Firefox 3.7 Alpha 2 will be officially released in the next few days, however, the release schedule does not have the actual date of the release, but you can download Firefox 3.7 Pre Alpha 2 "Minefield" right now from their FTP Repository.

Firefox 3.7 Alpha 2 will come with the 1.9.3 Gecko engine, and also includes new icons and other features which makes Firefox a bit faster than the earlier versions. The Pre-Alpha does have a stable version of separate processes for Plugins which works better than my earlier tests.

However, Firefox 3.7 did fail the Acid3 test and was given a rating of 96/100 as compared to current version of Opera and Google Chrome, which both received 100/100 in the Acid3 tests. Even Firefox 3.6 had a Acid3 rating of 96/100.

If you are a brave-heart and want to test the Pre-Alpha2 of Firefox 3.7, head over to the nightly build repository and download the appropriate version. FF 3.7 Pre-Alpha2 is available for downloads for Mac, Windows and Linux.

Call him plain lazy or just too busy, but a recent uncovering by the folks at 9to5Mac suggests that Steve Jobs is still using iPhone OS 3.1.2 and not the latest iPhone OS 3.1.3 based on a email he sent out to developers of Final Cut Pro.

The email in question, which was sent out by Steve Jobs, had headers with the email client listed as iPhone Mail (7D11), which is the default mail client for iPhone OS 3.1.2 (OS 3.1.3 has OS (3.1.3 – 7E18)).

This incident has quickly become a joke for many who are suggesting that Steve Jobs is waiting for the latest basedband unlock before switching to iPhone OS 3.1.3, 9to5Mac even went ahead and posted a tutorial for Jobs to upgrade his iPhone to OS 3.1.3.

Jokes apart, this is a real embarrassment for Jobs who is the CEO of Apple. It definitely looks bad when the CEO of the company is not using the latest version of his own software. Were there any problems Steve, or are you really waiting for the jailbreak ?

For the first time in the past three years that I have been using Twitter, I was prompted by Twitter to enter/update my profile information trough an overlay window. The prompt in question asks users to fill their profile information as well as adds a privacy option to disable find by email address.

The prompt titled as "Be found on Twitter", asks user to enter their name, bio, location, email along with allowing users to disable being discovered through their email address.

Though I don’t see the point behind this, I am guessing that several users do not have proper profile information setup for their account and Twitter is running a drive to get more information about users. Are you seeing this prompt too?

Quite sometime back I wrote and compiled a list of webmaster bookmarklets which would come in pretty handy to webmasters and anyone else who want to get more information about a site. Over a period of time I have created several more bookmarklets which have come in very handy.

Over a discussion at Twitter today, I came across a question about searching a site, and based on that I shared a bookmarklet which will allow users to search any website using the site operator in Google, Bing and Yahoo.

Searching with these bookmarklets is pretty easy. When you are on a site and want to search it for something, just click on the bookmarklet for the search engine you want to search content in. Once you do that, you will be prompted to enter the search term. Enter it and click on the Ok button to initiate the site search.

If you are interested, drag any of the links below to your bookmarks bar and click on it whenever you want to search content within a website.

Oh My God, before we even came out of a really bad Twitter Phishing scam, we have another one back on our backside. However, this time it is not phishing though, but, it is definitely horny and asking for a chat.

Earlier in the day, I was alerted by Sathya about this, but I did not heed much into it, but I then received the above message from one of my friends. Now I would not be surprised, but the person in question is a male.

I did a bit of research but was not able to find the origination of this DM spam, however, if you receive this message tell the person who sent you about it and alert them to change their password immediately.

This is definitely a bad thing for Twitter, controlling spam is not easy, but you have to do it no matter what. I am now awaiting the next bout of Spam to hit my inbox.

I will update this post as and when I come across more information about the origination of this DM spam, stay tuned.

In a very well written post, a Google employee, or Googler if you would like to call them that, Amit Singhal, wrote a pretty strong worded post against regulators butting in on regulating how search engines rank results for queries.

The opening statement in itself blew me away, and made me understand what and how people who want to regulate search have gotten it wrong, take a look at it yourself.

Pop quiz. Get ready. You’re only going to have a few milliseconds to answer this question, so look sharp. Here goes: "know the way to San Jose?" Now display the answer on a screen that’s about 14 inches wide and 12 inches tall. Find the answer from among billions and billions of documents. Wait a second – is this for directions or are we talking about the song? Too late. Just find the answer and display it. Now on to the next question. Because you’ll have to answer hundreds of millions each day to do well at this test. And in case you find yourself getting too good at it, don’t worry: at least 20% of those questions you get every day you’ll have never seen before. Sound hard? Welcome to the wild world of search at Google. More specifically, welcome to the world of ranking.

Now, this in itself does not say that how search engine rank results, but it definitely says that when you want to get a needle out of a haystack, you need to look into the right places, or you would never find the needle. Also another interesting thing this throws up is that the needle in the haystack may get throw out with the hay itself if search regulators decide to regulate how search engines work and then put the onus on us normal human beings without an algorithm to figure out and search carefully.

To be frank, I have been a a Google search user from the time since I have started using Internet, 90% of the time I have found solutions for my problems within the first three or four pages of the search results. For the other 10%, I have had to tweak my searches quite a bit, but I did get to a solution nevertheless.

Now imagine with search engine regulators I would have to reverse the scenario, that is 90% of the times I would have to tweak my search queries and refine them till I find the correct results. I certainly do not want that for any search engines including Google and Bing, keep the search regulators out, be it EU or anyone else.

