Quite sometime back I had told you about a bookmarklet which will split the screen in Google Chrome and allow you to load multiple websites in a single tab or window in Google Chrome.

The bookmarklet still works perfectly fine, however, I also came across a similar Google Chrome Extension which will allow you to split the screen and load two websites in a single tab. The extension which is called "Split Screen", opens up a new popup window and allows you to open multiple websites in a single tab.

Techie Buzz Verdict

Split Screen is a handy extension when you are working on a single monitor and want to refer to some website or news while composing an article. However, there is a problem with the extension. When you want to re-load the URL in any one pane, it reloads both the pages, this in turn means if you are composing an email or writing an article, the composed content will disappear if you have not saved it.

It would be good if the extension developer allows users to load content in individual panes separately. Nevertheless, the extension is definitely worth downloading and will come in handy when you want to research data from multiple sites, without having to constantly keep flipping tabs.

Gmail allows users to setup external POP3 accounts in their Gmail accounts, however, the mail fetching does not happen instantly. Gmail schedules email download from POP3 at specific intervals.

However, you can now refresh your POP3 account and fetch email on demand using a new Gmail Labs feature called Refresh POP accounts. To enable this feature, head over to Settings -> Labs and enable the "Refresh POP accounts" feature.

Once you do that, you will see a new option to Refresh your emails, using this link you can refresh both your Gmail Inbox and also fetch emails from your POP accounts.

While routinely searching for a person on Google, I came across a new feature in Google Search where Google is displaying Facebook friends for a particular user in the search results.

As you can see from the screenshot above, searching for my own name resulted in the following search results, the more interesting thing though is that Google is also displaying names of friends from Facebook (the above account is not mine though and belongs to another Keith D’souza).

The friend list snippet is displayed for public Facebook profiles of users, it is not available for Facebook users who have disabled third party sites from accessing their information. Here is another example for a search I did for Robert Scoble.

Google did not display the Facebook Friends for Amit Agarwal, which might suggest that there are privacy settings restricting it. However, it did display the LinkedIn Profile information for the same search.

Why would Google want to display Facebook Friends in search results? The only reason I can think of right now is to allow users to see find people based on common friends. This could also mean that Google is trying to make it easier for people to find and connect with others through search results.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to remove this information from the search results at Google. You will have to explicitly change the settings in Facebook and LinkedIn to make the information more private.

Viruses and malware are not new to mobile devices, however, in a somewhat startling revelation, Panda Research blog discovered that Vodafone is distributing the Mariposa bot, Conficker and Lineage password stealing malware with HTC Magic phones.

The vulnerability was found in HTC Magic phone running the Android OS which was supplied by Vodafone Germany (based on the screenshots and German language used on the computer of the Panda AV employee). The alert was triggered by Panda Cloud AV, when the phone was plugged into the PC via USB.

Malicious code was found in the Autorun files, which automatically runs when a USB drive is connected to a PC. The malware in question was identified as Mariposa bot client, which is run by an unknown guy named "tnls". If users are infected with the virus it will automatically start contacting servers and sending data to them.

In addition to the above bot, the researcher also found traces of Conficker virus along with a password stealing malware called Lineage. There were no reports about the phone being affected by the above, but PCs without appropriate protection would definitely be vulnerable to these viruses.

It is really startling to see that both Vodafone and HTC allowed these phones to be sold without extensive testing and checks. It is not known as too how many phones are affected, however, it is a safe bet to connect your phone to your PC (with AV running), and running a quick scan on the contents of the phone.

We have contacted Vodafone and HTC for a statement, will update this post when more information becomes available.

Some recent tests on the Verizon Wireless 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network have clocked some amazing download speeds, easily surpassing the current 3G networks.

According to a press release from Verizon, they have been testing the 4G LTE network in Boston and Seattle since August 2009 and have seen peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second with upload speeds ranging between 20 to 25 Mbps.

The tests included data calls, VoIP calls, streaming videos and file uploads and downloads along with regular web browsing. This is definitely good news since such speeds have rarely been see on mobile networks and it would definitely make mobile web browsing and downloads better than what they are right now.

