companies to “put their own patents into the service of open-source software” which they believe will “continue to enable amazing innovation“.

  • Leaks & Rumors about Motorola’s X and Upcoming Nexus Smartphones

    Motorola_X_Nexus

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for some interesting news from the rumor mill. We have been seeing a hint here and another one there indicating what Google & Motorola has planned for its upcoming X smartphone. And although there have been rumors and speculation floating around for a while now, we have in fact, began to see more and more leaks about Motorola’s upcoming X phone. As if you all haven’t had enough yet, we now have more rumors to share with you courtesy of our friends from Android and Me. These leaks and rumors seem to come from a “confirmed source” of proven reliability…so hang on to your seats as we break down the latest and greatest!

New Rumor #1: “The target launch date for the Moto X has slipped from June to July due to manufacturing issues.

Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): Sources originally leaked a launch date of June 2013, so a shift to the right by a month doesn’t seem like such a far stretch. The source report also eludes to some type of “exclusive” launch sometime in July followed by a “broader” launch around the Thanksgiving time-frame. Which means we may be looking at an “internet only” initial launch followed be a carrier launch a few months later. If this launch date holds true, then we can expect to hear an announcement of the release at Google I/O in May. We shall see…

New Rumor #2: “X phone customization will be limited to the ‘design of the phone (to include color combinations, and material for the outer casing, like plastic, metal, or carbon fiber)’, ‘internal storage’, and ‘personalized software settings’.

BLUF: Original leaks led us to believe the customization would be endless, causing readers to infer that they would have complete customization control right down to the amount of RAM to be used. Although a little disappointing, this new rumor further validates the original customization rumors, while adding an additional layer of believability to the rumor by placing restrictions on the types of customizations that can be done. I know I had a hard time believing the original reports, as it was hard for me to wrap my head around the production process and how Motorola would be able to afford the many changes they would have to make throughout the production cycle to make endless combustibility an affordable and worthwhile reality.

I have to admit, the idea of software customization, as we have seen made possible through HTC’s “Get Started”, would be nice.  I have to admit, being able to logon to an online dashboard using my Google account prior to the arrival of my ordered device to customize the desktop, wallpaper, ringtones, preinstalled apps, and the like, would be a welcomed feature. Something like this would save me hours of customization when I first jump on my new handset.

New Rumor #3: “The specs of the first Motorola X phone will be comparable to the HTC One, but will not be an iPhone or Galaxy S 4 killer.

BLUF: Initial reports were that the Moto X phone line of devices would be marketed with an emphasis on customization capabilities, with additional options for expansion through connected devices like Google Glass and the upcoming SmartWatch. Basically, OEMs feel the specs are irrelevant due to the focus shift from hardware specs, which lets face it, have far outgrown software capabilities, to app, services, and experiences that the devices can deliver. I mean, to be honest, even the Galaxy S 4 would be just another high-end smartphone if Samsung didn’t pack it full of their “life companion” innovations, right?

Besides, if Motorola focused strictly on hardware advancements with the Moto X line, then they wouldn’t be able to keep their promise of “heavily subsidized retail pricing”, like we have seen with the affordable Moto RAZR line of devices, would they?

New Rumor #4: “The Moto X will feature a Motorola logo on the back of the device that acts as a touch sensitive button that allows you to launch commands.

BLUF: This rumor holds true at this point in time. No changes here, other than Motorola may give users the power to control what the new logo button launches when pressed.

New Rumor #5: “Motorola will still release several more Droid phones this year.

BLUF: Google has admittedly inherited an 18 month production pipeline, which means this rumor is more than likely accurate.

New Rumor #6: “Motorola will release a Nexus phone at the end of the year, that is not associated with the Moto X line.

BLUF: Although the rumor mill is running rampant with whispers of another LG Nexus phone, we should not discount this one. There is nothing to suggest that Motorola won’t release its own Nexus handset. If the past is any indicator, than the release of both ASUS and Samsung Nexus tablets last year shows us that it is completely plausible that this can, and may, happen with LG and Motorola’s handsets.

If Motorola did decide to release both lines in parallel, this could pose a significant financial burden. The amount of money they would have to dish out in advertising alone would be a significant financial blow, one that smartphone sales alone may not be able to soften. Which means Motorola (Google) would have to pull resources from other markets to cover cost. Not sure if the initial losses would justify the overall gains, but I am no financial guru, so I will let the bean counters worry about this one.

If they were to release the two handsets, then the Nexus would probably end up as the “stock” option, leaving the Moto X line the dominant of the two as the only “customizable” option. If both smartphones are in the manufacturing pipeline, then this might explain why design spec leaks are all over the map and we are having a hard time narrowing down these leaks a rumors to a more specific list.

New Rumor #7: “Google Watch will be announced and sold at the same time as the Moto X.

BLUF: All rumors up to this point in time indicate the release of a “Google Watch” being released sometime this summer. There have been no rumors to indicate otherwise at this point, so we are going to have to put some stock in these rumors for now. For all we know, these “Google Watches” may be released as companion accessories under the Motorola brand name, so for all intents and purposes, I wouldn’t put too much stock in the rumored name of the device just yet.

    BLUF:

As far as we can tell, the “customizable RAM” rumor may be the only one debunked with this newly released information, leading us to believe everything else previously reported has a strong potential to be true!  Great news for those of us who are diehard Motorola fans. I am excited to see what surprises Google will unveil at the upcoming 15-17 May I/O conference.

  • Google Babble Chat Client to Unify Now Fragmented Messaging Platforms

    babble_geekdotcom

Google has been working hard to unify their products. Their latest project, combines its currently fragmented messaging platforms under one powerful and effective service. The new initiative, affectionately called “Babble”, will do just that. Currently, Google is maintaining Google Talk, Hangout, Voice, Messenger, Chat for Drive collaboration, and the pseudo Google Talk for G+. The only two that work even fairly well together are Google Talk for Gmail and G+ and even they can evoke frustration with users from time-to-time.

The Babble cross-platform solution could enable Google to dominate chat services such as iMessage and BlackBerry Messenger. Google is building Babble from the ground up, which may or may not be a blessing depending on how you look at it. On one hand, they will be working from a clean slate and there will be no boundaries as to what they can make the app do. On the other hand, Google will be pushing out another Beta product based on past experiences that may have more bugs than a Louisiana bayou on a hot summer afternoon. We will just have to hope the geeks at Google push out a well polished, well oiled, version of the app on Beta release.

Babble will enable several enhancement features, such as:

    • Share photos in chat windows.
    • Start a hangout with anyone in your contacts list.
    • Conversations are threaded across the different services.
    • Ability to use same window for all chat products.

XMPP has served Google well over the years. Google’s recent decision to block non-native XMPP requests may be their first step towards building their own closed communications platform. In order to use the chat service their will be restrictions in place set by Google that must be adhered to closely. Bad news for those of you that are used to customization and tweaking, but transparent to the rest of us that are just looking for a simple, high quality, high performance chat solution that will get the job done.

No official release date has been announced as of yet, but we expect to hear something concerning the unification of these products during the upcoming Google I/O 2013. All that is known is that the new service comes with an app that will span across Android and Chrome OS, so it is unclear how it will be unveiled officially to the public.

I am excited that Google is addressing the chat fragmentation issue that has been affecting their platforms for years.