Have you ever told anyone, "Get to the point", when they go round the bush blabbering about things which could have been said in simple words or a mere sentence? Well, there are several people like you.

One boring thing about learning definitions of new words is the numerous sentences you have to go through to understand the meaning of a word, but if you want it out straight to the point, then the 10 Word Wiki will definitely come in handy.

10 Word Wiki, as the name suggests, puts out word definitions which are only 10 words long, no more than that. Here are some definitions of words that are stacked up on the 10 Word Wiki:

American Idol – Overly emotional singing show, coins it in for Simon Cowell.

Angelina Joile – Heavily tattooed kinky actress. Wants one child in every colour.

Baby Powder – Not made from ground, dessicated babies. Despite how it sounds.

Bacteria – Monocellular lifeforms. Some cause death, some cause lager or cheese.

Bee – A yellow and black striped buzzy insect that stings you.

Beauty – Describes a look. Definitely in the eye of the beholder.

The Opera team is getting closer and closer to the release candidate for Opera 10.5. Earlier today, the Opera team announced the release of Opera 10.5 Beta 2 which contains several significant changes over Opera 10.5 Beta 1.

Opera 10.5 Beta 2 packs in several significant changes to the browser including better integration with Windows 7 including Aero Glass, Aero Peek and Jumplists. It also optimizes on the Carakan JavaScript engine by adding a cross-platform bytecode interpreter among other things.

A new Opera "O" tab and menu also replaces the traditional Opera Menu bar and increases vertical space in the Opera window, centralizing several used features and tools in a single convenient location. Opera 10.5 Beta 2 also makes use of the Presto 2.5 rendering engine for better CSS support, along with more support for HTML5 and SVG.

The most important change in 10.5 Beta, at-least according to me is the introduction of Opera Widgets for Desktop which is similar to Prism for Firefox and Applications shortcuts in Google Chrome. The desktop widgets will now perform as native applications on user computer.

According to the latest Compete report, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube and MSN were the top 5 sites in the month of January 2010.

Overall in the top 20 sites for January 2010, msn.com was the biggest gainer with 10.51% MoM (Month over Month) increase, followed by monster.com, craigslist.org and youtube.com. The biggest loser in Jan 2010 was ebay.com which lost 18.70% traffic, followed by AOL.com which lost 11.94%.

Google gained 0.77%, however, Facebook was one up on them by gaining 1.13%. Out of the top 5 only yahoo.com showed a negative traffic climb losing over 1%. Google still had a slight upper edge over Facebook with 1.47 billion unique visitors. However, Facebook is still denting and making inroads into Google traffic with over 1.3 billion unique visits in January 2010. Bing is also making a splash by being ranked 11th with over 54 million visits in January 2010.

Royal Pingdom is one site which can come up with some really cool stuff, including analysis of huge amounts of data. So when I came across a post called Google facts and figures, I just sat down to see what interesting things I could learn about Google.

You can view the infographics at Royal Pingdom, but here are some highlights of the research put up by them.

• Google gave 1.8 million shares to Stanford Univ to license PageRank, which were later sold in 2005 for $336 million.
• 620 million visitors visit Google.com daily.
• 97% of Google Revenue comes from their advertising services.
• Google processes 20 Petabyte of information daily.
• As of December 2009, Google’s assets were valued at $40.5 billion
• A new Google employee is called Noogler, and later transitions to be called a Googler.
• Google has a total of 19,835 employees worldwide out of which 37% are in sales and marketing and 37.5% in research and development.
• 45% of Google products are in beta.
• 20 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute.
• Google Chrome now has a 5.22% market share.
• There are about 146 million Gmail users.
• 57% of the top 10,000 websites use Google Analytics to track users.

A new bout of Twitter DM Phishing spam is doing the rounds where affected users are sending out DMs to their friends which contain links to spam websites. A sample message of the Twitter DM spam says "haha, This you????" accompanied by a phishing link.

I urge users NOT TO click on the links accompanied in any direct messages received on Twitter, unless you know and are very sure about what you are doing. For those interested, clicking on this link led me to the page below, which was blocked by Google Chrome. So make sure that you are using a very secure browser, which can protect you.

Again, this is not the fault of the users who sent you the DM, and they might have been affected unknowingly, so the first thing is to let them know about it. There are several more things that you should follow to stay safe from this Phishing scam, most of which I had listed when a similar attack came about few months ago. Looks like IE6 has a lot of enemies which are looking to kill the 8 year old baby of Microsoft. A site called IE6 Funeral has cropped up on the interwebs, which claims that IE6 died on March 1st 2010 and its funeral will be held on March 4th 2010.

A message on the site IE6funeral.com says this:

Internet Explorer Six, resident of the interwebs for over 8 years, died the morning of March 1, 2010 in Mountain View, California, as a result of a workplace injury sustained at the headquarters of Google, Inc. Internet Explorer Six, known to friends and family as "IE6," is survived by son Internet Explorer Seven, and grand-daughter Internet Explorer Eight.

Funeral services for Internet Explorer Six will be held at 7pm on March 4 at Aten Design Group, 1629 Downing Street, Denver, CO 80218. Those unable to attend the funeral are asked to send flowers.

IE6 has been a subject of debate, some offensive, some defensive. However, this site goes way out to kill the poor browser. The site has been created by Alex Design Group who are a design company based out of Colorado.