For example, you could easily download and watch a 650 MB movie over the air in 10 minutes or lesser, which would currently take you around 30 minutes or more.

Verizon Wireless plans to make the 4G LTE network available in 25 to 30 US markets by the end of 2010.

Looking at the commercial, I certainly would not want to own this piece of hardware. Apple definitely managed to make the iPad look more gaudy than it really is, way to go Apple. Or is is it really that bad? Would you buy the iPad after watching this commercial?

South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the biggest music festivals held every spring in Austin, Texas. Every year thousands of music lovers and performers descend on Texas and revel in music played across 80 stages all over Austin.

Yesterday, I told you how Twitter was quickly racing towards 10 billion tweets and guess what, they have now reached that milestone and passed 10 billion tweets.

The latest tweet count can be found on this site. The one amazing thing about this milestone is that, the tweets on Twitter jumped from 5 billion to 10 billion in around 5 months, and now that Twitter does 50 million tweets per day, the next billions will be knocked down pretty quickly.

Congratulations to the 140… Twitter team on this milestone. Hope you scale new heights in the future too.

After more than a month of problems, Indian users will finally be able to withdraw money to their banks from PayPal India.

The new withdrawals will require users to use a Purpose Code while withdrawing money to their bank accounts. If you received payments for your website or blog, you need to use Freelance Journalism as your purpose code.

Please choose your purpose code accordingly, so that you do not get into any trouble later. Also, as said earlier, there will be a limit on the amount you can withdraw before which you will require to produce receipts or invoices and your PAN card. Though PayPal has not explicitly said how much the upper limit is before you would require additional documents, however, this would more likely than not be Rs 50,000, as bank deposits above this require users to produce their PAN cards.

Phew, that was a tough month for publishers, but all’s well that ends well, go ahead and get your money out right away.

The folks who write malware and virus are not just smart at writing them, they are also very smart at camouflaging their stuff in such a way that unsuspecting users may easily get fooled to believe that they are actual doing something legitimate.

Many malware and virus thrive on SEO poisoning for popular search terms. They make use of the fast indexing capabilities of Google to get indexed for popular search terms, especially "sex scandals" and "sex videos".

A recent analysis from the folks at Sophos Labs, uncovered several URLs which made it to Google through blackhat SEO, however, the more interesting finding was that, malware and virus writers have now started to generate spoof screens which look similar to Windows 7.

When users visit sites which host such malware, they will come across an interface which is similar to Windows 7, with a popup which looks exactly like the security center popup for Windows 7. Furthermore, the malware site also displays fake antivirus scan results which show the user that there are several viruses installed on the PC.

It is easy to get fooled because of the stark similarities between this Fake antivirus, however, users should know that they are using a web browser, and such scans are not carried out by Microsoft in the web browser.

Though the looks may be deceiving, you should not click on any security related or free antivirus scans on a web browser. Additionally, many modern browsers are smart enough to block such malware sites, so make sure to keep your browser upgraded to the latest version.

Google Chrome now has more than 3000 extensions in the Google Chrome Extension gallery, however, the extension gallery still leaves a lot to be desired.

Quite sometime back I had done a comparison between Google Chrome Extensions and Firefox Add-ons. In that, I had pointed out the the Chrome extension gallery lacks categorization, which makes it really difficult to find extensions with perform a certain set of tasks.

It has been quite a few months now, and the gallery still does not have any categorization in place. So as a user when you browse the gallery, you will come across all sort of extensions which you have no interest in, and which you could have easily avoided if the gallery had categorization.

To top it the gallery also does not segregate themes from extensions, which in turn makes it more difficult to find good themes.

3000 is definitely a big number considering that only few months have passed since the gallery went live, however, the extension gallery is still in a disarray. Agreed that you can search for extensions, but how would I know the name of an extension without browsing the gallery. If I could browse categories such as Themes, Sports and so on, I could quickly and easily find what I want. Search does not work in every place, hope you are listening Google.

Contact relationship management (CRM) is a very important part of any business. Google does offer it’s own Contact interface for Gmail, but it leaves a lot to be desired.

However, a browser add-on called Rapportive is set to fill in that void of having a full-fledged CRM for Gmail users. Rapportive is somewhat similar to Xobni for Outlook, or you could also say the Social features built into Office 2010.

Once you install the Rapportive extension, it will gel into the Gmail interface and display extensive information about a contact based on their email address and social networking profile.

Rapportive will will look up the sender’s email address and display information about them in the sidebar, including their image, profile and social networking stream. Users will have to provide access to Rapportive through the Google Data API, before they can begin seeing data.

Overall this looks like a pretty decent tool and will definitely add more value to Gmail. Also considering that Google is on a acquisition drive, Rapportive would definitely be a good choice to buy out, as it could give both Gmail and Google Apps a definitive edge over other webmail providers.

Rapportive is currently available for download as a Google Chrome Extension and as a Firefox add-on.

Microsoft has rolled out the Browser ballot screens in EU nations, using which users can choose which browser they want to install and use as default on their computers. However, Microsoft is also collecting information on where the users are headed through redirect links which go through go.microsoft.com.

The Ballot Screen, whose replica is available at BrowserChoice.eu, has links to download different browsers, however, all those links go through the redirect before ending up on the actual download site.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with it, many companies use redirects for outgoing links. However, one thing is sure, Microsoft will have the data for the browsers which are chosen by users.

Microsoft will may never make this data public or share them with other companies, but it would definitely be interesting from an analysis standpoint to know which browsers were chosen by users.

Opera recently released the Opera 10.5, the fastest browser on earth. If you are someone who lives out of a USB stick, you do not need to download and install the Windows version. Previously mentioned Portable Opera, have released a new standalone version of Opera 10.5 which you can run from a USB drive.

If you have already been using an earlier version of Opera Portable, you can also download an updater, which will update your current install to Opera 10.5.

Last time around we told you about some interesting tools and services for Google Buzz. However, since then couple of new services have been created. The first one is Buzz Aware, which is an apps directory for Google Buzz and the other is Buzrr, a Google Buzz counter.

Buzzr is similar to Tweetmeme for Twitter, and counts the number of buzzes and ranks them according to the highest Buzz count. It also allows users to re-buzz a buzzed item. In addition to that, it also allows users to add a Buzrr button to their website or WordPress blog.

Based on a EU judgment, Microsoft recently rolled out the browser ballot system in European countries, however, they are not the one’s to let up on the market share that easy, and have rolled out a series of new advertisements in the United Kingdom to keep users hooked on to Internet Explorer 8.

I did find some of the commercial videos on My Microsoft Life. These videos are only 8 seconds in length, so I was wondering what Microsoft was thinking about them.

I understand that it is a webmasters goal to load webpages in 8 seconds or less, but that is because they want users to start reading the content in that time, not understanding it. So Microsoft’s thinking in these 8 second ads goes beyond me, even though I understand that it is in theme with "Internet Explorer 8", I found the 30 second Google Super Bowl ad more interesting.

Looks like 2010 is the year of milestones. I have been writing about several software and services crossing one milestone or the other, but this time it is Twitter again who will cross 10 billion tweets in the next day or so.

Right now the number of tweets is very close to the 1 billion mark, and according to the Twitter tweet counter, GigaTweet, the 10 billion tweet mark will be breached in the next day or so. This is double whammy for Twitter, as they had recently announced that there were about 50 million tweets per day on Twitter.

10 billion tweets is definitely a great feat to achieve. The iTunes Store was another service to achieve 10 billion song downloads recently. So, it looks like we are finally out of the recession and now talking about only billions and not millions these days.

Nevertheless, I have been on Twitter for since 2007 and it has evolved a lot under my eyes. I do believe that Twitter does deserve this feat, however, they also have to work a lot towards ensuring that Twitter trends do not get spammed and that we do not receive unwanted DM Spam in the future.

Let’s hope that the person who tweets the 10 billionth tweet gets something good from Twitter. Will it be you or me? Let’s wait for that for a day shall we
